he 26th of April 2015 marked the union of two of South Africa’s most respected and prominent judiciary members, Western Cape Judge President Jagyaa Hlophe and Judge Gayaat Salie-Hlophe. The Cape Town power couple were married in the presence of family and friends - the nikah ceremony was held at a mosque in Claremont, which was followed by an intimate reception at the picturesque Steenberg Golf Estate, in Tokai, Cape Town. In an interview with Ayesha Najib, Judge Gayaat Salie-Hlophe shares some insight into the big day and how it all came together.

The Honourable Judge Gayaat Salie-Hlophe is an inspiration to many women who dream of one day reaching the pinnacle of their careers. Can you give us a brief background of your academic & professional history? I attended high school in the 1980’s and was extremely motivated by the inequalities which I had experienced and observed as a young South African female to pursue a career in law. I graduated from the University of the Western Cape in a Bachelor of Arts (Law) degree followed by a LL.B degree. Upon my admission to the attorney’s profession I was employed as an attorney at a big law firm in Cape Town. As I was keen to also have a family of my own, I launched a private practice which allowed me the flexibility to have children whilst pursuing my profession. This proved to be a challenging task, as I went on to having three daughters and juggling the demands of a demanding career in what one can certainly still call a male dominated profession. I, however, chose to utilise the adversities which I had experienced as a springboard from which to leap and reach my further goals. After years in practice I was invited to serve as an acting judge on the Western Cape High Court bench. Following a number of acting terms and a nerve-wrecking public interview before the Judicial Services Commission, I was appointed as a permanent judge. muslimbride.co.za | 17

How long did it take to plan your wedding? From the moment I accepted the proposal of marriage to the Judge President, my head was spinning in all directions! With so many things to plan, I relied on the support and love of my family and friends. My husband-to-be was my pillar of strength, with his eternal calm and poise. As exciting and stressful as wedding planning is, it took us just over 3 months to put it all together. Did you use a wedding planner? I went online and searched for wedding planners in Cape Town whom has experience with Muslim weddings. So the name Nicola Gibberd of Nicola Jane Events popped up. A fashion blogger wrote about her wedding experience, planning a wedding which was to be held in Cape Town, whilst she and her fiancé were based in Johannesburg. I phoned Nicola and it was as easy as that to find the most amazing and insightful wedding planner. How did you balance the wedding planning process with such a demanding career? Fortunately for us the High Court term started

on 29 January 2015 which afforded us some time from the beginning of January to attend to the initial planning such as sourcing a wedding planner, photographer, venues, dress designer etc. Admittedly, as soon as the demands of my work compelled me to focus differently, I relied on the enthusiasm of my wedding planner to put into reality the idyllic picture which I had created in my mind of my wedding. I resorted to weekends and after working hours during the week to meet with those who worked on our dream wedding. Can you tell us about your wedding dress? As I could not find an “off the shelf” bridal dress that suited me, I had my wedding dress custom made by Gadija Slemang of Bridal Edit. She had designed and manufactured the wedding gown of my cousin and I had no doubt that she could meet my expectations. I went through so many bridal magazines and online bridal gown images to capture what I envisaged as the perfect dress for me. The options are endless and the variety could be overwhelming. Ultimately though, I sought an elegant and simple look but with a bit of a regal touch. I opted for a lace bodice with tulle flaring at the bottom and a super long (cathedral) veil

Guests were invited for breakfast after the Nikah at Stegman Road Mosque, Claremont to The South Club situate at the Newlands Cricket Grounds. We exchanged wedding rings and in the presence of our friends, family and colleagues, we also exchanged our vows for our civil union. The breakfast event was followed by a luncheon at the main venue, Steenberg Golf Estate in Tokai. It was the first venue which we went to look at during our search for suitable venues. The beautiful flora and the endless vineyards with the backdrop of our mountains resonated so strongly with our venue ideals that we immediately secured the venue for the 26th of April 2015 and we looked no further.
crystals featured as the centre pieces to the rounds tables. Cream table linen complimented the golf tiffany chairs and the cream rugs which lined the aisle. We chose cream draped material for the staged area with white chairs and ottomans. Balanced on either side of the staged area were tall standing brass candelabras with white candles. I selected a boxed set of cream and gold macaroons as wedding favours and it served as pretty decoration at each plate setting. The music was classical and romantic. The bridal group entered the venue to the uplifting classical sound of Pachalbel’s Canon in D. The weather was beautiful. Lots of sun and no wind is a bonus on an autumn day in Cape Town. The setting overlooking the mountains, vineyards and endless stretches of greenery offered us the best for our wedding décor and indeed a very special day.
Describe the décor at your reception? I opted for décor that was soft and elegant with an opulent flair. Tall brass candelabras with white candles softened by pink tiger lilies and hanging

