CONTRACTUAL ERRORS AND LACK OF SUPPORT BLAMED: CALL FOR FUNDING PROBE

Fall of Mthatha Bucks HOSEYA JUBASE

T

HE South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) has called on the provincial government to immediately institute a forensic investigation into the funds for the building of the Mthatha Stadium. “We want to know what happened to Mthatha Stadium and the resources that were meant to develop the stadium. We want the truth and this must be taken as an urgent matter. We are calling on MEC for Finance, Oscar Mabuyane, to institute the investigation with immediate effect,” said SANCO provincial chairperson Zukile Luyenge. About R254 million had been spent on building Mthatha Stadium. “Sport is not taken seriously; we are not prioritising sport in our government and in municipalities there is no official deployed as a member of mayoral committee responsible for sport.”

Luyenge said communities should work hand in hand with masters and legends and structures of social cohesion like SANCO to bring back those glory days in Mthatha. “The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture is the worst department receiving the smallest budget. “This department is not getting enough funding. Even the provincial budget is below R1 billion and it is unfortunate that business people are doubting that they are going to benefit by investing in sport. “As Mthatha leaders, we are competing instead of complementing each other.” He believes Mthatha lacks the political will to promote sport above everything. Tackling the fall of Mthatha Bucks, sports analyst Ravi Hlati said in order for a team to sustain its status, it needs financial muscle, but unfortunately both Mthatha Bucks and the then Bush Bucks never got that support. “In football once you sign a one-year contract with a player, it means in six months’

time that player does not belong to you because the player is allowed to sign a pre-contract to any team available, and professionally he is allowed to discuss his contract with another club.” Hlati said last season during the NFD Mthatha Bucks performed well, but failed to sign contracts with the players. “Coaches need to be given a chance to choose their own players. Football is about an understanding between the coach and the players, not management. Even the national team coach is not choosing the best players we have in the country; the coach chooses the right players he believes in. “Give a coach freedom; sign a long term contract with the coach and players. Don’t revamp the whole team when you are promoted or relegated to another division,” said Hlati. Both Luyenge and Hlati believe the lack of financial support, lack of leadership skills and infrastructure were some of the things that led to the fall of sport in general in Mthatha.

Indaba hosted to advise boys about initiation schools BABALWA NDLANYA BOYS from OR Tambo Inland voiced out the reasons that led them to go to bogus traditional surgeons and illegal circumcision schools in the 2018 Boys Indaba workshop, which was held at KSD TVET College, in Mthatha, last week. One of the boys, Aphiwe Mpakwe (18) from Matatiele, said they were humiliated and not treated like human beings by other boys who already went to circumcision schools. He said the peer pressure is also the reason why they decided to go to illegal schools. “The boys who went to circumcision schools don’t even allow us to eat food at school. As a result we are no longer eating at all even though the Department (of Education) supplies nutrition to our school. “To avoid this you just surrender to the pressure and go to these schools, even if

you are still under age,” said Mpakwe. This event was hosted by the Department of Education in the Eastern Cape, in partnership with Local Government Traditional Affairs, House of Traditional Leaders, Health and Social Development. According to the Education Department’s provincial special programmes acting director, Ayanda Mtirara, more than 95% of the initiation candidates were school boys. He said they had decided to host this programme with the aim of engaging with the boys who were ready to go to an initiation school and those who would be attending within the next two years. “This workshop was hosted in four districts from October 23 to 26, namely OR Tambo Inland, Chris Hani West, Buffalo City Metro and Nelson Mandela Metro. “The Boys’ Indaba workshop targeted boys between the ages of 16 and 20, where they debated issues such as initiation,

which is one of the traditional customs in the Eastern Cape,” Mtirara explained. He added that they had decided to stand up and do something to avoid the death and injuries of boys in the initiation schools. The spokesperson for Inkolo Kantu Traditional Movement, Loyiso Nqevu told the boys the principles of becoming a man. He said that real men don’t rape or do things that are not right. Instead, a real man will support and protect people who are next to him, he said. Nqevu said real men are the pillars of the nation. “There are a lot of things that you are taught in the initiation schools. Among those things is to love one another. “You are not told to do these bad things that you are doing after you have graduated,” said Nqevu. Boys were also given advice on what they should do when it’s time for them to go to initiation schools.

