I

n June 2011 my eldest daughter Eden was born and my life changed forever. As a new Mum I was given lots of advice and information from my midwife, health professionals, family and friends. I embraced Motherhood and went to as many groups and activities with Eden as I could fit into the week. My kitchen noticeboard was soon littered with baby information leaflets and children’s centre timetables making me wonder why this information wasn’t available in one place. I started to research and found that publications that existed in the area generally catered for older children of primary school age. I wanted something that catered for parents who were expecting and had very small children which didn’t seem to exist. I met with an artist friend and asked if he would produce a logo for me along with a ‘mock’ cover for the proposed publication. I also arranged meetings with North West maternity hospitals, children’s centres, children’s group leaders and of course parents to see whether they would be interested in being involved and was amazed by the positive response. I had never set up my own business before, so it was all new to me. I purchased and designed a website and got the ball rolling. EVERYTHING was a learning curve. I have to thank my husband Lee, my family and friends for the help and support they have given me along the way. The first issue was published and distributed for 1st May 2012. Eden was 11 months old and I was 3 months pregnant with my daughter Bethany at the time so it was certainly a huge risk to have a total /mummyandmemagazine

career change and I was very nervous handing my notice in at the law firm I worked for at the time. But I felt passionate about my idea and wanted a job that I could fit around my growing family. 4 years and 3 children later, I can honestly say that setting up Mummy and Me Magazine has been one of the most enjoyable, rewarding, challenging and educating things I have ever done. I have to say that I absolutely LOVE working in the Nursery Industry. Meeting companies who provide products and services for expecting parents to infant school aged children is really enjoyable for me, particularly as I have 4 children of my own. My girls often join me working on exhibition stands at The Baby & Toddler show, visit companies or put products and services to the test. I certainly LIVE what I am publishing about! Please tell others about our publication and following on social media www.facebook.com/mummyandmemagazine Twitter @mummyandmemag Thank-you once again for your support and I hope that you enjoy this 4th birthday issue of Mummy and Me Magazine!

Pregnancy

A-Z Pregnancy of

lcohol – The Department of Health, National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (RCOG), all recommend that during pregnancy you should avoid alcohol all together as this is the safest option for your unborn baby. This is particularly the case during the first 3 months of pregnancy because of a risk of miscarriage. If you do opt to have a drink, you should stick to one or two units of alcohol (equivalent to a small glass of wine) once or twice a week. raxton Hicks – From around 33 weeks of pregnancy (sometimes earlier), you may become aware of your uterus tightening from time to time. These are ‘practice contractions’ also known as Braxton Hicks. They start as a painless tightening starting at the top of your uterine muscles spreading downwards causing your abdomen to become very hard. They usually last around 15-30 seconds. These contractions will be irregular and infrequent. If you notice more than 4 of these within the space of an hour, if you are in a lot of pain or notice any vaginal discharge, you should contact your midwife. olostrum – During pregnancy, your body is preparing to produce milk for your baby. Therefore your breasts may be tender and sometimes from as early as week 14 your nipples may begin leaking a substance called Colostrum (first milk). This is nothing to worry about, however if you do have any concerns you should contact your midwife. oula – A doula is a non-medical birth companion who supports women and their families during pregnancy, childbirth and early parenthood. A doula can assist and help a mother in many ways. The National Childbirth Trust (NCT) state that “Having a doula present when a child is being born shortens first-time labour by an average of 2 hours” (www.nct.org.uk). Anyone in the UK can hire a doula. Search online Doula Directories or speak to your Maternity Hospital.

