fter the grand opening of the I PROMISE school in Akron in 2018, Cheryl Stephens got to thinking. Stephens, the president and CEO of the East Akron Neighborhood Development Corporation (EANDC), knew that without a good night’s sleep, it was difficult for students to wake up in the morning, go to school and focus on learning. If a student is unsure where the family might stay from night to night, the situation only exacerbates itself.

The solution is simple in theory: housing. A home for the entire family to sleep, cook, study and congregate in. With the EANDC being the largest housing-focused nonprofit in Summit County, Stephens and her staff already had most of what was needed to bring affordable housing to the nearby I PROMISE school. One important ingredient needed was a collaboration with the LeBron James Family Foundation to build more than housing, but a relationship with their I PROMISE Program’s families. I PROMISE is, of course, the program within the LeBron James Family Foundation that has been serving families in need across the Akron community with layers of support for years. After being introduced to the community liaison at the LeBron James

Family Foundation, EANDC proposed the idea of a partnership in building a brand-new affordable housing development within one to two miles of the I PROMISE school that would be targeted to families with school-aged children. The Foundation was interested but, as part of their diligence in maintaining trust with their families, needed to take a closer look at EANDC’s already established housing units to get a feel for the organization and its work within the community. The first site visit Stephens took a Foundation representative to was a single family unit that left a major impression. It turns out, through pure serendipity, the family living in that unit just happened to be an I PROMISE family. Stephens and EANDC had no way of knowing that beforehand. Sometimes it all just works out.

From there, they toured some other EANDC housing units and it became clear the LeBron James Family Foundation was interested in a partnership. The next step was letting legal counsel on both sides negotiate an MOU (memorandum of understanding) for I PROMISE to operate services from a future EANDC housing community and commit to working on a design together. The agreement was completed in time for Christmas in 2019.

Location

Stephens and EANDC toured many potential sites for the project and eventually decided the 1.2 acres along South Maple Street would be perfect. Located between Rhodes Avenue and Cedar Street, I PROMISE Housing is only a 15-minute walk and a half-mile from the I PROMISE School on West Market Street. Properties | August 2023
