Pregnancy

Let sleeping babies lie

D

erbyshire-based business woman Georgina Humphrey knows a thing or two about newborn babies.

As a professional newborn photographer, working full time from her homely studio in the Hope Valley area of the Peak District, she has had literally hundreds of new babies come through her door. Most are usually no older than three weeks old. She says, “Newborns spend a lot of their time asleep! It’s how I can get those gorgeous curled up sleeping baby photos that parents love.” Georgina has developed a burgeoning reputation for her heart-warming baby portraits. Her aptly named business ‘Bundles of Joy Photography’ is achieving great things; multiple industry awards and growing acclaim from not just parents and their families, but also from her peers and the media. BundlesOfJoy_June15 15:37newborn Page 1 In recent months 29/6/15 Georgina’s

portraits have been prominently featured on the UK’s number one parenting website Mother & Baby. It is publicity like this that is helping to keep the enquiries flooding in. Her client base is growing year on year. Her work is even attracting the attention of celebrity clients who are travelling from London and beyond, specifically having chosen her because of her unique photography style and personal approach. Georgina said, “Many new parents are now choosing to celebrate the birth of their child with professional portraits, taken in those first few weeks. They realise that they just have this one chance before the baby quickly changes and grows. I’m honoured to be able to do what I love; to help them get the beautiful portraits they desire.” For more information visit www.bundlesofjoybygeorgina.co.uk or call 07973 939522.

Nutrients matter While you are pregnant and breastfeeding, you need to take additional vitamins and nutrients to help nourish your baby, support brain and physical development and contribute to health in later life.1 A third of mums report that they don’t take supplements because they have made them feel ill in the past.2

A simple and tasty alternative nutrimum’s delicious range of cereal bars are specifically designed for pregnant and breastfeeding mums. They are fortified with the vitamins and minerals mums need when pregnant and while breastfeeding but with no compromise on taste. So, whether you are struggling with nausea during pregnancy or grabbing a snack on the go whilst breastfeeding, nutrimum is your convenient go-to solution to meeting some of mum and baby’s specific nutritional needs.

THE POWER OF MATERNAL NUTRITION “Eating well and incorporating specific nutrients during pregnancy and breastfeeding, especially during the 1000 days from conception to toddlerhood, will positively influence the future health of your baby.” LUCY JONES, CONSULTANT DIETITIAN AND NUTRITIONIST

Signs that Labour is on the way...

A

s pregnancy draws to a close, the cervix will begin to soften in preparation for your forthcoming labour and birth. You may also notice various physical signs that labour is starting. It’s important to remember that not every woman experiences the same signs, and that certain signs occur before or during labour varying from woman to woman. Towards the end of your pregnancy, you may begin to feel the sensation that there is pressure building and/or cramps in your pelvic/rectal area. The cramping will feel similar to those you experience when having your monthly menstrual. The position of the baby may also cause lower back pain too. It is not uncommon to notice and increase in acid refux (heartburn). At this stage, there is no need to go to the hospital. If you have appointments with your midwife it may be wise to mention your symptoms to them. Ensure that you get plenty of rest ahead of your body going through labour. Some women experience quick labours whilst others have longer labours, so get plenty of relaxation in the run up to your due date. The period before labour begins can last a matter of hours or even days, particularly if this is your first labour. Look after yourself; eat well and enjoy warm baths. The most common symptom of approaching labour is an increase in the strength and frequency of Braxton Hicks contractions. These are practice contractions which may occur a few times an hour helping to soften the cervix. Aside from the discomfort, one of the main ways to distinguish BH contractions from the real thing is that BH contractions are irregular and fade away. Labour pains occur at regular intervals and gradually become stronger.

Pregnancy

Close to your due date, your midwife will check for engagement of your baby’s head. This is the dropping down of their head into your pelvis and may not occur until the start of labour but can equally happen a few weeks prior to labour starting. You may notice that you have left discomfort in your ribs but an increasing pressure in your pelvic or vaginal area causing you to ‘waddle as you walk’ and perhaps pass urine more frequently. Ensure that you have packed your hospital bag and you may be ‘nesting’ preparing your home for your new addition. If you have any concerns, make sure you consult with your midwife and try not to worry.

Birth & Beyond

ASKthe

Exper t

Each issue we will be putting YOUR questions to our panel of experts.

This issue, Child Psychologist Aleisha Khan provides tips and advice on how to embark on Potty Training your toddler.

T

he important thing to remember when starting potty training is that children get bladder and bowel control when they are physically ready for it. Every child is different and what works for one child might not necessarily work for another.

may surprise you. It usually takes a little longer to learn to stay dry through the night, so even if your child is becomes dry in the day it may take some time for this to happen at night time too. Most children learn to stay dry through the night between the ages of three and five. But do expect the occasional wetting of the bed.

What is the best age to begin thinking about potty training my toddler?

