Mama Bamboo is the new eco-friendly nappy brand that came from nowhere to win the 2020 Mother & Baby Gold Award for Best Performance Disposable Nappy Range; beating Pampers and four supermarket brand shortlisted, but who are they?

Started two years ago Mama Bamboo was founded by mums, Laura Crawford and Jennie Potts. Frustrated with the choice and quality of nappies available for their own children, they sought to create a new nappy which would reduce babies’ nappy rash and improve their comfort whilst also being far kinder to the environment.

Words: Laura Crawford (Joint Founder)

Mama Bamboo was born because we wanted to develop a nappy which was naturally softer and breathable, without using the nasty chemicals that we knew must make nappy rash worse. Most babies now suffer nappy rash for +1 week a month for the first 12 months. It’s awful, and it’s not necessary. By using natural fabrics and excluding the chemicals we can reduce and even eradicate nappy rash for most babies. During our research we discovered bamboo, not only soft natural bamboo fibre has been proven to reduce bacterial growth. It has risen in popularity for adult sportswear, socks and bedding in recent years, because of its naturally antibacterial and breathable properties.

Unlike cotton, which needs an incredible amount of water to grow, bamboo grows fast enough to keep up with demand without the use of pesticides, fertilisers or false irrigation. We use only FSC certified bamboo and

we even participate in an afforestation program to offset our freight emissions. Every aspect of our supply chain has been checked, we know our bamboo is sustainably harvested and that we are establishing new growths.

Unlike most nappies we use 100% sustainable natural top and bottom layers, and we use 100% compostable liners. We’re the only nappy brand to use compostable packaging as well. Over 80% of the nappy will compost in a hot bin or industrial compost within 6 months.

We won the Mother&Baby award with the nappies, the award was based on performance and not the ecoelements. Real mums test the shortlisted products, and we were judged on high absorption, softness, comfort and fit. We were very proud to receive the award, we almost cried at the award ceremony when the reality hit that we had beaten all those big brands!

We are tiny in comparison to the likes of Pampers and the supermarkets. We launched once my youngest started nursery at the age of 3. Before that I was a full time ‘mummying’. The day I moved the cot out of the tiny front bedroom and moved my son into a proper bed, I moved in a desk and a laptop and got started. It
