Solomon Comstock Society $1,000,000 and above In 1885 State Senator Solomon Comstock introduced a bill to establish a normal school and donated six acres of land for its site. Two years later, construction began. Livingston Lord Society $500,000 - $999,999 Livingston Lord became Moorhead Normal School’s first president in 1888. Minnesota Governor Andres McGill described President Lord as ‘young, energetic, full of wisdom and what is better, full of sense.” In addition to his duties as president, he taught Latin and “mental science.” He served as president for 11 years and hired 44 teachers during his term. Frances Wheeler Society $100,000 - $499,999 In 1893, Moorhead Normal School built its first dormitory, and Frances Wheeler was named preceptress. President Lord called her “a rare woman, a born genius, a woman whom to know was a privilege and association with her a liberal education in domestic art.” Wheeler Hall later served as the normal school, the teachers college, and the state college until campus expansion necessitated its demise in 1964. Praeceptor Society $75,000 - $99,999 The first Praeceptor(Latin for teacher) was published by the Moorhead Normal Senior class of 1915-16 and dedicated to President Frank Weld. The annual was a production of the senior class and, thanks to those students, the history of Moorhead Normal student life from 1916-1921 has been preserved. 1887 Society $50,000 - $74,999 On February 22, 1887, the Minnesota House of Representatives passed a bill appropriating $60,000 for construction of the Moorhead Normal School. Moorhead celebrated with a “Grand Banquet and Testimonial,” a gala affair to honor the “splendid efforts” of Solomon G. Comstock. Old Main Society $25,000 - $49,999 Moorhead Normal School’s first building was a three story structure of Kasota stone and brick. Dragon Society $10,000 - $24,999 The University’s dragon was born after the fire that devastated Old Main, the school’s central building, on February 9, 1930. Legend has it that Flora Frick, a physical education professor, saw the football team running out of a temporary dressing room below the campus heating plant and said, “They look just like dragons!”
