Ready to Get Involved? Become a Peer Counselor at the National MS Society At the Northern California Chapter’s 2010 Annual Meeting, chapter staff recognized Christopher Abiuso, RN, ACM as Volunteer of the Year. Chris became involved with the chapter when staff assisted him with the application process for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). Chris soon discovered how he could use his professional skills as a Registered Nurse and Certified Case Manager to volunteer for the Society’s Peer Counselor and Care Management programs.

Chris volunteers at the National MS Society to fuel his passion for patient care and helping others with MS. He talks with patients over the phone, at home or in our office, at a time that works for him. Chris knows first hand the range of symptoms and other issues that can arise from having MS (which can be difficult for anyone to navigate). He also realizes that by volunteering, his experience and expertise can influence the quality of life of others living with MS. By volunteering through the chapter’s Programs and Services Department, you can be trained as a Peer Counselor to help connect others with valuable community resources and services at the chapter; problem solve difficult situations; and improve the quality of life for people living with MS. As a volunteer, you can

Emotional Wellness Monthly Teleseries We are excited to present an on-going Emotional Wellness Teleseries with a new topic offered every month. Life Coach and Psychotherapist Catherine Freemire, LCSW leads the discussion on these exciting upcoming topics. This workshop will focus on the latest research on the science of happiness which points to five realms that bring authentic happiness into people’s lives. FEBRUARY: Writing as a Tool for Healing Tuesday, February 1st from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm OR Tuesday, February 8th from 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm There are many ways that writing can be used to foster the healing of wounds, the reduction of the power of negative experiences and the building of a new foundation for self-growth, “Ah-Ha” experiences and inner peace. This workshop will describe several of these writing tools. MARCH: The Power of Community Tuesday, March 1st from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm OR Tuesday, March 8th from 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm We, as human beings, are meant to feel a sense of belonging. In this workshop, we will explore the importance of belonging to communities and ways to expand engagement, including group activities, events like Walk MS Northern California, and volunteer efforts.

Self Help Groups Do you ever wish you could talk to others who understand what it’s like to live with MS and the challenges the disease brings? The Northern California Chapter sponsors a network of self-help groups for people with MS and their loved ones. The groups are peer-facilitated and meet regularly for educational and social purposes. About the Presenters Annan Paterson is a person living with MS who knows first hand the importance of advocating for the needs and treatment of people with chronic conditions through her own involvement in local politics. She has served as a board member for nonprofits and government agencies, both listening to public comment and giving testimony on community issues. She uses a variety of techniques to teach individuals and small groups how to communicate effectively within the time constraints of today’s hectic environment. Representatives from congressional and statewide offices will also be at this training. They will discuss how to expedite problems with Medicare and Medi-Cal, accessibility issues, Social Security claims, and intervening with governmental issues. How the National MS Society Funds Research and Makes Funding Decisions Teleconference Tuesday, March 22nd 6:00 pm - 7:15 pm Research in MS is progressing at a remarkable rate, with more potential therapies in the pipeline than at any other time in history. The National MS Society is a driving force of MS research, supporting and stimulating worldclass research into ways to prevent, better treat and cure this disease. Learn how far we’ve come, where we’re going and what the Society is doing to move toward a world free of MS. As Vice President of Biomedical Research at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Dr. O’Looney directs and oversees the administration of the Society’s biomedical research funding programs. Since joining the Society in 1988, she has provided leadership in directing and expanding the Society’s research initiatives and encouraging collaborations across scientific disciplines in MS research. She has guided several of the Society’s special research portfolios focusing on MS genetics, on gender differences in MS, on repair & protection of the damage in MS, as well as components of the Promise 2010 Campaign. In addition to coordinating the activities of the National Scientific Advisory Committees, she acts as a liaison between the medical & scientific community and those individuals suffering with MS by providing information about MS research developments to the MS community.

Turning Humor into Medication Teleconference Thursday, February 17th 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm Studies have shown that humor and laughter strengthen your immune system, boost your energy, diminish pain, and protect you from the damaging effects of stress. Take a tour of your life and learn how to laugh at yourself and to create humor out of the not so funny experiences of life. Featured Speaker: David Lander, best known for his portrayal of the character Squiggy on the sitcom Laverne & Shirley, was diagnosed with MS in 1984 and chose to hide his MS for the next 16 years. While it was a struggle to hide the symptoms and effects, David was determined and he succeeded in continuing his film and television career. In 2000, David’s autobiography Falling Down Laughing was published, which highlighted his determination to prove that people with MS can enjoy fulfilling and challenging lives.
