With the shortest day behind us, it is time to start thinking about next year’s boating plans. We have a couple of things in this issue to whet your appetite, including a cruise report to the fabulous Netherlands via the inland waterways of Belgium. If this is on your bucket list, maybe 2018 is the year to do it, before the spectre of the issue with red diesel raises its ugly head again. If you would

and someone else to worry about marina bookings, fuel availability and of course, the weather. See page 60 for more details of our plans, but don’t procrastinate. We have limited availability and spaces usually fill up fast. Before then, of course, we kick the year off with the London Boat Show. We will be there every day, pounding the carpet to find the best new boats, engines and equipment to bring to you in the next issue. If you are planning a visit, it’s not too late to take advantage of the 2 for 1 ticket offer, which means you and a friend pay just £7.50 each. Click HERE and enter code MO15 for this special offer. Hopefully we will see a few of you there but, if you spot us first, please stop and say hello. It’s always great to meet you. NEWS Fairline Yachts to open factory and test facility on the south coast

The British boat manufacturer, Fairline Yachts, has announced that it will be opening a new manufacturing facility at Hythe, on the south coast of England. Fairline has taken possession of the 5-acre (20,000 sq metre) waterside site pictured on the western bank of Southampton Water, just south east of Hythe village and marina. Building works is expected to take around nine months to complete and the boat builder is expecting to launch the new facility, known as Fairline Marine Park, and begin boat building on the South Coast in the late summer of 2018. Fairline Yachts said ‘The new manufacturing facility will enable Fairline to build larger yachts, which has not been possible at the firm’s existing Oundle, Northamptonshire location. The boat yard’s manufacturing base in Oundle will continue to operate and will build boats up to 60ft. Boats over 60ft will be built at the new site in Hythe with testing, commissioning and customer handover also taking place there. Conveniently located in Southampton Water, the facility has large vessel, deep water berths and over 18,000 sq metres of undercover manufacturing space. It is expected the new facility will initially create up to 200 jobs in the Southampton area.’ Russell Currie, Managing Director of Fairline Yachts, said, “As the global yachting market evolves, clients from across the world are increasingly demanding larger yachts than we’ve been able to create. Our new site, to be named Fairline Marine Park, will boast state-of-the-art facilities, giving us room to expand and create bigger boats, whilst making the most of the existing boat building skills in the location. By increasing our manufacturing capabilities across both Northampton and Southampton, we are future-proofing Fairline Yachts and retaining our commitment of investing in British boat building.” Fairline Yachts currently produce a range of sportscruisers, flybridges and motor yachts between 43-78ft and recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Marine Licences ‘have your say’ says Environment Agency Inland marine licence holders have been invited by the Environment Agency (EA) to take part in a consultation regarding charge proposals from April 2018. In July the EA announced that it would increase charges for the River Thames by 5.7%, by 7.5% for Anglian Waterways and by 10% for the River Medway. The EA’s Director of Regulatory Charges, Neil Davies, said that the agency is undertaking “a comprehensive review of our fees and charges that fund these services. We are now consulting on our proposals and want you to have your say. The Environment Agency carries out a wide range of regulatory services fundamental to delivering our statutory duties and enabling you to operate within the law. Our charges for delivering these services have been fixed for six years or more and some don’t fully reflect the costs of the work that needs to be done. The aim of the review is to make sure our charges are fair and transparent and reflect the full cost of providing our chargeable services.” Proposals can be viewed and comments made online and the EA says it will take 30-60 mins to complete this consultation. The consultation will close on Friday, 26 January.

Bembridge Harbour regeneration plans approved Plans to regenerate the Solent boating haven, Bembridge, have been given the go ahead. After a few setbacks, in December final approval was given for investment in the marina infrastructure, a new Harbour facilities complex and 13 houses, by the Isle of Wight Council and Bembridge Harbour Trust. Owners and harbour operators, Malcolm & Fiona Thorpe, said “Our development programme, originally drafted in January 2016, is now being reviewed and updated to enable us to hit the ground running.” Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

Petrol now available at Milford Haven Marina

Visitors to Milford Marina in South Wales are now able to fill up with petrol following the installation of a dedicated 7,500-litre pump. The new petrol pump, located on the current fuel berth, just inside the lock, where diesel is already on offer, will be accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Melanie Durney, Marina and Docks Manager, said “This latest investment means that we are now able to offer everything a customer needs. We are already an accredited four Gold Anchor marina and this will take us one step closer to achieving five gold anchors. Our experienced staff are on hand 24/7 to assist with fuelling and have received really positive feedback since the new pump was installed.”

NEWS Bristol Marina Boatyard launch petition to save it Bristol Marina’s Boatyard’s future may be in jeopardy and a petition has been launched to save it. The independently run boatyard, which is next to the former Abels Dry Dock, is at risk after the Bristol City Council revealed it wants to make changes to its lease and take back some land, changes that may leave it ‘unviable to run’. The council informed the boatyard owner that it needs to take 40% of the land to accommodate a new un-named operator for the Dry Dock. Boatyard owner, Davina Lund, said “Our Boatyard is a last piece of living history in Bristol’s heritage of ship-building. This loss of space will mean the boatyard will quickly become unprofitable. We won’t have the space for the many commercial boats in the harbour, such as the Tower Belle and Bristol Ferries, to be maintained, repaired or safety checked. They will have nowhere else in the harbour to go. Bristol Marina’s boatyard is also the only place that dredgers can launch and provides unique emergency and support services to the harbour authority, rescuing boats in danger of sinking, potentially saving £1,000s of public money in salvage. The petition has been organised to demonstrate to the council the level of support the boatyard has amongst commercial and leisure boat owners, local businesses and residents. We feel there should be transparency and full consultation.”

Outboard power for Four Winns cruisers It seems the US boat builder, Four Winns, is following the market-changing trend and now offering outboard power options on a few of its cruiser models. The sterndrive engine has been traditionally favoured in the US. However, similar to Europe, the trend is now towards the outboard engine, as it offers more space onboard and easier maintenance. Four Winns is developing outboard models of the Horizon 290 and 350, as well as the pictured Vista 255 (sterndrive-version tested in September 2016 issue). 12

Broom Brokerage closes

editorial@motorboatowner.co.uk

QUALITY ASSURED NEW & PRE-OWNED BOATS

The Norfolk-based boat builder, Broom Boats will be closing its used boat brokerage division. It seems the company’s decision came after a re-evaluation of its business strategy and also its Boat Sales Executive and long-serving Broom ambassador, Paul Pardon, retiring at the end of the year. The announcement was made by Marketing Manager, Jenny Simpson, who said “It is with regret that we announce that, from the end of December 2017, we will no longer be offering pre-owned boats for sale from our marina in Brundall. When Paul expressed his desire to retire, it brought into focus how much we relied on Paul and his knowledge of the secondhand boat market, and also how time consuming it can be to value, list, market and facilitate viewings with prospective customers. It takes not only an experienced broker with a good knowledge of market value, but someone familiar with the range of Broom models, which given our time boatbuilding, is a lot of boats. We would like to thank all our customers for their business, support and friendship over the years. Particular thanks must go to Paul for all his hard work and dedication. No man has driven more miles to view boats, or attended more boat shows. We wish him every happiness in his retirement and feel sure that boats will feature somewhere in his plans.” Paul joined as an apprentice at the age of 16 and is well known by customers and the Owners Club. Mystery boat revealed I think I can help in identifying the ‘Mystery boat’ that appeared in the December Q&A pages. It is almost certainly a Pedro, built, memory suggests, in the West Country and rigged usually as a sailing sloop. We owned a new one from roughly mid-1972 to 1979. They were stout little boats, strongly-built. We had great fun in Chichester Harbour and the Solent with our two little tots onboard, on one memorable cruise she took us down to Poole and Christchurch. There was, I believe, an inboard engine option, but we used a longshaft Seagull Silver Century Plus, I can’t remember the horsepower, but it was more than adequate, especially when motorsailing. There was another version called the Seahawk - same hull plus short centreboard, but different top. Accommodation was tighter in these, but they carried a taller rig and so were much better sailing boats; we saw one such locally just last weekend. Edward Cartner The mystery boat in December’s edition is a Pedro 17 sailing boat. A friend used to have one years ago and I once did a weekend away on it with him. With its keel configuration it won’t sail particularly well upwind but went fine downwind. No idea who built it but I think it was a UK built boat. Donie Herraghty Editor replies: Thank you so much for your emails. I believe you have both indeed cracked it, and within a day of the mag coming out. A few searches for Pedro led me to this owners site, www.seahawk17.org.uk with loads of useful information for the new owner, including a 1975 brochure. It is a John Bennett design that was indeed built in Devon. I am thrilled to be able to pass this information on, on your behalf. As you probably read, the boat is owned by a youngster, and it will be great for him to be able to find out a little more about his project. Thanks once again for taking the time to get in touch. 22

