Letter from the editor After months of anticipation, preparation, and announcements that were meant to prepare you for this, we are proud to welcome all of you to the very first edition of the Muslim Bride. We have been so busy getting everything ready, and only now as I sit down to write am I beginning to understand the magnitude of what has just been accomplished, and what an absolute honour it is for me and for all of the people who have been part of this amazing journey.

There are so many topics covered in this magazine from Henna application to Arabic eye makeup, however one of the most pressing issues, and I hear it from brides-to-be all the time… The Dress!

What began back in the year 2009 as an idea to create an information resource that would provide its readers with quality content articles to help anyone planning a wedding, has finally come to fruition.

You will come across many dresses in this magazine which purists may scoff at, however rest assured that every dress displayed in this magazine can be covered! We promise! You rarely can find anything from the stores that fully covers you, unless of course you get a custom designed dress. However, as you will see from our photoshoot (page 48) - we managed to get all of our strapless gowns, conservatively covered simply by adding inners and boleros.

When we set out to create the magazine we agreed right away to steer away from any negative connotations and rather to celebrate the Muslim bride. Every bride wants a special wedding, a wedding that is different from any other. She wants a wedding that inspires and moves guests while creating lasting memories. What you will find in the pages of Muslim Bride is just that — a collection of inspired beautiful brides who have chosen to share the details of one of the most personal and emotional days in their lives. We are truly honoured and privileged at the trust that they have placed in us, permitting us to share their big day with you. Much of this would not have been possible without the work of so many committed and thoughtful people, our writers, copy-editors and design team. I certainly had some wonderful contributors to this first issue who were willing to take a chance on something new. The welcoming response we were met with was overwhelming. Indeed, it is humbling to be surrounded by individuals as talented as those whose presence and ideas grace the pages of our debut issue. Their valued input and efforts are much appreciated. This is a huge step in a new direction — to offer a magazine that caters to the needs of the Muslim Bride. The intention is to offer lots of information, including reviews, interviews, inspirational stories, and ways to connect with more wedding professionals.

8 | wwww.muslimbride.co.za

Probably one of the most difficult decisions to make as most dresses sold off the racks (or internet) don’t cater for the Muslim bride. They are generally either sleeveless or strapless usually leaving the bride in a dilemma.

One of the other amazing stories to come out of this magazine, is the opportunity afforded to us by the Abu Dhabi Fashion Days team, who have allowed us to launch this publication at their bi-annual fashion show in the United Arab Emirates. We are extremely honoured to be part of this great initiative. So by the time you are reading this magazine, we would have launched in two countries. And from the amazing feedback we have been receiving from people across the globe, we are sure that this magazine will be reaching many foreign lands. Putting this magazine together has been an emotional journey, yet a profoundly rewarding experience . We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed creating it. This is just the beginning. Other unique ideas and features will be added as we continue to grow. We want to know what you think. Send us your thoughts, ideas and suggestions. We can’t wait to hear from you! We appreciate your support and are so happy to have you as a reader of Muslim Bride. Thank you

ayesha

HEALTH CHECKLIST BEFORE YOU TIE THE KNOT

By Dr Mariam Amla - MBBCh (Wits)

1

General Well-being

Getting married is a stressful and busy
time! Brides-to-be often neglect their own physical and emotional needs in the rush
of planning.

Simple steps to remember include:

6

Tips from the Doctor

• Taking a multivitamin to ensure energy levels are maintained; • Decent sleep patterns; • Adhering to a healthy eating plan (skipping meals can seriously alter your mojo); and • Sticking to that de-stressing exercise routine. Establish some quiet restful time which can help in “calming” the storm of nerves.

2

Family Planning

There are various options open to both genders, some more contentious than others. A good plan is to see your Family Practitioner as soon as you know you are going to
get married, often your body needs three months to regulate and stabilize to treatment. Use this visit to ask questions, ensuring that you understand the method to take any medication, as well as possible side-effects to look out for. This is the ideal opportunity to discuss myths or advice that you are confused about.

Dr Mariam Amla is a registered medical practitioner, for queries about health issues or this article, you can contact her by email amlamariam@gmail.com 10 | www.muslimbride.co.za

3

Menstrual Timing

This is a common need expressed by
brides-tobe, especially when marriages are arranged for, within a few weeks. There are options available, and should be enquired about as soon as possible. I cannot stress this enough! The last symptom a new bride needs is heightened hormone-induced moods.

4

Transmittable Diseases

Some families find it taboo to discuss this important aspect of pre-marital counselling. Being aware and informed equals being empowered and confident! It is important to ensure that you are clear of any contagious infections viz. sexually transmitted diseases. I recommend an HIV test for both future bride and groom, especially if they are in the healthcare sector (students included). Needle-stick injuries are a reality! Open and honest communication helps build trust and a healthy marriage foundation. A further recommendation is a drug screen, as often the hidden disease of addiction can ruin a life, let alone the marriage.

5

Fear of the Unknown

The elephant in the room for most virginal brides is the fear of intercourse. Myths and misunderstandings abound, especially when lines of communication with our families are difficult. Try to overcome your shyness and discuss
your questions and apprehensions
with your Family Practitioner or pre-marital counsellor. He or she can help dispel common fears, and assist you
in approaching this special time with comfort. Remember, feeling anxious
is normal. Talking about it to someone you trust can build your confidence and positivity.

6

Honeymoon Medication

Pack these early to avoid last minute mayhem! If you have any chronic medical issues e.g. asthma, discuss with your doctor what may be pertinent to take along. Some destinations do require vaccinations, or malaria prophylaxis so best to be prepared. I always recommend taking along some medication for nausea and diarrheoa, and an anti-septic like tea tree oil. Ensure you alert your medical aid scheme that you are travelling, and carry the indemnity letter with you on your fabulous travels

Muslim Marriage Registration in South Africa

Remember that the Nikah is not only the romanticized ceremony that causes the union of two lovers, but rather, the fulfillment of a great divine Prophetic tradition. It must, therefore be entered into with due regard and respect for all that it entails and upholds.

or many years, Muslim marriages and other traditional marriages did not have the same legal status as civil marriages in South Africa in terms of the Marriage Act 25 of 1961 (“the Marriage Act”). As a result of this union not being recognized as a legal marriage, spouses and children suffered —women were denied the right to claim spousal benefits from intestate succession, and neither could the children who were viewed as illegitimate in terms of South African Law. The

only recourse they had was through expensive High Court litigation. However, as of 30 April 2014, 100 Imams* from South Africa have been officially appointed as Marriage Officers in terms of the Marriage Act, which means that any marriage conducted by an Imam who is an official Marriage Officer will be recognized and recorded on the National Population Register and will receive the full legal status as enshrined in the country’s Constitution. The Imams were subjected to a three-day

training workshop and had to write an examination with a 70 per cent pass mark to be appointed as Marriage Officers. These 100 Imams have the necessary knowledge of both Islamic and South African Laws regarding marriage and will be able to give much needed guidance in respect of the different matrimonial property regimes. Marriages that are not conducted by an official marriage officer will not be recognized in terms of South African Law. The appointment of Imams as Marriage Officers and the procedures that they take the couple through, provide an invaluable process of advice and guidance. Marriage (Nikah) is a solemn and sacred contract between bride and groom. As a result of this contract, there are numerous legal and financial ramifications of a marriage either in or out of Community of Property (in other words, decisions regarding whether the assets owned by the spouses are split equally between them upon the dissolution of the marriage), including or excluding the accrual system (wealth and property added on during the duration of the marriage). It is therefore imperative that proper guidance be given to anyone before they enter into this life-altering contract.

marriageable age to consult with Imams who are authorized Marriage Officers, to receive this advice and guidance. By choosing to have the Nikah conducted by one of the 100 Imam’s selected as Marriage Officers ensures that the union will be recognized as a legal marriage. Spouses and their children will no longer suffer. Women will have the right to claim spousal benefits from intestate succession and so will the children who will be viewed as legitimate in terms of South African Law, without having to go through costly high court applications. Remember that the Nikah is not only the romanticized ceremony that causes the union of two lovers, but rather, the fulfillment of a great divine Prophetic tradition. It must, therefore be entered into with due regard and respect for all that it entails and upholds. *An Imam is an Islamic leadership position. The term is most commonly used in the context of a worship leader of a mosque and a Muslim community. In this context, Imams may lead Islamic worship services, serve as community leaders and provide religious guidance. Hafez Mohammed Ameen Hassen is a registered marriage officer.

eet the amazing and talented Nawaal, Bcom student, entrepreneur (she has her own fashion label – Jetaime By Nawaal) & now wife to the dashing and handsome Mohamed Rameez Dada. What’s it like when your wedding is planned within a short space of time? In this interview with Muslim Bride Magazine, Ayesha Najib gets to learn how Nawaal Osman handled such a scenario. We’re sure once you read what she had to say, you’ll agree with us that her positive and co-operative attitude helped make it a wonderful experience for all.