Can you share some special unforgettable moments from your wedding day? With the blessings of the Almighty, the day holds so many special moments for me. The most memorable undoubtedly was waking my daughters in the morning and getting dressed. Hearing their cheerful and innocent voices chatting and laughing around me calmed my anxiety and assured me of the journey ahead. Having a quiet moment with my elderly dad and big brother offered the solace that comes with good and pious company. Family, friends and colleagues from diverse backgrounds embracing the celebration of our Nikah was deeply fulfilling to us and an exceptional honour. Tell us about the Nikah ceremony? The Nikah was at 09h30 followed by a breakfast reception at 10h30 and a lunch reception at 13h00. I was not present for the Nikah having opted to wait with my bridesmaids as well as other guests at the breakfast reception. My husband arrived from the Nikah and winked at me. It dawned upon me that I had sealed a future with my soul mate and my partner for life.
There were moments when I shed tears of joy. Hugging my uncle who had been a pillar of strength and support through many challenges had most certainly been the most emotional moment at the pinnacle of such a happy occasion. The breakfast reception was a labour of love by my aunt and a team of loved ones whom touched my heart with the beautiful presentation that they had put together for the event. It resonates the strong philosophy that the love of a family is life’s greatest blessing. Greeting my father as the day had drawn to an end and hearing his whispers of joy warmed my heart and of course, I thought of my mom, who had passed away years ago and whose memory we cherish in our hearts. What advice would you give other brides to be currently planning their wedding? Take a deep breath and put pen to paper. Scribble notes, append your ideas to a notebook and soon you would have a collage of options. Include your partner in these thoughts and discussions. Planning a wedding is like being a conductor of a symphony orchestra. Each musician offers a vital contribution to the ultimate ensemble. Make sure it sings the tune that you want to hear. In other words, focus on that which you value and what

you identify with as a celebration of who you are and the partnership you are entering. Communicate your feelings, wishes and dislikes in a respectful and honest way to those who are there to help and support you so that they can collaborate into offering you the ideals for your special day. Looking back would you have done anything different on your wedding day? Indeed so often it happens that you look back on an event in your life and wish you could have done something differently. I caution brides to appreciate that not everything will develop exactly according to plan. That is certainly part of the reality of such an event. My wedding was no exception. Yet, as I reflect on this day that will be part of my life’s memories forever, I realise that it turned out better than I could have ever wished for. I would do it all over again‌.just as it happened.

Across The Pages Of History By Zakiyya Elias Mansoor It is the age-old tradition. It is the smell that every bride knows and a ritual every young woman must pass through. Henna, or as it is more colloquially known, mehndi. The application of this temporary dye is so much more than just a fad, it is a tradition, a custom, a science. The oldest record of henna application dates back 9000 years. At that time the Indians, Arabs and West Africans were already using this paste. However, their use for it was very different than the contemporary use of henna. The Arabs, Indians and West Africans all had one thing in common; they lived in hot and humid climates and without modern day air-conditioning, turned to Mother Nature. They found that the henna plant, when made into a paste, had cooling properties. They would apply the paste onto their palms and the soles of their feet. For the time that the henna remained there, it would cool them down. The discovery of henna ‘patterns’ was an accident. When the henna began to wear off, it would do so unevenly. The
parts of the hand or foot used more often would fade faster than those used less often. This created ‘patterns’ and from this henna art, as we know it today, evolved. Henna is today applied on multiple parts of the body and the hair. The original henna paste is made from the henna tree. The leaves of the tree are dried, crushed and then transformed into a creamy paste which leaves a brown/ reddish orange stain. A recent trend, especially with brides who aren’t fond of the henna smell or colour, is the white henna.. This can be found in a paste, which is usually some form of white body paint which can be easily removed with baby oil. It does not damage the skin and produces breath taking designs if used correctly. Today, henna is more than just a substance used as internal air-conditioning. Henna is an art. It is a tradition and a custom. It is more than just a decoration on a hand. Henna is stitched into our history and from there it will continue to evolve.

The objective is to be a celebrate the success of Muslim women as well as provide a platform for new and emerging talent to break through along with inspiring future generations with messages of empowerment and support. The recent Moslema in Style Fashion Forward 2015 (MISIFF 2015), made its mark in fashion history for being the platform that showcased 12 Muslimah fashion labels from Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. The international event which was held on the 7th and 8th of November 2015 at the Putra World Trade Centre - Malaysia, was officiated by YB Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin, Deputy Minister of Malaysia Tourism and Culture. This has been a long awaited event among Muslimah fashion fans - MISIFF 2015 fashion show, showcased international Muslimah fashion designers such as By Anita Yuni, Anniesa Hasibuan, Eksotik by Indah Ambarwati from Indonesia and Sufyaa from Singapore. In addition to this, local designers such as Sri Munawwarah, Minaz, Haziq Scarf, Losravelda, Werda, Telekung Siti Khadijah and Shara Islamic also participated in the fashion show. There were also exhibition booths offering various fashion labels and products specifically for women and families which proved quite popular among the visitors. Each of the MISIFF programs provides access to Malaysia’s Muslimah fashion designers and retailers, to introduce and position their brands internationally. The good relationship between Moslema In Style and foreign sponsors established years ago through events such as Muslim Lifestyle Expo UK, Islam Channel UK, Saverah Women Expo London, Indonesia Muslim Fashion Week, Modanisa Istanbul and the most recently, Moscow Halal Expo, enabled Moslema In Style the exclusivity to present and penetrate the larger Muslim and Halal International markets with Malaysian brands. “Our effort in bringing Malaysia’s name forward through Muslimah fashion platform really requires the support and cooperation from all parties,” said Emy Yuzliza, founder of Moslema In Style in her speech. Aligned with Islamic practice in presenting Muslimah fashion, only women were part of the backstage crew from make-up artists to stylists. The fashion shows were accessible only to invited female guests. International hijab icons such as Kubra Kapki from Turkey, Aydha Mehnaz from Bangladesh, Azizah Talusan from the Phillipines and Romy Ahmed from United Kingdom were invited for the “Hijab Talk” session. Emy added, “During the ‘Hijab Talk’ session - which was open to public, we were able to see and hear the experiences of these hijab icons in their countries. he Cape Malay bride’s headdress or Medora, is one of the traditional parts of the Malay ceremonial attire which is embroidered using golden or silver clinquant threads. The veil is embroidered with floral motifs that are inspired by nature. The motifs used comply with the traditional concept of decoration, which excludes the use of imagery such as people and animals. The beauty of this headdress is highly dependent on the use of clinquant. This thin ribbon-like metal thread is widely used in Malay couture & royal embroidery for ceremonial purposes and also for the newlyweds’ attire.
Throughout the world, the Malay use various words to refer to the same type of clinquant thread veil, such as Medora (Cape Town, South Africa), ‘Selayah Keringkam’ (Sarawak, Malaysia and Brunei), ‘Tudung Kelingkam’ (Kelantan, Malaysia) - This connects the Malay tradition in South Africa with the core Malay world in South East Asia. The style of Medora pinning by the Malays in Cape Town is unique, as it focuses on the creativity of the wedding styles of female elders in the bride’s family. For the Malaysian, Indonesian and Bruneian Malays, the Keringkam veil plays the same role as the Medora, however this headdress is not shaped in