Winterising: Domestic water system

I was interested to see your Editor’s comments on the above subject in the December 2017 issue. I have always been rather dubious about draining the domestic water system as there are inevitably parts of the system that cannot be entirely cleared of water. Consequently I feel more comfortable with flushing through with an antifreeze solution. With regards to the instruction to bypass a calorifier I suspect this has more to do with the volume of antifreeze that would otherwise be required since its contents would massively dilute the incoming stream. I therefore bypass and drain down my calorifier and leave the bypass in place until the system has been recommissioned by flushing through with clean water. I also use the non-toxic antifreeze to flush through the engine raw water system for the same reasons. There are so many points that would need to be individually drained and even then one could not be entirely confident of clearing all the water. Also many of them are too inaccessible for me at my age so the ease of protecting these systems by flushing through with antifreeze outweighs the cost. I have a Seamaster 8-metre based on the Great Ouse in Cambridgeshire. Mike Thompson Editor replies: I can see where you are coming from Mike, and you make some good points. Adding a non-toxic antifreeze to your domestic water system is a sure fire way of protecting it from frost damage. Having said that, a properly drained system is equally good, as long as you do remember to do it properly. I don’t think a small amount of trapped water will cause problems if it freezes, as long as it has space to expand into. Whether you drain or antifreeze, the important thing is to do something. We can easily get lulled into a false sense of security after a few mild winters, and a sudden cold snap is guaranteed to catch a few unprepared boaters out. 24

Moving to Southampton Water

I just spotted the question in the December issue about somebody moving to Hythe and looking for a mooring in Southampton Water. We have just moved house from Totton to Hythe and in March will be moving our boat to Bucklers Hard Yacht Harbour on the Beaulieu River. It is only a five and a half mile drive from home, and only four miles ‘as the crow flies’. It is a delightful and very convenient location. It will also save us £40 a trip as instead of having to negotiate Southampton Water, we will have a much more leisurely (and fuel efficient) cruise down the river to get straight out on the Solent. Alan Weeks Editor replies: Beaulieu is lovely and a good alternative for someone living to the west of Southampton water, especially if they prefer a quieter environment.

Outboard hot water modification

Since sending my email regarding fresh water cooling and heat recovery on Suzuki DF175’s, I have had the boat (Powercat 3000 pictured) lifted for its annual service. During that time the outboard side covers were removed for painting and this exposed the hot water modification in the engine area. A photo of the hot water tank would not be very helpful because it is part of the transom moulding, not readily accessible and there’s not much to look at except two 15mm pipes protruding from the fibreglass. John Fairweather Editor replies: Thanks for the update John. This is fascinating and, with the rise in numbers of outboard powered boats, something we will start to see over here. Lighting faultfinding & replacement

bout 18 months ago I swapped all the lights on our Sealine over to LED. Being on the east coast, we are not always on shore power and a total potential consumption of 130W, or around 10A, could quickly drain the batteries. Most of the Halogen or festoon lamps were easy and cheap to find replacement LEDs for, but in the toilet compartment we had a 12 inch, 12 volt fluorescent fitting. The LED replacement tube for this was around £20, which was more than the rest put together, so I was a bit disappointed when it died soon after. Putting the old fluorescent tube back in, I was dismayed to find the light still did not work. A quick check with a multimeter told me that power was getting

ooooo to the light fitting so something else was amiss. I suspect I brought about the demise by installing an LED tube in a fitting that was not designed for it, so if you have a similar fitting and want to save on power take heed. Here is how I diagnosed the problem, and more importantly, how I rectified it for considerably less than the cost of the LED tube. HOW TO IN 12 STEPS >

1

Remove the two cover screws to gain access to the light fitting. I swapped the LED tube for the old tube just to check 4

A quick search using the details on the unit yielded no result. It looks like this old technology is no longer available 7

A search for a replacement light unit led me inexorably to eBay, where I bagged a 12v LED light fitting for just ÂŁ3.95

2

Unscrew the old light fitting to gain access to the wiring behind

5

I wanted to get inside and see if I could find the fault. This required a few rivets to be drilled out

8

I cut off the connecting plugs from the old light and soldered the leads and plugs to the new one

3

Unplug the light fitting and check for a voltage on the supply cables

6

Once inside, the problem was quickly apparent. A resister on the circuit board had burned out. Was this due to my use of an LED tube? 9

The lights came with attachment clips and a strip of double sided adhesive tape

COST £ The light fitting I used cost me £7.89 for two. I bought a pair, as they were so cheap, that if one fails I have a spare. I also thought I may be able to use two, if one doesn’t offer enough brightness, but this was not the case. So the total cost of this job was a mere £3.95. This was another eBay bargain, just search for 12v strip light for lots of choice.

TIME TAKEN The job itself took around 20 minutes, from start to finish, but I spent much longer diagnosing, dismantling and then Googling for a replacement.

Princess 30DS engine vents

Q Can you offer me some advice as to

how to locate a couple of replacement engine room ventilation louvres for my Princess 30DS? The present ones are in white plastic and looking a bit tired, I have seen some very smart stainless steel ones on another boat in the marina and was wondering if any of your readers would know where to get hold of some.

A Without some specific sizing I can only suggest that you take a look at the

ranges available on the Vetus and ASAP websites. They have plenty of choice, in both Stainless and anodized aluminium, so I am sure that you should be able to find something suitable. It may be a stretch to expect to find something exactly the same size, so you may have to enlarge the opening and create new fixing holes.

Garmin and Navionics

Q I have just heard that Garmin have

purchased the Navionics company, which immediately made me wonder what will happen when I want to update the Navionics Cartography that my Raymarine C series uses. Will I still be able to do that, or will Navionics cartography be reserved only for Garmin users?

A Luckily your question came in the day before I visited the Marine Equipment Trade Show (METS) in Amsterdam, where Navionics were exhibiting. I put your question to the MD of Navionics UK and he was quick to assure me that “Navionics would continue to offer its products and services to all marine electronics industry leaders with the same confidentiality, and increased enthusiasm and commitment. In other words, you have nothing to worry about. 30

Duo props for KAD42powered Sealine 255

Q After a nightmare of a season,

which included swapping the AD41 for a KAD42 in my Sealine 255, I finally managed to get it all working again and what a transformation. You can see why manufacturers must have been in ‘seventh heaven’ when Volvo added the compressor to their diesel engines. The final thing is to add some new props, which brings me to my question regarding Volvo’s new J series propellers. The dealer recommends a direct change, of say B4 to J4, although most people who seem to have done this find a drop in top speed, increased revs at cruising and the need to pull back on the throttle to prevent over revving. Acceleration is, however, improved, as is slow speed handling.

A When the J series (pictured) was launched, Volvo Penta stated that to replace A series, you went like for like, eg A4 to J4. However, with B series, they did suggest a one size difference, eg B4 to J5, which would bear out the findings you are hearing about.