pisiotomy – Occasionally, during labour a doctor or midwife may make a cut in a woman’s perineum (the area between the vagina and the anus) to allower a widening of the vagina opening and to enable the baby to be delivered more easily. In some women, the perineum can tear during childbirth and with either a tear or episiotomy you will probably require stitches to repair the area. Massaging the perineum during the last weeks of pregnancy has been shown to reduce the likelihood of a tear or needing an episiotomy. For details on how to perform a perineal massage visit www.nct.org. uk/pregnancy/perineal-massage. Mummy and Me recommend using ‘Down Below’ perineal massage oil by the Natural Birthing Company. olic Acid – The Department of Health recommends that women should take a daily supplement of 400 micrograms of folic acid while they are trying to conceive and continue this dose for at least the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Consult your GP for further advice, particularly if you are taking antiepileptic medication as you may require a higher dose. There are many foods which also contain folic acid including; brown rice, granary bread and green leafy vegetables. Taking folic acid is very important for the development of a health foetus and can significantly reduce the risk of neutral tube defects such as spina bifida. Mummy and Me encourage you to learn more at www.gofolic.org.uk ums – Some women get swollen or sore gums in pregnancy that may lead to bleeding. Dental care is free during pregnancy and for one year after, so ensure that you visit your Dentist regularly. Ask your GP for a Maternity Exemption Certificate for free dental care and if you are not currently registered with a Dentist, visit www.nhs.uk where you can search for your nearest service. eartburn – Many women experience heartburn during pregnancy. It is harmless, but can cause discomfort. Antacids can be used during pregnancy. Speak to your Midwife or GP for further advice.

Pregnancy tching – Because of the increased blood supply, mild itching is common during pregnancy. As the skin across your belly stretches, it is also quite normal to experiencing itching. Use Shea Butter or other moisturisers to avoid the area becoming dry. There are rare conditions such as Cholestasis (causing itching of hands and feet amongst other areas), if you have any concerns speak to your Midwife or GP. oints – During pregnancy, your body produces a hormone called ‘Relaxin’ which (as the name suggests) relaxes your body’s ligaments and joints. As things loosen, you may experience joint pain. Some women develop pelvic pain referred to as ‘Pregnancy-related Pelvic Girdle Pain (PPGP) or Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD). According the NHS, these pains affect up to one in five pregnancy women to some degree. Getting early diagnosis can help minimise pain and avoid long-term discomfort. icks – Most women are first aware of their baby’s movements from around 18-20 weeks of pregnancy, however as every baby and pregnancy is different it may be later on for you. Movements can be kicks, swooshes, flips or turns (Hiccups however are NOT classed as movements). The number of movements tends to increase until 32 weeks when they will plateau. There is no set number of kicks you should be feeling, what is important is that you know what is normal for your individual baby. If you notice and increase or decrease in your baby’s regular movement pattern you should contact your midwife. Mummy and Me are proud to support Kicks Count as our Charity partner. Visit their website www.kickscount.org.uk ibido – Although for some, pregnancy can be a time when they wish to refrain from sexual activity, a lot of women find that their sex drive during pregnancy increases. Your breasts are getting bigger, an increase of blood flow engorging your vulva makes you more sensitive and your glowing skin and lushious locks can mean you look good and feel great. Orgasms in pregnancy can also become more frequent or more intense. Later in pregnancy, sex (and particularly an orgasm) can set off contractions. It is perfectly safe to have sex during pregnancy as your partner’s penis cannot penetrate beyond your vagina. However your midwife or GP

will advise you to avoid sex if you’ve had any heavy bleeding. You should also avoid sex if your waters have broken as this can increase infection. For more information speak to your GP/midwife or visit www.nhs.uk or www.nct.org.uk aternity Leave – Statutory Maternity Leave is 52 weeks, made up of; 26 weeks ‘Ordinary Maternity Leave’ and 26 weeks ‘Additional Maternity Leave’. You don’t have to take 52 weeks, but you must take 2 weeks leave after your baby is born. The earliest you can start your leave is 11 weeks before your due date. However your leave will also start if your baby is born early or your have a pregnancy-related illness in the 4 weeks before birth. For further information on maternity leave, rights and pay visit www.gov.uk/maternity-pay-leave ausea and vomiting in pregnancy (NVP) is a common condition affecting approximately 70% of pregnant women. Remember to keep your fluid intake up to prevent dehydration. Visit the website www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk or speak to your GP or Midwife.