the same way as the Medora style. The Keringkam veil is worn loosely on top of another head covering as a traditional accessory.
Medora and Keringkam veil are the crowns of Malay brides that show a close cultural bonding between Malays in different parts of the world.
Even though the Medora is worn and styled differently from the rest of the Malay world - its function as a headdress of the bride remains the same. Its usage portrays a symbol of purity and the element of modesty, cultural richness and respect to the Malay roots, embraced by the bride and the women in her family. It allows her to beautify herself and adhere to Shariah (Islamic law) as well. Indeed - what a beautiful way to accomplish this!
This being a typical “Malay” tradition doesn’t stop others from different cultures to use it as part of their bridal outfit. It will add diversity and a unique quality to any bride that chooses to adorn herself with this element of elegance. This long historical and cultural value of the Malay roots are richly preserved and cherished for the future generation...a tradition worthy of being passed on.

Aabidah & Imran What was the most memorable part of your day? The entire day was absolutely amazing. Being with family and friends while achieving such a huge milestone really made it more memorable. Describe your wedding gown... My wedding gown was an unconventional blush peach dress with a fully beaded lace bodice. I also had a three metre long Italian styled veil with beaded lace at the border. The most emotional part of your day... This had to be whilst I was in the mosque for the Nikah and realised that I am finally married and that a new journey in my life was about to begin. Describe your reception.... We had an early lunch reception after the Nikah. This had worked out perfect for us as it gave us enough time to take pictures before sunset. The reception was beautifully decorated in white with vintage books and pearls as table centrepieces. I was fortunate enough to have a very supportive family who did the catering for the day.

Anisa & Yasin What was the highlight of your day? The moment after the Nikah - the feeling that the Almighty put in my heart was something that I never felt or thought that I would ever feel. I chose a beautiful lace dress which was elegant and comfortable. My mom and I chose the fabric for my vintage styled ivory gown - which had silver embroidery, lace and beading. I spent alot of time on Pinterest searching for what I liked - in the end due to my petite size, I decided on something that was fitted and flared from the hip. Any advice for future brides.... Take each day as it comes. If you need to plan anything, do so in advance. Keep all of your thoughts in one place - I used a wedding planning book to help with this. I also delegated alot of planning to my family and friends as I didn’t want to be a control freak.

My dress was inspired by a Ziad Nakad design. Since a wedding is both intimate and personal for a woman the design was tweaked to fit both my personality and style. It was a vintage styled gown with lace and ceramic beadwork filling up the bodice, sleeves and border of the gown. The most emotional part of your day... He greeted me and kissed my forehead - we were married. I recall an overwhelming feeling of peace. Thinking about it now, months of prep and stressing was all worth that single perfect moment. Describe your wedding gown... The design was a combination of different dress styles and turned out exactly the way I envisaged. The dress was full lace with the bodice having an elegant vintage feel whilst the bottom was more chic with a long train. The most emotional part of your day... Greeting my parents who are the most amazing role models and thanking them for their sacrifices and their support. Any advice for future brides.... Try your best to enjoy the lead up to your special day and don’t stress too much. Accept whatever goes your way and more importantly, whatever does not. It will remain a memory that will be cherished for a lifetime. It is integral that everything is done to perfection, which is not an easy feat. Planning a wedding is one of the most harrowing and difficult tasks that any event planner can take on. As an event designer, my design

philosophy is to help and assist my clients, assuring that their event will not only look great but won’t break the bank. Many clients have questions about the subject of floral arrangements. Why are floral arrangements so expensive? Do we really need that many flowers? What else can we do to make our function look exclusive yet remain within our budget? What do we do with all the arrangements when we are done? From past experience, I can say

that “YES” floral arrangements are expensive, but they also make the event memorable, adding that lasting ambience. Here are a few guidelines to take into consideration when it comes to floral arrangements. I call it “Going Green on Flowers”

