Challenge walk ms

for me & my dad My name is Susan O’Connor and I was diagnosed with MS in 1999 at age 30. I’m very fortunate to say I’ve been living well, leading a normal, active lifestyle and being a mom to two young daughters, Sabrina (11) and Tabitha (6). Although MS has been “good” to me, I have experienced devastation along my journey. Just five months after my diagnosis, I learned I would share my unpredictable future with one of the most important people in my life -- my father. Dad and I lived with MS together for six years when he passed away after succumbing to pneumonia in January 2007. Dad’s untimely passing gave me a new perspective on life with MS and helped fuel my passion to make a difference. I formed TEAM DAD at Walk MS, became an advocate for my MS drug manufacturer, joined the National MS Society’s Educational Scholarship Committee, and more. My long MS journey was about to peak with my most personal challenge yet... Challenge Walk MS 2014. Last summer, my husband Chuck and I heard about Challenge Walk MS; a three day, 50 mile walk from Carlsbad to San Diego. My passion to help end MS by walking 50 miles was lurching me forward…I must do it THIS YEAR! I thought to myself, “I’m well today, I have the strength, courage and focus this year; I may not be so lucky next year.” I began fundraising in June and with lots of enthusiasm,

motivation and hope, I exceeded my goal by almost $2,000! I was proud and humbled by the outpouring of my community and support. Before I knew it, I was in San Diego to pursue a challenge that I thought would be an impossible feat a year ago. After crossing the finish line, I was hooked! I immediately signed on for Challenge Walk MS 2015! Meeting inspirational people, hearing their stories, and helping others to lead inspirational lives is why I choose to return year after year. I will continue to hope and fundraise for a future free of MS.

bike ms

I Ride With MS program Meet David, I Ride with MS participant, which recognizes Bike MS cyclists who are also living with multiple sclerosis. What compelled you to join I Ride With MS? Having just been diagnosed in April 2013, I thought it would be good to gather as much information and support as possible. Bike MS 2013 was my first organized bike ride. Why do you ride? For my Mom, Jane Whitford who died of MS in 1984 after suffering for over 20 years and at a time when there were no treatments available. For my friend Jacob Hamilton who was diagnosed with PPMS at the age of 18. And, finally, for myself and the millions of others who have MS. I am fortunate to have retained strength in my legs despite varying levels of numbness. I want to stay as active as possible for as long as possible and don’t want to look back and say, “I wish I had...”

Bay to Bay Tour 2015

Why would you encourage others to join? I was surprised to discover how few (less than 50 during 2013 and less than 60 for 2014) riders there were living with MS. I would encourage anyone with MS to participate; at least on some level. There is support for everyone at every level of ability. It is a ‘leap of faith’ but there is no failure. Bike MS: Bay to Bay Tour will take place on October 17 & 18, 2015. Register today at biketofinishMS.com or call 800.486.6762.

What was your favorite part about Bike MS 2014? It is unbelievable how well organized, supported and safe the ride is. There are so many thoughtful touches. What really stands out are the volunteers who encourage riders, guide us on the route and make sure we have everything; food, drinks, medical and mechanical services and so much more.

David

Advocacy updates The 24th Annual Public Policy Conference took place in Washington D.C. on March 9-11. Over 300 MS Activists conducted nearly 400 legislative visits with U.S. Senators, Representatives and their staff members to discuss the following important issues: • Advancing Research for Neurological Diseases Act (S. 849/H.R. 292)/ 21st Century Cures Initiative; • Ensuring Access to Quality Complex Rehabilitation Technology Act (H.R.1516) • Funding for MS Research through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program (CDMRP) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). MS researchers joined Society leaders and activists on key visits to provide the scientific perspective and the value and promise of their research, illustrating the need to support significant issues.

transparency and network adequacy-- including controlling out of pocket costs for prescription drugs.

At the state level, twenty-seven State Action Days were scheduled in 2015 and MS activists’ impact was felt across the country. Progress was made on legislative priorities, bills were signed into law by Governors, and important personal connections to MS were identified.

We also held the Advocacy 101 webinar in the month of May to engage more people in advocacy and teach them how they can spark direct action and influence their elected officials to make real policy change. A recording of this webinar is available at: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=nfIqIg5MQ4A.

In California, on the 5th Anniversary of the Affordable Care Act, 32 MS Activists advocated for greater health care reimbursement cost,