Three men arrested in murder case BABALWA NDLANYA POLICE officers arrested three men for the murder of a man (20) at Jojweni locality in Ngqamakhwe recently. Police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha, confirmed the incident, stating that the deceased was found by community members in a pool of blood.

“Ngqamakhwe police detectives worked hard and arrested the suspects. He had suffered knife wounds to his upper body. “The motive for the murder is not clear at this time,” said Manatha. Meanwhile, a man (26) from Ntlaza locality in Ngqeleni has been arrested by Ngqeleni Vispol after he was found in possession of two knives and an unlicensed firearm with eight rounds of ammunition.

Police spokesperson, Captain Dineo Koena, confirmed the incident. She said the suspect was arrested at his home in Ntlaza. Commander Brigadier Nomawawethu Makonza commended the police members who made a breakthrough and arrested the suspect. He said it is imperative that community members inform the police of criminals among them so that they can be put behind bars.

Two rapists found guilty in separate incidents BABALWA NDLANYA TWO men were sentenced by the Willowvale Regional Magistrate’s Court after they were found guilty in two different rape incidents. In the first incident a man from Mkhwezweni locality in Willowvale, who raped his former girl-

friend, was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment by the Willowvale Regional Magistrate’s Court, last week. Police spokesperson, Captain Jackson Manatha, confirmed the incident. According to him, Kenny Gangathele (35) met the victim while she was at her home. “The victim had just returned from a traditional ceremony on October 12, 2017 when she met Gangathele. “He then forced her to go with him to his home, where he raped her,” said Manatha. In another incident, Monde Mathana (45)

was sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment for raping a woman (74) at Mathanzima Village in Willowvale. On April 24, 2018, the victim was walking alone from Mathanzima Village to Dadamba Village in Willowvale. Manatha said she encountered Monde Mthana, who was not known to her. “He attacked the victim and dragged her to an open veld where he raped her. The case was investigated by Butterworth Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.” Butterworth Cluster welcomed the sentence handed to Mthana.

BABALWA NDLANYA POLICE officers conducted stop and search operations around Cofimvaba and visited taxi ranks and liquor outlets last week. According to the police spokesperson, Captain Namhla Mdleleni, during the operation they managed to confiscate cellphones and dangerous weapons. She said police also visited liquor outlets in order to decrease crime in that area. ) Mbashe Law Enforcement members and Butterworth Crime Intelligence arrested a man (34) for the possession of unlicensed firearm and three rounds of ammunition. The suspect was arrested at Mputi locality in Dutywa. ) Police officers from Barkley East arrested four suspects who are suspected of breaking into Madiba Shop and stole groceries and alcohol to the value of about R5 000. Police managed to arrest the suspects within a few hours after the incident. The Cluster Commander, Colonel Matshediso Gezani, commended the members on the quick response and arrests.

New ATM party holds provincial launch LUVO CAKATA NEWLY formed political party African Transformation Movement (ATM) attracted hundreds of people, mainly Twelve Apostle Church in Christ (TACC) members, as it held its official provincial launch at Walter Sisulu University Stadium in Mthatha on October 20. The TACC is said to be instrumental in the formation of the party together with five other congregations under the Messiah Council of Churches of South Africa. Speaking at the official launch, Bishop Siza Nongqunga, from TACC, said the ATM idea was conceived after witnessing many social ills such as corruption, greed and crime that prevail in the society today and that the current government seem to be unable to arrest. Nongqunga said the party was preaching the message of one human race, where no race is superior to another, which he says is

