MOVING IS WHO WE ARE Youth in the MS movement The National MS Society understands that youth and teens with a connection to MS have unique experiences, and we recognize the importance of connecting them to other young people who share similar experiences. Because of this, we offer a number of ways for youth to get involved, meet peers, gain support and have fun. Krista Harding, Joining the movement to end MS doesn’t Family and Youth have to be scary, and it doesn’t require a Programs Coordinator huge commitment. Below are just a few examples of programs in which youth and teens can participate:

Prefer to do things as a whole family? Consider attending a family program together! Family programs are a great introduction to the National MS Society and will give you and your child(ren) a chance to meet others in a fun and casual setting. If you’re interested in learning more about youth and family programs, contact Krista at krista.harding@nmss.org or 800-582-5296 (option 2).

Sponsorship of Society programs or events does not connote the National Multiple Sclerosis Society recognizes superiority in products or services provided by the sponsoring entity over other entities providing like or similar products or services.

Promising treatments for MS

Studies show that early and ongoing treatment with an FDA-approved therapy can reduce future disease activity and improve quality of life for many people with multiple sclerosis. The National MS Society’s medical advisors recommend that people with MS talk with their health care professionals about using these medications and about effective strategies and treatments to manage symptoms. If you or someone you know has MS, please visit nationalMSsociety.org or call 800-582-5296 to learn more.

Teen programs foster friendships and more In 2006, Connor Harthorn attended Youth Camp. At 12 years old, being away from home for a week with people he didn’t know seemed daunting. As it turned out, he loved Youth Camp, his first real interaction with the National MS Society. Now 18, Connor has come back to Youth Camp every year and plans to return this summer as a counselor in training. Connor said, “I continued to go because I enjoy getting to know other kids whose parents have MS.” Connor Harthorn

Three of his younger siblings have followed in his footsteps, each attending every year since they were old enough to apply, while the fourth anxiously awaits his turn. Connor has since participated in a number of other Society youth, teen and family programs, like Teen Council, Teen Crew and Teen Summits. Through these programs, Connor has gained a number of close friends who understand where he’s coming from and share similar experiences related to having a parent who lives with MS. Connor said, “Attending Society events gives you opportunities to talk to people, but it also gives you an option to do fun things to get your mind off of MS.”

FEATURE PROGRAM

Priority issues in MS advocacy The Upper Midwest Chapter names four areas of focus for the 2013 legislative session. At the Upper Midwest Chapter, we relentlessly advocate for policies and research essential to people living with MS. Below are issues we’re monitoring during the 2013 legislative session. On behalf of more than 17,000 people living with MS in Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and portions of Wisconsin and Nebraska, the Upper Midwest Chapter advocates for the following priorities at the legislative level. n Support

MS research: We advocate for scientific and medical research that could stop the progression of MS, restore function and end MS forever. We support efforts to expand such research and oppose efforts that would hinder the ability to free the world from MS.

n Protect

programs for people living with MS: We work to limit and reverse the impact of state budget cuts on people living with MS and advocate for appropriations for human services, education, housing, public transportation and other programs that benefit people with MS and other disabilities and chronic disease.

n Advocate

for accessible, affordable and quality health care: We support initiatives that expand coverage, improve quality, increase access to care and provide greater affordability for people living with MS. We monitor and engage in developing health reform proposals, seek to improve health care programs and oppose legislation that negatively impacts people living with MS.

n Reduce

roadblocks to MS care: We support equitable and adequate coverage of medically necessary MS treatments, capping and reducing the out-of-pocket cost of MS care, eliminating specialty tiering and expanding prescription-assistance programs.

We need your story! As we advocate at the legislature, we want to learn about the barriers you and your family encounter in your health care, including access to MS disease-modifying medications. Your story helps us make a bigger impact at our state capitols. Contact Jenna at 612-335-7981 or jenna.washnieski@nmss.org to share your story.

MS Connection

MS KILLS CONNECTION CONNECTION KILLS MS

Make meaningful connections and access the most up-to-date resources. Multiple sclerosis destroys connections. It disconnects the mind from the body and people from each other. But what if we could defy this disease with the very thing it seeks to destroy: connections. Would we share more knowledge? More questions? More answers? More hope? Maybe, by connecting enough small victories, we could win some really big ones.

MS Connection — a new online community that’s all about making meaningful connections when, where and how you want — provides easy access to the best content and resources the MS community can bring you. You’ll learn about the topics that are most important to you, connect with people you want to connect with and have expert MS information right at your fingertips. Visit MSconnection.org, complete your community profile, find new connections, join and start groups and discussions and more. If you have any questions, please contact us at community@nmss.org.

MS Learn Online MS Learn Online, a Society internet program, is a convenient way to learn about multiple sclerosis. View new or archived programs on a wide variety of topics such as information for people newly diagnosed, basic facts about MS, symptom management, employment, intimacy, care partners, progressive MS and more. Registration is not required. To view a listing of topics and links, visit MSsociety.org and search “MS Learn Online.”

My Life, My MS, My Decisions This series of online classes will help you boost your decision-making power. Sometimes it can feel like other people are making your decisions for you — these classes keep you in the driver’s seat. For more information, visit nationalMSsociety.org and search “My Life, My MS, My Decisions,” or call 800-344-4867 (option 1).
