On the Cover: Team Disney rider at the Bike MS Bay to Bay Tour

Twelve years ago, four Disney employees started a bike team to ride in honor of a fellow Cast Member. From there, the team exploded to it’s current state, growing exponentially each year to over 200 riders and raising over $1 million cumulatively. Team Captain, Ryan Gianetta (pictured left with two thumbs up amongst his team) is riding for the first time since 2005 and tells us more. What has been your favorite part about being a Team Captain? The people! Not only meeting a great group of Cast Members and Employees from throughout the Walt Disney Company, but also other teams, the phenomenal staff, and the volunteers along with those impacted by MS who inspire us every day. What do you do to support your riders? Provide fundraising tips and tricks, have training rides and indoor cycling classes, and most importantly, provide encouragement and support to everyone, regardless of ability and experience on a bike. Why did you decide to ride this year? With a large team, comes a lot of support needed. I’ve been off the bike the last couple of years to facilitate logistics and set-up for our rides, staying one step ahead. I miss being out on the road with everyone, so this year I’m training with the hope that I can ride a few legs of the route, if not all of it. What are you most excited for during the ride? Taking a run at Torrey Pines hill again, the amazing views along the coast, and riding along side my teammates. Anything you’re worried about? I haven’t trained as much this year, so getting back on the saddle as much as possible is going to be key. The only other thing is a good bike... I’m looking for something more reliable and want to make sure it fits me. Anything else you’d like to share? Thank you to everyone who is a part of this movement! Remember, it’s a ride, not a race!

Volunteers make it happen

asking for more Bob Woodard

Want to get invoLVed? Contact us at 760-448-8434 and we’ll guide you through the process of asking your company to support the National MS SOciety. Last year, LOCAL Corporations helped support a variety of programs for people affected by MS.

Supporting the Society doesn’t always mean attending an event or writing a personal check. Sometimes, it’s as easy as asking your employer to help support the mission to create a world free of MS. Bob Woodard, a long-time supporter of the chapter, shares his tactic for getting his company involved. Last year, his request helped to fund our Turkey Delivery Program, which provides Thanksgiving meals to families and individuals in need (learn more about the program on page 7). “My main contribution in the Disney Cast Member Community Fund underwriting of the Turkey program was to be aware of the opportunity at Disney. Once I submitted the National MS Society as a candidate for the grant, they did all the work. The Society responded with a well-written proposal. My part was easy. Just check with your company to see if there is an opportunity for you to nominate. Check your company web site, any other company publication or public affairs department. Your part is usually quite easy.”

Prepare to vote advocacy

Make your vote count by Renee Vandlik

Election Day 2012 is on the horizon, so get ready to cast your vote for who best represents the issues you care about. Here’s what you need to know to vote in the elections on November 6.

The big picture

This fall, Americans will cast votes for the presidency, every member of the U.S. House of Representatives and one-third of the U.S. Senate. What’s different? Since the 2010 census, 15 million Americans became eligible to vote and an anticipated 50 million more will vote this November due to stronger engagement in national campaigns. However, people with disabilities register to vote at a 16 percent lower rate than other Americans. And with 1 in 10 eligible voters having a disability, that’s a lot of people whose voices aren’t being

This year, citizens in 30 states will have to comply with voter identification laws. Contact your local polling precinct ahead of time to find out what you’ll need. Also ask about accessibility: you don’t want to show up only to find out you can’t get in the door. Since 2005, The Help America Vote Act requires every precinct in the country to have at least one voting machine or system accessible to persons with disabilities, including those with vision impairments. Learn more at aapd.com/what-we-do/ voting/. If it’s difficult to vote in-person, plan to vote absentee. Learn more at longdistancevoter.org.

The informed voter

Go to nationalMSsociety.org/advocacy to learn more about issues important to people with MS, such as health care, accessibility and medical research. Then find out where the candidates stand on those issues— yourcandidatesyourhealth.org is one place to start. Renee Vandlik is the Society’s director of State Government and Local Government Relations.

New findings at AAN meeting by Marcella Durand

In April, over 12,000 neurologists and researchers gathered in New Orleans to present the latest research in multiple sclerosis at the American Academy of Neurology’s annual meeting. Here are some highlights.

Genzyme plans to file for FDA approval of alemtuzumab for MS in the second quarter of 2012. STOPPING THE DISEASE

STOPPING THE DISEASE

RESTORING WHAT’S BEEN LOST

Results of a phase III trial of Gilenya (fingolimod) indicated that a daily dose reduced the relapse rate by 48 percent compared with placebo in 778 people with relapsing-remitting MS. Gilenya is the first oral disease modifier for MS to be approved by the FDA.

Researchers have found that blocking LINGO-1, a nervous system molecule, increases myelin repair in mice. The first human trial evaluated the safety of the approach in 42 people with relapsing or secondary-progressive MS. Researchers reported no serious adverse events and support moving this repair strategy to a phase II clinical trial.