the foundation to build a united country and continent, free of the aforementioned social ills. He further criticised some of the recent developments in the country, mainly the legalisation of the private use of marijuana, saying this is not a progressive step but a step backward, especially in the fight against crime. The party also used the provincial launch to welcome more than 100 members from the Democratic Alliance from Ward 25 of Nyandeni Local Municipality who were welcomed by ATM Eastern Cape chairperson, Veliswa Mvenya. Mvenya also resigned from the DA earlier this year to join the ATM. One of the members who left the DA for ATM, Jongilizwe Mabungela (45), said he joined the ATM to follow in the footsteps of Mvenya, who he said was an exemplary leader who championed development in his area. Mabungela said he was further attracted to the ATM by the fact that it is formed by

church leaders who believe in the Christian and divine way of life. The party is led in the Eastern Cape by

Mvenya as chairperson, Sonwabile Kati as secretary, Barbara Nkwali as his deputy and Lubabalo Gqaza as treasurer.

DA dismisses alleged exodus of party members LUVO CAKATA THE Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Eastern Cape has dismissed reports of their members leaving the party to join the newly formed African Transformation Movement. The party was responding to the parading of over 100 people, purported to be former DA members, joining the ATM during its provincial launch held at Walter Sisulu University Stadium on October 20.

DA provincial spokesperson, Mlindi Nhanha, said after going through photos of people who were wearing their party T-shirts during the ATM rally, they managed to only identify Jongilizwe Mabungela. Nhanha claimed the rest were church members who were given DA T-shirts to make the numbers look bigger. “We are informed people were given DA T-shirts on arrival at the rally and this looked like a carefully choreographed ruse designed to mislead and cause panic among our mem-

bers,” said Nhanha. Asked about the chances of the DA increasing its support in the province and the DA premier candidate and leader Nqaba Bhanga’s chances to realise his ambition of being the Eastern Cape premier after the 2109 general elections, when there were seemingly members of the DA leaving the party and following Veliswa Mvenya to the newly formed ATM, Nhanha said the party was not losing support and that only a few members had left the party. “There is no exodus of DA members joining

ATM except a few individuals who could not make the cut to parliament. “Now all of a sudden they see prospects in other parties. “Our premier candidate, Nqaba Bhanga, has been travelling the length and breadth of the Eastern Cape listening to voters and our message is well received. “Polls show that the DA has tailwind and after the 2019 elections Mr Bhanga will be the first citizen of the Eastern Cape,” concluded Nhanha.

Twelve accident victims from church laid to rest

BABALWA NDLANYA SCORES of community members and government officials gathered at Putuma Junior Secondary School in Elliotdale to pay their last respects to 12 community members who died in an accident on October 14. Among the dignities who attended the mass funeral were the MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison, Weziwe Tikana, Deputy Speaker for the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature, Mlibo Qhoboshiyane, Mayor for the King Sabatha Dalindyebo Local Municipality, Councillor Dumani Zozo and the Mayor for Mbhashe Local Municipality, Councillor Samkelo Janda. All the deceased were the members of The Evangelical Apostolic Church In Zion. They were travelling from the church at Gengqe locality in Mqanduli when the incident happened. Siyabonga Yawa (31), Nontombi Mqwashela (22), Zine Mqikela (20), Luleka Msobomvu (32), Asisipho Msobomvu (7), Sanelisiwe Mdadlana (23), Naledi Mdadlana (25), Phumezo Ngcongolwane (23), Thembani Magaguni (24), Yongana Ntlahlane, (26) the Bishop of the church, Fumanekile Sihoyana (45) and his wife, Nokubonga Sihoyana (33), all died when the driver of the bakkie they were travelling in lost

control, which led to the vehicle overturning. Speaking for the families, one of the mourners, Jackson Mqwashele, said they were speechless about what government did for them.