INTERVIEW

A month in which to prepare for a wedding! Everything seemed to move so fast, yet so smoothly towards the wedding day itself. Can you share with us the atmosphere at home during that one month? It’s safe to say that there is no other time in your life that you will see how close your family actually is, other than at a wedding. It just brings everyone together in a different way and allows everyone to participate. The vibes at home were incredible, it was a bittersweet moment at the time but the excitement gave us all an incredible rush. So many decisions and so little time! How did it all come together so smoothly, so quickly? Or were there any hiccups that you recall? Everything just fell into place. The only thing that I can remember that gave us a slight problem were the wedding cards, because all of the companies we approached needed way more time than we had. We knew what we wanted and left it in the hands of our set designer Koogan Pillay and decor finalist Aadil Saith. My mum is a huge fan of letting people do what they are best at; she believes that’s when they deliver their best work. Donavan Whyte Photography

Did you choose the venue with your wedding planner, or was it a decision influenced by your family as well? Well, for the amount of people we were inviting, we needed a venue large and comfortable enough which also allowed us to bring in our own caterers. In the end we opted for the Durban Exhibition Centre which gave our service providers the flexibility to fully express their creative talent. Who attended to the finer details from the family side, were responsibilities divided up, or did it just happen that way? How much did you get to stay involved with all the nitty-gritty? Whenever something came up we all just gave our input and went with the idea that seemed to be the best, in the end I can say everything worked out perfectly. The people who were most hands-on, and finalized a lot, were my parents. I was part of the nitty-gritty, but a lot of the time I didn’t mind the decisions that were taken. Everybody must have pitched-in wholeheartedly, including friends. Any special moments, special support that you remember? The support and love that I got from my family and friends was invaluable, and I don’t think I could be more thankful to them. I think a special moment for me was when we were labelling the wedding cards, we all sat around our dining table at home and each had a specific task. One would find the card, then another the name and then assemble it all together and keep each family’s cards separately. At the time it was the most exhausting task but when I look back it was so special. The stage was most unusual and striking. Could you tell us a little bit about it? Whose vision was it? In fact the entire venue was distinctive and beautiful. The long ramp was something I had envisioned for a long time! However, everything else was Koogan, he showed me a few pictures and knew exactly what I wanted. Aadil and my mother also attended to the finer dining details.

What was the most emotional part of the day for you? Like most brides, the most emotional part of my wedding day was at the end. Meeting and saying goodbye to those closest and dearest to me before leaving the hall was heartbreaking I had never cried so much before. Given that there was but a month in hand, how did the wedding dress selection happen so quickly? Did you like and select the first dress you saw or was it the third or fourth? Also who was the designer and were you satisfied with their handling of the short deadline? Any tips for soon-to-be brides in this regard? I think my wedding dress was literally the first thing I finalized. I had seen a picture and I absolutely loved it. The designer was Gideon, he is an absolute pleasure to work with. I enjoyed working with him because he added a lot of his own opinions, he didn’t just say okay. He sort of said ‘let’s change this it will look better’, or ‘let’s add this it will enhance the dress more’. The only advice I can give other brides in this regard is just chill. Honestly I feel like when you stress about everything too much, it never looks the way you want it to. May we take you back to that moment when you entered and walked down the aisle, how were you feeling? Were you nervous? Calm? A mixture of emotions! Sad, happy, super-scared yet so excited. It was the most confusing time of my life, you would think the second you walk into the wedding hall you have this exciting feeling but no, I don’t think that’s real for anyone, I mostly had a zoo in my tummy! How did you feel through the rest of the wedding, once the nikah was over? I was very excited and also a little nervous. Fortunately my nikah was the day before the actual wedding reception which helped me settle some of my wedding jitters. It also gave me time to take in the reality that I was now married.

Which destination did you choose for your honeymoon and why? Was it a joint decision and did the place live up to your expectations? We went to Bali, Dubai and on a cruise in Singapore. It most definitely did meet our expectations! Our main destination was Bali and it was incredible! It was a joint decision, we were advised about the place and we agreed immediately as it looked absolutely amazing! A soon to be bride can be showered with any amount of guidance! Whose do you cherish the most? My parents! They have always been my pillar of strength and always give me the best advice. My mother is a wisdom book by herself and I cherish her advice. I would not be the person I am without both of them. There is not a day that I am not thankful for all that they have done fore me. My sisters-in-law and brothers also enlighten me in the best ways, they will always be people that I look up to! How does it feel to be a married person? Are you still able to find time for all the activities you loved before marriage? Or has there been a major change to your routine and lifestyle? Marriage is a completely different ball game! My lifestyle is the same, but routine has changed. Before I got married I was so used to doing things in my own time. All I can say though is that married life is absolutely fabulous! I feel so blessed to be with my best friend every day!

A

wedding ensemble embellishes the beauty, grace, and majesty of a bride from top to toe, and the shoes that accompany a wedding dress are without doubt one of the most special purchases a bride makes for her big day. They may not be seen, but on your big day, it’s vital that you feel, and look, like a million dollars.

THE

SHOE MUST

go on... By Hanel Appelby

Selecting suitable shoes goes a long way in keeping both feet and bride happy throughout the day. There are many factors to consider when getting the perfect pair, such as comfort, design, and the height of the heel.

CEO - Anella Wedding Shoes www.weddingshoes.co.za

WHAT´S IN

here are some helpful tips: Start looking early! You need your shoes for your dress fittings because your hem can’t be done without the correct shoes. The shoe design also needs to complement, and not overshadow, the gown. An elaborate gown goes well with a simple pair of shoes. Think about where your reception will be held. You may want an open-toe shoe for an outdoor/day wedding or a closed-toe shoe for an indoor/evening wedding. Higher heels are definitely more elegant, but the height of the shoes affects posture. Find a heel that has an added front platform to make it more comfortable. Remember the height of your groom. You don’t want to tower over him with a heel that’s too high. Tall women might consider low heels or flats. However, there is nothing to stop them from wearing elegant 9cm heels if the groom is confident.

LACE: The romance factor is

undeniable.

WEDGE: Many brides are

getting married outdoors on grass, decking, or uneven surfaces. The wedge heel offers more balance on an uneven surface or lawn so your heels won’t sink in.

BLING: Bling is a hot favourite: a little sparkle always catches the eye. COLOUR: Solid, bold colours are in.

Always remember shoes that are too tight, too small, too high, or that cut into your feet are a no-no.

Go with comfort first, then the design.

It is far more practical for women with broad feet to wear a peep-toe that has a wider front for comfort. Wear your shoes around the house a few times before the wedding. You want them to be comfortable on the wedding day.

WEDDING AND PARTY PLANNER

38 | www.muslimbride.co.za

www.muslimbride.co.za | 39

You have established a successful business and are a much sought after wedding and event planner. How did you get started in the industry and when did you realize this would be your career path? I grew up in a very modest home in the city of fashion and beauty, Paris. I couldn’t help but be influenced by the lush, verdant landscape of the country’s beautiful hotels, wedding venues, scenery and ambiance. I started translating that appreciation for natural beauty into a career eight years ago. I am originally a telecommunications engineer and I used to work for a company called Verizon, I used to travel a lot. Travelling and visiting many beautiful places, as well as learning about different cultures helped me realise that décor and transformation would be my next career path. The weddings and events you orchestrate are simply amazing! Are there certain design elements you rely upon to make all your events so extraordinary? The key factors that I rely on when I plan an event are flowers and décor. These two elements help me create a scene or transform a venue into any dream. You have an incredible sense of elegance that shines through each event you create. What is your source of inspiration? I am inspired by a lot of things, like nature and its colours, fashion and trends, and by people I know. The brides who come to me are my biggest source of inspiration. How do you ensure a bride and groom’s personality is reflected in the wedding, rather than the wedding planner’s personality? Here at Olivier Dolz my event planners and I create the setting and theme of the wedding after sitting with the bride and hearing her story. We avoid copying other weddings or repeating any event we did in the past. Every person in this world is unique and has a different story to tell, thus I make sure that this is reflected in every detail in the wedding.