Sea-going cruisers inland

Q I have worked overseas for the last seven years

and I am now planing my return to the UK and retirement in April 2019. My wife and I are very fortunate to live in Worcester on the River Severn and prior to moving abroad we owned a 6m cruiser with outboard motor. Grandchildren have since arrived, the bank balance has improved and we are now investigating our next boat for when we return. With a budget of circa £100k we have viewed many older sea going boats, as the interiors are luxurious with plenty of outdoor space, but my concern is that the engines are far too powerful for the inland waterways. While living on the river I used to see many of these sea cruisers pass my house at 3 knots with plenty of white smoke following behind. We have also turned our attention to steel hulled Dutch inland cruisers but, while spacious, the interiors of the older models look dated so we would need to increase our budget and purchase a newer model. Then a few weeks ago I found your magazine while searching for boats and I have had the pleasure of spending my spare time reading them, starting from the first edition. I’m now reading June 2014 and the article on the Princess 435, where you said “the 435 has also been very well received inland, where fuel running costs are relatively low and where it has attracted buyers who want a comfortable and capable sea boat for those occasional sea and estuary forays”. This is exactly why we looked at the sea cruisers initially. My question is, how suitable are the motor cruisers (which are built to travel at 20 to 30 knots) for the inland waterways eg. River Severn and Gloucester canal.

A You have come up against the age-old dilemma, and the reason that inland

waterways are stuffed full of boats with powerful engines and hulls designed for planing speeds. Quite simply, you can get an awful lot of boat for your money, and the choice is huge. It is true that diesel engines like to be worked, and can suffer from being lightly loaded, but much of the smoke problems you see are often quickly cured with an occasional blast down the estuary so, assuming that you can live with it when on the river, this should not put you off. As long as there are no physical restrictions, such as width and air draft issues, I wouldn’t worry at all about keeping a boat like the Princess 435 on the inland waterways and, if you ever do decide to go tidal, you will have a very capable boat to do it in. 32

Sealine S37 wiper blades

Q I need to source a couple of

new wiper blades for my Sealine S37. I have tried car spares outlets, but I suspect the metal in them will rust in a matter of days on a boat. The ones on there now are all plastic, but I can’t seem to find them anywhere.

A As a Sealine owner you should visit the Seabridge

Marine website and add it to your bookmarks. They have all manner of original specification and Sealine related parts, including the wiper blades you are looking for. Here is the link for the Sealine S37 wiper blades. We note that they also offer stainless steel versions, which might be useful.

Viking Sedan 32

Q We are looking at buying a Viking Sedan 32. It is a lovely boat, but we’ve

heard of a problem with Viking gelcoat that has resulted in legal action in the United States. Do you have any advice?

A There are at least three boat manufacturers, that I am aware of, that use

the Viking name. Viking Yacht Company in the US, makers of prestige US sportsfishers, were involved in a lawsuit related to gelcoat problems a few years back. If the model name is correct, the boat you are looking at was built by Viking Marin in Turkey, 32 pictured. If that is the case, then there are no issues that I am aware of regarding gelcoat. The other Viking is, of course, Viking Mouldings in the UK, manufactures of affordable inland and estuary cruisers. Again I have heard of no gelcoat problems with these boats. early June 2013, leave Brundall with Colin, my longstanding sailing pal, as crew, nip down to Lowestoft, point the boat 90⁰ and fetch up 10 hours later in Ijmuiden. Then, having let my wife know we had arrived, she would fly out to Schiphol and get to Amsterdam. Meanwhile we would move up the North Sea canal, find a berth in Amsterdam, near to the station, and await her arrival. Colin would then depart, reversing her route. Simple. The reality was that the weather was so awful we decided to stay in Brundall until we could see signs of improvement. On a wet and blustery 15th June we set off to Lowestoft, via Oulton Broad Yacht Station where we waited to leave the broads and transit Mutford Lock, the road bridge lift and rail swing bridge into Lake Lothing. Here you enter a contrasting and depressing landscape, industrial dereliction seems to dominate Lake Lothing. Although the East Coast has an offshore wind farm industry, seemingly it has done little to stimulate economic regeneration in this part of Suffolk. When you arrive at the Royal Norfolk and Suffolk Yacht Club near the harbour entrance, having first waited for the adjacent road bridge to lift, it quickly

lightens the mood. The following morning the weather prospects were far from ideal, we felt it was far too small a weather window for a 10-hour passage. As an ex ‘raggie’ I am still coming to terms with the difference between the conditions you can safely and comfortably cruise a motor boat, compared to a yacht. Another night in port and the morning saw another small weather window allowing us to make the relatively short trip to Harwich, and thus the abandoning of our simple plan. Going to Harwich, we felt, gave us a better range of options, depending on the weather prospects. Whilst on passage I suspected my VHF was not transmitting beyond a mile or so. A call to Harwich VTS confirmed this was the case when I did finally make contact using the hand-held back up. We arrived at Shotley Marina, refuelled and then delved into various web weather sites (my personal favourite being www. passageweather.com) to discover we faced more of the same. Meanwhile a call to R&J Marine Electronics confirmed they Leaving the Broads behind, Murlough passes through the bridges at Lowestoft

were able to look at the VHF problem the following morning, provided we moved Murlough to Levington. They efficiently sorted the problem and at a fair price. Early the following day we set off to cross the Thames Estuary, making for Ramsgate. This was the new plan, get to Ramsgate then cross the TSS (Traffic Separation Scheme) at the pinch point and head for Dunkerque and change crew there. The wind had gone down to nothing and had been replaced by moderate to poor visibility with a glassy flat sea. But again, there was the promise of strengthening winds soon. As we wove our way through the sandbanks and channels, and the weak sun started to break through, it all became very ethereal and Turneresque. By the time we were at Elbow, off North foreland, the mist had gone, cleared by the strengthening breeze. At Ramsgate we refuelled again then went in search of more charts and a pilot book for the Belgian waterways. Ramsgate Harbour now seems to be the provider of ‘commuter services’ out to the wind farms, consequently it is extremely busy first

thing in the morning and late afternoon. More passage planning and weather checking was followed by an early night in readiness for an early start. Upon calling Dover Coastguard for a traffic report the next morning, we were advised that the Channel was very busy, and visibility was down to less than a quarter of a mile in places. However, if the weather pattern followed the previous morning, we were confident that conditions would improve by the time we got to the TSS. From NE Goodwin we started keeping

Along the canal between Dunkerque and Nieuwpoort we encountered this card operated bridge

a very close eye on our AIS targets in the TSS. The tide swept us down to S Falls (the start of the southbound lane of the TSS), rather faster than we anticipated. We throttled back to 5 knots to wait for a group of eight ships to pass before making a dash across the lane before the next group arrived. Crossing at this point, once you are clear of the southbound lane you are pretty well straight into the first northbound lane. A minor speed adjustment allowed us to clear the northbound traffic without too much delay and continue over the Sandettie bank into the second northbound lane. Crossing the bank allows time to adjust

speed again to clear shipping. Once you are at Ruytingen SW marker you are out of the TSS and hopefully have timed your passage so you now pick up the north going stream to Dunkerque. At this point the wind sprang up from the north, bringing driving rain, closing down the visibility and delvering wind against tide to create an uncomfortable sea. A call to Dunkerque VTS and permission to enter was granted, a police launch came abeam and gave us a friendly. We had arrived in France. We made our way to Port du Grand Large which, despite its size, is not staffed full time, so if you cannot make VHF contact don’t be surprised. Pick a space on the long visitor pontoon opposite the fishing boats and, in true French style, someone will turn up sometime. It is a long walk to the centre of the town from here and facilities are more French camp site than marina. The following day, a call to Dunkerque VTS organised our transit through Ecluse Trystram and the lift bridges to Bassin de la Marine, with good facilities including a laundry.