“Even though the wound is very deep, your cooperation made us feel so special and we did not know that we had people who cared so much,” said Mqwashele. Zozo said they were forced to give the

families support because that’s what the government of the African National Congress (ANC) has vowed to do. “We are the only country that is still using vehicles that are not roadworthy and this is a big problem because our people are dying left and right. “When the community members were using buses, these accidents were very scarce, even though our roads were not in a good condition,” said Zozo. He said now the government had maintained the roads with the aim of helping citizens, but there were people who failed to obey the rules and caused unnecessary accidents. Tikana said the incident happened during Transport Month, a time when they were appealing to drivers to obey the rules of the roads at all times. “Whether it’s Transport Month or not, we don’t want to lose people due to car accidents because this is very painful. “Among the victims in this accident were the breadwinners (in their families). Some of them left their children (without parents) because of the person who failed to obey the rules of the roads,” said Tikana. She said they would not sit back but they would work hard to ensure that the behaviour of drivers changed to what is expected of them.

Ndaliso learners fail to write first exam paper due to protest BABALWA NDLANYA WHILE Grade 12 learners nationally started their final year exams last week, learners from Ndaliso Senior Secondary School in Lusikisiki protested and burned down the administration block, demanding that the Department of Education should give them permission to write all seven of their subjects. They also demanded the department give them new Grade 11 report cards which shows that they passed all their subjects in 2017 (despite the fact that they failed). According to the spokesperson for the Department of Education, Malibongwe Mtima, the burning of the administration block fol-

lowed a protest by the school’s Grade 12 progressed learners, who were protesting and demanding to write all the subjects despite the advice from the department to write some this year and the remainder of them next year as they were “multiple examination opportunity” candidates. “Due to this protest, 350 learners from this exam centre failed to write English first additional language (FAL) paper 1. “All the efforts were made to convince them but in vain. Out of 358 candidates registered to write their examination, 232 are progressed leaners while 126 are promoted learners,” said Mtima. He said during the protest the protesting learners also assaulted the deputy principal of the school. Mtima added that as part of managing the situation, a meeting was held to address the demands from the protestors. He said in the meeting a group of those learners agreed to write their examinations as from Tuesday while the other group remained hell bent on their course of action and wanted to disrupt all agreed upon issues. “The multistakeholders meeting adjourned having agreed to utilise a nearby school to accommodate those who wanted to write their examinations. The stakeholders agreed to continue engaging the small group, which did not want to write their examinations. “But the following day, the district offi-

Police had been called to monitor the tense situation at the school.” Mtima revealed that the department had issued a memo to all the schools and engaged with the principals and other stakeholders about these changes, meaning the learners were informed about this. He added that those who agreed to write at the nearby schools would be protected. One of the parents, Ntombizanele Nosen-

gela, said they were very disappointed about what happened in Ndaliso. “This is painful because it shows that even if our children can write their exams it will be a waste of time because they already missed English paper 1. But we trust God that there will be a solution on this. “Also we saw that the department worked very hard to ensure that the situation is calm,” said Nosengela. Police spokesperson Captain Nozuko Handile confirmed that police are investigating a case of arson but there had been no arrests.

Matrics motivated ahead of exams LUVO CAKATA NYANDENI Local Municipality, in partnership with the National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT), recently spent three weeks visiting high schools within the municipality, with the aim of giving the learners motivational talks ahead of the start of their final examinations, which are now underway. NECT district manager for OR Tambo Coastal, Siphiwo Tibane, said the school visits were warmly received by both learners and teachers. Tibane further said their visits were in response to the call by the National Development Plan for increased collaboration among stakeholders to improve educational outcomes. He further said the NECT was formed in 2013 to champion this collaboration and their commitment was to ensure

that by 2030, 90% of learners in South Africa passed mathematics, science and languages with at least 50%, in line with the NDP goals. Community services portfolio head in the Nyandeni Local Municipality, Winile Ngaveli, said the visits were also to promote reading as part of the International Literacy and World Book Campaign. “Our message to the learners was that they should make reading a habit at an early age, as well as to stress to them that there are other options one should explore if they failed their maric examinations, such as the Second Chance Matric initiative of the Basic Education Department. The visits were held under the theme, “Through Education everything is possible”, and a total of 26 high schools were visited as part of the motivational campaign.