40 | www.muslimbride.co.za

When couples are looking for a wedding planner, what are some good questions to ask? The first thing the couple should have in mind when they want to search for a wedding planner is a budget. After they set a budget for their wedding, they should ask the wedding planner if she/he is able to do a wedding within the budget and if not what can they provide with this budget. Now bear in mind, going for the wedding planner who provides the most elements for the same budget isn’t always the best choice, because I value quality more than quantity. What are some of the things you feel are most important to having a remarkable wedding? Flowers, flowers, and more flowers! They say a picture is worth a thousand words. And since only the pictures are left after the wedding, nothing can make a picture more beautiful than nature and flowers. What are some of the trends that you love at the moment and are there any new trends emerging in the wedding industry? There has been an increase in what is known as destination weddings, those weddings that are held at locations where neither the bride nor the groom lives, or necessarily has family. Top destinations for a destination wedding include France, Santorini, Dubai, Turkey and Italy. In terms of the trend in décor, shabby chic is very in at the moment.

what colour suits best. For example, tulips are mainly found abundantly in April - the spring season. Light pastels work well for winter weddings. If your favourite flowers are not available go for neutral white flowers and a bit of greenery. You can never go wrong with this classic style and white flowers can range from orchids to hydrangea to peonies, roses and astoma. You have organised weddings for some high profile clients, these include celebrities as well as royalty, which has been the most memorable and why? I’d rather stick to not naming names but I can tell you honestly that in every event I do there is at least one thing that is memorable and different from one event to the other. Royal wedding or small, every event makes a unique mark. What are some of your favourite wedding venues in the Middle East? Some of my favourite venues in the Middle East are the Armani Hotel in Dubai, and the Ritz Carlton in Riyadh and Qatar. For outdoor weddings I would also say the Pavilion at the Armani Hotel, and the Waldorf Astoria at Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah. Tell us about the bespoke service offered by Olivier Dolz Prestige Weddings?

DESIGNER

Wedding Trays A lovely tradition that has been passed on from generation to generation, is the exchange of gifts between

the families of the bride and groom. A lot has changed over time, with designs becoming fancier and more trendy. Typical items on wedding trays, called Kunchas, include clothing, perfume, jewellery, shoes, money and confectionery, as well as the use of mirrors, beads, flowers, greens, and anything else beautiful and decorative that you can think of. Nevertheless what really stands out is

the thought and the personal touches put in — maybe an exquisitely embroidered cloth for the base or to drape with the initials of both bride and groom, made personally by a member of the family that could become a treasured memento. So, as you can see all it needs is a lot of heart, and a twist of creative imagination to come up with Kunchas that will bring joy and blessings to the bride and groom.

T

he New York based handbag collection was founded in 2010 by the talented Beirut born designer, Dareen. The designer is passionately focused on reinventing each collection to maintain its heralded functionality and fashion, yet imbuing an inventive twist. Currently distributed in over 50 countries worldwide, the handbags are enjoyed by celebrities such as Eva Longoria & Fergie.

The inscriptions on a Dareen Hakim bag reflect the designer’s fascination with the momentous spirit of her childhood. Within the turmoil of Lebanon’s earlier days, she saw people value life and cherish every day as though it was their last. This combined feeling of resilience, strength, happiness, love, laughter and appreciation of beauty in life’s simple pleasures left an impression she shares through the subtle scripted messages on her bags.

Sumptuous leathers, arabesque calligraphy, dramatic hues – all form the basis of style behind each Dareen Hakim creation. Celebrating at once tradition and function, her collection’s clutches enjoy a favored status among women inspired to carry a contagiously cool piece of art, one that instantly communicates both warmth and chic.

BRIDAL

Hairstyles By Raeesa Dawood

T

he trending bridal upstyle for 2015 is the natural, dreamy flow of hair — 2015 has walked away from structured looks and towards romance. You can even go so far as to keep the hair down with a soft majestic curl, depending on the style and feel of your gown.

This year’s style also incorporates plaits and braids and ballerina buns, which create simple, elegant upstyles that are classic with a touch of edge. Hair accessories such as hair jewels, fresh flowers, and feminine headbands can play an integral role in creating this look. Adding colour to your hair will create texture and enhance your chosen look, but most importantly stay comfortable with who you are and don’t change too much about yourself. To help ensure her style keeps its elegant look on the day, a bride should always take steps to prepare for the Big Day.

REMEMBER: your stylist doesn’t disappear after your wedding day, they are there to guide and help you maintain your current or new look.

46 | www.muslimbride.co.za

1

Ensure you are comfortable with your chosen stylist and that she/he has the knowledge to work with your facial shape, dress design, personality, hair texture, colour and length.

2

Avoid changing your cut too close to the wedding day.

3

Always use a professional haircare product specifically designed for your hair type.

4

I would advise a treatment every 6 to 8 weeks prior to your wedding to well hydrate the hair, to prepare the hair for your upcoming style and give you a healthier, more shiny look.

5

Ensure your hair colour is refreshed a week before you sit for your trial run so that everything will look exactly as it should on your special day. Very importantly remember that your hair accessories and bridal veil should be used to show the full effect.

6

Stay calm and trust your stylist.

FINDING THE

Wedding Dress

By Quraisha Hassim

OF YOUR DREAMS

Here are some tips to help you stay clear of those avoidable pitfalls brides regrettably find themselves in

8

Ensure that you have a fair idea of your budget, don’t try on gowns beyond this, as it will put a damper on your experience.

9

A ready-to-wear gown can be customized to suit any bride. You may want to add more detail, sparkle, sleeves, or even shorten the hemline. Always ensure that the adjustment is possible, the ensuing costs are within your budget, and that the alterations meet your timeframe.

1

Go in for your consult with someone whose opinion you trust and respect.

2

Do not take your entire entourage, as there will be undoubtedly conflicting opinions and agendas.

3

Allow yourself sufficient time to search for your gown, as some need to be ordered or adjusted. A minimum of six months prior to the wedding is ideal.

4

On the day of your consultation ensure that you look and feel your best, as this will always help when facing that huge mirror in a store. Confidence is everything!

10

When requesting adjustments try not to change the dress completely. Leave the styling, adjustments and designing to the specialists.

Do not be fixated on any one particular style of dress, as it may look completely different on you as compared to the model in the magazine.

11

Most readymade wedding gowns are usually strapless or “open”. However, for those wanting the modest look there are always options available - such as adding sleeves, boleros, and inners.

12

We often meet brides who want to be different, who see classic as cliché. To them we have only this to say, always remember that your gown must stand the test of time.

13

If you haven’t the faintest idea of what kind of dress you want, ask an experienced consultant to select a few (often at a glance, they can tell what shape would best suit you).

5 6

7

Always be open to considering alternate shapes and silhouettes. Ensure that staff at the bridal store you visit listen to what you want, and that the dresses selected match your style and personality. Do not try on more than five gowns per consult as your “dream dress” could be the seventh you try on, and you fail to recognise it as such in all your exhausted confusion.

62 | www.muslimbride.co.za

Y

ou may prefer the rustle of lace, the bustle of tulle, the shimmer of satin, or maybe you’ve always envisaged yourself in a fairytale princess gown sparkling with crystals, or in the svelte, sophisticated silhouette of a sheath dress. Whatever you decide, a perfect wedding gown guarantees that you will always be the belle of the ball.

However after the magic happens they walk out beaming, with something completely different to what they had envisaged. Regardless of whether the dress meets all your criteria or not, or even if it doesn’t remotely resemble what you had in mind, always choose the dress that you feel the most beautiful in.

Being part of the industry for the past 17 years I have met a plethora of brides, many of whom have made the same mistakes as those who have come before them; yet we also meet those who get it right the first time.

It’s as simple as that!

More often than not brides walk in and ask for a dress that is a specific shape, colour or fabric. Some want to match their figure, personality or wedding theme.