Most children can control their bowels before their bladders. So a sign that they are on the path to potty training is having wet not soiled nappies through the night. Some children are dry by the age of two, however this is still quite early. By the age of three most children are dry (with the occasionally accident when excited, distressed or too absorbed in an activity). Don’t expect things to happen straight away! Take things slowly and your child

Parents tend to consider potty training between 18 and 24 months. It is advisable to start potty training when you have a time to dedicate to this with no disruptions i.e. school holidays or annual leave. As this is a whole new learning curve for your child it is also advisable not to make any other changes to their routine at this time. Summer is a good time to start as wet clothes and bedding can be dried on the line and activities can take place outdoors where mess can be dealt with more easily. If you are planning to start during the colder months, try to plan indoor activities were your child will be warm if accidents happen and you can avoid them any discomfort and cold journeys if they have wet or soiled.

YOUR SAY? ASK THE EXPERT... Send your questions to:

asktheexpert @mummyandmemagazine.co.uk All questions sent to our panel will be published anonymously and any personal information will be treated confidentially. *Always speak to your own midwife or GP for any urgent concerns.

Birth & Beyond How do I know when my child is ready to be potty trained? Signs that your child is ready to potty train: - When they are aware that they have a wet or dirty nappy. - You can tell when they are urinating or pooing through squatting or ‘face pulling’. - They understand when they are passing urine or needing a poo by telling you. - There is at least an hour gap between wetting or soiling. (Potty training may fail if this is more frequent). A child displaying these signs will probably take to potty training much quicker. Be prepared for lots of accidents whilst your child is learning. Don’t make using the potty a battle. If your child is continually wetting themselves they may not have been ready to potty train therefore meaning you can go back to nappies or can keep going (and hear the constant cycling of your washing machine). Make the potty something exciting and interesting. Don’t leave it until potty training for to introduce it. Try leaving the potty around where your child can see it and

get to know what it is. You could perhaps keep it in your bathroom and explain to your child what you are doing when you are using the toilet. Often children become drier if they see an older peer, sibling or adult going to the toilet. We have all seen children mimicking actions and this is just the same! If you have got to know your child’s toilet habits i.e. what time of day they open their bowels, then you can try to pre-empt this by taking their nappy off and encouraging them to try their potty. If your child becomes distressed, don’t force things, simply put their nappy back on and try again another time. Be prepared for the accidents and act calmly upon them. If you make a fuss or shout at the child then they feel anxious and worried when next time and will be less likely to succeed in their potty training. In the end, your child will want to be dry for their own sake. So take a deep breath and be patient!

Early Years

& Babies

Words: Amy Goodman Managing Director

I

’m 33 and have 4 amazing children. Daniel 10yrs, Joshua 7 years, Leo 5yrs and Isla 3yrs.

Flosselle was set up in May 2014. I have always has a passion for children’s clothing. When my daughter was born I was excited to be able to shop the girls section. But then felt very deflated with the choice in the shops. I am very close to my Nan Alwyn and at 79 years old and a seamstress all her life she can still predict the latest fashion trends and has a big impact on Flosselle’s designs. She decided to sew a dress for Isla which was not to my taste so I decided to dust off my sewing machine and make Isla a dress. It was a big hit and then I continued to sew clothing for Isla. As a child photographer I took some photos of Isla in my dresses and posted them on facebook. Very quickly I had lots of people asking me if they could have a dress the same.

helping out with the dinners and housework! Flosselle has now evolved and changed. Rather than me sewing each piece I have a manufacturer to make my designs. Also before customers had a lot of choice and had to wait up to 4 weeks for their order now every item is ready made so is dispatched within 24hours. We also now stock our clothing on notonthehighstreet.com and we also stock a boutique ‘Alana’s Baby Corner’ in Hay On Wye. Our Christmas Dress sets are being released very soon and designs are already in place for Spring/Summer and Autumn/ Winter 2016. For more information visit:

www.flosselle.co.uk

I then decided to set up Flosselle. Our vision is to bring stunning fabrics to new designs concepts. To fill your child with joy and happiness. To create clothing that attracts and puts a smile on your face and ultimately to give your little girl sparkling memories filled with laughter. Very quickly I was inundated with orders and had to close my order books. This kept happening, so I entered a competition in association with Annabel Karmel, Prima Baby and Pregnancy Magazine, Made For Mums website and Amazon. I was an incredible shocked when I got the call to say I had been crowned Britain’s Ultimate Mumpreneur. As a very busy mum I often get up early and work before the children wake up and stay up and work late into the evening. It is very time consuming but I love it and I also have an excellent husband who despite working long hours himself is great at

