JOIN THE MOVEMENT

MOVING IS WHO WE ARE “Each person has their own unique way of managing the ups and downs of MS.” Over the years, the Minnesota Chapter has held a variety of educational and support Jeff Fisher, Community programs for people with MS. But one Support Coordinator thing we noticed was that people in their 20s and 30s weren’t attending as much as people in other age groups. We weren’t sure why, but one thing we did know was that we’d never find out unless we asked. That’s why the Minnesota Chapter went straight to the source. We developed an advisory group of people in their 20s and 30s to help us offer opportunities for Jill Parkinson, young adults affected by MS to connect Social Worker with one another and join the movement to end the disease. (Meet one of the group members on page 4.) Since then, we’ve learned that many people in their 20s and 30s prefer to gather in a more relaxed, social atmosphere. The group has helped organize several successful happy hours, picnics and more, and other cool events are in the works to network, support one another and most importantly, have fun. Each person has their own unique way of managing the ups and downs of MS. Whatever the case, we want you to Get involved have the tools to move forward. Promising treatments for MS

Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. National MS Society medical advisors recommend that people with MS talk with their health care professional about using one of these medications and about strategies and effective treatments to manage symptoms. If you or someone you know has MS, please contact the Society today at www.nationalMSsociety.org or 800-582-5296 to learn about ways to help manage multiple sclerosis and about current research that may one day reveal a cure.

Moving forward, together “There is something to be said for communicating with somebody your age who is dealing with a major health issue and is able to directly relate to you.” – Natasha Gjertson

Natasha Gjertson

I was diagnosed with MS Oct. 15, 2007, at the age of 27. I remember that day very well, as if it were just yesterday. I spent many days and nights researching the latest and greatest and made contacts at the MS Society looking for ways to get involved.

My participation began Nov. 11. That was the day registration opened for Walk MS, and I was determined to not only participate, but make my initial mark against MS. I had 50 friends and family registered in no time and raised nearly $16,000. In 2008, I was honored to be named as the 2009 Walk MS Ambassador. I was also grateful to be featured in the chapter’s “Why Women?” educational campaign and in a New York Times article. I was beginning to feel that MS was changing my life, but in a way that I could never imagine — a positive one. Wow!

The 20s and 30s group has done some great things so far, and we are very excited for our future. In the past, we hosted a happy hour at the Happy Gnome, which offered an amazing opportunity to connect with others and share our stories, not to mention lots of laughs! We’re also working with the Noran Neurological Clinic to fund quarterly events for people affected by MS in their 20s and 30s, including the Saint Paul Saints game this August (see page 14). I have been honored to participate in this group, along with other activities the MS Society has to offer. I feel so grateful every day to be a part of the movement to end MS. I do realize that none of these things will cure me of this disease, but it sure does give me the strength to keep fighting.

Get involved Check out the next 20s and 30s event on page 14.

In the past year, the one group that has truly influenced my life is the 20s and 30s group. There is something to be said for communicating with somebody your age who is dealing with a major health issue and is able to directly relate to you.

Make your voice count. Learn about opportunities to be an activist.

We all have something to say and a story to share. This summer and fall, take advantage of important opportunities to speak up and make your mark.

What changes would you like to see? The Minnesota Chapter is holding town hall meetings throughout the state to identify issues that affect people with MS and their families. Not only will we learn how to better serve people affected by the disease, but the information you share will help us shape the chapter’s legislative platform for 2011. The chapter’s legislative work will be built by people like you! And as we work hard to raise awareness at the Capitol, we’ll be calling on you to share your story. Meet the candidates and cast your ballot Voting is one of the most important ways to speak up. Election Day is Nov. 2, and several important offices are up for election, including U.S. Representative, Governor, State Senator and State Representative. The Minnesota Chapter is working with community organizations to hold candidate forums and networking events in the months

leading up to Nov. 2. This is the perfect chance to meet the candidates, ask your questions and raise awareness about the issues that affect people with MS. Currently events are being planned for the Twin Cities, St. Cloud, Winona, Rochester, Duluth and Red Wing, as well as other cities statewide. Stay in the loop Visit our website or Facebook page for updates on meeting dates and locations. Or better yet, become an Action Alert member and receive e-mails about the events. Simply visit MSsociety.org, click on “Take Action” on the left-hand menu and look for the blue box with Action Alert details.

Questions? To learn more about town halls meetings, voting or event dates, contact Jenna at 612-335-7981.

Tips: Beat the heat Stay cool this summer.

Summer is here, which means temperatures are on the rise. Overheating can aggravate a multitude of MS symptoms including fatigue, weakness and vision problems. Here are some common minimizers:

Drink plenty of fluids. n Drink cool water or suck on ice cubes. n

Avoid caffeine as this acts as a diuretic.

Use fans, air conditioning or even hand-held spray bottles. n Air-conditioners can be tax-deductible with a document from your physician. n

Plus, the Minnesota Chapter’s Aids for Daily Living Grant can help cover the cost.

Exercise in a cool environment. n If you are exercising outside, pick the cooler times of the day, usually early morning or evening. n

Exercising in cool water (recommended temperature 80-84 degrees) is an excellent way to combat heat during physical activity.

Wear commercial cooling garments such as vests, headbands and neckbands. n The chapter’s Aids for Daily Living Grant can help cover the cost of cooling garments. n

A simple damp towel can be helpful, if you do not have one of these products.

A cool bath or shower can help reduce core body temperature.

Independent Living Grants The chapter may be able to help cover the cost of some of these items. For details, contact Scott at 612-335-7967 or sahlgren@MSsociety.org.

Mentor Program Connect with someone who understands.

Doug Bronson and his wife live just one mile north of the Iowa border. Living in the country and having MS, Bronson felt like he dropped out of society. After reading about the Mentor Program in a Minnesota Chapter newsletter, Bronson requested a mentor, hoping the support would alleviate his feelings of isolation and provide much-needed opportunities for socialization. Since his mentor Mark Caffrey lives in a suburban area west of the Twin Cities, they connect weekly over the phone. Bronson sometimes makes a list of specific things he wants to talk about with Caffrey. Sometimes they just talk about general plans. Bronson says he and Caffrey “clicked.” They can talk about anything, and he doesn’t have to worry. And while they have a lot of differences — different hometowns, different challenges — they have similarities, too. The program has helped Bronson get information from someone who has similar needs. “Talking with Mark helps me figure stuff out. I’m not fretting — the answers come to you without trying,” Bronson said. “He doesn’t tell me what to do. He shares what he’s done and offers to provide information.”

What’s online? We Keep Moving.

Week four of We Keep Moving took the team to South Euclid, Ohio, where they met Dale Edberg, an MS research and former Minnesota Chapter volunteer.

Moving forward is what life is all about. We Keep Moving is a website for people affected by multiple sclerosis that showcases unique stories about what it means to live with MS, journeys of overcoming the obstacles and how we each keep moving in our own way.

Watch the journey Visit WeKeepMoving.org to watch the videos, check out photos and even connect with the production team.

The journey WeKeepMoving.org documents a 10-week journey across the U.S. where a team of three people living with MS — including a host, producer and photographer — captured the stories of 10 amazing individuals about how they keep moving regardless of MS. Each week, three different story summaries were presented for public voting, and votes were tallied to determine where the team went the following week.