Relax, have fun and enjoy your shopping experience. Don’t panic, your dress will find you!

A HANDFUL OF

Henna by Husnaa Kajee

The bride will take off her gown. She will wash off her makeup. Her hair will come undone. It is the bridal henna, the intricately applied art-work that will last the longest. So here are some tips for getting your bridal henna done.

SELECTION • As the bride, you should be conscious of the quality and skill-level of the henna services you have chosen, to ensure you are pleased with the result. • Be selective when choosing a henna artist. • Browse through artists’ portfolios to align the art to the vision of bridal henna you see for yourself. • Have a general idea of what you want for your bridal henna. The internet is filled with images and ideas. Save and share images that you like with your henna artist.

TIMING

PREPARATION

• Have your henna done during your wedding week at a time when you have a few hours to relax, or have it done at night so that you can wrap it up and sleep with it on. Remember, the longer you keep it on, the darker it will be - at least five to six hours or more.

• Make sure you have your meal and use the restroom before your henna is applied. Then, with your arms and feet as a blank canvas for your henna artist, you are ready for the magic to begin.

• Have your henna done two days before the wedding. The henna will be orange coloured on the day it is removed and on the day after. On the third day, it will take full effect, becoming a lovely deeper shade, having taken 48 hours in all. • Remember, the effect that henna has on your skin (the colour) also depends on your body heat. If you tend to feel cold more easily, it may always be light, and if you’re a warm person, it may always be dark. Hence, it is advisable to leave the henna on for a long period of time and keep yourself warm to achieve optimum colour.

• Wear an item of clothing that is easily removable in case you need a change of clothes. Ensure that your sleeves will not get in the way of the henna and wear something you can risk getting smudged, dark clothing is a good idea. • Set aside time for you and your henna artist to be alone, while your bridal henna is being applied. Too many admirers confuse the bride and the artist with suggestions that could end in creative chaos. Like any art, henna is intricate and requires a lot of concentration. • Henna sets into the top layer of your skin, the epidermis. Therefore get your scrubs, manicures, and pedicures done prior to the henna application and in order to achieve the most radiant and fresh colour, ensure that this area is cleansed of hair and dead skin cells through waxing and exfoliation.

Tips to Highlight Your Bridal Henna Apply Vicks or eucalyptus oil to your hands and arms after the henna has been removed. Roast cloves on a saucepan and hold your hands and arms over the smoke and you will see instant results. Keep your hands away from water and friction as much as possible until the wedding, and you’re good to go. 64 | www.muslimbride.co.za

DESIGNER PROFILE

DESIGNING MOROCCAN KAFTANS SALIMA ERREF

W

The Robes of Queens

orn traditionally by royal women, the kaftan has gained popularity worldwide as a mode of dress that

symbolises beauty, grace, modesty and comfort. It looks elegant on women of all shapes and sizes and can be as ornate, or as simple, as the wearer desires. No wonder then that it so beguiled a senior finance professional of the corporate world that she left it all behind to follow her newfound passion for a centuries-old mode of fashion.

www.sallykaftandesign.com

66 | www.muslimbride.co.za

Moroccan-born Salima Erref ’s journey toward rediscovering her heritage began when she was handed charge of running the textile operations of a multinational company. Her day-to-day work environment resonated with her artistic side. She had grown up surrounded by the richness of Moroccan culture and was greatly influenced by her talented and inspirational family. She inherited a skilled eye for design and artistry from her architect father, as well as her grandfather who was a tailor and designer. As a young girl she spent most of her free time at his atelier, where she would assist him with his designs and handwork. This job — being in-charge of the textile operations of a multinational company — awoke in her a desire to use all of her talents, including her expertise in finance and in running organisations, to design and promote traditional Moroccan haute couture and so Sally Kaftan Design was born. Today Salima Erref, based out of Chicago has an exclusive design label that sells handmade Moroccan kaftans worldwide. Her kaftans are designed to reflect the rich traditions while embracing a very distinctive and contemporary style. Many of her designs are unique and are never repeated, which fact gives the owners of these beautiful pieces much satisfaction. She sources only the finest quality materials. A passionate traveller, who loves other cultures, Salima’s travels provide her the inspiration and the ability to fuse Moroccan traditional handwork with occidental style.

LOOKING

EFFORTLESSLY

Beautiful By Nadia Motala

T

he lovely bride is poised and elegant as she makes her way down the aisle. Her gown is soft and flowy, her skin glows, her face is radiantly made-up and her hair coiffed to perfection. In other words, there goes a veritable picture of grace and beauty. For most of us though, looking perfectly and effortlessly beautiful is not a given. And it is not effortless either. But this is the one kind of effort that is fun, and each bride enjoys the pre-wedding routines of making herself beautiful. As a makeup artist who has been in the industry for years, I have met my fair share of stressed brides with deep dark circles and bags under their eyes, skin that’s acted up, or a last-minute hairstyle change that’s not really worked. We can easily cover up blemishes, but it’s so much nicer to have glowing clear skin that lasts way after your wedding.

REMEMBER: all treatments should be done well in advance, never ever close to the wedding day — that’s basically asking for trouble.

70 | www.muslimbride.co.za

TIMING IS EVERYTHING! For gorgeous skin and makeup it is best to start at least six months in advance. That way all the products used on your skin are allowed to work over a longer period for best results, and should you have any reactions you have enough time in hand to tackle the side-effects. You must begin by consulting with a good skin therapist and discuss facial treatment options. She will help you identify your skin-type — is it oily, dry, acne prone, or normal; and also identify the areas where you would like to see the most improvement.

PROBLEM SOLVING

Getting rid of acne scars: Skin peels are excellent and also leave your skin super smooth and supple. These treatments need to be done ahead of time as the skin goes through a peeling and healing process.

Very oily skin? Deep-cleanse facials extract all oily

deposits and minimize pores, but may leave tiny scabs, so the best option is to have deep-cleanse facials done well in advance of the wedding date.

Dark under-eye circles? Usually really difficult to get rid of, however a good eye cream does the trick — again when used over a period of time.

Lovely lips, a perfect canvas for lipstick. Use

a lip balm rich in Vitamin E, this will keep your lips soft and plumped up. You could also exfoliate lips once a week with a toothbrush. This will get rid of dry chapped lips and soften out the lips nicely.

Most important of all skin-care routines is to

drink a lot of water. This keeps the body and organs well-hydrated, giving you lovely, bright and radiant skin.

How to choose your makeup artist?

www.muslimbride.co.za | 71

CHOOSING YOUR MAKEUP ARTIST Your bridal makeup needs to compliment your face shape as well as your features, your skin tone and eye colour. So how does one choose a good makeup artist? Browse the net for styles of artistry that appeal to you. A good makeup artist will ask about the colour, style and type of gown you have chosen and the type of wedding you have decided upon. She will also ask about the theme of your wedding. Imagine an elegant garden wedding, and you look made up for a Mardi Gras festival! A good makeup artist wants to give you the best look she can for your Big Day. You need to ask her about her availability — no point in interviewing someone if they aren’t available for your wedding date. Ask about the brand of makeup she uses; it must be to your liking. Make sure before booking trials with her that you see her portfolio or resumé. If the photographs of her work look to be a little too perfect, then they are probably airbrushed and photoshopped! Choose someone else. Be honest after each makeup trial and tell her what you like and don’t like. Even though we know what would suit your face, we need some kind of guidance from you. If the artist has asked you to pay an upfront fee please ask for a receipt as well, this stands as a guarantee. Make sure your makeup artist is punctual and can be relied upon. Go with your gut feel. If you like the artist and are comfortable with her from the get go, then you will be easily able express your feelings about anything you aren’t happy about, and that’s very important!

Finally, remember to wear your trial makeup throughout the day to see the lasting effect it has.

And above all have fun with the makeup trials, it’s not every day you get your face made up professionally!