Minister Mokonyane visits Ma Sisulu’s birthplace LUVO CAKATA THE Minister of Communications, Nomvula Mokonyane, recently paid a visit to Cofimvaba Hospital and All Saints Hospital in Ngcobo on October 23 as part of the centenary celebrations for Albertina Sisulu. The hospital visits focused on some of the roles Sisulu played in society as a nurse, midwife and caregiver, as well as her leadership role in the struggle for liberation. Communications spokesperson Mlimandlela Ndamase said the minister interacted with the management and staff of the hospitals. “Minister Mokonyane’s visit to these hospitals was to emphasise the importance of the

work of nurses and to motivate them to do their work diligently and follow the example of Albertina Sisulu, who was also a nurse by profession. The minister also participated in some of the tasks and duties performed by nurses on a daily basis,” said Ndamase. As part of the visit, the minister, together with Multichoice and MTN, donated 15 televions and five cellphones to each hospital. Ndamase said the main celebrations of Ma Sisulu’s centenary were planned for November, when a government delegation, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, is expected to visit various areas in the Chris Hani District. Sisulu was born in Xolobe, between Tsomo and Cofimvaba and her marital home was in Ngcobo.

Public Works pays tribute to the EPWP stars that made it to finish line REPORTER EXPANDED Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers traded their orange overalls for elegant wear for a night of glitz and glamour where the department recognised and rewarded the best performing EPWP projects and best performing teams in the department in the Kamoso and Service Excellence Awards at the Regent Hotel in East London on Saturday, October 20. Stakeholders from government departments, municipalities, public bodies, employees of the department and nominees from all the categories attended the third annual Kamoso and Service Excellence Awards. The Acting Head of Department, Mahlubandile Dickson Qwase, said the awards were to make sure that government delivers decent services to the people of the province and recognises excellence so as to motivate EPWP beneficiaries and public servants to deliver to the people of the Eastern Cape. “We want to encourage all nominees to excel

while improving the image of Public Works in general” he said. Hon MEC for Transport, Weziwe Tikana, who was acting on behalf of Hon.MEC Pemmy Majodina, said, “We are hosting these awards on the birthday of Mama Albertina

Nontsikelelo Sisulu, a warrior, a freedom fighter, nurse, a community builder, a women of elegance, a wife to a fellow activist, a mother and a fortified woman.” She further said, “As a province we have done extremely well and exceeded the thresh-

As a department responsible for coordination of EPWP, we have said that delivery in the EPWP targets is the number one priority of the department. “We must remember that EPWP is not only the property of Public Works, it is also a cross-cutting programme of government and it involves all of us and I can confidently say that working together we can achieve anything as spheres of government” The Mthatha-based King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality won two Kamoso awards in the category of Best Municipality: metropolitan, district and local (Social Sector) and Best implemented social sector project: municipal (Social Sector) “Congratulations once again to all the winners and to those who did not make the cut, I hope you will be motivated to work harder. These Awards afford officials from all sectors of government in the province an opportunity to celebrate the importance of public service,” said HOD Mahlubandile Qwase.

Khanya FM staff dismissed by SMS LUVO CAKATA BUTTERWORTH-BASED Khanya Community Radio management has allegedly dismissed 12 of its on-air employees, who are seen to be supporting the newly elected board of directors, by sending them SMS messages. One of the employees, who wanted to remain anonymous for fear of victimisation, confirmed receipt of the message saying they suspected they were dismissed for supporting the newly elected board, as only those who attended the meeting where the new board was elected received the SMS. Mthatha Express was also forwarded the alleged dismissal SMS which reads: “Good day, you are kindly requested not to report for duty until further notice. KCR management.”

It has also emerged that the new board of directors, which was elected on October 11 at a meeting held at Mnquma Municipality Council Chamber, has been interdicted from taking any decision involving the station, according to board secretary, Wezile Mgidlana. Mgidlana said they received a court interdict on Monday, October 22, but when they went to court the following day, the lawyer for the ousted board members was not in court and on Wednesday the magistrate was not available to hear their case. Mgidlana further said they were confident that they were a legally constituted board as they were elected in line with the constitution of the radio station. Numerous attempts to get comment from station manager, Siyabulela Phohlo, were unsuccessful, as his phone went straight to voicemail.

