Celebrating the 60th anniversary of Dave Brubeck’s Jazz Diplomacy Tour of 1958

FESTIVAL October 23–27, 2018

Welcome

TO PACIFIC

Reflect on Dave’s historic 1958 tours and his gifts as a musician and diplomat. What legacies. Today, one of the hallmarks of the Brubeck Institute under Patrick Langham’s leadership is a consistent commitment to inclusion. I like to think that Dave and Iola would have been thrilled to see how strong and diverse Pacific’s Jazz program is today under Patrick’s guidance. We need only recall Iola Brubeck’s remarkable role to recognize that women are central to the development of jazz even if their contributions are too often untold. This fall, our jazz enrollments are at an all-time high, as are the enrollments at the Conservatory overall. Our 2018 Brubeck Fellows are one of the more visible ways in which

we celebrate welcoming communities. This spirit is pervasive at Pacific. Surely, Dave and Iola would have been proud to learn that as of this fall the majority of our Conservatory students, 52%, identify as people of color. I join Patrick Langham in opening our home to you. Mimi Fox, Cyrille Aimée, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, our Brubeck fellows and friends will make incredible music this week. As you listen, we hope you reflect on the men and women, diplomats all, who make the 2018 Brubeck Institute Fall Festival such a joy. Welcome,

Peter Witte, Dean Conservatory of Music | University of the Pacific

Sixty years ago, Dave Brubeck added a new job title to his already impressive resume:

diplomat

In 1958, Brubeck and other musicians like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Dizzy Gillespie traveled the world performing the uniquely American art form of jazz on behalf of the U.S. State Department. The musicians were met by cheering fans and the cultural exchange went both ways, with Dave Brubeck famously writing one of his best-known tunes, “Blue Rondo à la Turk,” inspired by street music he heard.

Friday night headliner Cyrille Aimée is a French-Dominican vocalist who is a winner in both the Montreux Jazz Festival’s Vocal Competition and the Sarah Vaughn International Jazz Vocal Competition, and was a finalist in the Thelonious Monk Vocal Competition. On Saturday, the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, a two-time Grammy winner for Salsa and Latin Jazz Band, caps off the festival with their high-energy mastery of the salsa jazz form. Much has changed in the last 60 years, but in many ways Dave Brubeck’s legacy remains as an ambassador for the global power of music. Enjoy!

The lineup for Brubeck Festival 2018 was carefully selected to reflect the intercontinental and intercultural message of unity and peace that was a beacon of that 1958 tour. Regional artists performing at Take Five Jazz Club include Triism, which plays creative arrangements of jazz standards, pop hits and Balkan folk music, and guitarist Mimi Fox, who has performed around the world and was named a winner in six consecutive DownBeat International Critics’ polls.

Guest ARTISTS Spanish Harlem Orchestra After two decades of session work, composing, arranging and producing, band leader Oscar Hernández was approached by producer Aaron Levinson in 2000 about the idea of assembling and recording a Latin jazz orchestra. The result was “Un Gran Dia en el Barrio,” the 2002 debut recording from Spanish Harlem Orchestra (SHO) that scored a Grammy nomination for Best Salsa Album and a Billboard Latin Music Award for Salsa Album of the Year. Based on the success of their first CD, Hernández and SHO began touring and wowing audiences all over the world. Their first Grammy win came in 2004 with their follow-up album “Across 110th Street,” a reference to Harlem’s southern boundary. Featuring guest artist Ruben Blades singing in the style of salsa dura, the combination proved to be explosive. Released in 2007, “United We Swing” earned yet another Grammy nomination. The album features Paul Simon as special guest singing a burning rendition of his hit “Late in The Evening” in the SHO style. Their second Grammy winning album “Viva La Tradicion” was released in 2010. Now in its 14th year, SHO is dedicated to the sounds of the barrio. Their music is characterized by the raw, organic and vintage sound defined by the genre. They are on a mission to keep the musical legacy of salsa dura (hard salsa) alive and to expand its audience to those who love great music, not just Latin music. Grounded in the past while focused on the future, they strive to keep the music relevant while creating a unique and fresh approach. With four albums and as many Grammy nominations, this Latin jazz powerhouse knows it is crucial to continually push themselves and raise the bar. They recently released their fifth album featuring two of America’s great jazz icons, Chick Corea and saxophonist Joe Lovano. Whether a concert hall or an outdoor jazz festival, there is no easing you in—they are coming at you full force from start to finish. Their energy on stage, rich sound and musical precision leave audiences mesmerized until the last note. With an unwavering respect for the music’s rich history, 13 world-class musicians and vocalists come together to create an unparalleled musical experience.

Brubeck Institute Jazz Quartet The members of the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quartet (BIJQ) are in the Institute’s Fellowship Program. Winners of nine DownBeat awards for best undergraduate collegiate jazz group in the country since 2006, the BIJQ have performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, Playboy Jazz Festival, Brubeck Festival, Detroit International Jazz Festival, and others, and have done concerts in California, New York, Washington, Florida, Texas, Chicago, Toronto, Minneapolis, Washington DC, and on a State Department tour in Spain. They have performed in jazz clubs such as Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in New York, Yoshi’s in Oakland, Herb Alpert’s club Vibrato in Los Angeles, Blues Alley in Washington DC, the Dakota in Minneapolis, and the Jamboree Jazz Club in Barcelona. They have also played at the annual conference of the International Association for Jazz Education, at the Jazz Education Network conference and at the United Nations as part of the first Dave Brubeck forum, “Jazz: A Language for Peace.” The BIJQ does clinics and performances in schools throughout the country.