Arabian SECRET

THE

By Khatija Mahomed

O

ne of the world’s most popular and timeless makeup trends is the captivating Arabic Eye Makeup — an old favourite that makes a bold statement for any occasion. Bold, dramatic, edgy, detailed and exotic, this trend is sure to leave you and all those who see you, mesmerized. Arabic Eye Makeup traces its roots to the traditional use of Kohl by women of the Arabian peninsula, renowned down the ages for their exotic beauty. Today, Arabian women are known the world over for their exquisite use of makeup, especially their unique eye makeup — Arabic Eye Makeup. So what is it that makes this trend so different from all the others? The answer is Kohl or eyeliner as it is more commonly known. The use of Kohl has an illustrious history, being originally used by royal women in Ancient Egypt, including queens such as Cleopatra, and it fast became a trend followed by common women too. In its original form, Kohl is organic and essentially very good for the eye. It has been used for centuries by men, women and children to treat and heal eye-related illnesses.

When it comes to Arabic Eye Makeup, the two most common styles are the ‘cut-crease look’, and the ‘winged liner’. Whether you choose the cut-crease, the winged liner, or even the double winged liner, each of these Arab style trends is achieved by the overloaded use of Kohl! This is the ultimate secret in creating the exotic Arabian Eye. Applying eyeliner prominently to the top eyelid lash-line is high in demand for so many looks. Incidentally, the eyeliner we commonly use today is typically not the original Kohl. In fact many makeup artists and cosmetic brands use the term Kohl to refer to the soft powder in dark matte shades that applies seamlessly and is easily smudged. Eyeliner, an international cosmetic item and an essential part of a woman’s beauty regimen, is today produced by 78 | www.muslimbride.co.za

leading cosmetic brands the world over as Kohl powder, liquid, cream, gel or pencil liner. These choices give you the option of deciding which mode of Kohl you are most comfortable using. Whatever mode you choose — powder, liquid, cream, gel, or in pencil form — if applied correctly it will definitely make you look like an Arabian Princess. Don’t forget, perfect eyeliner is imperative when it comes to adding shape and depth to the eye. It is the use of the eyeliner that provides the finishing touches to your eye makeup. From ancient times, it is fascinating to see how women from conservative backgrounds and societies, have found such an exquisite way to express themselves through their eyes with the adept use of Kohl.

Secrets & Tips Keep the lips light or nude, and let the eye be the centre of attention. Arabic makeup is exotic and mysterious; complete the look by adding some giant false lashes. Rim the top and bottom waterline with eyeliner to get an even fuller eye look.

The Dietician’s

MEAL PLAN T

With Faaizah Asmal RD (SA)

he wedding dress, the flowers, the wedding cake…. The wedding diet!!! Getting married is a major lifestyle change but so is successful weight-loss and wanting to look your best on your big day- is only natural! Registered Dietician Faaizah Asmal tells us about going about weight-loss the right way, which can make all the difference between living healthier, or heavier, ever after!!

TIPS to get started:

Set goals and make them realistic!

Many brides start a wedding file to keep all that important wedding-related information. Start a weight loss section where you can keep a food diary (evaluate your food diary at the end of each day), write down your weight loss goals, and other helpful information.

Setting impossible goals will only lead to disaster!

Be realistic about how much weight you want to lose and how much weight-loss will leave you looking unhealthy. Visit a dietician who will help you calculate the best weight for your height and help you develop an eating plan specifically for YOU!

Slow weight-loss is better than fast weight loss!

Work out your BMI (divide your weight by your height squared) and work on a healthy weight loss schedule of 0.5 kg to 1 kg a week. Take your weight every two weeks, and if you have cheated don’t stress but simply get back to your plan — everyone stumbles along the way

Include exercise to get to those weight loss goals! Plan an exercise session in the early part of the morning before 10 a.m. Use Pinterest/ YouTube to find different exercise routines, use a stationary bike, or even a skipping rope for a really good cardiovascular workout! Eat fewer calories, and work out more in the gym or at home.

Reward yourself!

Although the reward of healthy weight-loss will be seeing you drop a dress size or two, reward yourself with a pedicure, manicure or even a day at a spa with friends to celebrate! www.muslimbride.co.za | 99

Yo-yo dieting, fad diets and extremely low-calorie diets will cause weight loss without a doubt! But, once you are off that diet, you will gain more weight than you had initially lost! Here are a few bad diets and reasons why they are not a good idea.

Diets that suggest avoiding carbohydrates, fruit and vegetables & only eating lean meat. These are low in calories but will leave you feeling lethargic and sleepy, affect your skin badly and take away the shine in your hair! So do include small amounts of unrefined carbohydrates with each meal, and snack on fruits, vegetables sticks! Go Bulimic? This is such an extreme way to lose weight and highly not recommended! When the body is forced to bring up the food after a meal, the acid produced in the stomach is brought up too. This stomach acid will

damage your food pipe, mouth lining, tongue and lips. It will yellow your teeth and cause electrolyte disturbances in the body — you will find yourself in the ER! And you will definitely be prone to mood swings, run out of patience fast, and be low in energy. Bulimia is a Big No No! Weight-loss pills. Even if the box says all natural, these products contain medications that increase your metabolic rate, causing heart palpitations, diarrhoea or runny stools, and damaging your thyroid gland!

Colon cleansing teas. With this method you are more likely to lose more water than fat, and with each runny stool you also lose important electrolytes needed for important functions in the body! Rather try a diet high in fibre should you wish to detox! Starve yourself? So extreme! By starving and skipping meals, you are deliberately slowing down your metabolism, and when the body does get food it acts as a ‘hoarder’.

Key tips to losing weight well before your wedding day. Start eating five to six small meals a day. This will ensure a constant blood glucose level, reduce cravings and give you all that energy you need to take care of the most important tasks at hand! Eat a healthy breakfast with a fruit for a snack, vegetable-based lunches and suppers with lots of water all day long. Aim for five fruits and vegetables per day! Make sure you up your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables to five a day, this will give you a vast amount of vitamins and minerals you need for a healthy complexion, avoid bloating and constipation, and keep you fuller for longer! Plan healthy meals by using a shopping list. Avoid keeping unhealthy snacks in the house. Swop fries for vegetables or baked potato, choose lean meats over deep fried fatty meats, and swop refined carbohydrates for whole grain carbohydrates. Carry a lunch box when out of the house! Identify sources of empty calories in your diet and AVOID them! Use your food diary to jot down everything you eat and drink from the morning till the time you climb into bed. Look through your diary daily and circle any fruit juice, sugary drinks, doughnuts, chips, chocolate, sweets etc. After three days make a list of these foods and avoid them!

100 | www.muslimbride.co.za

When you do crave something sugary, drink a glass of water and wait 15 minutes before another trip to the kitchen! Choose leaner, low fat meat and dairy. By eating high fat products, we get just over half the amount of calories as opposed to eating lean meats and dairy. And restricting your fat intake will not only be better for your heart in the long run, but it will also help cut down your calorie intake quickly! Replace full-cream milk with skim or fat-free milk, choose lean, grilled meats or fatty cuts or fried meats. Eat your calories don’t drink them! Getting married or engaged is such a happy time and what better way to celebrate than with something sweet and fizzy? WRONG! Choose sparkling water over sweetened grape juice, and dilute juices with sugar-free soft drinks or sparkling water to get that ‘fizzy’ effect! Stay hydrated! A well-hydrated bride will have a clear bright complexion, clear eyes and feel energized. Signs of dehydration include dry skin, dark concentrated urine, increased incidence of urinary tract infections and even smelly perspiration. Keep a water bottle with you and try to aim for two litres of water daily!

VVIP KIDS AT THE WEDDING...

TABLE DÉCOR IDEAS

TABLE ACTIVITIES

If possible, have the children’s table a bit lower to the ground so they can get in and out of their chairs without assistance. They are more comfortable at a table that is their size.

The busier the little ones are, the happier they are during the function. Boredom may lead to bad behaviour and ruin a great time for the children as well as the adults.

Cover the table with white or brown craft paper if you plan on providing activities that involve crayons or other craft materials. Use coloured pencils or crayons to write their names on the paper instead of using place cards. Make the space inviting; lots of balloons and have a centrepiece made of jelly sweets or chocolates instead of flowers.

Set out containers of non-toxic play dough. Have the children do a simple craft project. Give them everything they need in a kit so they can assemble and decorate. Get them activity books with simple activities like mazes, puzzles and colouring pages. You could also opt for print at home activity books which you could personalise. A sticker book.

124 | www.muslimbride.co.za

When designing the table, think like a child, but plan like an adult!