6 First ever Bitcoin office opened in Mthatha News

November 1, 2018 Mthatha Express

HOSEYA JUBASE THE first ever Bitcoin office in Mthatha has been opened. Some of the Mthatha Bitcoin miners who opened the office, Luvuyo Mlindazwe and Innocent Child Tshandu, told Express that this is the first office in the whole of the OR Tambo region. Both said they did intensive research and realised the current currency (the rand) had no future. They said there were problems with the currency, stating that the money is controlled by politicians and whatever happens in the political sphereaffects the value of the money. Mlindazwe and Tshandu said the current money was monopolised and channelled systematically to travel through a bank system; all banks across the world were institutions that, according to them, belong to one family, meaning only a few peo-

ple were benefiting from the wealth in the world and that was why the majority of people were very poor. “My research and study found that bitcoin is the total opposite of the government money; cryptocurrency is not controlled by politicians, which means if you own your bitcoin, you own your asset. You have total control of your wealth. “It is a decentralised system, meaning anyone who participates is benefiting from the wealth, not just individuals like the government system,” Mlindazwe said. Bitcoin was started in 2009 and then it was worth 10 cents. Within nine years, its value had increased to R100 000 in 2018 and experts are saying the bitcoin value won’t be less than half a million by 2020. Mlindelwa and Tshandu said the current money South Africa is using could come to an end by 2030/2040 and they appealed to poor people to invest in bitcoin. “When you are using Bitcoin, no

one has access to your money; it is safe as this is the safest system,” Tshandu said. He said what also motivated them was that the South African Reserve Bank was also starting to praise the importance of bitcoin in South Africa. Tshandu and Mlindelwa said the VBS mutual saga is a good example that it is easy to manipulate the current money system. People were losing their money and this showed that people could not rely on the current banking system. China, India and America are some of the biggest countries that are using bitcoin systems. In South Africa, the president’s son, Tumelo Ramaphosa, and other business people are now investing in Bitcoin. Cryptocurrency is also part of certain degree studies at South African universities. Former University of Pretoria professor, Dr Edson Pindza, is on a mis-

Pindza is a former University of Pretoria mathematics and financial specialist and he has started a school of cryptocurrency in Johannesburg.

The school will be officially launched in January 2019. The newly opened entrepreneurs’ bitcoin office in Mthatha is situated in the Tshezi Building in Madeira Street.

NPO encourages locals to be entrepreneurs HOSEYA JUBASE NON-PROFIT organisation, Baphakamise Health Promotion, which was established by 12 unemployed graduates, engaged with various government stakeholders and private entities on October 10, aimed at encouraging people to start being entrepreneurs at a young age. Baphakamise Health Promo-

tion director, Zimbini Madikiza, said the 12 graduates included one professional nurse, an unemployed social worker and other professional graduates, who were currently doing their honours degrees. Madikiza said they had established the organisation after experiencing the difficult reality of being unemployed as graduates and decided to do something rather than sit at home.

The NPO, serving as advocate of the community, supported by different stakeholders, is aiming at assisting rural people who were interested in opening businesses. “We seek to promote physical, emotional and spiritual health, fight crime and lower the unemployed rate. “Various entities are also part of the information day in encouraging youth to be part of economy development and teaching them how

to apply for funding. “Our main objective is community development and community participation in improving their skills and strengthening public participation.” Meanwhile, Simangile Ntoni, a developmental director from Vuna Group, which is a business advisory firm that deals with SMMEs and inspires entrepreneurs to realise their dreams, said their mandate is to migrate people from analogue to

digital system. He said the information day was intended to inform and educate people, because the majority of them don’t know where to go and how to start their own business. ECDC regional director, Dinga Madubela, urged people to start opening cooperatives, stating that the government was always available to assist and support people who were creating job opportunities for others.