38

January 2018

Part of the decision to go to Dunkerque, was easy crew transfer. The difficulties started when my wife tried to book a foot passenger ticket online. Nowhere on the DFDS website did it say they do not carry foot passengers on this ferry. The problem was eventually resolved by us hiring a car and changing crew at Calais. Most of the references indicate that you can buy a day licence for the Canal de Fournes, which is enough time to get to the Belgian border. At the VNF office my request resulted in receiving a handwritten piece of paper torn off a writing pad and no money changed hands, strange, we thought. Dunkerque VTS ensured we were efficiently exited from the marina and harbour complex. At Ecluse 4, the lock activation mechanism failed to activate, but fortunately a boat approaching from the other side triggered it, and we were off

up the canal toward Belgium, with the sun finally beginning to shine. I am not sure precisely where we entered Belgium as there is little evidence of the former border control. However, the delightful little town of Veurne was definitely Belgium, and it was here that I reported our arrival to the Havenmeister and purchased our licence for Belgian Waterways. I was expecting a long and fraught procedure, but a check of our passports, ships registration certificate, the handing over of €40 and we were officially “in”. It is worth lingering in picturesque Veurne with its amazing variety of shops, bars and charming inhabitants. There are alongside moorings on the canal with water and electric, but limited space in the small harbour. The waterway continues to be largely rural and we made our way toward Nieuwpoort, where we elected

From here our route took us toward Ghent, where we took the Ringvaart around the outskirts of Ghent into the Ghent Terneuzen Canal that would take us to the Westerschelde estuary. This waterway is huge, and we were mesmerized by the size and volume of traffic. It’s not a pretty waterway, but interesting in its own way. An overnight stop at the very small WSV Neusen Jachthaven allowed us to acquire local tide information, and plan our passage across the estuary to Vlissengen. There is a very busy three lock complex at Terneuzen, but we were called straight in along with two massive barges. A couple of hours at speed saw us at Vlissingen and straight into the lock. Willemstad is very bijou, and the town quay is extremely popular with the rich and beautiful, so we moored in the De Batterij marina next door. At weekends it also seems to be a mecca for old sports cars and classic motorbikes. From Willemstad, the Hollandisch Diep leads into the Dordtsche Kil and you’re left in no doubt that you are on the main north-south barge route. Dordrecht is a very busy inland port, at the junction of several key waterways, yet it proved to be an unexpectedly fascinating stopover. • Visa cards are not widely accepted in the Netherlands, so check before purchase to avoid embarrassment. Be prepared to use cash. • Fuel prices vary widely so ask around (1.20Euro to 1.60 per litre). • Don’t expect the locals to follow the CEVNI rules especially waiting for lights at bridges/locks. • Make sure your VHF has ATIS enabled and has Ch 31, used by many jachthavens. • If you are cruising shorthanded, use a single line from a midships cleat so one person can quickly secure the boat in a lock whilst you sort out any other lines required.

CLASSIC CRUISERS

a complete guide to the best boats on the used market

Fairline Targa 34 T his year, British builder Fairline celebrated its 50th anniversary, and announced a new 33ft model for 2019. We thought there was no better time to examine one of its best-selling sportscruisers. The Targa 34. The 34’s origins lie in the 80’s, and with Fairline’s first Targa model, the 33 (19841991). Designed by the Brit-sportscruiser guru, Bernard Olesinski, Fairline had the Med in its sights with this boat, with its two cabins, 4-6 berths, a large sunseeking cockpit and fast, offshore cruising abilities. Fast forward 13 years and this iconic cruiser was being used as a basis for one of

Fairline’s new entry level, two-cabin family boat. The 34 saw Olesinski and Fairline’s design team drawing on the success of the Targa 33 (MkI & II) and 31, and adding the same external lines and styling as the very latest generation of Targas, the 37 and 48. The result was a sleek and stylish 36ft sportscruiser, balancing performance, cockpit and accommodation. The 34 made its debut in 1997 and was offered with a choice of twin diesel or petrol sterndrives, delivering speeds of up to 38 knots. Down below it offered the conventional two cabin layout, providing 4-6 berths. It did, however, have a rather

unusual V-shaped twin forward berth with optional infill. Unfortunately, it seems this cabin configuration proved unpopular, as two years later, in 1999, Fairline launched a Mark II model featuring an offset double in the forward cabin. Fairline also gave the model something of a makeover, with a few other significant layout changes, and some minor styling upgrades. The Targa 34’s main rival at the time came from fellow British builder, Sealine, with its S34 (1998-2007). The narrower Sealine offers exactly the same two-cabin layout, with an offset forward double and very similar engine options.

By the mid ‘00s, the 34 had become the smallest model of the Fairline range, but its success continued on until it was phased out in 2006. Fairline manufactured 280 of these boats during its 10 year production run. Today, twenty years since its launch, we think the 34’s exterior would still not look out of place at a boat show. They certainly seem to have held their value, and have earned an excellent reputation as well. With a broad used price range of £70k to £150k, is this modern-looking, high quality sportscruiser good value? We got onboard a 2003 example to find out.

Interior After descending steeply into the cabin, via the moulded companionway steps, you will find yourself in a very private and impressive central saloon area. It is an inviting space that is refined by areas of glossy wood surfaces, contrasting

light cabin linings and plump, bolstered upholstery. The saloon area also offers an impressive 6ft 3in of headroom. The dinette area, found to port, is cosy and functional. Its shallow U-shaped settee seats 3-4 people for dining and is suitable for two lounging. In most instances, this will also convert into a narrow double. On Mark II versions, the settee is noticeably smaller and shallower, but it does have a clever trick up its sleeve. A small ‘nesting stool’, with a flip-over cushion top, pulls out from the aft-most seat base and provides a much needed additional seat at the small table. You will find lined lockers in the settee bases, which on the Mk I may enclose a drinks cabinet. There is also plenty of sectioned storage here too, with a line of glossy wood lockers overhead. Saloon light and ventilation is provided by

The saloon has some clever features, including storage in the stairs and a concealed extra seat

the surrounding opening portholes and a small, semi-circular, opening hatch in the forward cabin companionway. It is on the starboard side that you really notice the differences between Mk I and Mk II models. Most evident is the galley format, which is located centrally, ahead of the curved aft toilet compartment, and is L-shaped on the Mk I, and reversed on the Mk II, with a stylish aft corner galley with the toilet compartment forward. Both galley formats are a good size, but have their pros and cons. The galley on the Mk I has the edge, with slightly more worktop space, while the galley on a Mk II is tucked away in the corner and far less intrusive. Each has a dedicated cutlery drawer, a single metal sink with small adjoining draining area, a good size, 65-litre fridge and moderate storage below the worktop. Boats were fitted with a full gas oven and a two-burner hob as standard, with a microwave and two-

ring ceramic hob fitted as an option. Part of the companionway steps hinge up to reveal useful integral moulded storage lockers. Again, a bank of lockers provide eye-level storage and disguise the boats main electrics switch panel. For cruising independence, a 4 or 7 Kva generator was fitted in the engine bay, and priced respectively at ÂŁ7k and 9k in 2004. The toilet compartments on both boats offer a generous 6ft headroom and feature a sea toilet, a moulded wash basin unit, vanity storage and a separate shower control. The compartment on the Mark I is noticeably larger, and has the convenience of a separate shower stall with a revolving door. The compartment on the Mk II has a large floor area for showering and a curtain to mask the door. It also has a unique, mirrored, swivelling vanity cupboard. As mentioned previously, another crucial difference between models is in