Hasnayn

OUTDOOR VENUE TIPS MENU IDEAS Delight the children with their own special “kiddies” food such as hot dogs, mini burgers, bite- size pizzas, chicken nuggets and the all-time favourite, French fries. A wise rule of thumb is to stick to no-mess food items and to avoid “saucy” dishes with colour as the children are sure to be wearing their dress up clothes.

For dessert: Compact sized delights such as mini cupcakes and cookies. Ice cream sandwiches and popsicles are also fun to serve, but do have lots of paper towels and wipes in hand!

If the budget allows, you could invest by hiring some professional entertainers such as clowns and face painters. Piñatas are a great idea to involve all the children. A children’s photo booth with props. Retro favourites such as hoola hoops, hopscotch and even board games will keep them busy and encourage children to mingle. Bubbles are always a favourite.

For drinks: Individual juice boxes with straws or drinks in small bottles are ideal as you don’t have to worry about sudden spills. For treats: you would need to find out about the children’s’ dietary requirements for this one. You could include fun size packets of some jelly sweets or chocolates. Or, healthy treats such as a packet of grapes, carrot sticks, apple slices or raisins.

The possibilities are endless!!

**These are just ideas and suggestions on what to do. At no times must children be left without proper adult supervision. www.muslimbride.co.za | 125

O

ver the years as a marriage counsellor I have come across a wide range of issues. When there is a desire to find solutions jointly, I have seen homes transform themselves from a site of contestation to a sanctuary. My aim in this article is to share with you practical things that can be done to ensure tranquility and peace in our homes. What is needed is sensitivity. Unlike this case scenario…a woman who was around her forties was looking at a mirror. She did not like what she saw. She exclaimed to her husband, “Oh my darling, I feel so depressed, here am I in my forties looking as if I am in my sixties, my hair is grey and my body aches. Her husband interjected, “Don’t be so harsh on yourself.” The wife applauded her husband in anticipation of his compassion and reassurance. “Yes, darling not everything is not wrong with you, he continued. “What do you mean”? she asked. “You have perfect eyesight”, was his response. Although the above is intended to provoke laughter, a critical thing is that sometimes we are oblivious of the fact that we are hurting our spouses. We are supposed to be garments unto each other.

HERE ARE SOME OF MY TIPS FOR A HAPPY & HEALTHY MARRIAGE Make your spouse your priority.

Be open about money matters.

Grow together.

Pray, pray, pray.

Take care of your appearance.

Be forgiving.

Get to know your spouse.

Have joint goals.

Be supportive of each other.

Do things together.

Have personal goals.

Be of service to others.

Express your love.

Have great friends.

Treat each other with respect.

Demonstrate your love.

Use purring words and not snarling words.

Do not become obsessed with social media.

Know when to speak and when to be quiet.

Read, read and read.

Be authentic. Do not allow external factors impinging on your relationship. Have me time. Have realistic expectations. Do not sweep issues under the carpet. Have a daily routine that solidifies your relationship. Be appreciative. 126 | www.muslimbride.co.za

Be passionate and intimate.

Do not dwell on the mistakes of the past.

Avoid pettiness.

Get to know your Creator.

Be humorous. Laughter lubricates life.

Get to know your Prophet (PBUH).

Praise in public and chastise in private. Even if you disagree, do not become disagreeable.

Finally, my prayer is that we rekindle our love for our spouse and that we give Nikah the attention it deserves.

I went for something timeless, classic and very comfortable. What was the most emotional part of the day? Meeting my hubby in the hall after I had got dressed and without a doubt the speeches to our parents. Do you have any advice for a brideto-be? This is your special day. You can stress as much as you need to before, but on the day of your wedding you need to relax and enjoy it. Whatever is not going according to plan will not be the end of the world. I never really saw him the last month before the wedding. It was a moment of butterflies, nerves and lots of happy tears. Describe your wedding gown. My mother found the perfect wedding dress for me. It was elegant and exactly what I had envisaged. The dress had intricate details and was made up of ivory lace with pearls. Do you have any advice for a bride-to-be? This is a day about two families coming together. You should embrace it, enjoy it and make the most of the time you get to spend with your loved ones. I loved every moment planning this with my sister and my mother. It gives you the opportunity to make more memories before you leave the house and embark on a new journey with your husband. Haadia & Amir Describe your wedding gown. My style is very simple; I prefer a dress that flows instead of one I could barely walk in. Chiffon was used for the bottom part of my dress allowing it to flow, and lace and silk used for the bodice. The end result was exactly what I wanted, simple and beautiful. What was the most emotional part of the day? When I realised that I no longer will be able to see my family and friends as much as before. I was ecstatic that I had a spouse but also sad that I would be leaving the people I spent my life with as we were migrating to Australia. Do you have any advice for a bride-to-be? Don’t stress! Remember your wedding day is just one day out of this new journey. There’s nothing wrong with wanting it to be special and just how you imagined it should be, but it’s not always about having the best décor or the most expensive things. You should remember your wedding as having the best time with your loved ones. Remain calm and everything will fall into place. Luthfiyah & Suhail Describe your wedding gown. I always wanted something timeless and elegant, so I sought inspiration from Kate Middleton’s wedding gown. My long sleeved gown was winter white and made from Duchess satin with lace appliqué. Can you share some special moments from your walima? Due to a thunderstorm that evening we ended up having a candlelit dinner and much to the host family’s surprise everyone still enjoyed the ambience and had a good time. Do you have any advice for a bride-to-be? When it comes to planning your big day choose a few aspects that are really important to you, make that your priority and leave the rest to your family. Safeerah & Shaheed

Safeerah & Shaheed Describe your wedding gown. I wore a mermaid style dress. We incorporated a Grecian design adding the look of clasps gathering the train at the shoulders. I opted for plain material and then used a heavy beaded piece as the clasps. What was the highlight of your wedding day? The Nikkah was the highlight of the day, being in the mosque and hearing the nikkah take place was a blessed experience. Describe some special moments at your wedding reception. As my husband and I walked in at the reception, I was surprised with a candy table at the entrance hall filled with toffee apples and all my favourite sweet things. My husband had secretly planned this for me. The evening was enjoyed by all as we had a few props for guests to take photos and then of course, the candy table was a huge delight. Do you have any advice for a brideto-be? The most important of all the planning is to control the stress. That spoils the beauty and excitement of the wedding planning. You have to realise that not everything will go your way on the day. Relax, take in the beauty & enjoy. It was a feeling of excitement and nervousness as I embarked on a new phase of my life. Describe your wedding gown. I wore a peach and gold ball gown which held sentimental value as it was my mum’s wedding gown as well. The lace fabric was bought in Jeddah and taken to Dubai for beading. The gown was designed and made by Andre Pretorius 22 years ago and he was also involved in the alterations of the gown for me. I used my mum’s gown in its original design and Andre made my bridal hijab for me. Do you have any advice for a bride-to-be? Enjoy the day and take in every moment as the day goes by so fast. It is very stressful during the build-up to the wedding day but remain calm and let everything fall into place. Sheinawaaz & Yusuf What was the highlight of your wedding day? It was my photoshoot. It wasn’t formal in any way and was fun and relaxed. What was the most emotional part of the day? It was leaving my parents’ home and starting a new chapter in my life. Do you have any advice for a brideto-be? Every bride wants everything to be perfect on that special day. Don’t stress about perfection. Focus on the joys of planning, rather than what could go wrong. The little unplanned things are the most special. Those amazing moments you share with your husband will be more memorable than all the details you stressed about and that is what will make everything “just perfect”. Sideeqa & Nathier What was the highlight of your wedding day? It was seeing and feeling the happiness and excitement of everyone for us throughout that day. From the caterers and the florist, to my family and friends, all contributed to making our day as pleasant and easy as it was. Describe your wedding gown. My dress was made of white beaded tulle, lined with off white duchess satin. The top was shaped beautifully with a sweetheart neckline and a fitted bodice upto my hips where it then kicked out to the floor. The beaded tulle was “cut and pasted” all over the top of the dress and the arms to take away some of the transparency and to make the bodice of the dress rich with beading and sequins. What was the most emotional part of the day? Watching my brother get up on stage to surprise me with a speech that he prepared but couldn’t say a word because he was crying so much. I was very proud of him for even just trying, for my sake. Do you have any advice for a bride-to-be? Start the day with prayer and accept whatever happens. Delegate all duties and responsibilities to family and friends. The day passes by so quickly so just allow yourself to enjoy it and take in all the beauty that you are granted on that day. Thameenah & Raees Describe your wedding gown. My dress was an ivory long-sleeved vintage mermaid styled gown. It had a two metre train with a delicate Chantilly lace border all around the edges. It had fine beadwork, crystals and pearls on the entire dress, with a fitted bodice that tied at the back with lots of tiny delicate pearl buttons. Attention to detail was critical for me when choosing my dream dress. Did you have a walima? Yes. It was a lovely intimate and cosy gathering. It was held the following day with just our immediate family and friends present. Do you have any advice for a bride-to-be? My advice to future brides would be not to get caught up in perfection as some of the best moments are ones we do not plan for. So embrace the unexpected and savour each and every moment on your special day. You spend months planning this one day and it goes by in a flash so take your time, soak up all the love, happiness and bliss on the day and be sure to have fun. ith beaches upon beaches of pure white sand, the cool and alluring sapphire-hues of the Indian Ocean, friendly locals, an easy exchange rate, and any number of five-star resort options to choose from, The Maldives is truly an unparalleled honeymoon destination. It comprises over 1,190 islands covering nearly 800 kilometres of the Indian Ocean. Blessed with such natural splendour, The Maldives is easily one of the top resort destinations in the world, being home to nearly 100 resorts, each upon its own private island. This one island one resort concept is a brilliant brainwave of the local tourism department. As its website notes,

