Hello lovely readers,

Letter from the Editor

I am delighted to say that since our last issue, I have given birth to another beautiful daughter. Faye Melody Thompson was born on the 9th August at 7.14pm weighing 8lb 4.5oz. She has a mop of jet black hair and is perfectly beautiful just like her two older sisters. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Liverpool Women’s Hospital for their fantastic support throughout the 9 months and especially to Amanda my midwife who has been amazing. During the ‘pushing’ part of labour, Faye’s heart rate began to dip which resulted in having an emergency c-section. It’s been a slower recovery as you will know or can imagine, so it has been a challenge getting this issue out. But friends and family have made it possible!

The Mummy and Me team are really excited and looking forward to the Baby & Toddler show taking place at Event City at the end of this month. It has been a pleasure and a delight to work in partnership with Mercury Events. They have worked hard to make this show fantastic with lots of great show deals for parents-to-be through to great fun activities for toddlers. If you are planning to attend, be sure to use code BTM35 for your Mummy and Me discount and we look forward to seeing you there! I really hope that you enjoy this issue, we have featured some useful information about ‘What to expect after expecting’, have a great recipe for toddlers from Annabel Karmel, some great advice for Daddy readers about Playgroups from Commando Dad and an interview with top children’s author Nick Butterworth on his latest venture and Cbeebies success ‘Q Pootle 5’. Thanks again for picking up or downloading this copy…enjoy!

Pregnancy

What to Expect after Expecting... R ae, one of our consultant Midwives gives great information and advice on ‘What to expect after expecting’...

So your baby is finally here but what happens next? Midwives perform an assessment of Mum each time we visit so here is what’s normal and what’s to worry about.

All mums will lose some blood after their baby is born this is normal and called Lochia. It is like having a heavy period for around four weeks. Lochia should be like your period in most ways other than the initial heaviness and length of time. You should contact your GP if you have clots in the blood or if it has a foul smell.

Going to the loo after having a baby can seem like a scary task at first but most mums find that they go naturally and it is comfortable. It is important that you do your pelvic floor exercises to maintain good bladder and bowel function. If you find you have difficulty controlling going to the toilet speak to your midwife or GP who can offer support and referral for physiotherapy.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER EXPECTING

How are you? One of the most simple yet extremely important questions you will be asked. Postnatal depression affects approximately 1 in 10 women. Most Mums will have a bout of baby blues a few days after their baby is born as their hormones settle and they adjust to their new baby. This usually resolves as swiftly as it appears. If this is not the case then speak with your midwife or GP as you may need some additional support.

It is possible you may have a tear or cut (episiotomy) if you have a vaginal birth. Maintaining good hygiene is of great importance. Change your sanitary pad regularly and wash your hands before you do so. Your midwife will offer to check your wound to make sure it is healing and there is no sign of infection, any stitches will be dissolvable and will not need removing. If you have had a caesarean section your midwife will care for this wound too including removing any stitches/staples where necessary.

Some mums will still have swollen ankles immediately after birth and this normally settles down pretty quickly. However if you notice any abnormal swelling in one leg, soreness, redness, bruising or heat then seek medical advice as these are signs of a blood clot. Pay particular attention to this post caesarean section and try to wear your hospital tights for as long as you can.

baby bath. Supporting them with this arm, use your other to begin washing your baby. When you are washing a newborn, it is advisable to use cotton wool pads/balls to wash their face and body. This is a softer alternative to a sponge.

Bathing your newborn baby can seem very daunting at first, but most newborn babies actually enjoy the experience as they are used to the amniotic fluid in the womb and therefore find comfort in the warm water. It can therefore be a wonderful bonding experience for you and your baby too.

When washing your baby’s hair/head, gently use your hand to pour water over and massage their head. Wash your baby’s nappy area last and wash front to back. Once your baby is clean, allow them some time to lie in the water, gently pouring water over their tummy to keep them warm. This will allow your baby to relax and enjoy.