Master cabins on MkII models have a space saving, fixed, angled double and a smaller saloon dinette

the forward cabin. The Mk I has a twin V berth, whereas the Mk II has a space saving offset double. The V-berth cabin has a generous amount of floor space between the berths, and a good-size wardrobe each side. Its berths are short but, with an infill, convert into a large double. It is an unusual format which is quite versatile and liked by present owners. Having a fixed double forward makes more sense for cruising couples and

families, but it’s a choice that is usually determined by budget. In the creation of the offset double cabin, Fairline sacrificed some saloon space by adding a new curved bulkhead. There were also some useful features and refinements added. Inside, the angled double berth really dominates the space. There are carpeted steps leading up each side of the bed, a single wardrobe on the port side, large tiered lockers built into the bed base and, for getting ready, a small vanity area on the starboard side with a mirror and small shelf. Cabin sideboards envelope the berth and offer integral lockers for bits and pieces, and there is a small open cupboard with light switches at the head of the bed. Examine the lacquered wood sideboards and faux suede cabin linings, as these could be suffering from their close proximity to the porthole each side. The cabin offers 6ft 1in of headroom and a reasonably sized changing area. The berth’s angled, odd

shape may create a bit of a dilemma for those over 6ft. It measures 6ft 3in from bow to stern and its angled ‘lying’ length varies between 5ft 4in and 5ft 7in. Entry to the boats twin-bedded mid cabin is on the port side. Immediately inside the door is a changing area with headroom of 5ft 11in and a vanity storage unit with an optional wash basin. As you stoop to go further inside, and under the cockpit sole, you will find a two-seater settee at the foot of the berths, with a fairly large corner wardrobe beyond. The two berths extend thwartships with a footwell between them and a headrest and shelving at the starboard end. Each bunk is 2ft 3in wide and well over 6ft in length. The aft-most bunk is three inches shorter, at 6ft 3in, due to the wardrobe. Under this particular berth you will find the boat’s 45-gallon water tank, while under the forward bunk there is ample lined storage for bedding and clothing. A double berth infill was a £445 extra in this cabin. While light and ventilation is provided by portholes, including one into the cockpit, it is a quite dark cabin when unlit. It is, however, an excellent size cabin, ideal for youngsters and also for occasional overnighting guests. Interiors are finished in a choice of two

lacquered real wood veneers, American Cherry or Honey Maple. It is worth inspecting wood surfaces for any marks, and also to check the condition of the lacquer, as this can go cloudy as a result of heat or sun exposure. Two hatches in the saloon floor reveal the shower tray and toilet inlet/outlet seacocks. Owners will be quick to point out that on MkI models waste sink water drains directly overboard, while on MkII examples this water goes into the shower tray sump, which could prove noisy at night. Whilst exploring inside lockers, it is worth checking the bondings, where seating and bunk bases are joined to the hull. Very rarely such bondings can come adrift, which could be the result of a boat being driven hard in rough seas. Cockpit & helm Step through the starboard transom gate and you are greeted with a very spacious,

social and functional, two-level cockpit. Everything is well proportioned, with excellent headroom throughout and generous space to move about in safety and undercover. Immediately to port is a rather large, U-shaped dinette seating area, easily capable of seating 4-6 people. As with most sportscruisers, the sloping aft section of the canopy does leave the persons seated aft somewhat stooped. This area converts into a large sunpad, with the family-sized table top and a cushion used as an infill. You will find draining lockers under most of the seating, with an integral gas locker under the port seat. Opposite the dinette area is a rather unique feature, a single angled bucket seat with storage in its cylindrical-shaped base. It is the boat equivalent of a comfy ‘grandad-style armchair’, and is bound to become someone’s favourite place to sit. Moving forward to the upper level of the cockpit, on the starboard side is a

52

January 2018

Its spacious and social cockpit makes use of the 11ft beam. The helm is compact but well designed

moulded unit that incorporates a grabrail and Perspex cup holders at the front, and has a deep lift-top draining coolbox inside. This moulding continues forward to incorporate the single supportive helm seat with its lifting bolster. Here, a higher backrest would be useful for better support. At the helm, the curved, one pane windscreen provides plenty of protection. There is good visibility in both seated and standing positions for those of moderate height, albeit the best driving experience is standing. For those who are shorter, the far panel of dials may prove marginally obstructive when seated. The characteristic elliptical side windows inside their chunky mullions offer both protection and greater comparative visibility, which is particularly useful when the canopy is up. Early models will usually have green-tinted glass screens and matching colour Perspex cup holders in the cockpit.

The moulded, two-tier helm console has various coloured panels that incorporate dials, navigation equipment and switches, and is separated by a large chart storage area. There is a panel to the right where the throttles fall easily to hand. Differences between models can be seen in the console panelling, the placement of the nav equipment and also colour. On the MkI, a chartplotter, namely a Raymarine RL70, is bracket-mounted at chart table level, while the MkII console is moulded to accommodate this particular portraitshaped plotter. The latter is slightly cluttered yet well engineered and stylishly decorated in navy panelling. Space for a larger chartplotter here is limited, but there is just enough space for a modern 7-inch landscape display. Opposite the helm is a large L-shaped seating area, which doubles as a spacious and comfy chaise lounge. The area is capable of seating three or more people,

and allows a whole family to travel together on this upper level. The main, thwartships part of the seating provides a central forward-facing seat for the copilot. However, being set slightly further back from the helm position, it may prove frustrating for seeing out, pot spotting, for example, whilst at speed. Under this seat is a bucket-size storage locker. On this boat, you’ll be spending most of your time in the cockpit, and, if you are intending to boat in UK climes, diesel heating with an outlet in the cockpit is a great feature to look out for. With its vast covered cockpit, there is a great deal of canvas to maintain, so ensure that this is in good order. Pay close attention to the condition and practicalities of using the front windscreen panels, as these will be in regular use. Be aware also that canopies are prone to shrinkage, so check for a good fit. On deck The side decks are a good size and have a toerail with a curved top edge. The deck width does vary in places, measuring 5½ inches next to the cockpit area,

On deck it feels like a bigger boat. The foredeck is enclosed by high guardrails and feels safe

and widening to 6 inches briefly before narrowing at the bow. The decks are enclosed by chunky thigh-height, solid guardrails that echo Fairline’s stylish curved window line, tapering off at the radar arch. At this point an extra rail on the upper flat section of the radar arch would be a useful feature. With the cockpit dinette seating to port, getting in and out of the cockpit is notably easier on the starboard side, where there is a moulded step to the side deck. Note there are rails on the inner edge of the radar arch, which can only be used when the canopy side screens are rolled up or removed. Sunpad cushions were available as a £1200 extra and slot neatly in the moulded void in the foredeck. Here, feature turquoise-coloured Perspex drinks holders also appeared on later models. Most boats will be fitted with an electric anchor winch, and, at the bow, there is a small chain locker. Sadly, this is no way big enough for fenders, but luckily there is storage elsewhere for these. The boat has an excellent bathing platform for its size and, despite its elegant transom design, it is still quite an easy boat to board from alongside. Built into the transom is a liferaft locker and a transom shower. Two hatches in the bathing

platform itself conceal a fender and rope storage locker and a bathing ladder. Most boats will be finished with teak decking. This can lift through water ingress and could prove expensive to replace. Hull and Handling With the handling experience often described as impeccable, agile and stunning, with plenty of power, the Targa 34 is a nimble and enjoyable boat to drive. It has a variable-vee hull shape, with a deep-V entry. Being fairly light, at around 6000kgs, the hull shape provides a good balance of performance and seakeeping ability. Throw in Fairline’s renowned build quality, and it is a gem that is reassuring if caught out in bad weather. Manoeuvring a twin sterndrive boat at close quarters takes practice, but once mastered the 34 is an easy boat to handle. A 4hp bowthruster was a popular in-build extra costing £3-4k, and brings piece of mind while learning the ropes, and a get out of jail card when things don’t go to plan. Inspect the hull thoroughly, paying close

attention to the bathing platform and the longitudinal engine vents that cover the mid cabin portholes. While a handful of 34’s left the production line with standard white hulls, the majority of models you will see today will have an attractive ‘optional extra’ coloured gelcoat strip along the hull. Typically, Mk I models will have an emerald green colour, known as ‘Aqua’ in Fairline’s ‘90s brochures, and Mark II models have a navy-blue hull. Green hulls are best described as Marmite, appealing to some buyers and not others. Coloured hulls do however need to be looked after with a regular polish to keep their lustre. Engines When the 34 was first announced in 1996 it was being offered with a choice of Volvo diesel and petrol sterndrive options. The two diesel options were 200hp AD41s, which according to Fairline, offered 3033 knots, or 230hp KAD42s giving 32-36 knots. For petrol power, there was a choice of a 5.0 litre giving 31-35 knots or a 5.8