Pregnancy ptions – When it comes to where and how you give birth, it is important to remember that you have options. You may decide to give birth at home, in a midwife led unit, birth centre or delivery suite in hospital. You also have options for; who you would like present at the birth, what birthing positions you would like to try, what pain relief you would like to use and even options post delivery such as who will cut the umbilical cord. It is a good idea to explore your options by speaking to your midwife, taking a tour of your maternity hospital, speaking to your partner and reading up on things that particularly interest you. elvic Floor Exercises – Once you have found out you are pregnant, you should begin doing pelvic floor exercises as soon as possible as they will lower your risk of experiencing incontinence. You can practice pelvic floor exercises anywhere! To strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, sit comfortably and squeeze the muscles (as though you are pausing mid-urination). Try to do 3 sets of 8 squeezes a day. Visit www.nhs.uk for more information. A5 Mummy and Me Ad.qxp_Layout 1 17/02/2015 00:57 Page 1

uitting Smoking – Stopping smoking will not only benefit your baby, but it will also benefit you. The NHS claim that in stopping smoking you will have less morning sickness, fewer complications in pregnancy, a reduction in the risk of stillbirth, a reduction in the risk of cot death and many other benefits. You can call the NHS Smoking Helpline on 0800 0224 332 or speak to your GP or midwife for advice. ecipes – With the list of foods you should avoid in pregnancy such as; raw eggs, caffeine, some soft/blue cheeses, pate etc. It’s reassuring to know that our regular columnist Annabel Karmel not only does fantastic toddler recipes, but you can find delicious Pregnancy Recipes at www.annabelkarmel.com iblings – Making siblings feel part of the process is the best way to ensure that they understand. Some parents choose to have siblings announce the pregnancy with a photo. Allow them to talk to ‘the bump’, perhaps let them help you pick items for their nursery, wardrobe or even their name (if you’re brave!). There are many books that you can read together and if you can, allow your children to meet small babies. Once the baby is born, many parents choose to have the new addition bring a gift for their older siblings too! ravel – Travelling in the early and final stages of pregnancy can be tiring and uncomfortable, so many prefer to take holidays during mid-pregnancy. Although flying is not thought to be harmful to you or your baby, you should discuss any health issues with a health professional before booking your holiday. You also need to check with the airline for their policy on flying in pregnancy. After 28 weeks, the airline may ask for a letter from your GP or Midwife. You also need to be aware of Deep Vein Thrombosis if looking to travel over 5 hours. Make sure that you drink plenty of water, move about wherever possible and wear supportive stockings to reduce leg swelling. mbilical Cord – Studies have shown there are benefits of ‘delayed cord clamping’. This is where the umbilical cord is not clamped or cut until after it has ceased pulsating, allowing a normal, healthy blood supply for your baby’s transition to life outside the womb. While the cord is still

Pregnancy pulsating, your baby is receiving their placental supply of oxygen, nutrients and increased blood volume. Most health professionals use delayed cord clamping, however you may wish to feature it in your birth plan along with who you will like to cut the cord. For more information on delayed cord clamping research, visit www.cord-claming.com itamins – Alongside Folic Acid, the government recommend that pregnant women (and women who are breastfeeding) should take a 10microgram supplement of Vitamin D daily. Eating a healthy diet is important to ensure that you are getting the vitamins and minerals that you need too. If you are under the age of 18 or on income support, you may be eligible for the Healthy Start scheme - vouchers to use for vegetables and vitamins. For more information call 0845 607 6823 or visit www.healthystart.nhs.uk hooping Cough Vaccination – Young babies with whooping cough can be very unwell and in severe cases can die. Pregnant women can safely help to protect their baby by getting vaccinated against Whooping Cough, ideally between 28 and 32 weeks in pregnancy (although they may be given the vaccine up to 38 weeks). This is a highly effective protection and will pass to your baby through the placenta helping to protect them until they are routinely vaccinated against whooping cough themselves. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has found no evidence of risk to pregnancy or babies since the vaccine was introduced to pregnant women in October 2012. For further information and to book your vaccination, speak to your GP surgery.

