Celebrating Those Who Build Cleveland

Building Excellence & Craftsmanship Awards event celebrates top work in the region By Beth Castelucci | Photos by Richard Matos

The event, which took place on Thursday, August 17 at Windows on the River on the West Bank of the Flats in Cleveland, included a cocktail networking reception and gala awards ceremony, creating the perfect opportunity for construction owners and members to engage, celebrate the accomplishments of their peers and build relationships with each other. Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb opened up the ceremony by expressing his appreciation for the trades and those who build the city saying, “Cleveland is a union town and will always be a union town… and we look forward to building once again for the next generation of Clevelanders.” More than 400 were in attendance to honor 20 individuals recognized as Apprentices of the Year; 26 indi-

viduals and 51 crew members as Craftsmanship Award winners; and 12 contractors as Building Excellence Award winners. The Building Excellence Awards includes new construction over $25

“These men and women deserve recognition for the hard work they perform day in and day out across our region.” Tim Linville CEA million, new construction between $10 and $25 million, new construction under $10 million, renovation construction over $10 million and

renovation construction under $10 million – all for projects completed between Jan. 1, 2021 and Dec. 31, 2022. “This is my first year being in the trades, and it’s like it’s ignited some pride in me that I didn’t realize was there,” says Hannah Brown, a carpenter apprentice who started her career through Cleveland Builds and was honored as an Apprentice of the Year. “Being recognized [with this award] is so humbling and exciting, and I think that’s how I know I’m in the right place... I couldn’t be more proud of the career change that I made.” Ironworker and Craftsmanship Award winner Kelly Martin, who has worked in the field for 25 years, says, “You’re proud when you’re an ironworker. You can walk by buildings and you can say, ‘I built that.’ You feel proud of it. Not too many people 3

onstruction Employers Association (CEA) continues to celebrate the craftsmen and women that build this city. The Building Excellence & Craftsmanship Awards is an elegant evening to celebrate and honor the construction companies, contractors, suppliers and professional advisors who have contributed to some of the iconic structures gracing the Cleveland skyline.

could say that, so it’s really humbling. Two thumbs up on ironworkers for this city and we’re going to keep building Cleveland!” Because Construction Employers Association (CEA) works to bring

together construction companies, contractors, suppliers and professional advisors to promote the union construction industry, the organization – along with the Cleveland Building & Construction Trades

Council (CBCTC), Mechanical and Plumbing Industry Council (MAPIC), Greater Cleveland chapter of National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), Northern Ohio Painting & Taping Contractors Association (NOPTCA) and Cleveland chapter of Sheet Metal & Air Conditioning National Association (SMACNA Cleveland) – hosts the Building Excellence & Craftsmanship Awards each year. “These men and women deserve recognition for the hard work they perform day in and day out across our region,” says Tim Linville, CEO of CEA. “I’m thankful to all the Cleveland Building and Construction Trades unions, union contractors and sponsors who made this program possible. It’s an exciting night for the industry.” ■ The 2024 Building Excellence and Craftsmanship Award nomination process will begin in December 2023 and are due by March 2024. Next year’s awards will cover work completed between January 1, 2022 and December 31, 2023. To learn more, visit www.ceacisp.org.

A new reinforced concrete sheet pile cap wall was installed to further protect the structure and provide a uniform fender system for ships to dock up against. The previous pipe pile supported deck was backfilled with 20,000+ cubic yards of flowable backfill, which allowed for the existing dock pavement to be replaced as well.

New Construction Under $10 Million

Flexjet is an airport for high-end private air travel. The roof needed to be not only functional but also pleasing to the eye – even for incoming jets. This resulted in a roof design with elaborate “wings.” The roof membrane changed from white at the field of the roof to gray at the wings to make them stand out. Every detail of the roof was reviewed carefully as they would be seen more than any other roof.