Before you begin bathing your baby, it is a good idea to make sure you have everything you need at hand. Including a towel, fresh nappy and clean clothing. Then you can prepare the bath water. For a young baby it is advisable not to fill the baby bath and to instead start with just a few inches of warm water. The ideal temperature is 37degrees. Make sure the warmth is evenly spread throughout the bath. Test the temperature with the inside of your wrist before placing your baby into the water. Using one arm, gently support your baby’s back, neck and head as you place them into the

Once you have bathed your baby, carefully lift your baby out and pat them dry, making sure that you pay particular attention to the folds in their skin. This is also a wonderful time to talk to your baby and use some oil or cream to massage them (which can also help create a good bedtime routine). There are many helpful websites and the NHS offer further advice about bathing your baby along with a ‘How to’ video. Visit www.nhs.uk and search ‘washing and bathing your baby’.

The JOHNSON’S® Baby brand is launching the new F I RS T T OUCH™ range which is the first collection to be completely soap, fragrance and colour free and includes everything new mums need to cleanse and protect their baby’s delicate skin from top to toe. The new range includes a wash, shampoo, wipes, barrier cream, oil and moisturiser. Available in stores now!

“My son has suffered with eczema since he was born and although the hydrocortisone cleared his flare ups, I was always concerned with the prescribed creams and putting them onto my son’s skin. After hearing about Bioskin and the natural ingredients I was keen to try them. The Daily Nourishing Spray is a non greasy, easily absorbed spray which leaves the skin instantly soft and moisturised and the aromatic notes are a delight. Since using this product my son’s skin has become smoother and his outbreaks are minimal. Our bedtime routine now consists of a 'Bioskin Junior Bath Milk', (which is the best eczema bath product that I have tried and the smell has the bathroom fragrant), followed by our 'Daily Nourishing Spray, which results in one happy 'itch free' boy!” (Gill Pryce)

Your baby’s eyesight - WHAT TO EXPECT

F

rom those adorable first blinks after delivery, your baby’s eyesight undergoes a rapid development. At birth, your baby sees only black and white, with some shades of grey, and as time goes by their colour vision will develop. There are many products on the market from books to sensory toys that offer bold black and white patterns for exactly this reason! You may notice that your baby’s eyes occasionally roll and sometimes away from each other. This is absolutely normal, however if you have any concerns or they begin to squint a lot then you should discuss this with your Health Visitor, Midwife or GP. If necessary they can then refer you to an Orthoptist or Ophthalmologist (specialists in

A common problem is a condition called Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). This is a condition associated with the excessive oxygen during early weeks of a premature baby’s life. A full term baby has oxygen carefully regulated by the placenta helping to develop the retina (light sensitive lining of the eye). When a baby is born prematurely, it is hard to regulate the level of oxygen they receive. Babies born at less than 32 weeks gestation are most at risk. You can find more information at

At birth, babies may not be able to focus their vision. Again, this is a skill that they develop as time progresses over the first few months of their life. At around 2 weeks of age you should be able to notice your baby following your face or an object held around 20cm (8inches) away from their eyes. So get up close and personal with your baby! Again, if you have any concerns about their focus you should address this with your Health Carer. It is important that any problems with your child’s eyesight are addressed as soon as possible as they can affect other areas of their development. When your baby is around 3 weeks of age they may have begun to recognise your face, but this will still be at around the same distance. They may be able to hold their gaze and focus in on you. This is a wonderful time to spend talking to your baby about anything and everything!

Birth & Beyond

If your child is diagnosed as having a sight problem, there are plenty of things that can be done to aid their development in other areas. Sensory play and experiences are great and definitely worth investigating. Even basic services such as sensory rooms which are available in most children’s centres. Another thing to consider, is to get in touch with groups that support those with sight problems.

The Royal National Institute for Blind People operates a helpline open from Monday to Friday 8.45am to 5.30pm on 0303 123 9999. Their website also offers lots of support and provides hope that children with sight problems can still live a normal life - “most blind and partially sighted children are educated in mainstream schools, or in special schools that do not specialise in vision impairment”

Both John and I have made great progress and I’ve watched even the most reluctant of little people and their nervous parents become happy and confident in the water.

