We Are People Who Want to Do Something About MS NOW About MS Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with MS, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. Multiple sclerosis interrupts the flow of information from the brain to the body and stops people from moving. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with more than twice as many women as men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.5 million people worldwide. About the National MS Society The National MS Society is a collective of passionate individuals who want to do something about MS now – to move together toward a world free from multiple sclerosis. The National MS Society helps people affected by MS by funding cuttingedge research, driving change through advocacy, facilitating professional education, and providing programs and services designed to help people with MS and their families move their lives forward. Early and ongoing treatment with an FDAapproved therapy can make a difference for people with multiple sclerosis. Learn about your options by talking to your health care professional and contacting the National MS Society at www.nationalMSsociety.org or 1-800-344-4867.

“The National MS Society helps people affected by MS by funding cutting-edge research, driving change through advocacy, facilitating professional education, and providing programs and services designed to help people with MS and their families move their lives forward.”

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. OR IS IT? “Enough already.” We’ve all said the words a million times, but we have yet to really step forward. That ends now. Today, this very second, we are putting our collective foot down and declaring this instant the time to take action. Now we have to move forward with the mindset that when it comes to a world free of MS, enough is not enough. Only all is enough.

We have reached the point when individual efforts can be made exponentially stronger through support and collaboration. Now we stand together to raise $250 million to fuel MS research. We will be everywhere at once with a focus on all the most promising opportunities. One path unexplored is one too many left behind. We will stop the progression of MS and restore everything people have lost. Anything less is not far enough. And now, we will end MS forever, so that every mother, father, son and daughter is safe in the future.

It will be an MS research revolution. This is our chance to take down MS once and for all, so no opportunity will be wasted and no stone will be left unturned. Because even enough doesn’t cut it. We have to do it all. We have to do it together. And we have to do it now.

Every connection counts. Defy MS by creating connections, creating a world free of MS.

Participating in the 2013 MS Leadership Class was an enlightening experience. Not only did I come to more fully understand the challenges of living with MS, but I also learned about the recent advancements made in treatment and the partnerships and alliances formed within the community to help those with MS. I enjoyed meeting the respected business leaders in my class and had many opportunities during class to learn from them better practices to enhance my leadership skills. I can truly say it was an honor to work beside these business leaders on MS Service day and as a class in our fundraising efforts so that one day there will be a cure for MS! Celeste H. How Your Dollars Are Spent MS stops people from moving. The National MS Society exists to make sure it doesn’t. We do this through a collaboration across chapters, regions and home office, by funding more MS research, providing more services to people with MS, offering more professional education and furthering more advocacy efforts than any other MS organization in the world.

Chapter Programs & Research Highlights Since 1953, the Georgia Chapter has been providing outstanding comprehensive programs and support services designed to help individuals and families affected by multiple sclerosis. Today, the Georgia Chapter serves 9,000 individuals living with MS. A hallmark of our efforts is research. We are a driving force of MS research, relentlessly pursuing prevention, treatment and cure. Currently, there are four major research projects under way at Emory University and Georgia Health Sciences University, funded in part with dollars raised by the communities we serve in Georgia. Chapter Financial Information In fiscal year 2013, seventy-nine cents of every dollar raised in the Georgia Chapter was spent towards creating a world free of MS. The Georgia Chapter depends on community support to fund local programs and accelerate national research projects to identify the cause and cure of MS.

One of the most powerful experiences for me in the leadership program was the MS service day in which we teamed with Home Depot to help build and repair homes for community members with MS. It turned out that the person my team worked with lived right around the corner from me and I had never met her. MS affects every community and the leadership class makes a tangible and positive difference. Karen Steadman, PhD Leadership Futures, Inc. Class of 2013

Leadership Class Hall of Fame One great thing that the MS Leadership Program does is to bridge the gap between being a leader in the workplace and being a leader in your community. This program provides an opportunity to develop your own leadership skills, while giving back to have a positive impact in the community. In a leadership development program at my office, one of the other participants asked how best to demonstrate leadership. The first thing that our executive leaders shared is that one of the best ways to demonstrate leadership is through your efforts in the community. Sample Fundraising Letter Date

Dear: I am writing to you today to share some great news. I have accepted the nomination to join local business men and women in the MS Leadership Class of 2014 in Atlanta, Georgia. As you can imagine, I feel honored and privileged to be singled out for such recognition. It also gives me an opportunity to enhance the work of a great organization like the National MS Society (www.nationalmssociety.org). The core belief of the MS Leadership Class is that a person who aspires to great leadership also champions community and social responsiveness. I want to ask if you would join me in my efforts to create awareness and greater understanding of the disease by making a contribution on my behalf. The National MS Society is creatively finding ways to enhance awareness, increase fundraising capacity and achieve winning performance in the areas of advocacy, services and research funding for people living with MS. My goal is to raise $ ____________ to fund research and help champion the rights of people with disabilities, namely 9,000 Georgians living with MS. You can go to my personal fundraising website at (Insert Personalized Fundraising Website URL Here) and follow the prompts to make a gift. I will be notified of your gift in a timely manner. Of course, you can also mail a check to me, made out to the National MS Society. I am grateful to you for your consideration. We live in a high-dollar world of scientific research. Nonetheless, you are supporting an organization that is completely committed to creating a future free of MS. I know that your generous gift in any amount will capture and affirm, individually and collectively, what it is to make notable and deliberate contributions toward advances in research and treatment, moving us closer to a world free of MS.

Warmest regards,

MS Leadership Class 2014 Member
