MOVING IS WHO WE ARE “We’ll keep the lights lit, Linda.”

Linda Munson,Vice President of Programs

Linda Munson, former vice president of programs at the National MS Society, Minnesota Chapter, retired from her position June 30. During her many years with the chapter, Linda left a significant impact in the area of programs and services.

Linda planted many seeds over the years and encouraged staff and volunteers to cultivate those seeds into something spectacular. She knew our staff alone could never effectively reach the more than 10,000 people with MS in our chapter area. She often said, “We need to keep the lights lit everywhere,” so she worked to ensure MS clubs and groups were empowered to deliver programs locally. She helped change the organization’s culture to better utilize volunteers and now, many develop and implement programs statewide. Linda also ensured financial and social services continued to be available through the recession. Because of her passion for programs such as caregiver respite and chore services, the Minnesota Chapter has become a model in service delivery. “Collaboration” and “connection” are words Linda used regularly. Her vision for a collaborative adult day program was realized in Sartell, Minn. She knew clinics could deliver client programs and made that connection. Among these accomplishments, she also oversaw a marriage between fundraising events and programs that connected more people to the Society’s mission. We will miss Linda greatly, but her impact on the Minnesota Chapter will continue long after her retirement. She helped build an expert team of committed leaders who promise to “keep the lights lit.” Sponsorship of Society programs or events does not connote the National Multiple Sclerosis Society recognizes superiority in products or services provided by the sponsoring entity over other entities providing like or similar products or services.

Promising treatments for MS

Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. National MS Society medical advisors recommend people with MS talk with their health care professional about using one of these medications and about strategies and effective treatments to manage symptoms. If you or someone you know has MS, please contact the Society today at nationalMSsociety.org or 800-582-5296 to learn about ways to help manage multiple sclerosis and about current research that may one day reveal a cure.

National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Minnesota Chapter

Grieving an MS diagnosis and finding hope Experience the value in attending programs for care partners.

Barb Soder’s mother was diagnosed with MS when Barb was only 7 years old. “I remember attending an MS group’s Christmas party with Mom when I was about 9. It seemed like lots Barb Soder of people there were using those old-style metal wheelchairs. I wondered ‘Is this what’s going to happen to my mom?’ Looking back, I realize it was a pretty overwhelming experience.” In 2009, Barb and her mother attended “Grieving lost dreams. Welcoming new ones,” a National MS Society program featuring Tom Ellis, executive director of the Center for Grief, Loss and Transition. The program focuses on strategies for facing the challenges of MS and includes a morning session for people with MS and their care partners and a breakout session for care partners only. “A particular point Tom made during his presentation has especially stuck with me,” said Barb. “He helped me identify and name my own process of grieving over the impact MS would

have on my mom, me and our family. I had never thought of it that way before and continue to find it a true and helpful perspective. When a person is living with MS, the whole family also is living with it, and each member of the family has their own, unique experience of living with this disease.” Barb found the care partner breakout session especially valuable. “I never had the opportunity to attend a session just for us, the family care partners. I was surprised by how grateful I felt.” After the program, the Minnesota Chapter coordinated three follow-up sessions, also facilitated by Ellis. “Tom handed out these really nice notebooks and encouraged us to begin journaling as one way to take care of ourselves. Through the follow-up sessions with Tom and other care partners, I began to appreciate the importance of taking care of me! We can care better for others when we take care of ourselves.”

Learn more “Grieving lost dreams. Welcoming new ones” will be offered in St. Cloud Sept. 17. See page 13 for details.

Activism equals … The National MS Society recently launched the “MS=” campaign, which asks people to share what MS equals to them. You’ve likely seen this campaign on our website, in our newsletters and perhaps even in your community. Just like MS means different things to different people, “activism” means different things, too. Are you looking for some easy ways to help influence change? Check out these suggestions:

Activism = sharing The easiest thing you can do is share your story with people in your community. Whether you’re talking to friends or co-workers or speaking to a rotary club or newspaper reporter, your story has the power to educate and inspire people into action.

Activism = inviting Building a relationship with your elected officials is important and not as scary as it may sound. Reach out to your state senator and representative, and your U.S. congress member to invite them to your MS group or club to learn more about the disease and how it affects people.

We asked our Facebook friends to complete the sentence, “Activism = _______.” The wide range of responses included, “awareness and progress,” “the fight for real change,” “educating others about MS” and “hope.” Activism truly is each of these things! With awareness and education, we can create hope and real change.

Activism = learning Stay up to date with the latest MS activism news by becoming an Action Alert member. Visit tinyurl.com/MSActionAlert to sign up. Plus, follow us on Twitter at twitter.com/MSactivismMN.

Activism = fashion Raise awareness and start conversations by wearing a National MS Society shirt, hat or other gear. Or simply wear orange!

Activism = speaking up If there’s an issue affecting you or others, let the Minnesota Chapter know! We’re always looking for stories about drug co-pay increases, changes in PCA services, issues with health plans, ADA challenges and more.

Questions? Contact Jenna at 612-335-7981 or jenna.washnieski@nmss.org.

What does “MS=” to you?

MS = dreams lost. dreams rebuilt.

MS = thief

MS = skating on thin ice

This summer, the Minnesota Chapter brought the “MS=” campaign to a community near you. You may have seen “MS=” billboards, print ads and public service announcements, or maybe you noticed stories in your local newspaper about MS. This is part of the chapter’s commitment to reaching people and raising MS awareness throughout Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Many people submitted responses to the question, “What does MS equal to you?” Here’s what some of you said:

MS = Not knowing what tomorrow will bring MS = Seeing life from a unique perspective MS = Ticking timebomb MS = The reason I keep moving Tell the Minnesota Chapter what MS equals to you and learn more about the MS equals campaign at MSsociety.org.
