NATIONAL BAR ASSOCIATION ANNUAL CONVENTION & EXHIBITS PRELIMINARY AGENDA

TUESDAY, AUGUST 2, 2011, Continued 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon NBA Presidential Showcase “The New Civil Rights Frontier: Deconstructing the School-toPrison Pipeline” In the last decade, schools have resorted to extreme disciplinary measures -- including the use of punitive tools and approaches of the criminal justice system -- effectively removing children from standard educational environments and steering them down a one-way road toward prison. These various policies, referred to as the School-to-Prison Pipeline (“STPP"), force children out of school and hasten their entry into the juvenile, and eventually the criminal, justice system, where prison is the end of the road. Historical inequities, such as inadequate school resources, lack of teacher training, segregated schools, concentrated poverty, and racial disparities in education and law enforcement, all feed this pipeline. This is the modern civil rights challenge of our era. Lawyers must get involved. The community must get involved. Hear leading experts discuss the problems and the solutions in a very dynamic and interactive discussion, that will arm you with the knowledge necessary to deconstruct the STPP.