55

Most models will be fitted with KAD300 or KAD44 engines, and normally coupled to Volvo’s DP-G or DPS drives

litre providing 34-38 knots. By September 2002 there was a choice of four diesels, 200hp AD41s (£149,416), 230hp KAD43s (£154,100), 260hp KAD44s (£162,520) and finally 285hp KAD300 (£167,379). Brochures show the KAD44 delivering 37-38 knots, and 39 knots for KAD300 models, both options making it a desirably quick boat. Petrol options were upped in horsepower, with two 5.7-litre options, a GS and GSI providing 250 and 280hp. Of the 280 built, Fairline tell us that the majority of 34’s will have either KAD44 or KAD300 engines fitted. Today a boat fitted with KAD44s and KAD300s will cruise at speeds between 25-30 knots. You should expect cruising speeds in the low to mid 20s for boats fitted with the smaller 200hp and 230hp engines. Petrol-powered versions are rare to the UK. This is because the rare few that were built were usually shipped to the Med, the United States and other warmer climes, but also because of the higher running costs. Engine access is via a large motorised hatch in the cockpit floor. Ideally the three dinette cushions need to be lifted out of

the way for this to happen, with the back and side seating bases (these are on legs) lifting with the hatch. It is worth checking surrounding cushions and fibreglass edges for any engine hatch damage or tears. The hatch is controlled by a button up on the dash at the helm and it takes roughly 30 seconds to lift, which can be quite slow if you are in a seaway, and of course is reliant on the boats battery power. The large hatch reveals the majority of the engines and usually offers plenty of space to get down in front of them, where there is a flat standing area for servicing. However, some boats may have a removable moulded storage box for the cockpit table or a generator fitted here, restricting access. Access to the back of the engines is a challenge, as they are quite tight to the cockpit sole, making it almost impossible to get to the grease nipples for the steering arms. Here remote greasers are highly recommended. Otherwise the engine bay is very neat, practical and impressively engineered. The hot water calorifier is to port, as are the batteries in dedicated moulded boxes. You will also find the

56

January 2018

boats fuel filters easily accessible and mounted on the forward engine bulkhead on the starboard side. An additional hatch ahead of the engine bay hinges to reveal the boats single 125-gallon marine grade alloy fuel tank. The lower cockpit bucket seat restricts immediate access to this, but latches in its base allow it to be pulled out of the way. You will also find an inspection cover inside the seat which provides access to the fuel cocks. Where possible, inspect the tank for signs of corrosion and follow your nose for indications of leaks. When it comes to running costs of a twin diesel version, fuel consumption should be around 1.8-2 mpg at cruising speeds. As with any boat you need to consider service costs and availability

in your area. Volvo Penta spares are easy to source and savings can be made in doing some or all of the servicing work yourself. Engine valve clearances will need to be checked regularly, engineers will recommend every 200 hours, and this is particularly important for boats fitted with the 24 valve KAD300 and KAD44 engines. Conclusion The 34 is a true gem that packs a real punch. It is an ideal family-sized cruiser that is not only good looking and has great features, it also delivers an exhilarating performance. Add to that a broad spectrum of prices and it is a boat that is truly accessible.

OWNERS REPORT

Peter Mansion Fairline Targa 34 Our first boat was a Fairline Targa 30, that we purchased new in 1999 and ran for two fantastic seasons in the Solent. A couple of years ago we decided that it was time to get back on the water. Having a limited budget, we concluded that a boat share would mean that we could buy the boat that we wanted, without breaking the bank. I’ve always been a Fairline fan, so it was inevitable that our next boat would be another Fairline (despite friends encouraging me to look at other brands). Having looked at a few boats both in Spain and the UK, my two partners and I purchased a 2003 Targa 34 fitted with 260hp KAD44 engines. Andiamo (‘Let’s Go’ in Italian) has a navy hull with dark cherry woodwork and a cream leather interior. Being a MkII, it has an offset double berth in the forward cabin and twin single berths in the mid cabin. Andiamo sleeps 4 comfortably but we’ve

Peter’s first boat was a Solent-based Targa 30

had 6 onboard for a weekend. Compared to similar-aged boats her hours were slightly high (650), but this was no concern as I consider condition to be paramount. She’s been well used and cared for and, having spent all her life in the UK, her topsides remain bright and glossy and overall she is in great condition. Since owning Andiamo we have had a comprehensive service of the outdrives and engines, including valve clearances, injectors and new fuel lines. As the boat was destined for the Med, where she now lies, we had A/C fitted. To keep costs down, we tend to use independent rather than franchised Volvo engineers. Fairline claimed a top speed of 3739 knots and Andiamo managed 36.2 knots flat out on her sea trial. We don’t really have a preferred cruising speed, preferring to vary our speed depending on conditions. Anywhere between 25 and 30 knots seems to suit the boat fine and I hope to get around 2mpg. Overall, we’re very pleased with the boat. The Targa 34 is well built, has a great turn of speed, a large sociable cockpit and accommodation well suited to a couple or small family. We hope to spend many happy seasons cruising the Med.

tested Mini Plug-in heater These were brought to my attention just before I went ahead with the Eberspacher installation, but I took the plunge anyway as we still will use electric heating when we are on shore power. At the moment we have a single 3kw fan heater that sits on the floor in the main cabin, taking up space and leaving a trailing lead trip hazard. While it is great for heating the main cabin, it never seems to have the reach to warm the smaller spaces, even with doors left open. These tiny little plug in fan heaters are available from a wide variety of sources, and in a few slightly different models. Some, like ours, allow the plug to be rotated, which I think is a very valuable feature on boats where the plug sockets are often mounted close to surfaces above or below. This spinning

plug allows the unit to be used in different orientations, depending upon what space is available. You can also get models with the two pin continental plug, which would be useful if your boat has these fitted. The price seems to range from £12 on Internet auction sites, to £40 from reputable hardware type stores. Whether the more expensive ones are significantly better or not, I cannot say. The link at the end is for the one I bought at £15. I was going to buy a more expensive ‘in store’ version, but found that the plug didn’t swivel, which ruled it out for me. Now the heater is only 350w, so it will never heat a whole boat, or even a

large cabin space, but where we thought it would be useful would be for our small mid cabin, which is where I tested it. On a chilly morning, the ambient temperature in the cabin at the start of our test was 5.8°C. I ran the heater on full power for one hour, with the door to the cabin closed, but the vents to the main cabin open, and took temperature measurements every 15 minutes. The heater’s display shows the thermostat setting, and the unit will turn the heat off, although leave the fan running, when that temperature is reached. The fan has two speeds, high and low, the latter of which seemed to create hotter air leaving the unit, albeit at a slower rate for what seemed a neutral benefit. The grill face gets very hot, at 10cm I recorded an expelled air temperature of 75°C, so there is a burn risk for children or pets, and you wouldn’t want to leave anything touching it. I purposely blocked the air intake to check the overheat function,

and it switched the heat off within two Value 4/5 seconds. During our Usability 3/5 Performance 2/5 test, the unit ran at between 240w and 270w when heating, although I saw peak draw as high as 750w during start-up. tested and only the fan is running. It is not the quietest of units, sounding a bit like a low powered hair dryer, but not so noisy that you would rather be cold than listen to it. I found the thermostat to be somewhat optimistic, switching very reliably on and off at 15°C when set to 18°, but once you know that you can adjust it accordingly. I initially thought that the red glow that you can see in some pictures was the elements overheating. It is, in fact, a red LED that seems to have no purpose other than providing a red glow. So to the test. Our cabin on the S28 is approximately 4.7m3 and, starting from a temperature of 5.8°C, the heater brought the temperature up to 15°C in an hour, with 15 minute readings of 8.5°, 10.8° and 13.1° in between. I have no doubt that it would have continued to rise further, given a longer test, but an hour seemed about as long as anyone would want to wait to feel some benefit. When I entered the cabin at the end, having been standing in the unheated saloon, the difference was very noticeable. 15°C may not seem hot, but coming in from 6°C it felt positively tropical. I think it is fair to say that these little heaters will never be enough to be a primary heater, unless you have a single, very small cabin, but they do work well to take the chill out of a space, and even increase the temperature enough to make it comfortable. The fact that they are so small (16cm H x 8.5cm W x 11cm D), light and don’t have any trailing leads just

