MOVING IS WHO WE ARE “Many versions. One vision. A world free of MS.” Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable disease that affects no two people in exactly the same way. Each person touched by the disease has his or her own unique Megan Sparks, Director story and shares our vision of a world free of Professional Outreach of MS. The MS Annual Convention is and Education a time to gather as a diverse and united community of passionate individuals to raise awareness; learn and educate people in our communities; engage others in the movement to end the disease; and provide hope and support to people living with MS, including caregivers, families and friends. Each person’s story of their vision of a world free of MS has the potential to foster relationships and inspire movement, which is why this year’s MS Annual Convention — Jan. 22, 2011, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel Minneapolis — will highlight the many answers to the question, “What does a world free of MS look like to you?” Join the Movement® at this year’s MS Annual Convention. Connect with others, share stories and learn how we are moving toward a world free of MS together. Hear internationally acclaimed MS expert Dr. Randall Schapiro discuss the latest achievements and future directions in MS care and visit the vendor exhibition area for tips and resources. Plus, attend the Minnesota Chapter’s annual meeting to review the progress we’ve made and what’s in store for the year ahead. Promising treatments for MS

Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. National MS Society medical advisors recommend that people with MS talk with their health care professional about using one of these medications and about strategies and effective treatments to manage symptoms. If you or someone you know has MS, please contact the Society today at nationalMSsociety.org or 800-582-5296 to learn about ways to help manage multiple sclerosis and about current research that may one day reveal a cure.

Care partners need care, too November is National Family Caregivers Month. The Minnesota Chapter honors all who provide care for people with MS. The MS Society has not only served my wife, Alicia, with direct services and support, the society has also been sort of a “caregiver” to me, the care partner. Over the last 25 years, using the MS Society as a resource has Tim Blank followed the same up-anddown path as Alicia’s journey with her MS. My first connections with the MS Society were critically important. Because of an early referral by Alicia’s physician, I was able to obtain reliable and comprehensive information from the MS Society through newly diagnosed education seminars and a variety of materials. Information is a source of security for me, and the MS Society has consistently been the main provider of that information. The MS Society has also been the source of significant personal growth for me. Through education seminars, care partner groups, couples getaways, social services and referrals to professional advisors, I have met hundreds of people and established dozens of lifelong relationships. It is as if there is an added and special dimension to my life that I would have

4

missed had I not made these connections. I am confident the MS Society has stretched my capacity for empathy, support and understanding, especially for families who face the daily challenges of chronic disease.

When care partners need a break Caring for someone with MS can be deeply satisfying, but also can be physically and emotionally exhausting. Respite — temporary relief for family care partners — is an important family preservation and support service. The Minnesota Chapter provides care partner relief grants (up to $1,500 per year) to help cover the cost of home care or a temporary stay in a skilled facility so care partners can take a needed break. For more information, please contact Scott at 612-335-7900 or sahlgren@MSsociety.org.

Voting basics Looking for an easy way to get involved in activism? Vote!

“If we don’t speak with the voice we have, no one will hear us.”

Kris Peterson Diagnosed in 2003. Bike MS participant and activist.

Questions about voting? We can answer them! What counts as “proof of residence” if I want to register on election day? Proof of residence includes a photo ID with your current name and address. If your photo ID doesn’t have a current address, you also must bring a utility bill due within 30 days of election day, such as a telephone or cell phone, cable, Internet, electric, gas or water bill. I need transportation to the polls. What can I do? Some cities have services to give people rides to the polls. If you are in the metro area, call 877-50-RIDES to schedule transportation. What if I’m going to be out of town Nov. 2? Absentee voting is available if you can’t make it to the polls on election day. You can vote absentee by mail or in person at your county auditor’s office. Visit the Secretary of State website at sos.state.mn.us or contact your county auditor for information about obtaining forms.

I require assistance at the polls. Will there be someone to help me? Yes, election judges are available to help. You can ask for the ballot to be brought to you in your car. Two election judges from different political parties will bring the voting materials out and assist you. What’s AutoMARK? Every polling place will have an AutoMARK ballot marking device to assist voters who are blind or have limited vision. The device allows voters with disabilities to vote independently and privately by providing various accessibility options for marking their ballot.

Questions? Visit sos.state.mn.us for information about polling places, candidates and more. If you have questions or would like to reach out to voters in your area, contact Jenna at 612-335-7981 or jwashnieski@MSsociety.org.

Care Partner Appreciation Dinner November is National Family Caregivers Month.

Nov. 6 n Minneapolis In honor of National Family Caregivers Month, the Minnesota Chapter hosts the Care Partner Appreciation Dinner to recognize, thank and celebrate those in loving, supportive relationships with a person living with multiple sclerosis. It’s also an occasion to celebrate the caring people in our lives. The Minnesota Chapter invites all people with MS to bring your caring partner, family or friend to enjoy an evening of dining, music and entertainment!

Exercise programs Help us expand our MS exercise programs.

Do you want an MS exercise program in your community? Do you work at a fitness facility or know someone who does?

The Minnesota Chapter works with community wellness facilities to offer exercise programs for people with multiple sclerosis. There is growing evidence that participation in an exercise program helps manage many MS symptoms, in addition to improving overall health and well-being.

The Minnesota Chapter is reaching out to communities across the state to make exercise programs available for more people with MS. The chapter provides training programs for water exercise instructors and facility guidelines for starting and maintaining the programs.

The Minnesota Chapter provides more than 25 exercise programs, including: n

water exercise;

n

yoga;

n

Personal financial counseling Free counseling sessions with financial experts to help you navigate the complex world of money. Financial planning can be an intimidating subject, but there are experts who can provide guidance and support. The Minnesota Chapter, in collaboration with the Financial Education Partners Program (FEP), offers free personal financial counseling to people with MS.

If you are interested in financial counseling, contact Steve at 612-335-7974 or skorngable@MSsociety.org. Participants should not expect an FEP advisor to act as their long-term financial advisor or sell them financial products.

Volunteers from the Twin Cities Chapter of The Society of Financial Service Professionals provide this program. Individual counseling sessions are over the telephone and last less than one hour.

These free professional consultations may help you address a variety of financial topics, including: n basic

budgeting;

n savings

vehicles: pros and cons;

n insurance

analysis, claims assistance;

n investment

review and planning;

n employee

benefits analysis: medical plans, disability coverage and life insurance;

n retirement

planning: analysis and tax planning/effectiveness; and

n estate

planning: strategies to maximize inheritances.

When care partners need a break Caring for someone with MS can be deeply satisfying, but also physically and emotionally exhausting. Respite — temporary relief for family care partners — is an important family preservation and support service.

We’re here to help. The Minnesota Chapter provides care partner relief grants to help cover the cost of home care or a temporary stay in a skilled facility so care partners can take a break. For more information, contact Scott at 612-335-7900, 800-582-5296 or sahlgren@MSsociety.org.