oga – Keeping active in pregnancy makes the changes to your body and weight gain easier for you to adapt to. It can also help with labour itself and to get your figure back post-birth. There are some exercises that should be avoided during pregnancy and you should always consult your GP or midwife about any exercise regimes. Yoga, Pilates and Swimming are great ways to safely keep active during pregnancy. zzz – The National Sleep Foundation conducted a poll on Women and Sleep and report that 78% of women have more disturbed sleep during pregnancy. The change in hormone levels, discomfort, frequent urination and other factors do not help. The N.S.F state that “For most women, getting a full night’s sleep becomes even harder once the baby is born. It is very important for pregnant women to prioritize sleep and to find effective strategies for managing their sleep problems as early as possible in their pregnancy”. Sleep on your left side to improve the flow of blood and nutrients to your baby and to your uterus and kidneys. For more great tips visit www. sleepfoundation.org/sleep-topics/pregnancyand-sleep and speak to your Midwife.

-rays – Radiation is often a concern for pregnant women. This can range from x-rays used for any injury to hand-held or whole body scanners at airports. Ultrasounds in pregnancy do not use ionizing radiation so are less of a health hazard. Ionising radiation is used in x-rays so you may be worried about the airport scanners. All technology deployed at airports has been assessed by government health and safety regulators who have concluded that there are no unacceptable risks to health. The radiation dose from these is very small. If you are concerned, you can request a body search at the airport as an alternative. Visit www.nct. org.uk/pregnancy/radiation-and-pregnancy or your airport website for more information. WWW.MUMMYANDMEMAGAZINE.CO.UK

In weeks 4-5 the embryo grows and develops within the lining of the womb. Outer cells form links with the mother’s blood supply and inner cells form into two, and then later, into three layers. Each grow to be different parts of the baby’s body.

Midwife to the Stars Zita West Shares Her Secrets on How to Get Healthy Eggs for Easter - www.zitawest.com

According to midwife to the stars and IVF clinic founder, Zita West, there are a few easy steps women can take which will enhance the environment in which eggs develop and mature, including lifestyle changes, proper nutrition and the right dietary supplements to get healthy eggs. What do eggs need? According to Zita, healthy eggs need: 1. A diet rich in protein. 2. Good gut health to absorb nutrients to build eggs. 3. Balanced blood sugar for balanced hormones. 4. Good blood flow. 5. Protection from free radicals. 6. Healthy fats for cell membranes. Zita says: ‘ Healthy eggs equals a healthy embryo which equals a healthy pregnancy and baby.’ Zita’s Top Tips: Take a multivitamin - Multivitamins and minerals produce the key building blocks needed for good quality eggs. As a premium multivitamin and multimineral supplement specifically designed to support fertility. The supplement you are taking should be alongside a micronutrient-rich diet to ensure that your eggs are in good shape. Good nutrition can support you and create an optimum environment in your body for the embryos to thrive. Good nutrition is fundamental to the health of all our body’s cells, including those that go on to make eggs and sperm, and even those that determine how fast a sperm will swim. Avoid environmental stressors - As you grow older, all your cells age - including your eggs. Unstable molecules called free radicals cause cellular destruction, and high levels of these will speed up the process of ageing and so damage eggs faster! That is why it is vital to avoid any environmental stressors that can cause this, like smoking and alcohol, so that your eggs are

