WHAT IT IS I remember back in Singapore when Manhattan Fish Market first opened there – there were long queues to dine in and the restaurant was always full. We were intrigued; and we kept coming back. Fast forward many years later, I see history repeating itself here in Yangon. The Manhattan Fish Market, fashioned after the Fulton Fish Market underneath the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, finally opened in April, after months of tempting us online with their lip-smacking photos of American-style seafood. ATMOSPHERE Located along Strand Road (also known as Kannar Road) and next to Union Bar, the MFM is an inviting casual restaurant – it’s spacious with bright colours, the menu is visually-engaging, the staff are polite and ubiquitous, and the food – where do I start? This place packs it in very quickly especially during lunch time so a reservation is recommended. Whilst waiting for your food to arrive, take advantage of photo opportunities with the fun props they on standby. RECOMMENDATION Two things that stood out; firstly, their secret recipes for their sauces, and secondly, options as to how you’d like your seafood served – flamed, baked, grilled, fried or poached. Take your time with these choices – but not too long ‘cuz you might end up drooling every time a staff brings out something from the kitchen. We cannot confirm or deny that this happened to us. Highly recommended were the Fried Country Mushroom; this is best to have immediately when served as they’re still steaming hot and dipped in their Cajun Honey Mustard sauce and the Sexy Hot Whole Fish, baked in spicy broth with scallops, onions and celery and wrapped up in foil to keep the juices in. We were especially thrilled with the Flaming Seafood Platter – a big pan of fish fillets, calamari, oysters and huge prawns – all grilled to perfection. The highlight to this smorgasbord was when they brought this platter and flamed it just before it’s set onto your table. PRICES Prices ranges from 3,400Ks (Creamy Mushroom Penne/Spaghetti) to 38,800Ks (Grilled Flaming Lobster Platter).