KSD on a mission to speed up development LUVO CAKATA MTHATHA-BASED King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality (KSD) is making strides to accelerate and remove bottlenecks in development applications by developers within its jurisdiction area. This emerged during a one-day training programme, held to capacitate and empower members of the Municipal Planning Tribunal, held at Mthatha Stadium on October 25. KSD Director for Human Settlements, Nobuzwe Soldathi, said the formation of the Municipal Planning Tribunal, which consists of six members with a variety of expertise in development, such as engineers and town planners, will accelerate and decentralise the assessment and approval of development applications, as previously applications were managed in the provincial capital of Bhisho. Soldati said developers were already showing interest in developments in the Mthatha Airport precinct for shopping complexes and residential houses, which were planned for the area

in the near future. “The Municipal Planning Tribunal is tasked with evaluation and approval of development applications only and does not have the powers to give land to developers, as not all the land under the KSD municipality area is owned by the municipality,” said Soldathi. She further advised developers wishing to make applications for developments to first gain permission to develop such identified land from the owners of such land, as they have had challenges before of identifying land for development, only for the community to lay claim to such land as is currently the case with the Zimbane community land claim, which lays claim to vast land within the municipality. The training session was also attended by various government departments and stakeholders such as the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform, Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and the South African Local Government Association. The Municipal Planning Tribunal will serve for a period of five years.

Child actors spread cultural message HOSEYA JUBASE THE Khanyisa cultural group is embarking on a campaign aimed at educating people about the value of tradition and culture. A group of 20 Khanyisa cultural group actors are spreading their message through a themed play titled, The Fundamental: Back From The Woods. One of the actresses, Phiwe Maqina, said the fundamental message is that it does not matter what one believes in. “As long you move forward with what you

believe in, you can become a successful person in life. People should not be discriminated against because of their religion and traditions,” said Maqina. “The drama gives people an understanding that royal people can meet and need someone outside the royal family, as the play shows people from royal families and those who are coming from outside the royal family,” added Maqina. The play clearly explains and conveys a message that it is okay for the king to be uneducated and it is okay for the queen to be educated. Maqina said they are showing that the life of a king can continue without having many wives. Kings can be successful in life without being educated as long as they are partaking in their customs and traditions. Some of the people who recently watched the performance pointed out that the government and the Department of Arts and Culture needed to invest and fund organisations that developed the talents of black young people. “I was very shocked and emotional watching the children’s talent. It is a very exciting and interesting drama to watch,” said Mafu Majozi. Lamati Loyiso described the hunger expressed by these children through their performance as the source that government needed to invest in, in developing local content. “They are trained and skilled and they portray the true reflection of what they are doing,” said Lamati. Khanyisa High School public relations officer, Siyambonga Fatyela, said, “We are giving these children the opportunity to showcase their talent because not all of them will become doctors and pilots tomorrow. As we speak the school is in the process of building its own school theatre and this will be the first theatre in Mthatha.” The group also performed at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda (Grahamstown) in July.

Sanitary pad donation for Lusikisiki learners

Pledge signed to stamp out cheating in exams

REPORTER

BABALWA NDLANYA

AHEAD of International Day of the Girl Child recently, Hatch Engineering, in partnership with Palesa Pads, travelled from Johannesburg to Lusikisiki to deliver reusable sanitary pads kits to 115 primary and high school girls to help them keep them in school for five years.

THE Eastern Cape Department of Education and its stakeholders hosted a pledge signing ceremony at St John’s College in Mthatha, last week before the matric exams started.

Alex Nkosinathi Lubuzo, a member of the community and founder of the Imbokodo Zesizwe organisation, brought the girls of Guleni, Lingelethu and Zwelixolile Schools together with their parents and teachers. The day was filled with activities including a motivational talk from Hatch Engineering employees Maché van Aswegen and Phakama Magcayi. The Palesa Pads team, including founder, Sherie de Wet and business development director, Omphemetse Plaatjies treated the girls to a song and dance as well as a menstrual health talk and training.

The learners were overjoyed with the generous donation.