The idea behind this is basically recycling and reusing your floral arrangements from the first event until the main event. Careful thinking and planning will be necessary so your guests do not realize that they are seeing the same arrangements they saw the previous day. • First decide what functions you are hosting and on which day. • Discuss with your event planner your themes, styles and concepts. • Find a florist that you are comfortable with and invite him/her to meet with you to discuss the event, your budget and the plan to reuse the flowers. • Pick a basic colour for your arrangements. I suggest white as it goes with everything. From there you can choose a secondary flower that will match your event to work as an accent colour for that day. Always make sure you choose flowers that are in season as they are cheaper than those which are rare to find. • With at least 80% of the arrangement in white you need only a few extra flowers to insert in the bouquet to bring out the colour of the event. This way, the florist will be paid for making the main bouquet, which you can then change on your own to eliminate the extra cost during the week. • I suggest that the florist comes back on the wedding day to touch up and neaten the arrangements so they look perfect for the main event. • Before the wedding you need to decide what you prefer to do with the arrangements once the wedding is over. Would you prefer announcing that guests can help themselves to one to take home, or would you prefer to personally gift them to certain guests?
make your floral arrangements into gifts 1. Collect all the floral arrangements after your event. 2. Assemble chocolate truffles on skewers and place into the arrangements. 3. Add a thank you card using any extra envelopes from the wedding invitations. 4. Add a bottle of personalised water from your wedding. Deliver to family and friends, thanking them for all of their help and love during the week.
Adding the personal touch of chocolates and thank you cards gives you a very creative and clever plan to dispose of your arrangements in a classy way. There you have it… an event etched into the hearts of many and a most unforgettable one, indeed! muslimbride.co.za | 81

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE IS DEFINED AS THE CAPACITY TO BE AWARE OF, CONTROL, EXPRESS ONE’S EMOTIONS AND TO HANDLE INTERPERSONALRELATIONSHIPS JUDICIOUSLY AND EMPATHETICALLY. Marriage today in many instances has become a site of contestation and struggle. Emotions run high and in the heat of the moment injudicious things are said that one regrets later. You have an action and a reaction. There is a diminishing minority who has self-control in both instances. It is imperative for all of us to develop our emotional intelligence.. • How often have spouses complained about the insensitivity of their partner? • How often have spouses complained about being humiliated? • How often have spouses complained about the pettiness of their partner?. What are the attributes of those individuals who are emotionally intelligent? They... • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Are observant about people and their motivation. Have dealt with their past and look ahead to the future. Listen with empathy.Are adept at initiating conversations with strangers and friends. Are socially competent.Are optimistic and as such do not suffer emotional meltdowns. Take ownership of their lives.Are able to regulate their own emotions. Are able to bring joy to others. See the big picture.Have a get up and go attitude. Realize that each social context demands an appropriate register. Disagree but are never disagreeable. Are never afraid to express their love and affection. Are never afraid to express their disappointment in a non-judgmental way. Have a sense of humour. Think before they respond and before they react.
What can parents do to make their children emotionally intelligent? Parents can do many things. Sometimes parents forget that they can have a positive impact on their children. More often than not their impact is negative. If a child has grown up in a home where there is constant strife where parents have no respect for each other then there is a great possibility this cycle would become a vicious cycle. In the end it is all about emotions. It is also about knowing when to speak and when to be quiet. Silence can also be eloquent. If we can learn to manage our emotions and to respond appropriately to our love ones then we are going to be happy.

The Whimsical Whisk’s Best Friends Soirée

On a beautiful spring afternoon in Johannesburg, guests gathered at the home of Rezana Fazel, founder of The Whimsical Whisk. We asked Rezana to collaborate with wedding vendors in and around Johannesburg and host an afternoon tea to showcase her work and provide you with inspiration for your wedding. Rezana decided to go with a watercolour palette for the tea and the theme resonated in the lovely garden surroundings. A gazebo intertwined with soft fabric and adorned with elegant floral arrangements showcased the latest Whimsical Whisk cake collections. The cakes, a combination of hand painted and buttercream piping were painstakingly decorated to reflect the theme. A coffee bar was set up near the pool and white wrought iron stands housed the delectable treats that were enjoyed. Guests were warmly welcomed and Rezana took the opportunity to unveil the latest flavour combinations from the Whimsical Whisks Spring/Summer collection. Guests then had an opportunity to sample all the delicious treats and celebrate the talent and beauty that was evident in the lovely set up. INGREDIENTS Shortbread Crust: 1 cup (130 grams) all-purpose flour 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup icing sugar 115 grams cold unsalted butter, cut into small chunks Pastry Cream: 1¼ cups milk ½ a vanilla bean, split lengthwise 3 large egg yolks ¼ cup white sugar 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons corn flour

Chef Areeb Ahmed THE ELITE TASTE 1. Preheat oven to 220°C. In a food processor, combine all shortbread crust ingredients and process until small clumps are formed or dough is formed. Lightly grease an 8-inch or 9-inch pie pan and spread pie crust evenly. Make indents (tiny pricks) with a fork on the base of the crust. Place pie crust in the freezer for 10 minutes. Remove and bake for 13-15 minutes until golden brown. 2. For the pastry cream: Mix all ingredients in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave in intervals of 1 minute until you reach a thick consistency. Allow the pastry cream to cool. (Use a piece of plastic wrap/clingwrap and cover the bowl
with the plastic touching the surface of the cream to prevent skin formation). Refrigerate until cool. 3. For the salted caramel sauce: Place butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Once melted, add sugar and lower heat and allow sugar to melt with minimal stirring. When the sugar starts changing colour (look for a light golden caramel colour), remove from the heat and add milk or cream and stir until sauce forms. (You may have to use heat to further thicken or loosen the caramel sauce). Allow to cool. 4. For the topping: Whip the cream, sugar and vanilla essence together until
stiff peaks form when the whisk is removed. 5. To assemble the banoffee pie: Fill the base of the pie with the cooled pastry cream. Slice thin round pieces of bananas and layer from the outer ring of the pie inward until you fill the whole pie with bananas. Pour the cooled caramel sauce immediately over the bananas to avoid discolouration. Add the whipped cream to the top and garnish with crumbled flake (chocolate) .
Salted Caramel Sauce: 50g of salted butter ½ cup ordinary sugar 4 tablespoons milk or cream 4-5 bananas Topping: 300ml heavy whipping cream 5 teaspoons white sugar 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence Chocolate flakes to garnish