14 |

protected as much as possible. Get enough antioxidants - Everyone knows that antioxidants are great for the body, but they are particularly great for eggs as they can neutralise the effect of those cell-damaging free radicals. Our Vitafem Boost 1 range is designed as an antioxidant ‘booster’ formulation for this very purpose, and should be taken alongside a general supplement to make your eggs stronger than ever. Focus on healthy fats - Some fats are better for us than others, and during preconception and pregnancy, those healthy fats should be your best friend. The cell membranes of the eggs need essential fatty acids to build up their outer layer cell membrane, and by containing Omega 3 essential fatty acids, the Vital DHA supplement can help you reach that optimum balance of healthy fats. Take Inositol - It has long been the case that women trying to conceive are advised to take folic acid, due to its proven ability to aid the normal development of eggs. But more and more, women are being told to take Inositol to balance their blood sugar and regulate their cycle. The new Inositol and Folate supplement provides the optimum combination of one’s needed intake of both during preconception and pregnancy, ultimately enhancing egg quality.

world are worried about. Over use of infant car seats is not recommended by health experts. What are the health problems associated with over use of car seats? Newborns lack the neck strength to pull their heads back .Therefore long periods in a car seat with their heads forward on their chests may lead to shallow breathing. This is sometimes referred to as Positional Asphyxia and can be highly dangerous. Some sleep deprived parents have been known to leave their babies in car seats overnight because their babies got so used to it they wouldn’t sleep anywhere else. In some cases this has sadly resulted in fatalities. Added to the shallow breathing is the fact that when seated in a semi flat position, blood circulation in the legs can be restricted. This lack of circulation can affect the flow of oxygen around the body. A study in the Journal of Paediatricians in 2009 found a decrease in oxygen levels of children who spent too much time in car seats. Reduced oxygen levels is referred to as Hypoxia and if the low level is sustained, brain damage can occur. Indeed they are wondering if this is a contributory factor to growth in ADHD. There is also the worry that being in a semi upright position for long periods may place a strain on your baby’s developing spine. Some parents keep their babies in their car seats even when awake instead of using that valuable

(N.I.C.E) The National Institute of Clinical Excellence now advise that children are taken out of car seats at the earliest convenience.

time on their tummy’s which promotes neck strength and motor skills. This extra time spent in a car seat may affect cranial development too. A study of 440 infants found that 205 had flat head syndrome (Plagiocephy). 46.6% is a very high figure considering that it is simply caused by too much time on their backs and not enough time on their tummies. Some parents know that they really don’t want to risk this and deliberately buy a car seat that stays in the car. However, lifting and laying a baby without waking still remains a stress that most parents struggle with. The risks however, of prolonged usage of car seats is a real cause for concern and that is why N.I.C.E have decided to encourage parents to remove babies from car seats at the earliest convenience. This puts certain types of travel systems under greater scrutiny and could add to the stress of mothers who need to get from A to B whilst ensuring that their babies get their much needed sleep. So what is the best option to replace the benefits of removing a baby from a car seat without waking them? The only product that offers a solution to the problem of moving a baby without waking them is not a removable car seat, but a garment called a Snugglebundl.

only supported but it stays absolutely still. This feature allows a baby to be moved around without waking them. It’s also thin material so when put in a car seat it is no different to a cardigan on the baby. The baby is kept safe and secure because the straps go over the baby’s chest and not the garment. When you put your baby in or take them out of the car seat the baby stays asleep! The company CEO, Mike Edwards says, “It works better than a travel system in that you still risk waking a baby up putting them in or taking them out of a car seat.

The Snugglebundl offers a solution to not leave a baby in a car seat for too long. Lift and lay your baby into and out of car seats without waking them. Using this product can also help: Positional Asphyxia - shallow breathing with head on chest for prolonged periods. Hypoxia - low oxygen levels to the brain due to circulation problems in a semi upright position for long periods. Positional Plagiocephaly long periods in car seats can contribute towards flat head syndrome.