Birth & Beyond WILSON K PHOTOGRAPHY

Precious Pictures to Treasure Forever... N estled 3 miles outside Liverpool City Centre is the beautiful studio of Wilson K Photography. The studio was opened in August 2012 through the passion and hard work of Kellie Wilson. A Mum of two herself, Kellie offers a ‘no hard sell’ approach, understanding that capturing the beauty of your children is something personal and often emotional for parents that shouldn’t be exploited. From your first contact with Kellie, she is extremely open about how she works and the costs involved.

The Wilson K website features a comprehensive price list and outlines that there is a minimum spend of £200 due in full on the day of the shoot, which is then available to spend on a wide range of products after viewing your images. There is no pressured ‘on the spot’ sale. Instead, knowing how busy parents can be, images are uploaded to an online gallery to allow parents to browse in their own time and in the comfort of their own home. “No hidden costs, no pressure sales just upfront, honest pricing”

Living her dream, Kellie takes time and pleasure with each photoshoot with one session a day. This allows plenty of time to feed or change your baby as and when they need, and to relax and enjoy your time at the studio. The studio is a beautiful space and always one for attention to

detail, Kellie has refreshments on hand to keep (often sleep-deprived) parents well fuelled and looked after - you deserve a treat too! The ideal time to capture your newborn is between 8 and 10 days, it is therefore advisable to book your session during your pregnancy (Kellie also does beautiful bump shoots too!). Kellie will schedule your session around your due date, but as babies choose to come when they decide, Kellie alternates sessions accordingly to accommodate each baby when they arrive. All you need to take to the session is a warm blanket (to wrap your baby in between shots – the studio is a nice temperature so your baby feels totally relaxed and warm when images are being taken). You will also need plenty of feeds if you are not breastfeeding and your fee.

Breastfeeding - What toExpect... T

BREASTFEEDING - WHAT TO EXPECT

here are many changes that take place during pregnancy, one of which is that your breasts prepare for their role in making milk. From about 20 weeks into your pregnancy, your breasts will produce a rich mixture of proteins, vitamins and substances for fighting infections, this is called colostrum. This is usually a yellow/golden colour. After birth, your baby feeding will send signals to your breasts to produce milk. At around 3-4 days, the colostrum changes into a whitish milk. This milk is more creamy (higher in fat) and more satisfying for your baby. The more your baby feeds, the more milk you will produce. Once they have finished feeding on one breast, offer the other.

Your baby’s instinct is to breastfeed, this instinct is particularly strong after birth, therefore it may help if you spend time cuddling your baby on your chest with your skin against theirs. Skin-to-skin can be done after a Caesarean section as well as a vaginal birth. But if you are unable to have skin-toskin with your baby post-birth, you can do this at a later stage. Don’t expect breastfeeding to happen straight away, some babies don’t (perhaps due to sleepiness affected by the pain relief drugs used in labour). A midwife should be on-hand to assist you should you want help.

Once out of hospital, many women do not feel comfortable feeding in public places. Some department stores such as John Lewis, offer ‘feeding rooms’ that offer a relaxed and more If feeding is comfortable private environment for breastfeeding Mums If you feed for just and your baby is content to be able to feed. 1 day the antibodies after feeds, they are likely in your colostrum will to be feeding correctly Meeting other breastfeeding Mums can help provide natural immunity and getting enough from infection and will help too. Early Years Fawcett, Marketing Director at Zizzi comments, “Our ‘design your dish’ options combined with the Crayola partnership encourage kids to get creative throughout the meal by colouring-in and completing fun activities on the menu with the new Crayola Twistables. We hope both parents and little ones alike enjoy our new menu and get artistic and inventive.”

Kids, food and a license to get creative are the order of the day with the launch of Zizzi’s new Bambini menu. Aimed at little tummies, Zizzi is throwing the rule book out of the window and encouraging children to play with their food with a menu that inspires creativity.