How to get glowing skin on your wedding day

ridal makeup may look very simple, but a perfectly executed look requires thought, planning and consultation between the makeup artist and the bride. The most important thing is that the bride looks like herself, but the best and most beautiful version. She needs to look back on her wedding album in 10, 20 and 30 years and still love the way she looked. Her makeup needs to be classic (as opposed to trendy), using makeup colours that complement her hair, eyes and complexion. It should enhance all her best features and conceal or detract from anything that she is insecure about. Most importantly, she should feel 100% comfortable about the way she looks! There should be no doubt in her mind about her makeup artist and her bridal makeup. What should I expect? Expect to wear a bit more makeup than usual. I always advise my brides at their trials that this is not their average “date makeup” application, but instead they should expect a “photoshoot makeup” application. It needs to look perfect up close and in broad daylight, on camera and at night. But it also needs to last for the entire day. Will my makeup last? If your makeup artist uses the right products, application and techniques for longevity, the only makeup you may need to touch up is your lipstick. *Bridal Tip* If you do cry on your wedding day, take a tissue and wrap it around your index finger. Place this finger in the inner corner (tear duct) area of your eye and allow the tears to roll down into the tissue. Do not rub your eyes as this may cause smudging of the eye pencil/mascara and some of your makeup. I will however, recommend a bridal touch up if the bride is sick or if it is a really hot day and her face is sweating. If the bride wants to wash her face for wudhu, this would remove a large portion of the makeup and rather than a touch up, I would suggest that she gets a new makeup application.

very bride wants to glow on her wedding day. These are my tips on how to achieve a bright and glowing complexion using skincare and makeup.
• Exfoliate – Exfoliating means removing the top layer of dead skin cells to expose the younger skin underneath. Regular exfoliating will stimulate the production of new cells and collagen thereby leaving you with a smoother surface for foundation to glide over. • MoisturiSe – Make sure that you treat your skin to a day and night cream in the months leading up to the wedding. Hydrated, healthy skin will give off a natural glow. • Eye cream – The area underneath your eye is dry and susceptible to wrinkles and fine lines. Use a good eye cream with anti-aging benefits. • Water – Drink lots of water in the months and weeks leading up to your wedding, again to maintain hydrated healthy skin. • Illuminator – This can be used on the entire face as a primer underneath your foundation. Illuminators usually come in a bright white or pearly white colour and will brighten your entire complexion. •
Eye brightener/under eye concealer – Concealing your dark circles will make you look awake and immediately add to a brighter, more radiant complexion.

EAT RIGHT FEEL GREAT Although many of our eating habits are established during childhood, it’s not too late to exchange certain habits for healthier ones. Making sudden, radical changes to your eating regime, for example, the cabbage soup diet or the no-carb diet, can produce weight loss, but these changes are neither healthy nor a good idea and will not be successful in the long run. Permanently improving your eating habits requires a thoughtful approach, one in which you should reflect, replace and reinforce.
Reflect on all your eating habits, whether good or bad. Take note of triggers for unhealthy eating, such as stress or boredom.

1 - S ta rt i n g yo u r day w i t h a h e a lt h y bre a k fa s t Studies have repeatedly shown that breakfast eaters perform better physically and mentally in the classroom and in the boardroom. Skipping breakfast may cause you to eat an unhealthy snack mid-morning and cause your energy levels to drop late afternoon, leaving you feeling very sleepy and lethargic. Start your day with a high fibre, lean, protein-rich breakfast. Try these for some delicious breakfast ideas: • Half a toasted whole wheat wrap with two scrambled eggs and stir-fried mushrooms. • One slice whole wheat toast, lightly spread with peanut butter and sliced banana. • One-half cup oats soaked in fat free milk overnight. In the morning, add one teaspoon of an omega seed mix, cinnamon and a chopped apple with the skin on. 2 - t re at s a n d s n ac ks
Replace your unhealthy eating habits with healthier ones. For example, if you always skip breakfast, consider having a small “start-up” meal such as cereal or an egg mid-morning. Reinforce your new habit. Do this by using a diary or a reminder on your cell phone. If you want to make breakfast a habit, consider setting an alarm for 8:00 am every day.

Your stomach is growling, but lunch is hours away. You would love to indulge in a snack from the vending machine or snack cart, but you think it’s best to grit your teeth and wait for lunch. Wrong! Especially if you have a full day of meetings, appointments and activities planned! Base your meals around the clock, with one and a half to two hours between meals and snacks. More frequent eating allows a constant influx of sugar into the blood stream, which will fuel your mind and body; it also boosts metabolism and reduces the chance of binging. Replace sugary drinks with water and sugary treats with fruit or a handful of nuts.