However, with a Snugglebundl the head is fully supported so you can still take you baby out of a car seat late at night and not start your two hour punishment for waking the baby. Basically you get an upgraded travel system and it’s only the price of a garment. The most common comment we get from grandparents is that they wish this was around when they had their children”

The product works like a cosy wrap with handles. It works like a hammock so when the child is lifted the head is not

hen Gabriella was born at 27 weeks, she was an incredibly premature little baby. We would do ‘Kangaroo therapy’ with her, placing her inside our tshirts for skin to skin contact and to create a sense of security. As Gabriella grew, I noticed that she still really needed a secure space around her, often playing in the cupboard under the stairs where she could feel enclosed and secure. I decided that I wanted to make her a secure cosy space in her room where she could play and a little fabric teepee supported with poles seemed to be an ideal solution (really cute too). After making the teepee for Gabriella, I was so delighted with my achievement that I posted a picture to facebook and within a few minutes I was asked to create one for a neighbour’s daughter’s birthday! Other friends and family also really liked the concept of a playtent to give their own children a little space. It kind of took off from there really and I got into business completely accidently! The business started at my dining table - I would cut and sew every single order by hand. Over the past four years we have steadily grown and now have a wonderful production team turning our designs into beautiful little playtents. Because a teepee is a toy, it has to adhere to strict toy safety standards and as a mother of four children, I could completely understand why. Children have the most terrific imaginations and what might seem like a four sided play tent to an adult, needs to be strong enough to withstand childhood games. I wanted to bring a product to the market that incorporated classic childhood themes in the most superior quality that could withstand the test of childhood and be passed to the next generation. As an invested purchase, I wanted parents to be able to buy everything they needed in one box, the teepee, poles, a mat and accessories from a brand they could learn

to trust for a quality play teepee. We also worked on the design structure so that the poles could be handcrafted to detach making the teepee a suitably portable, perfect for taking a familiar space along to unfamiliar places. We are a real family business. Gali (my husband) takes all the photographs, he designed, built and manages the website and when he is not running his other two jobs, he is with me late at night when the kids are in bed packing orders at our warehouse. Gabriella now models for us in our product photoshoots too! Having previously given up my nursing career to be a stay at home mum and full time carer to my son Yosef who has a rare genetic disorder, it was really good to have something that I could work on flexibly around my family and caring commitments. I always made all the soft furnishings, curtains and blinds for our home, so it was great fun to be able to create and design professionally. It is never easy juggling the family around work commitments. A couple of years ago when Gabriella had a very serious accident requiring brain surgery, I almost thought I would have to give up. But we managed to keep things going and if anything it made us more determined. We work late into the night and do pretty much everything ourselves. Our eldest daughter is now 18 and studying business at college, so as well as looking after her younger siblings when we are working, she is also keen to get involved with the business side of Myweeteepee. Myweeteepee has come such a long way in the last few years from a handmade teepee to a quality handcrafted product that has caught the attention of some large retailers who will be stocking our teepees shortly. We have some beautiful new designs that will be launched later this year and some other exciting products too.

With a wedding looming and a two week old baby, finding an outfit that allowed feeding was high on the agenda, but so too was looking great (especially since feeling it was likely to be a pipedream!). Frustratingly combining the two turned out to be harder than hoped for and so, after much research, trial and error, Milla was born. Launching a breastfeeding clothing brand had never been in my life plan but it’s funny how things turn out and I am loving it! Despite always having an interest in style, when I embarked on this journey, many aspects of the process were new to me. All I knew was that there must be a simpler way to be able to feed my baby without the need to be shrouded in reams of fabric or exposing myself to the world. Milla’s unique design is based on simplicity and practicality but all incorporated with style and elegance. We are a specialist clothing brand for breastfeeding mothers with an eye on fashion and style and an understanding of the need for practicality and comfort. Breastfeeding is a great privilege but today’s lifestyle does not always afford us the ability to fulfill the role easily. Milla’s unique and innovative feeding access has been devised to provide babies with a comfortable nursing experience and mothers with a practical feeding solution. We are careful to source stylish, quality fabrics that are easy to wash, hold their shape and are comfortable for both mother and baby. Our innovative design incorporates discreet zip access on either side of the top allowing full access to your nursing bra and our in-built modesty bands cover the tummy, ensuring full discretion, giving mums the utmost confidence. Our design is so discreet that garments are not obviously designed for nursing and can be worn long after you have stopped feeding.