15°C might not seem very warm after an hour, but, coming in from 6°C outside, it is a noticeable improvement and the temperature was still rising

adds to their usefulness. OK, it origin and price might lead you to suspect that it wont last very long, but mine has been running now for about five hours in total and so far, so good. It actually appears rather well made, although I wouldn’t leave it running unattended, which makes the timer function that provides a run time of one to 12 hours rather redundant, but then I wouldn’t leave any fan operated heater unattended so, on that score, this one is no different. Padders Padotics With the London Boat Show just around the corner I thought it would be a good time to share with you, one of my Southampton Boat Show purchases. It’s not really boat related, although it is very much ‘boat show appropriate’. You see, at boat shows, I tend to be on my feet all day, and clock up a staggering mileage. So much so, that at the end of the day I can literally barely walk. This is, undoubtedly, not helped by wearing deck shoes, which are not really designed for this sort of use. It was no surprise then that I was drawn to the stand selling Padders Padotics insoles. After standing on a special mat that looks at the specific pressure points of my feet, I was given a ‘prescription’ insole, best suited to my needs. The difference was fantastic. Yes I still ached at the end of the day, and dancing was probably still out of

PROJECT BOAT

PROJECT Fairline Vixen

T

hings have been a bit quiet on the project boat front for a couple of months, mainly due to simply not having enough time to get stuck in, but I managed to find a day spare this month and re-acquainted myself with the semidismantled mass of metal parts that is the Volvo AQ151 engine. When I left it, I had removed the sump to inspect the bottom end, and declared that things looked reasonably positive. The bearing surfaces appeared good and the only real fly in the ointment was that the non running surfaces of the crankshaft, con rods and even the block itself were covered in an oily rust. While this wasn’t detrimental to the long term health of the engine, the oily

rust particles would make a great grinding paste, as the fresh oil gradually washed it away if I just left it in place. This would shorten the engine lifespan significantly, so the only answer would be to strip the engine down completely to allow everything to be cleaned properly. To remove the crankshaft I needed to undo and remove all of the main bearing carriers and the con rod bearing caps. The crankshaft is also held in place at each end of the block by an aluminium seal carrier, which in turn is bolted to the block with steel bolts. In anticipation of having to remove these I had been giving them a regular squirt with releasing agent, which did the trick. I was expecting to snap more

66

January 2018

Carrying on from where I left off, the crankshaft was removed, after undoing the seal plates

bolts than I would undo, but every single one came undone easily from both ends. Despite this, both plates were still holding fast, and it turned out that I had missed the fact that each of them also had a pair of metal dowels fixing them in place. These hadn’t been given the release agent treatment, as I simply hadn’t seen them under the surface corrosion, and they were stuck fast. Having to be very careful, so as to avoid breaking the aluminium plate, each of these dowels were eventually persuaded to let go after a long session of heating, spraying with release agent and very, very gentle prying. Now I faced another problem. The forward seal plate could not be removed because the crankshaft cambelt pulley was still in place. I had tried to remove this last time, but gave up after finding it stuck firm on the shaft, with little to no access behind it. Now I had to tackle it. Obviously a puller would be the ideal tool for this, but none of the ones in my toolbox were quite right. There was very little space behind to get the pulley claws in place, and the rear belt retaining plate was also

in the way. Drastic action was required, so I sacrificed the retaining plate, having first checked the price and availability of a new one, and then took my smallest puller to the grinder and modified the claws to make them small enough to get behind the pulley. Just to be sure it had the best possible grip, I also tightened a large hose clamp around the puller’s legs to ensure that it didn’t slip off. After just a couple of turns of the spanner, the pulley popped off. I could now lift the crankshaft out of the engine and push each of the pistons out

Some heat was needed to release the aluminium seal plates from their steel locating dowels

The cambelt pulley was finally removed, allowing the crankshaft and pistons to be taken out

of the cylinders. All I had left to do was to slide out the countershaft, which runs the distributor, fuel pump and oil pump, and the engine was finally fully dismantled. I hadn’t initially expected to go this far, but these jobs often have a way of becoming more involved than expected so, if you are undertaking something like this, it may be best to just accept that a total strip down is likely to be needed, before you even start. As parts are stripped down, it is often very important to mark where they have come from. The pistons, conrods and main bearing carriers are already marked with their position, but items like the shell

bearings need to go back in the same place and the same orientation if they are to be reused. I have put aside a bench where I can lay parts out in a manner that makes it easy to replace them in the same position. With the engine, or at least the block and bottom end, in pieces, I could start the process of cleaning and rebuilding. There was very little evidence of carbon build up on the pistons, giving us another clue that this engine has seen very little action, but the piston crowns were mechanically cleaned with a scraper and some wet and dry to remove what there was. The sump pan was wiped out of the thick oily sludge

Unmarked parts should be laid out in a way that ensures they go back in the same position. The piston crowns were mechanically cleaned 68

that remained after draining the oil. The outside and the mounting flange were a little corroded in places, and the paint was peeling quite badly. To save having to wash it out twice, I decided to give the sump a good going over with a flap disk to remove all the rust and loose paint. Then, to protect the bare metal, I gave it a decent coat of primer. I could have removed all of the old paint for an ‘out of the factory’ finish but where it was still in good condition, and well adhered to the metal, I left it in place and painted over it. The aim is more about getting the engine running properly, than to make it look like new again. The primer will be recoated after the sump is cleaned, and then given a new top coat in something as near as I can find to Volvo red. The pistons, conrods, crankshaft and countershaft were then put through a parts cleaner and scrubbed with a stiff brush to remove the gritty surface rust that had accumulated on them, and the sump cleaned of any remaining old oil. The piston rings are all in very good condition and, without any carbon build up, are all

nice and free in their grooves, so I won’t disturb them, or add to the expenditure by ordering a new set. I hope that decision doesn’t come back to bite me later. The next job is to clean up the outside of the engine block itself. This will then also be put through the washer before I can start to reassemble the bottom half of the engine. Only once that is done will I look at the head, which will need a complete strip down and rebuild, but more on that in the coming months. A few people have asked me about costs of this project. Without a defined budget, things could easily get out of hand, so I have decided to keep a running total of what is being spent as we go. I have a horrible feeling that I will not like the result, but it will provide either encouragement, or a reality check, to anyone else thinking of undertaking the same. I am only including direct costs of the parts used, and it is worth bearing in mind that there is likely to be storage and transport costs to add, as well as any specialist tools or equipment that you may need to buy or hire if you don’t already have them. I also haven’t included the cost of the trailer, as this is a separate item that retains its own value and can either be sold to recoup its cost, or added to

the value of the finished boat. In terms of spend this month, I have purchased a couple of things in preparation of putting the engine back together. I have only bought these at this time as they came up for sale and, knowing that I would need them later, I didn’t want to miss them. I found an AQ151 distributor in the US for $100 and, as the original one literally crumbled as I removed it from the engine, I made a cheeky offer of $75, which was accepted. I had to add shipping, VAT, import duty and the Post Office’s handling charge to the final tally, but it was still a bit of a bargain. I also came across someone selling a top and bottom end gasket and seal kit for the Volvo B230 engine, on which the AQ151 is based, and managed to bag it for under £40.

f your boating has taken you upwards and on to larger things, it is surprising how quickly you can forget about the thrill that you almost certainly had at some point in your past, when you took the wheel of a small, uncomplicated, uncompromised sportsboat. Of course, many never get tempted away from such, and for them boating enjoyment in this simplest of forms is never diminished. North Wales is a place where sportsboats outnumber cruisers by what appears to be a significant number. Up here the sheltered bays and waters are a playground for the sportsboater and, in the summer, the sound of the petrol engine drowns out the diesel rumble, as literally hundreds of sportsboats take to the water every weekend. It is no surprise then, that these waters are home to a prolific seller of such

vessels. Ideal Boat Sales Ltd is the dealer for a wide variety of cracking sportsboats, including the recent award winning Husky range, and the practical and clever Finnmaster line-up. But, we are not here to test one of Ideal Boat’s Finnish brands, we have something altogether more American to get our hands on, a Chaparral 21 H2O Sport. The 21 Sport is not the only 21 foot model in the H2O range. There is also the 21 Ski and Fish, as well as outboard