“no uninvited people can get onto your Maldivian island reassuring you that you and your loved ones can totally unwind and relax in safety and in total privacy. Everyone who visits The Maldives says that it is like being in a perfect dream There is no denying that The Maldives does have a dreamlike quality to it. Plush beach bungalows, such as at the renowned Makunudu Island resort which houses just 36 bungalows, conjure up the essence of unadulterated luxurious seclusion, the ultimate romantic fantasy. The Maldives can truly provide a dream-cometrue experience for those who want to take back memories that last a lifetime.

After a day spent snorkelling, swimming, or sailing, the iconic over-water villas and bungalows give you the glorious opportunity to sit together and relax, watching the sunset from your balcony, surrounded by the sea on all sides and awaiting the mouthwatering delicacies that will shortly be served up for your evening meal. You could also plan an intimate, candlelit meal on the beach, or arrange to catch dinner yourself and have the hotel chef prepare it for you, for a tropical gourmet experience!

See & Do: To get a feel of the local culture, spend a day at the capital, MalÊ. Consider touring historical sites such as the centuries-old Grand Friday Mosque. Wander through authentic Maldivian markets, examining the local produce, stocking up on souvenirs, or chatting with the affable locals. There are plenty of watersport options available at the resorts. If you are adventurous, The Maldives offers some of the world’s most sought after scuba diving locations, such as the coral covered wreck of a World War Two tanker, or the Vaavu Atoll, known for its unique rock faces, caves, and frequent shark sightings.

154 | www.muslimbride.co.za

You can also book a sea plane ride. It is very popular with couples who want to take their own shots of these islands from the air or even shoot pictures of their resort from the air. You can dive deep into undiscovered waters and explore the Baa Atoll coral reef, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, or discover exotic marine life while paddling the turquoise waters kayak, or sailing on a traditional boat called a dhoni, or on a private catamaran cruise, or by chartering a deep sea fishing trip.

The world-famous Maldivian resort spa services are also worth experiencing and must form an intrinsic part of any honeymoon trip to The Maldives. All spas offer a range of world class treatments and services. Great care is taken not only over the services provided but also in providng you with an exquisite ambience. The Lime Spa at the Huvafen Fushi resort for instance, offers an exclusive, luxurious experience in its amazing underwater setting.

Fast Facts The Republic of Maldives is an Islamic country and religious laws are enforced in the capital and when entering the country through immigration. Please familiarise yourself with these laws prior to arrival. The dress code in the Maldives is typically casual or resort chic during the day, but may be formal in the evenings. When packing for your trip, take into consideration high temperatures, planned excursions, and whether or not your resort has a dress code. The Maldives primarily has two seasons: the ‘Dry’ which lasts

from January to March/April and thereafter the ‘Wet’ or rainy season. The changeover period is around December. The best time to visit is during the dry season. When flying in, you will land in the capital city, Malé. Many resorts offer round trip transportation to and from the airport. The official language is Dhivehi, but English is widely used. The ISD dialling code is +960 The local currency is the Rufiyaa Euros, pounds, and US dollars are widely accepted throughout the country.

The Maldives with its abundant natural beauty, and the plethora of options it provides you to explore its natural wonders at a relaxed pace and within a luxurious ambience, is truly unparalleled. You may choose it as your dream honeymoon destination, but its eternal charm is likely to win you over and invite you to return again for a family holiday.

DUBAI D

ubai is perhaps one of the few sought-after honeymoon destinations in the world that offers you everything — from unabashed seven star opulence, privacy and a choice of exquisite suites and villas with unrestricted views of, if not private access to, the ocean; to a traditional, high-end desert-based experience you’ll never forget. Or if you don’t mind mingling, and are looking for a five-star experience that’s filled with lots of outdoor activities, Dubai is still among the world’s best. Where else can the two of you go on a desert safari, then head for the beach, and thereafter bundle up for an hour or two of skiing just because you feel like it? Oh, and that’s of course if you both don’t spend the whole day at one of Dubai’s recent technology marvels - the Wild Wadi Water Park. Plus let’s not forget that Dubai, one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates, is steeped in a rich and resplendent culture and tradition that is centuries upon centuries old and quite unique to the Emirates. With so much to see, do and take in, spending some time to plan your holiday in Dubai can bring rich dividends.

www.muslimbride.co.za | 157

Glitz, glamour, extravagance and indulgence abound in Dubai. The height of luxury for a romantic getaway would be the Al Qasr hotel. Its discreet yet attentive service, top quality accommodation, the best facilities, and top of the line amenities make this a truly indulgent experience. If you want more of a desert experience — you could opt for a stay at a luxurious desert hotel, or simply opt for an overnight Dubai Desert Safari.

See & Do For a bird’s eye view of Dubai, head up the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. Tickets can be bought for the observation deck, but an insider secret is the lounge At.Mosphere, located on the 122nd floor. At.Mosphere offers one of the finest luxury dining and lounge experiences in the world, with unparalleled views of the Arabian Gulf. Don’t miss the musical water fountains, playing in the evenings outside Dubai Mall, underneath the towering Burj Khalifa. The songs and the fountain show come on every 30 minutes, and are different each time, so to appreciate a few of these amazing performances book an outside table at one of the surrounding restaurants.

158 | www.muslimbride.co.za

For a dip into its unique culture and history, head for the Al Fahidi Fort built in 1799 which houses the Dubai Museum. Its displays include typical Arab households and life like exhibits of an ancient souq. The modern souqs have plenty to offer too. The Gold Souq in particular is a magnet for tourists. Traditional wear with haute couture labels can be found in Dubai too. Ghanati and Amato are among the leading Emirati couture houses.

Incidentally, Dubai is safe compared with other large cities across the globe. Street crime is rare and walking around on your own is very safe. So do take an evening stroll through the winding pathways around Madinat, which almost resembles a small and modern Venice, with its waterways and small dhow boats available for hire. With a wide range of shops and restaurants, it is the perfect spot to enjoy the view of the Burj Al Arab hotel, with its colourful lights changing and sparkling under a perfectly clear night sky.

Fast Facts Although Arabic is the official language, English is spoken everywhere, and aside from accents, communicating shouldn’t be very difficult. Sleeveless/tightly fitted/short dresses are not recommended in public places. The only public transport which is widely used is the metro, which more or less runs the length of the city. A faster and more convenient option would be a taxi. Taxis are widely available, cheap to use, and always run on a meter. The local currency is the UAE dirham (Dhs or AED), which is divided into

100 fils. It is tied to the US$ so the rate is always $1 = 3.65dhs. Buy a pre-paid local SIM card with a data package from mobile providers Etisalat or Du (you’ll find stores in the airports and malls). Tipping is customary for almost everything. In a restaurant, 10 per cent is the norm. In taxis, loose change (coins) are normally not returned, it is assumed they are a tip. In a hotel, for the porters who assist with luggage or valet parking, a 5dhs or 10dhs tip is usual. For services such as a massage or a manicure, a 10dhs or 20dhs tip is normally given, depending on how fancy the place is.