When it comes to juggling Milla and family, I actually count myself pretty lucky. In today’s world we are no longer restricted by the limits of 9 to 5 which is a relief because being a Mummy doesn’t always allow for definitive timings. Thanks to technology we are now able to work ‘smarter’ and fit in around the demands of a family. When I am not in the office I have email on-the-go and find I take a number of calls when out and about (albeit the noise of the wind and squealing small people can hinder communication somewhat!). I tend to find myself chatting with Katharine, Milla’s Creative Director, in the evenings and I also find this time of day gives me the calmness I need to give everything a little more focussed attention. We are very lucky at Milla in that we love what we do and feel passionate about ensuring we deliver the best quality and most practical products. New mums have enough on their plates, so if we can provide them with a way that takes the pressure off one area of new parenting, then we feel good. We want to deliver products that we would be delighted with ourselves and we cross check this with every design we consider. I strongly believe that it’s a great deal easier to do a job you enjoy and even more so if you wholeheartedly believe in what you are striving to achieve. Milla currently offer a collection of breastfeeding tops but we are planning to launch a range of dresses later this year. These will predominantly be aimed at providing solutions to the clothing dilemmas of new mums when invited to weddings, christenings, parties etc. Let’s face it, no-one should be made to hide away and Use Code miss out on the ‘MUMMY’ at fun as a result millaonline.co.uk of choosing to breastfeed. for a 15% reader discount. he National Autistic Society describes Autism as ‘a lifelong, developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people, and how they experience the world around them’. Getting a diagnosis for your child can be a positive thing as it can mean you have an explanation for some of the difficulties your child may have been experiencing and it will also give you access to support and services to help you and your child. Ready for school?

Creative Learning

Why playing with teddy is as important as practising your ABCs... Hoorah! The wait is over – you›ve got your child’s primary school place confirmed. So what next? Experienced teachers Paul and Ann Broadbent explain what you can do to help your child adjust.

A

long with the families of around 400,000 four year olds across the country, you’ll now know which school your child will start at in September. However, the confirmation that ‘big school’ is just around the corner can leave some parents anxious – after all, the move up represents a big step in your child’s development. Happily, there are ways to make the change easier. Many parents believe that a good start at school depends on a child’s ability to say their ABCs, add up or write, whereas actually it’s often the softer skills that can make the biggest difference to how well your little one settles in.

Something to keep in mind is that learning in Reception is mainly play-based, so any worries you have about them sitting formally at a desk can be put to one side. An important goal of the Reception year is to teach children how school works, from lining up for lunch, to holding a pencil and forming letters. You will be surprised at how your little one takes to it like a duck to water – even if it takes the grown-ups a little longer to adjust. Paul and Ann Broadbent have written in excess of 600 educational books and are the creators of a new app called Ready For School (Ages 3-4) to help young children make the transition to big school. www.readyforschool.co.uk You can follow @ReadyForSchool_ on Twitter or Facebook for additional tips on how to get your pre-schooler ready for September.

Here are a few examples of things you might like to do to prepare your child for starting school:

1. Role play with teddy - Use teddies to explain

the types of activities that happen at school. Sit them in a circle and read a book, sort and count bricks or paint a picture. After a while ring a bell and say ’Playtime!’ and put on coats to go outside. This role play can help school routines seem less daunting.

2. Dressing themselves - Getting dressed for

PE can be difficult for little ones. Buttons can be tricky and knowing the order to put on clothes. Practising at home beforehand can really help. Give fun instructions, like ‘put the train through the tunnel’ instead of put your hand in the sleeve. Children like funny mistakes so put on a shoe before a sock!

3. The idea of time - It helps children to settle

if they know when mummy, daddy or the childminder will pick them up. Time is best explained through daily events and meal times – show me a toddler who doesn’t know when lunch is! By saying ‘You’ll stay at school for lunch, then have a play, then I will come pick you up’, you help explain time in their own terms.
