Tim Pendergast of Jacksonville, FL was the guy tasked by the Speedway to track down as many of these historic automobiles and persuade the owners to allow them to be showcased at the Speedway over the anniversary weekend. In addition all the winning drivers were invited to attend in an effort to make the celebration complete.

The Speedway was not the scene of the opening celebrations but the Daytona Beach Ocean Center on the evening of January 26. It was only fitting the city of Daytona was involved as it has embraced the Speedway and the prime events like the Rolex 24 Hours. The historic cars were on display, food was served and speeches were made. The following morning (Friday the 27th) the cars were driven on the streets of Daytona

Featured Photographer Wes Duenkel, Goodlettsville, TN I’ve always had a passing interest in photography, but initially I was more interested in the building, engineering, and maintenance of race cars rather than photography. In college I studied product development and did an internship at Mustang race team and parts manufacturer, HP Motorsport in Omaha, Nebraska. Upon graduating from UW Stout in Menomonie, Wisconsin, I took a job in Nashville, but kept looking for a job in motorsports. It wasn’t until I got my first digital camera in 2004 and attended Petit LeMans at Road Atlanta that my interest in motorsports photography started to grow. In 2005 I met Scott Whitehead, the crew chief of a Rehagen Racing’s Grand-Am Cup racing team, at a track event at Nashville Superspeedway. I knew him from an internet forum, and asked if I could come and help during a race weekend. He obliged, and I met the team for the next round at Barber Motorsports Park. I brought my camera, and took some photos between wrenching on the car (I remember changing a rear differential and an engine that weekend). After Scott and the rest of the team saw the photos, they invited me to Mid-Ohio and added, “Maybe you should take more pictures.” Thanks to the steadfast support of great clients and my interest in “true-street-car-based” road racing, I’ve covered Grand-Am’s “street stock road racing series” in its various incarnations (Grand-Am Cup, Koni Challenge, and now Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge) almost exclusively for seven years. With two young boys (three and six years old), traveling 60 days a year can be logistically challenging, but my wife is extremely supportive (and has a real job with health insurance!).

My approach to each race weekend is to not only capture individual moments, but convey a narrative of the weekend. Like the best mechanics, engineers, and fabricators, I’m

Top right: The good and bad of motorsport photography. Capturing the Flying Lizards DP car on fire is what people want to see but the photographer knows the drivers and hopes they are safe. Middle right: A promotional shot for KIA drivers Trevor Hopwood and Adam Burrows. Bottom right: Wes wa.s contracted to capture the fortunes of the RSR MINIs and did a great job of it in all sorts of light MotorWerks Magazine - Online at www.motorwerksmag.com -  143