“My husband and I were really impressed with how child friendly Zizzi restaurants are. We recently visited both Liverpool One and Trafford Centre restaurants. With 3 children aged 3 and under, eating out can be challenging. But the staff were very helpful and the fun and creative menu meant my 3 year old enjoyed making her own pizza, and decorating her own ice creams. A highly enjoyable experience on both occasions, with fabulous food. We will certainly be visiting again and would recommend Zizzi restaurants to any family looking to eat out.” Michelle Thompson, (Magazine Founder & Director).

Created by Zizzi head chef Angelo Garofalo, the Bambini menu brings together a selection of delicious Italian dishes in portions perfect for kiddies. Highlights include: Make Your Own Pizza - the Zizzi selection pot allows little ones to create their own design with Italian pizza toppings A healthy option – to start, carrots, cucumber & dough sticks Zizzi Bambini Cones – a sweet treat, again with the option to decorate their dessert

These delightful dishes are served alongside a range of goodies to keep them entertained including activities sheets, stickers, chef hats and Crayola Twistables to inspire little ones to get arty at the table. What’s more, each month there will be a national colouring-in competition in each restaurant where kids can win a free meal for their family as well as a Crayola goodie bag. An interview with... Nick Butterworth...

QPOOTLE 5 - NICK BUTTERWORTH

Where did the initial inspiration come from to write children’s books?

In 1980, I decided to concentrate on illustration rather than graphic design. Being a new dad helped me to become reacquainted with children’s books and I wondered if there might be an opportunity there for me. It soon became clear that if you want to control what you illustrate, you have to come up with the stories, too! I very quickly took to this new role as writer and illustrator and have been enjoying it for more than thirty years. It’s much better than doing a proper job! Did your children have any influence on your characters and their stories? I don’t think Ben or my daughter Amanda influenced my work directly. But by just being the children they were, lively, full of questions, full of fun, they kept me inspired. I used to make up stories for them, in which they were the heroes. They liked those and would contribute ideas as we went along. I think the only one of those ‘make up’ stories that made it into print, was Amanda’s Butterfly. (And in Q Pootle 5, it was Amanda’s idea that he should fix his new rocket booster onto his spaceship with Sellotape. But then she was eighteen at the time!) Having said that, Ben, as an adult and now business partner, has contributed enormously to the development of characters and stories for the Q Pootle 5 animated series. You have written many successful books with

34 |

characters we have all fallen in love with from Percy The Park Keeper and Tiger through to the Q Pootle 5 series now animated for CBeebies. Who is your favourite character and why? Impossible! You might as well ask a mum which one of her children is her favourite! I have to say that, working closely with Q Pootle 5 for the last six years, I have grown in my admiration for the little chap. He’s not a super-hero kind of leader, but his friends look up to him because he’s always there for them. He can get things wrong but he’s kind and fun and he takes responsibility without expecting a big pat on the back for it. Percy the Park Keeper is very similar.

I do have a great soft spot for old Percy, because he so reminds me of my grandpa. These days people say they think Percy is like me! Well, as I’m now a grandpa myself, I’ll take that as a great compliment. Your career to date has been quite diverse from illustration and writing a regular children’s feature for the Sunday Express, to speaking at schools and book festivals, and most recently forming ‘Snapper Productions’ with your wife and son enabling the creation of animation of Q Pootle 5. What area of work do you like best? It’s hard to say what I like most. I love writing – creating something out of nothing. I love illustration too, especially the initial drawing when you first discover what a character looks like. These are solitary occupations and working alone is not my favourite aspect of book work. I have really enjoyed working with my wife and son and all the other very talented people who have been involved in the animation process – actors, writers, sound engineers, musicians and of course a great team of animators.

Early Years

As a Father, has it ever been challenging to have a good work and family balance?

What would you say is your greatest achievement to date? I feel a bit like Spike Milligan when he was asked the same question. He said his greatest achievement was that he had reached the age of seventy (or was it eighty?) and was still friends with his children. I’m friends with my children and my wife – and together, we have an unusually large number of longstanding friendships. However, you may have spotted the weakness in this answer. I can’t really claim this as my achievement! It’s more down to the patience and tolerance of the aforementioned! On the work front, I think perhaps The Whisperer is my best book to date. I’m also quite pleased that this ‘old dog’ has been able to learn quite a few new tricks, during the production of the Q Pootle 5 animated series. What advice would you give any of our readers (big or small) who may be considering following in your footsteps and writing children’s books? To grown ups, I would say, it’s not easy to get a toehold these days. You have to really want it and not be put off by inevitable disappointments and rejection.