According to the Education Department spokesperson, Malibongwe Mtima, the signing of the pledge was organised to encourage learners so that there should be an irregularityfree examination. According to Mtima, the stakeholders who signed the pledge included members of the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU), Congress of South African Students of South Africa (COSAS) and other representatives of the matric learners. “We (previously) had a problem of learners who were sus-

pected of copying in the OR Tambo inland area, so we are trying to show them that they can do better without relying on copying. “In fact the (venue for the) signing of the pledge is rotating. “Next year it will be held in another inland (venue),” said Mtima. The principal of St John’s College, Zolisa Magaqa, confirmed that they had worked very hard to ensure that they obtained at least a 95% pass rate in the final exams this year. St John’s College regularly ranks as one of the top schools in the province’s matric results. “We did all we can to ensure that our learners remain focused on their studies,” Magaqa said, adding that they wanted to retain their reputation as a top quality school.

Mayambela remains captain despite clash with coach ELETHU MTIKI CHIPPA United coach, Eric Tinkler, has assured supporters that Mark Mayambela is still the captain of the team. The two had an altercation while the game was underway in last week’s 1-0 loss against Or-

lando Pirates in a Telkom Knockout clash at Orlando Stadium. Mayambela was substituted immediately after the incident. Speaking to the media after Saturday’s 1-0 defeat against Mamelodi Sundowns in a league clash at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane, Tinkler refused to give full details of what was happening between him and his captain, who

was not part of the team against Sundowns. “Mark was not selected for this game. It’s an internal matter; it will be dealt with internally. “I never slate a player in front of the public or to the media. It’s an internal matter; we will deal with it. Mark is still our captain and will play again,” Tinkler said. Despite the loss, the former Bafana Bafana

midfielder said he was pleased with how his side had performed against Sundowns at a packed Sisa Dukashe Stadium. The defeat saw the Port Elizabeth-based outfit languishing in the 13th spot on the log table with eight points from nine games. Their next league match will be against Kaizer Chiefs on November 10 at Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Baby Blues to test their strength in France

THE University of Fort Hare women’s rugby team, known as the Baby Blues, will next year test their strength against their European counterparts. This is after the university received an invitation to represent South Africa in a competition which will be held in France in April 2019, thanks to the connections of one of the Baby Blues players, Zandile ‘Slow Jam’ Khumalo. “I represented the SA students’ team in Namibia this year and got to meet people from countries such as France and Brazil. I established a good relationship with them. “About three weeks ago I received a text from my contacts in France saying they’re looking for a university to represent South Africa in next year’s competition. I was like, ‘Why not my team?’ This is good because not everyone will be able to make the provincial and national teams,” she explained. Khumalo, who made her debut for the senior Border women’s side this season, did not

Tornado travel to Mqanduli for final cup qualifier ELETHU MTIKI TORNADO FC coach, Tshepo Motsoeneng, says his team will not underestimate their opponents from the SAB League division when they meet in the final of the provincial Nedbank Cup qualifiers. The ABC Motsepe League champions will travel to Mqanduli United on Saturday after the latter conquered the Eastern Cape in SAB League following an emphatic 9-1 win in the final over Blackpool at the Dumpy Adams stadi-

um in Komani this past weekend. “We respect our opponents. They’re also professionals. Remember they are also looking to steal the spotlight. Being on TV is an opportunity to market yourself. The players want to be seen by scouts, including those from the national teams,” said Motsoeneng. The rule allows an SAB League side to host an ABC Motsepe League in the provincial final to determine the overall provincial winners who will play in the Nedbank Cup last 32 the following year. For the last three seasons in a row, the now defunct Eastern Cape Bees repre-

sented the province in the prestigious last 32 of the competition. Motsoeng said his Mdantsane-based team was determined to emerge as the provincial winners and go a long way in the cup. “We want to win this Nedbank Cup. We’re going to work harder to get to the last 32 so that we can go and compete fiercely against those professional clubs or whichever teams are there. “Whoever will come up against us will have to work three times harder than us,” he concluded.