Don’t give up those family favourites without trying their lower fat or fat-free versions first! • Swap full cream dairy items (milk, cheese, ice cream) with reduced fat or fat-free items. • Swap fries for a baked potato. • Swap regular soda drinks for sparkling water or a light soda instead. While trimming your calories from fat, keep an eye on boosting fibre. Try these examples:
Include fresh and healthy frozen or canned food in your meals most days of the week. These foods are loaded with vitamins, minerals, fibre and nutrients. Processed and pre-packaged foods are high in salt, fat and calories.

Add a cup of whole wheat flour to your pizza dough. Add chopped peppers to your pie mix. Add frozen berries or grapes, instead of syrup, to drinks. Add a handful of vegetables to rice or starches to add extra fibre and nutrients.
4 - K EEPING A FO O D R E CORD Writing down everything you eat during the day will allow you to know exactly what you are eating, how much you are eating, and your mood while eating. This allows you to review at the end of the day and identify possible changes you would like to make. For example, do you reach for something sweet when stressed, eat out of boredom, go many hours without a snack, snack incorrectly, or eat large portion sizes? Research has shown that people who are successful at changing their eating behaviours are also those who begin with a food record. Seeing your progress will build confidence, nip bad eating habits in the bud, and inspire you to set higher goals.
• A diet high in fruit and vegetables is also one low in fat. Aim for five fruits or vegetables daily, including a whole fruit with the peel for mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks, and a vegetable or fruit portion at lunch and supper. • Choose olive oil and vinegar emulsions over commercially bought salad dressings, which are high in calories. • Whole-grain products are rich in fibre and complex carbohydrates, which give you energy with staying power. Look for items such as low-fat whole-grain crackers, whole-grain breads, popcorn (light versions), and whole-grain pasta and rice varieties. • Nuts and seeds provide fat and some protein, so you will feel fuller for longer. They are also high in calories, however, so don’t eat them in large quantities. • Cheese, yogurt and other dairy products are good sources of calcium and protein, plus many other vitamins and minerals. Choose the low-fat versions over full cream varieties.cream varieties. Changing eating habits for whatever reason you decide is attainable through simple, small changes- taking it one day at a time. EXERCISE 2 - high knees Targets: Cardiovascular • Stand upright with feet shoulder-width apart. • Lift one knee to your chest - then using your arms, alternate in a jogging motion as fast as you can. • Repeat for 60 seconds.

EXERCISE 3 - Chest press and hips lifts Targets: Butt, Shoulders & Chest • Lie flat on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor (or bosu ball, physio ball, step). • Hold dumbbells just above your chest. • Raise your hips and squeeze your buttocks till your body forms a straight line from your shoulders to your knees and push the dumbbells towards the sky. • Lower your hips to the ground and the dumbbells back to your chest. • Repeat 15 times.
EXERCISE 4 - BURPEES Targets: Upper & Lower Body • Start in push-up position. • Jump your feet - in towards your hands, stand up and jump up into the air. • Land with feet flat on the ground and bent knees. • Repeat 10 times.
EXERCISE 5 - PUSH UP & MOUNTAIN CLIMBER Targets: Shoulders, Chest & Abdominals • Start in the push-up position. • Lower yourself to the ground and perform a push up. • Drive your right knee to your right elbow, then your left knee to your left elbow and back into the original pushup position. • Repeat 10 times.

EXERCISE 6 - PLYOMETRIC SQUAT JUMPS Targets: Legs, Butt, Muscular Power & Cardio Fitness • Stand upright with your feet shoulder-width apart. • Bend your knees 90 degrees into a squat and jump up as high as you can. • Land with your knees bent and back in a squat position ready for the next jump. • Repeat for 45 seconds.
EXERCISE 7 - PLANK HOLD Targets: Core & Cardio Abdominals • Begin in a plank position with elbows on the ground and shoulders above your elbows. • Keep your body in a straight line without arching your back. • Hold for 30 to 60 seconds.
EXERCISE 8 - WALKING LUNGES & LATERAL RAISE Targets: Legs, Butt & Shoulders • Start with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold the dumbbells at your side. • Lunge forward with your right foot until your knees are 90 degrees then raise both arms to your side. Ensure that the back knee does not touch the floor. • Press up with your front leg and bring the back foot forward. • Take another step forward with the opposite leg and repeat the lunge. • Repeat 20 times.

While I do agree that owning a property is the first step to long-term wealth building, I also believe that the timing for buying a property should be correct. There are many things to consider when purchasing your first home. Renting, however, is much less complicated and allows a young couple some flexibility as they plan their way forward.