To children, I would only say, don’t worry about making a living at it. Just keep on making up those stories. Keep on producing all those hundreds of pictures. Enjoy it. It’s a fair bet that those who do end up making a living from writing or illustration will be those who did exactly that. What’s next for Nick Butterworth? I’d like to spend a bit more time pottering in the shed! But I suspect Q Pootle 5 will have a say about that. He’s bound to want to go on more adventures. And then there are other new and exciting projects (both for children and adults) that Snapper Productions is developing, although I can’t give you any more details for the time being. Still, I might sneak out to the shed once in a while . . . Mummy and Me readers would like to know more about the new range of Q Pootle 5 products, including two new books, that will launch later this year. Can you tell us more?

QPOOTLE 5 - NICK BUTTERWORTH

Not as a father, particularly. Being able to work from home has meant that I have been lucky enough to be around as my children were growing up. Sometimes, being under the cosh with a deadline meant working unsociable hours. But I rarely missed the chance to read them a bedtime story (or three). Those times were, and still are, very precious.

It takes both inspiration and perspiration!

Since Q Pootle 5 launched on CBeebies last year parents and children have been asking when Q Pootle 5 products will be released. I’m delighted to say that the first wave of products will be available this autumn. There are games and puzzles out now and on 6 October there will be a DVD featuring thirteen of the series episodes. There’s also going to be a fantastic new double length Christmas episode coming out on DVD too! On top of this two Q Pootle 5 picture books that will be on sale in November and Q Pootle will launch its very own magazine that month too. Credit: Q Pootle 5: The Great Space Race and other Adventures! is available to pre-order now on Amazon. The Christmas special and Q Pootle 5 themed puzzles, games, books and magazines will be available to buy from November.

Introducing Russell, the dream sheepdog, who is taking the baton from Ewan, as he em’barks’ on a mission to be the ultimate bedtime companion for toddlers. Cute, cuddly and comforting, Russell will take over from Ewan when the little ones reach 18 months, and support sleep time struggles for as long as they need. Russell helps toddlers sleep with his softly changing warm glow, which gently lights up the room with a calming ‘colour therapy’ display. One thing is for certain, Russell is set to prove dogs really are man’s best friend as he offers companionship with his enchanting green and blue ‘light show’ to lull them to sleep in no time. What’s even better is Russell has a voice recorder, so parents, or even grandparents, friends or aunties, can record themselves talking, singing or reading a favourite bedtime story to enjoy for as long as little one needs. The voice recording function can also provide a way to alleviate separation anxiety. If a little one is staying away for a weekend, they can still listen to mum and dad’s voice before bedtime, which is sure to help them settle. Following the phenomenal success of his older sibling, SweetDreamers is thrilled to unleash Russell, the dog toddlers have been dreaming of. Commenting on launch of Russell, Lynda Harding, founder of SweetDreamers said: “I am just over the moon that our little Russell is finally ready to rescue sleepless toddlers. The success of ewan has been truly overwhelming, but

now he has worked his magic for babies across the world, we are looking forward to sending Russell out to bring the same comfort to toddlers. Bedtimes are a common battle that parents face and like ewan, Russell provides a bedtime buddy that offers comfort. The voice recorder will let tots feel like mum and dad are still in the room and make them feel safe and secure, ensuring the whole family gets the sleep they need.” For ages 18 months + RRP: £34.99 Stockist: www.sweetdreamers.co.uk Boots & John Lewis

The 60th Ride at Disneyland Paris...

T

he culinary world of the Disney•Pixar film Ratatouille comes to life in Ratatouille L’Aventure Totalement Toquée De Rémy (Ratatouille – The Adventure), a first-of-itskind Disney attraction that uses trackless ride vehicles matched to an enormous 3D projection system featuring original animation from Pixar Animation Studios. Guests shrink down to the size of a rat and join Rémy, the “little chef” from the film for a crazy culinary adventure that sends them scurrying through the kitchen, dining room, and walls of Gusteau’s famous Paris restaurant.