Guest ARTISTS Cyrille Aimée Cyrille Aimée was primarily raised in France and is of French-Dominican parentage. As a curious child in SamoisSur-Seine, she would sneak out of her bedroom window to wander into the nearby gypsy encampments filled with those attending the annual Django Reinhardt Festival. She quickly fell in love with the gypsy music and way of life, and in her later years she would sing on street corners with musician friends while traveling across Europe. In the midst of one such odyssey she found herself at the Montreux Jazz Festival, where she won first prize in the 2007 vocal competition. The success included the financing of her first self-produced album. When Aimée auditioned for the French version of American Idol and became a finalist, she was Informed that she would have to sing only what she was told. Her gypsy spirit rebelled and, in what was a cause célèbre, she walked away from the competition. Soon after, Cyrille moved to the United States and went on to be a finalist in the legendary Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Vocals Competition in 2010, before winning the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition in 2012. Aimée’s talents recently caught the attention of Stephen Sondheim, who cast her in an Encore Special Presentation starring Bernadette Peters at New York City’s City Center in November 2013. In August 2014, The New York Times referred to Aimée’s major label release “It’s a Good Day” as “a bravura turn, presented with a smile.” With “Let’s Get Lost,” her second album for Mack Avenue Records, the bright mademoiselle has blossomed into a full-fledged artist.

Supporting JAZZ: This year marks the 60th anniversary of Brubeck’s Jazz Diplomacy Tour of 1958. The lineup for Brubeck Festival 2018 was carefully selected to reflect the intercontinental and intercultural message of unity and peace that was a beacon of that event. Investment in Pacific Jazz and the Brubeck Institute from supporters and the University alike have produced a high level of success. Every year the Conservatory continues to be better positioned to excel. Rich with culture, diversity and opportunity, University of the Pacific and the Brubeck Institute offer students an unusual opportunity to have intimate experiences with access to the talent and resources that would be found in larger, musically rich cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. As a supporter, you are an integral part of sustaining Dave’s legacy. Your belief in the mission of the Institute, coupled with your personal and corporate generosity, make it possible for us to provide high-quality core programs: the Brubeck Festival, Brubeck Collection, Brubeck Fellowship Program, Summer Jazz Colony and Brubeck Outreach Program.

For more information on how you can support the Institute, please contact Briana Bacon, assistant dean for development, at bbacon@pacific.edu or 209.946.7441.

Dave Brubeck: Jazz Ambassador

2

As the Cold War began brewing between the United States and the Soviet Union in the 1950s, the U.S. State Department dispatched America’s greatest jazz musicians to export American culture to Third World countries – especially those closest to the Iron Curtain. Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington led the charge. Dave Brubeck and his quartet were asked to tour Poland, Turkey, India, Ceylon, East Pakistan, West Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq over two months in the spring of 1958. The Dave Brubeck Quartet not only brought their unique style to these countries, they also participated in a cultural exchange where they listened and learned from the local music and people they met. All six tunes on "Jazz Impressions of Eurasia" echoed the sounds and sights from their 1958 host countries. The immensely successful 1959 album "Time Out" featured “Blue Rondo à la Turk,” which was inspired by the rhythms Dave heard on the streets of Turkey. Dave and Iola Brubeck’s 1962 collaboration with Louis Armstrong’s "The Real Ambassadors" not only focused the ideals of the 1958 tour but also addressed civil rights issues in the United States.

University of the Pacific Library’s Holt-Atherton Special Collections curates the archival collections of the Brubecks and their associates such as Paul Desmond. Online exhibits and searchable inventories can be found at go.Pacific.edu/Archives.

1

Joe Morello’s name was mistakenly left off this concert program from Iran in 1958. Although Paul Desmond was mentioned, he did not play in Iran or Iraq.

2

Joe Morello, Eugene Wright, Dave Brubeck, and Paul Desmond played thirteen shows in three weeks in India and Ceylon in 1958. This photograph comes from the Paul Desmond Papers, containing letters and diaries from the legendary saxophonist.

3

After spending two weeks traveling and performing throughout Poland, Dave wrote the Chopinesque “Dziekuje” ("Thank You"in Polish) for the show on March 18, 1958. The performance was recorded and is available for research.

4

Dave, Matthew, Michael, Catherine, Chris, Iola, Darius and Danny Brubeck gather in their Wilton, Connecticut home in the late 1960s. Iola, Darius and Michael joined Dave for the Western European, Poland, and Turkey portions of the 1958 tour.

5

All of the tunes on "Jazz Impressions of Eurasia" were representations of the places that the Quartet visited in 1958. This bass part to “Golden Horn” initially had the working title of “Turkey” due to the rhythms that Dave heard in that country.

6

The Quar tet agreed to play an additional show in Poland on what was scheduled by the U.S. State Department as a “free day.” Announced only two days before the show, the 3,000 seat venue sold out in half a day.