Make sure you have enough parking for your own vehicles and at least one visitor parking bay • Other Expenses to Consider Paying a mortgage bond is not the only expense involved in buying a home. Buying a home should be a long-term investment. Selling a home too soon after you buy could mean losing money. The current property market is volatile and property values are appreciating slowly. Owning a property is a good thing, but making hasty, uninformed decisions can be detrimental. Just as getting married is a life changing event, and, buying your first home can set the scene for many things to come. Marriage is the beginning of a new chapter in your life. We often hear the phrase “new beginnings�. With new beginnings, comes a new living space. Be it merely moving into a room in an existing home, or a new home for the two of you. The space you will be in needs to be one of tranquillity and it should encompass the essence of both. The beauty of a new space and a new home is that it can bring in a fresh atmosphere which will reflect who you are as a couple. While it may seem incredibly stressful and intense trying to merge your ideas, personalities and likes, it is not impossible. There are a multitude of resources at hand, but the best option would be hiring a professional in the field. Like with any decisions made between two people, a neutral person that can put everything together in a holistic way is always a plus. Less stress, less confusion, and an end result that will leave both people in a happy space physically, as well as emotionally.
When you walk into a home for the first time and you immediately get the feeling “Wow this is so them!” That is the impression anyone wants when entering their home. That sense of you. Interior design may seem fickle to some, but realistically it is the space we are in that defines us, and vice versa. Adding elements of yourself and your personality can make or break an interior. Too much of something, as well as too little, can leave a space feeling negative and incomplete.
This may still feel overwhelming, but try simplifying it by looking for inspiration. Search the internet, go to showrooms or look at magazines and books. From your entrance hall to your en-suite, the ideas are limitless. By looking at different ideas you will quickly start to establish a look, a feeling and a concept of who you are in terms of your interior design. Don’t forget to have fun, go a bit crazy with ideas. Be yourself and let it show in your space.
We are all so busy with our lives; with work and family that it’s easy to wonder, “Where does the time go?” Our homes are our refuge, and while we are in that space, it’s our time to slow down and be with the one(s) we love. Room with a view How we wish that every room could come with a view. Some are lucky to have it, but for a majority not so much. With the boom of homes & buildings, when we look out our windows, the view is sometimes lacking. Defining a purpose for each room based on view and interior space is very important. Make sure to allocate rooms to a specific purpose. The master bedroom should be able to accommodate the wife’s wardrobe and the husband’s man couch. Having a separate seating area in a bedroom proves to be very convenient and worthwhile in that you have a choice of places to sit in the privacy of the bedroom. It is the heart of the home in most cases. I would suggest playing with wood and colour in terms of the finishes. Your kitchen needs to be more functional, so a minimal approach would work extremely well. The decor comes in when appliances are fitted. Choose appliances that are reliable and have matching counterparts. The tiling & fittings are equally important as we need these to be easily cleaned & not hinder the processes in the kitchen, but rather enhance it. We often overlook the bathrooms, which usually end up taking a huge toll in the budget. It would be wise to have a look around at tiles that will be timeless & accents here & there, with fittings & sanware that will fit into the idea of being functional & sleek.
Colour, Texture & Lighting These three work hand in hand. The intensity of light strongly impacts colours & gives textures a deeper feel. When using colour we need to remember to keep within a certain tone or colour range. This also depends on the feel and functionality of a space. Do you want to feel awakened and energised? Use cool and bright colours. Do you want a calm atmosphere that is soothing? Use warm toned understated colours. Next would be texture. How boring would a space be without different textures? Don’t be afraid to add in different feeling fabrics to an area. This will create interest and movement. Rough textures are non reflective but add mood, whereas smooth textures reflect light and increase depth perception when put next to other textures. Lighting can either be soft or harsh. Warm or cold. Be careful in your choices so as not to make a space feel cold.
Make use of different types of light fittings. You have ceiling lights, wall lights, and freestanding lamps. All these different lights can make a space feel more homely. Be sure to remember that task lighting and mood lighting can be put on different switches, creating different moods. You are starting off a new life together, but do we have to get everything new? No, of course not! The use of existing items such as, a lamp, a couch or a picture frame, makes the space your own! Utilise things you have that speaks volumes about you and marry them with the new. Begin with what is necessary and go from there. Remember that you can always shuffle around items and buy new ones. Allow room for improvement and change. Growing together as a couple also means change. Your tastes will change and therefore your living space will need to change. Gather items that speak to you, that serve a purpose and look good. Don’t buy for the sake of filling up a spot, buy to add an item of emotional or physical value. Once the planning and purchasing are done, and your final ideas have come together and materialised, you can sit back, take a deep breath and smile. It’s now time to enjoy the home you both created.

umayyah Al Suwaidi is an awarded Emirati artist based in Abu Dhabi. She graduated from The Higher Colleges of Technology with masters in Arts & Creative Industries. Her passion for digital art was born in 1996 and in 2001 she released her first collection inspired by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Her first exhibition was in 2003 in Abu Dhabi showcasing amongst many of the UAE’s pioneer artists, then she began exhibiting her work in different galleries all over the UAE, continuing onward to London, USA, China, France, Germany, Morocco and Kuwait. Her work has also been sold during charity auctions such as Christie’s in Dubai 2012.

lia Al Suwaidi started her journey after she graduated from the American University of Sharjah, holding a BA in Visual Communication. Whilst working for the government for 4 years she met a lot of designers and gained experience in her field. Following this, she established Seventeen Eleven Design studio, a print and product design studio, specialising in full branding services. For such a young artist and designer, Alia has already made leaps in her career. She has set out to conquer a difficult marketplace while remaining true to her dreams and ideals, and she is well on her way to succeeding. The Humanitarian side of Abu Dhabi Fashion Days As part of Abu Dhabi Fashion Days, Sumayyah Al Suwaidi devised a unique concept - an art exhibition for miniature mannequins dressed by a selection of Emiratis from different generations and schools. These creatives come together under one roof to dress the mannequin with their own unique ideas and concepts. The mannequins are then auctioned off for charity.