A good rule of thumb would be to leave 10–15 per cent in a restaurant (some add a service charge to the bill, so check first) and round up a taxi fare to the nearest note.

Shopping, adventure sports, sublime and exclusive resort stays, beaches and the desert — Dubai has it all. And best of all, in an ambience that is globally famous for being welcoming and hospitable. Enjoy your honeymoon, and maybe you’ll plan later holidays in Dubai too!

DESTINATION

ZANZIBAR Z

anzibar has become one of the most sought after honeymoon destinations among the Indian Ocean Islands in recent years. Its brilliant white beaches lapped by the azure waters of the Indian Ocean provide the perfect place to enjoy getting to know your better half, to relax, and to soak up the sun if you are so inclined.

There are 25 fantastic beaches in Zanzibar and some are so remote, that the only ‘noise’ that disturbs this peaceful, idyllic sanctuary is the rhythmic beat of the ocean. Where else on earth can you find such unspoilt, pristine beauty? Zanzibar experiences ideal holiday weather for most of the year. The heat of summer is seasonally often cooled by windy conditions, resulting in pleasant sea breezes, particularly on the North and East coasts. Being near to the equator, the islands are warm all year round, but officially, summer and winter peak in December and June respectively.

by Shaheema Kajee

Stone Town itself has been declared a world heritage site by UNESCO. Do take time to venture through the fascinating labyrinth of its narrow streets and alleyways where nothing has really changed in the last 200 years, and you will feel that time has stood still. Mosques, grand old Arab houses, and bustling bazaars filled with Zanzibaris haggling over fragrant spices, exotic fruit, and enormous fish make up this old city and the cultural heart of Zanzibar.

Short rains can occur in November, but are characterised by short showers which do not last that long. Longer showers normally occur in April and May, although this is often referred to as the ‘Green Season’, and it typically doesn’t rain every day during that time. There are many world-class resorts and hotels that line the pristine beaches of Zanzibar. However the elegant Park Hyatt Zanzibar is definitely one of the best and comes highly recommended. This five-star luxury hotel sits majestically on the beachfront in Stone Town, the historical centre of the city. The hotel’s architecture reflects its Swahili culture with a unique blend of Arab, Persian, Indian and European elements. Reminiscent of an exclusive Omani residence, Park Hyatt Zanzibar perfectly personifies an intimate haven within the vibrant, charming and culturally rich Stone Town.

If you can tear yourself away from water and the beaches, and want to go beyond even Stone Town then prepare yourself for an aromatic assault on the senses as you enter the plantations just outside Zanzibar town. Cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper and many other spices can be spotted here and people will happily provide you a description about the variety of spices and their uses in cooking, cosmetics and incredible value for many ailments.

See & Do: The year-round average water temperature of 27ยบC, good visibility and the abundant marine has given Zanzibar the reputation to have some of the best diving spots in the world. There are many dive centres on the island and most run courses using the International PDI system, so the certification gained can be used anywhere in the world.

nosed dolphins that often make their way here. A boat ride is the best way to see them up close.

Do check out the Jozani Natural Forest Reserve which houses the rare Red Colobus Monkey. The reserve has nature trails that you can take and the guides are well-trained and informative.

You could also go to the fishing village of Ras Nungwi on the northern tip of Zanzibar, where the local villagers have built a turtle sanctuary. Here, injured turtles and other marine animals are nursed back to health before being released back into the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

A visit to the Kizimkazi fishing village is highly recommended, not just for its twelfth century mosque, but also because its beaches are famous for the bottle162 | www.muslimbride.co.za

Prison Island, once a gaol is today home to a family of giant tortoises brought in from The Seychelles in the nineteenth century, and is worth a day trip with fresh-caught seafood being served up at lunch.

And if the aroma of the spices has whipped up an appetite you can be assured that Zanzibari cuisine will not disappoint. Just as the land has welcomed newcomers over the centuries, its cuisine also reflects the multi-cultural influences that have enriched Zanzibar, notably the Indian and the Arabian. Since it has a predominantly Muslim population, all food served is generally considered Halaal.

Children should not display their expensive toys in front of their Zanzibari contemporaries. This may instill a false sense of values in the local children, unable to afford such luxuries. Please do not collect or buy shells from Zanzibar’s many coral reefs, as this kills entire reefs and simply encourages this harmful industry. If you want to take photographs of local people, please ask their permission first out of courtesy.

There is so much more to Zanzibar than simply its beautiful beaches. There is a rich culture to be explored that spans centuries, a rich cuisine that is truly a melting pot of many global influences; there is an active effort at nature conservation underway - officially, as well as among the local populace. For the discerning traveller, there is truly much to delve into and much to absorb in Zanzibar. It may be one of the world’s leading Indian Ocean honeymoon destinations, but it holds so many secrets and so many stories that to just visit it once in a lifetime may not be enough. Au Revoir

S

o most of us ladies have spent years dreaming about the fairy-tale wedding, perfect husband and our ‘happily ever-after’, including a fabulous honeymoon. But how much thought do most of us give to packing for the honeymoon? Well, in case you haven’t, I’m saving you the bother.

by Sumaya Razak

Here’s the low down on what’s hot, what are the absolute essentials, topped off with some useful tips and travel facts, plus one Vital Fact — choose what you pack wisely, because you need to be as comfortable as possible when abroad.

THINGS

A FEW RULES

Do not over pack!!! Trust me you will need all the luggage capacity when travelling abroad, especially when travelling to stunning destinations, with an array of malls, bazaars, souqs, and street markets. You are most likely to come back with more than expected. Always check the baggage policy of your airline of choice, as some offer better weight allowances. You are also allowed to carry on board any purchases made from airport Duty Free shops.

What to Pack? Island-style dresses, sunhats, Kaftans, lightweight clothing, jewellery and accessories. Pack extra soap or liquid body wash, as the hotel soap is small. I prefer to carry my own. You would most probably need a lightweight jacket/

YOU CANNOT DO WITHOUT hoody, because most malls and hotels have the air-conditioning set to high, which could make it rather cold indoors. Packing for the desert—lots of sunblock, sunglasses, thin scarves, and a comfortable pair of boots. Carry a travelling iron just in case housekeeping fails to provide you with one. TIP: try to mix and match clothing, bags, shoes and jewellery, solving the problem of over-packing.

How to Pack? Here’s a brilliant space-saving idea try rolling your clothes and pack in layers, one on top of the other. Pack mini sized toiletries.

1. A Qibla compass to show you the direction of the Kaaba and your Musallah (Prayer Rug or Sajjāda). Often when travelling we get delayed at airports, or end up waiting at places with no designated areas to pray, hence it is always advisable to carry these with you. 2. Copies of identity documents & passports. 3. Necessary vaccines for the country you are visiting - these are often stamped on your Visa. 4. An extra set of clothes including day wear and evening wear with shoes - to be packed in hand luggage (incase there are delays or loss of luggage). 5. Flight itinerary, hotel and transit vouchers. www.muslimbride.co.za | 165

TRAVEL TIPS Don’t be naïve, BARGAIN, BARGAIN, BARGAIN, when paying for taxi fares, tours and shopping. Always be alert and aware of your surroundings. Be street-wise. Keep family, travel agent, hotel, embassy contact details on you at all times. Leave a set of photocopies of your passport, credit cards, traveler’s cheque receipts, a sealed copy of your will, life insurance policy numbers, and pertinent financial info with your relatives. Never wander off to unknown locations without a tour guide. Take note of landmarks in case you get lost. When changing currency, make sure it is done with a legitimate bank or in your hotel. You are not allowed to carry any liquids in your hand luggage, more than 100ml each bottle, therefore make use of a travel kit. Do not pack any sharp objects such as a nail clipper or nail file in your hand luggage. Be alert of your surroundings and luggage at the airport. If seated keep your all your travel bags/trolleys in front of you, not on the side. Take into consideration: airport customs can be rather tricky, remember to declare items purchased abroad, if not duty free. Always keep hydrated in very humid temperatures, preventing a sunstroke. When planning a romantic surprise for your spouse, you can contact your hotel managers, who generally are of utmost assistance to guests. www.muslimbride.co.za | 167