Alder Hey in the Park

O

riginally established as a US army hospital during the First World War, Alder Hey has been a significant part of life on Merseyside for over a hundred years. Recognised around the world as a first class, pioneering children’s hospital ten years ago it was felt that it was time to create a new Alder Hey fit for the 21st century. With a £237 million building programme in Springfield Park ending in September 2015 finally a new hospital described by its chief executive as a hospital that ‘takes the NHS to a new level’ opened its doors to patients and parents who had watched it’s amazing development. Whilst the expectations of professional health care and devotion from staff will

22 |

still be at the highest exacting levels of the old hospital the facilities will be very much different. With 75% of the beds in single, en-suite rooms with parent beds, access to play areas and use of natural light and scenic views will be new features of this state of the art children’s hospital. Mummy and Me welcome the new facility for children across Merseyside and England and offer our congratulations and continued support as the hospital transforms, develops and grow. If this incredible hospital can provide another hundred years of service, our children’s health and well-being will be in secure hands. Looking forward to viewing Alder Hey in the park in the near future.

Peel and deseed the squash and cut into 3cm chunks. Steam for 10-15 minutes, until tender. Cool slightly and purée until smooth. Set aside. Melt the butter in a large saucepan and sauté the onion for 5-6 minutes, until soft. Add the garlic and rice and cook, stirring for a further 2-3 minutes, until the rice is translucent around the edges. Add 300ml of the hot stock and bring to a simmer,

stirring frequently, for 8-10 minutes, or until the stock has been absorbed. Add a further 300ml of the hot stock and cook, stirring frequently, for another 8-10 minutes, until the rice is almost tender (if you bite into a grain it will be slightly chalky in the centre) and the stock has been absorbed. If the rice is still very undercooked, add 100ml more of the stock and continue to cook, as above for a further 3-4 minutes. Add the squash purée and 100ml of hot stock and cook for 2-3 minutes, until thick. Stir in enough of the remaining stock to give a loose, but not runny consistency then remove from the heat and stir in the marscapone., Parmesan and lemon juice. Season to taste with salt and pepper and serve in bowls (or hollowed out mini pumkins or squashes) wth extra grated Parmesan and sprinkled with chopped parsley, if using) MAKES 4-6 PORT IONS PREP: 15 MINS COOKING: 30 MI NS

DAD’S ROLE IN PREGNANCY & CHILDBIRTH

T

ime was that a dad’s role in pregnancy in childbirth involved getting a labouring mum to the hospital on time. My own dad was no exception – he actually dropped my mum off outside the hospital when she was in labour with me and twin brother Mark – and told her he would see her during visiting time the next day. I think both of my parents would actually have died from embarrassment if anyone had suggested my dad attend the birth. Well, it was 1970. But now, a dad’s role has changed. Certainly, in my case, I wanted to involved from the second I found out I was going to be a dad. At the time, we were living in New York, and my wife went to the hospital because one morning she woke with an all over rash and her hair started to fall out. We sat in the Emergency Room for hours before I left my wife to go and get some food. The minute I left the ward the doctor drew the curtains around my wife’s bed and told her that she was pregnant. They had been waiting until I had left before they told me, just in case she didn’t want me to know. They needn’t have worried. They had paged me to come back before I even got off the ward. The minute I found out I was going to be a dad, I feel an overwhelming sense of excitement, responsibility to my wife and my unborn baby, and fear. I don’t’ use the word ‘fear’ lightly. As a commando I had experienced truly frightening situations. I soon realised that the fear I felt was not about being a dad – that was now inevitable – but the unknown. A lot of dads I speak to are no different. They want to get actively involved from the start too, attending appointments, scans, childbirth classes – and labour. But the information they need is not always available to them, as much of the literature available is still written exclusively for mums. Dads have told me that what is available can sometimes be patronising (“You’re going to be a parent too!”) or assumes that they are not actively

interested in getting involved (“You can forget your nights down the pub with your mates now!”). It’s not 1970 anymore. I have tried to redress the balance in a book I’ve written for dads-to-be called Commando Dad: Raw Recruits. It is a manual that provides clear and concise guidance on what to expect from the moment men find out they’re going to be a dad until the moment their baby trooper deploys. It gives men everything they need to know for the whole 266 days of pregnancy (and counting) in a clear, straightforward format. It covers everything from the expected physical development of their baby trooper and their COs (Commanding Officers, or mums-to-be); ‘typical’ pregnancy symptoms and those that may indicate problems; what’s covered in the scans and appointments; how to apply for paternity leave and pay; diet and fitness; antenatal classes; what actually happens during and after labour; the kit a baby trooper needs; the ups and downs; where to go for support if it’s needed; and more. The aim is to mentally, physically and emotionally prepare men for fatherhood, but not saturation bomb them with information. However, that’s not to say that men have to be actively involved throughout the pregnancy, or there for the delivery. It’s a personal decision and whatever works for dads-to-be and their COs is the right way. The difference between now and the 1970s is that we men have a choice – and it’s up to us what we do with it.