aryam Al Suwaidi, an innovative Emirati interior designer, holds a Master’s degree from Utah State University, USA. She gained work experience since she was 16. Her first summer job was at the Public Works Department in the interior and architecture section where she first learnt about Interior design. Prior to gaining her bachelor’s degree, Maryam studied business administration and communications technology which gave her a good background in business and media. Since graduating in 2010 she’s been working in Abu Dhabi as a freelancer working with clients, designing for residential, commercial, and corporate projects. Maryam together with her husband, established her Interior Design Office (Design Talk studio). Her mission is to continue producing interior concepts with modern Islamic designs and shaping it to fit our modern century. Her future goal is to give back to the community through interior design, and to be known as the Artistic Emirati interior designer producing furniture, textile as well as beautiful interiors.

umaya Al Maskari is a young talented local lady and owner of Petals Flowers and Events. She holds a degree in Business administration. Sumaya believes that her business is also a way to give back to the community – she is involved in humanitarian activities and she gave lectures to students at the AKOUN Entrepreneurship Awareness Campaign introduced by the Abu Dhabi Council for Economic Development (ADCED). Her business has grown from a small flower shop to a cutting edge establishment and does everything from exquisite floral arrangements to magnificent wedding celebrations.

The role of a husband and wife is clearly set out in Islam. A husband is required to support his family. Whilst the husband is given this responsibility, the wife is given full autonomy to deal with her affairs, without being required to share in the responsibility of the expenses of the family household. Any income derived by the wife does not need to be used to support the family. This is in stark difference to our South African legal system, where both the husband and wife have a reciprocal duty to support each other. Both parents are jointly responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of their minor children, according to their means. In Islam there is no such obligation on the wife. Muslim couples in South Africa who are married by nikkah are likely to also get their marriage registered so that it accords with the prevailing South African laws. There are different types of marital regimes in South Africa which govern the contractual relationship

between the spouses. The consequences of each particular marital regime are vastly different from each other. A couple who get married only by way of nikkah, i.e. without having their marriage registered according to the civil law, are given some limited legal protection in South Africa. For example, a surviving spouse from such a marriage has the right to claim maintenance from the deceased’s spouse’s estate. In this case where a surviving spouse who is only married by nikkah can approach the Maintenance Court and apply for a maintenance order against the deceased’s spouse’s estate. Similarly such a spouse can also claim from the Road Accident Fund, for example, for loss of support (this is often referred to as a ‘breadwinner’s action’). If a person dies without leaving a will, the surviving spouse who was married only in terms of Shariah can inherit from the deceased’s spouse’s estate. There are essentially three types of civil marriages - “in community of property”, “out of community of property with accrual” and “without accrual.” All marriages which are “out of community of property” have to registered with an Ante-Nuptial Contract commonly referred to as an “ANC”. If no ANC is signed and registered, then the marriage will automatically be considered to be an “in community of property” marriage.
MARRIAGE
“In Community of Property“ This type of marriage means that the estate of the husband and wife is considered as a single joint estate. In this case both the husband and wife are equally at risk and they equally share the benefits of the other’s assets and estate. Both parties are liable for the debts and liabilities of the other - it doesn’t matter which one of them incurred the debt. Whatever property either of them had prior to or during the marriage, belongs equally to both of them. In the event of one spouse becoming insolvent, the other spouse will in most instances also become sequestrated. The correct marital system applicable to Muslim couples is one which is not “in community of property.” To make the marriage Shariah compliant, the couple would be required to register an ante-nuptial contract out of community of property, generally without application of the accrual system.
The Ante Nuptial Contract (ANC)? An “ANC” is a contract which must be entered into before the civil marriage is registered - it can be done after the nikkah. The word “ante”-nuptial is derived from the Latin word meaning “before”. In America, the terminology used for such contracts is “Pre-nups”. ANC’s are contracts that define how the couple intend to conduct their affairs with regards to the assets in their marriage. Provided that it is not unlawful or against public morals, a couple can create any condition they want in their ANC. However, the most common types of ANC’s are those “with accrual” and those “without accrual.” All “out of community of property” marriages, whether it is with or without accrual have to be registered by means of an ANC. The requirements to enter an Ante Nuptial Contract are as follows:
MARRIAGE
1. The ANC must be entered into before the marriage. 2. The contract must be in writing and signed by the husband-to-be and the wife-to-be before a notary public, together with two witnesses. 3. The notary then executes the ANC document by placing his/her seal of office. 4. The contract must be registered in the deeds registry within a specified time.
Out of Community of Property - Without Accrual In this type of ANC, there are no sharing of debts or liabilities between the husband and wife. Each spouse retains his/her independence and financial autonomy. The assets of the couple remain their own separate property and cannot be touched by any creditor. When the marriage terminates either through death or divorce, there will be “no accruing” of the assets of the couple (i.e. “without accrual”) and consequently no distribution of the assets will be done on dissolution of the marriage.
Out of Community of Property - With Accrual This type of marriage contract is also registered with an ANC and has all the same benefits as the one without accrual. The couple would have to indicate on the ANC what the initial value of each of their estates was at the commencement of the marriage. Thereafter when the marriage is dissolved, a calculation is done to see how much of assets each of the spouses had accumulated for the duration of the marriage. The spouse whose estate is larger, is required to pay half the difference of the net accrual to the estate of the other spouse (who had the lesser accrual). muslimbride.co.za | 143