Synopsis

The adventure begins when guests come on board a “ratmobile”, a vehicle that looks like a cute version of our furry friends from the film. Soon the ratmobiles are on a Paris rooftop where they encounter Rémy and the ghost of chef Gusteau as they discuss the special meal Rémy wants to prepare in guests’ honor. Moments later, Rémy’s excitement leads to him and the ratmobiles plummeting down to the kitchen floor of Gusteau’s restaurant. Being

rats in a human world is fraught with danger, so Rémy and his new friends in the ratmobiles quickly move out of sight before Chef Skinner spots them. Rémy leads the way as all of the rats move from one hiding place to another. Luckily, Rémy’s human pal Linguini is there to help.

Ride in the “Ratmobile”

Welcome to the ratmobile! Specially designed by our Imagineers, this amazing car comes in five colours and holds six passengers – great for the whole family. The ratmobiles travel in groups of three, but none follows the same route. They move using a technology that requires no rails. Now guests can really experience what it’s like to be a little creature in a human-sized world as they dart quickly from hiding place to hiding place during this zany culinary adventure. Book by 30 September 2014 a 2-, 3- or 4night package and get up to 2 more nights AND 2 more days. For full details, terms and conditions visit

Daddy & Me

COMMANDO DAD ON PLAYGROUPS

L

Brief: Playgroups are fantastic for your troopers – and you. Don’t be put off if you’re the only dad there: any initial discomfort will be outweighed by the benefits.

ast weekend I went to speak to a group of dads at a fantastic group called ‘Dads 4 Dads’ in Burton-on-Trent. I wanted to find out what experiences were daunting for new dads, and unsurprisingly, playgroups where they were in the minority ranked quite highly.

It bought back to me how uncomfortable I had been the first few times I went to playgroup. I felt that I was being silently critiqued by all the other mums (I only saw other dads very occasionally), who seemed so much more competent than me at, well, everything. I was all fingers and thumbs. I managed to get even more clumsy under what I TOP TIP perceived to be their NUMBER 1 watchful gaze. I Expect to feel a bit realised – and not uncomfortable the first few without a twinge times you go – it is a new of surprise – that I environment for you, and your was nervous. troopers. Remember that troopers take their lead from you though, Luckily, neither of so try not to show how my sons shared my uncomfortable you are. reservations. They Smile. And because I didn’t want to stop them being in such a TOP TIP stimulating and fun NUMBER 2 environment, I Although it is great to let decided to brave off steam occasionally, don’t it out, resigning fall into the trap of constantly myself to the bemoaning how difficult it is to be fact that it was a parent. You know how difficult it never going is. Use the play group to find and to be a cosy share excellent and effective experience. strategies that will make the

experience enjoyable and rewarding.

How wrong I was. After a few weeks I began to be referred to as ‘Sam and Jude’s dad’, and within a few months, Neil. I went from nodding and smiling at other mums to actually chatting. I found that the very same people I thought were judgmental and standoffish were actually a mine of information on everything from nappy rash to good local nurseries. Well, perhaps some of them remained judgemental and standoffish, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time. I built a rapport with parents that went regularly and gradually became accepted as one of the gang. If anyone reading this ever went to the 1 o’clock club in Geraldine Mary Harmsworth Park in Lambeth, they can attest to what a happy gang that was. I would happily advise any dad to give playgroups a go. You will be able to get out of base camp and socialise with other parents, and – very importantly – build a support network. It’s great for your troopers too: they will be able to have fun with new playmates and new toys (and if your troopers have a favourite toy, make a note of it in case you need inspiration for Christmas or birthdays) in a great environment. The most important thing to remember is that you don’t need to feel nervous if you are the only man at a playgroup. You have the most important thing in the world in common with the other people there: you are all parents. If you have any thoughts about playgroups, please share them with me – and other dads – on the Commando Dad forum. You can also follow me on Twitter @commandodad