Volunteers

Join the Volunteer Leadership Team

“I came to San Diego two years ago for the sun and warmth. As a person with MS I was very involved at the Boston Chapter as a leader volunteer. Once I got here I wanted to be just as involved. The opportunity came for me to organize and manage a volunteer project which was providing ushers at the Valley View Casino Center for concerts. For each concert we usher the chapter is paid for providing the volunteers. The funds are used to help people with MS locally. I love being involved and now have a waiting list of volunteers who want to be part of the concert series!” - Marianne Dilworth “My wife, Ginny and I arrived in San Diego from New York last year. We wanted to be involved and experience everything this chapter had to offer. An opportunity presented itself from the concession organizers of the 2015 Farmers Insurance Golf Tournament. For every volunteer the Society provided to work the concession stands the chapter would be paid for the volunteer’s time. I was asked and agreed to head up this opportunity; recruiting, organizing and scheduling volunteers for the entire

four days of the tournament. Tournament officials were so impressed with our chapter volunteers that they want us back next February for the 2016 tournament. I look forward to leading this event again!” - Mark Mahigian “I have been volunteering for the Society with my friend Marianne for the past several years. Another paid volunteer opportunity for the Chapter to raise funds for people living with MS has presented itself through Ace Parking by providing route marshals at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon on May 31st. I was the leader of this event and the experience was fantastic even though it meant starting at 3:00 AM!” - Bettie Jo Adams Marianne, Mark and Bettie Jo have formed a volunteer leadership team to identify paid volunteer opportunities for the chapter. They are seeking leaders who want to be part of their team. If you are interested and want to find out about the qualifications, please email your name and phone number to casvolunteerleaders@nmss.org.

21ST ANNUAL

Tour of Champions & the top 150 fundraisers Last year, the Bike MS 150 Club (the overall top ranking 150 individual fundraisers) raised an incredible $1,011,325. What is even more impressing is that there were 26 cyclists who each personally fundraised over $10,000, qualifying them for the Tour of Champions. This year’s Tour of Champions was a special event held the weekend of May 1, 2015 at La Casa Del Zorro Resort and Spa in Borrego Springs. The weekend kicked off with an informal get together, followed by a short and fun Saturday morning bike ride. The highlight of the weekend was the private dinner catered by Chef Indo at the Happy Days house followed by a fundraising brainstorming session. A huge thank you goes out to board member Ally McGrory and the McGrory Family Fund for underwriting this incredible weekend. We look forward to next year’s event, March 1-3, 2016 as we hope to see even more riders qualify!

MS GOLF INVITATIONAL A SUCCESS! The 21st Annual MS Golf Invitational sponsored by Torrey Pines Bank at La Jolla Country Club was an astounding success. The event included 128 golfers, who raised over $210,000 to support the Society’s mission. It was a record breaking year thanks to our incredible sponsors, passionate committee members, remarkable event Chair, Doug Barnhart, and all those in attendance. RESEARCH

Have a voice in MS research Today, there are more options than ever before for people with multiple sclerosis to help drive MS research. They can choose to participate in clinical trials, donate DNA through blood samples, or complete health surveys. No matter where they live, what their background is, or what stage of the disease they are in, people with MS are at the heart of MS research. Here are some of the ways you can make your voice count.

Participate in clinical trials From testing a potential new therapy for MS to trying an exercise program to help manage symptoms of fatigue or spasticity, people with MS who participate in clinical trials make it possible to bring new medications and symptom-management strategies from the lab to their doctor’s office.

Who knows more about MS and its diverse impacts on life than people who live with this disease every day?

“The willingness of people with MS to participate in research studies and clinical trials is vital to understanding the complexities of the disease and to developing better treatments,” says Timothy Coetzee, PhD, Chief Advocacy, Services and Research Officer at the National MS Society. “They are the experts - who else knows more about MS and its diverse impacts on life than people who live with this disease every day?” In fact, researchers are increasingly looking at “patient-reported outcomes,” gathering information directly from individuals participating in studies to better capture how a treatment makes people feel. For more information on how to participate in current clinical trials, visit www. nationalMSsociety.org/clinicaltrials or search www.clinicaltrials.gov for ongoing MS research.

NARCOMS: Data that counts Participating in the North American Research Committee on Multiple Sclerosis, or NARCOMS, is another way people with MS can express their willingness to participate in MS research. Since its founding in 1993, more than 37,500 people with MS across the globe have joined its registry and more than 80 papers with research results utilizing data provided by participants have been published. Anyone with a diagnosis of MS can participate in NARCOMS. Visit www.narcoms.org to learn more.

iConquerMS™: Ask those with MS “If you want to know what it is like to live with MS, or how different lifestyle choices impact a person’s quality of life, or what questions people with MS are most interested in exploring, you ask those living with the disease,” says Lisa Emrich, a Washington, DC-based writer and blogger who was diagnosed with MS in 2005. Emrich is one of the first to sign up to participate in a new initiative, iConquerMS™, a unique patient-centered data collection system that allows people with MS to safely and securely share their health information and ideas for MS research with MS researchers nationwide.

17 If you want to know what it is like to live with MS, you ask those living with the disease. Through its online portal at www.iConquerMS. org, people with MS can share their health information and ideas about research. MS researchers can then use this shared data to find patterns in the disease that may not be visible otherwise, opening the potential to identify causes of MS, determine who will respond best to what therapy, and find new improved treatments for the disease. iConquerMS™ is focused on research topics driven by people with MS, and governed by people with MS at every step of the process. As part of a larger nationwide research network called PCORnet, iConquerMS™ contributes health data to many research efforts, while also providing MS researchers access to data from millions of people across the country. To learn more about the many ways you can help drive MS research forward, visit www.nationalMSsociety.org/Research/ Participate-in-Research-Studies or call us at 1-800-344-4867.