74

January 2018

“This is exactly how a sportsboat should be”

Top quality components and neat touches abound, especially around the helm area

versions of both of these models. Looking further into the Chaparral range, you will find that they also offer a 210 Suncoast outboard sport deck model, as well as a surf dedicated model in the 21 H2O Surf. Add another foot or so to your requirements and another three bowrider models from their extensive range can be added to the list. It is fair to say that if you are in the market for a boat of this style and size, you simply cannot ignore Chaparral. The H2O range are billed as Chaparral’s ‘value’ line up, but when you step onboard they feel anything but. The materials used appear top quality, and the way it is all put together looks as good, or even better, than you will find in much of the competition. The base boat comes with a basic, but pretty adequate, spec, and, importantly, the options list really doesn’t look like it will break the bank. An Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

example of this is the Deluxe package that adds a depth gauge, bimini or tower top, additional storage in the port side console and upgraded helm and navigator’s seat for just £1,060. Looking through the rest of the options, you should find it very easy to tick many of them, to build the exact spec you want, without breaking sweat. The most expensive option, and one that

was fitted to our test boat, is the £2,300 Velocity Folding arch. Other essentials, like a bow walk-through door, canvas and cover packages, infill cushions, extended bathing platform, mats and carpets or a premium sound system upgrade, are all in the hundreds, rather than thousands of pounds, leaving you with a well-specced boat, like our test boat, for just a couple of thousand pound over the base price. So what do you get? Stepping onboard over the transom, the first thing you notice is how big the standard bathing platform is. With plenty of room to sit and get kitted up for your favourite watersports, as well as a concealed bathing ladder and towing eye, I think the extended bathing platform option is borderline redundant. The non-slip, logo’d swim platform mat is a nice looking, and practical, feature that is definitely worth considering if you are going to be using your 21 for water based activities. Inboard, and across the transom, the 21 H2O comes with a full width sunpad, which acts as a rear facing seat when kitting up or just messing around off the back of the boat when stationary. On either side of the sun pad a section flips up, either to act as a back rest for lounging, or to gain access to the cockpit

The transom is great for seating, sunlounging or prepping for in-the-water activities

The walkthrough to the bow can be closed off with an optional lower door

without walking over it. Beneath these are lockers, the lids of which act as supports to the cushions above, when used as a lounger. The middle section of the sun pad lifts on double gas struts to provide access to the engine bay. The 4.5 litre V6 sits snugly in here, with just enough space to work around the engine. The 250hp option is physically the same size, so will prove equally easy to get around. Forward of the engine bay is a full width transom seat. The cushions either side remove to aid access into the cockpit, and beneath them both you will find a small locker. The central section lifts to reveal a larger, self draining locker. This could be used as an ice chest, wet locker for watersports kit or even a fish locker if you are so inclined. What is worth mentioning here, is that all cushions on the boat are

76

January 2018

The bow is a very comfortable place to be, with padded backrests and room to stretch out

made from a foam that is designed not to hold water, and cushion base boards are made from a composite material to avoid rot, just a couple of the quality build materials and techniques I mentioned earlier. Another is the fact that the cup holders, two of which are handily placed in front of the transom seat, are fully stainless steel, rather than plastic. Moving forward, you have a helm seat to starboard and a navigator’s seat to port, both set on slightly raised plinths. In between the two, in the floor, there is a good sized floor locker. Overhead, the optional arch provides some protection from the sun, with its canvas bimini, and the arch, which is custom made for Chaparral rather than an off-the-shelf product, can be easily lowered thanks to a quick release mechanism. The two seats on our test boat are of the upgraded variety, that comes with the deluxe package, and include flip up bolsters as well as Motorboat Owner Š Digital Marine Media Ltd

supporting sides on the backrest. They are both adjustable and can spin around to face aft if required. The navigator’s seat gets a padded elbow rest, a conveniently placed grab handle and a console that houses a drinks holder and small lockable glove box with a 12 volt charging socket inside. The standard stereo system also comes with a Bluetooth connection, so you can store your phone safely in here while listening to your

music. At the helm, there are some more top-notch touches. The supports for the screen, where it splits to go to the bow, are solid one-piece stainless steel, rather than the stainless tube with plastic ends you might find on other models, the steering wheel has an adjustable tilt mechanism, and even the engine instruments look a level above what you would expect. These may be small touches, and arguably you end up paying for them, but they do so much to improve the owner experience that I think it is a price worth paying. The helm itself is quite compact, with little space to mount additional equipment. The optional Garmin fishfinder is mounted on a small flat area to starboard, and this looks like it could accommodate a small

Access into the starboard console is via a door in the bow companionway, but if you want to make use of the space within the port side console you will need to add an access hatch, by way of the options list. Access to the bow is via an opening section of windscreen and, if you opt for it, a lower door. I would suggest this lower door is almost compulsory, as it does a great deal

78

January 2018

With 200hp on tap, the standard engine should provide more than enough performance for most

“The boat planes in just three seconds, and is doing 35 knots just seconds later” to improve crew comfort in spray or chilly conditions and, at only £168 it is an easy box to tick. In the bow you get enough space to seat four, the boat is rated to carry nine in total, although underway it is a great place for two. With one either side leaning against the padded console behind, with feet up on the cushions, this is a very comfortable place to be. There is a drinks holder and sturdy grab rail on both sides and good storage beneath the two side cushions. The bow cushion lifts out to reveal a flat platform, which is called a casting platform on the Ski and Fish version, and could equally be used as such on the Sport. It is also useful for boarding over the bow, where you step onto and over the non-slip anchor locker lid, beneath which Chaparral have incorporated Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

a neat anchor stowage system to avoid having it jumping around and potentially damaging the inside of the locker. Underway With a sportsboat, the proof of the pudding is in the driving and with the H2O 21 Sport the pudding is rather delicious. With the entry-level 200hp sterndrive package, acceleration was brisk, we were on the plane within three seconds and doing 35 knots just seven seconds later, and the top speed was a suitably impressive 41 knots. Serious watersport types might find the extra 50hp of the optional larger engine useful, but for most I would suggest the standard motor is more than adequate, leaving the £2k saving to go mad on the options. It’s not just the

79

acceleration and top speed that are ‘just so’ in the 21, the helming experience is also nigh on perfect. The steering is wellbalanced and light enough to drive with minimal effort, yet with enough feedback to feel engaged with the boat. The hull has what Chaparral calls the ‘Extended V’, whereby the hull on either side of the sterndrive is extended right back to the aft edge of the bathing platform, but the sterndrive is installed onto where the transom would normally be. This puts the drive into a recessed pocket and extends the running surface of the hull. This has a couple of effects. Firstly, you get the hull performance of a slightly larger boat, but secondly it acts like a pair of trim tabs, keeping the boat running flat, helping it onto the plane and keeping it on the plane at slower speeds. This was all evident when driving the 21, particularly in the way the boat jumped up onto the plane at an almost flat angle. At the helm, the driving experience is comfortable in all positions, thanks to

The anchor stows neatly in the bow locker

the adjustable seat and steering wheel, and well protected behind the tall screen. I would like to see a windscreen wiper on the options, as in certain conditions you will get some spray on the screen, although our test was completely devoid of it, but apart from that there is nothing to fault. It is fun to throw around, but it always felt controlled and safe. Heading away from the lee of the shore into some choppier conditions, the hull handled everything with ease. I had to work the throttle a little to avoid getting airborne, but even in these Force 4-5 conditions I could maintain a mid 20’s cruise without ever feeling I was pushing the boat too

hard. On the contrary, in fact, despite the sea state and the reasonably high speed I was taking it, I never heard a rattle or a squeak out of the boat, which is as good an accolade for its build quality as you will get. Conclusion I said at the beginning that it is easy to forget how much fun driving a good sportsboat is and, despite being lucky enough to drive many during the year, I am not immune to this. When I first took the helm of the 21 sport I was immediately smitten. It came to me like an epiphany. “This is exactly how a sportsboat should be”. I could talk about the specifics of what makes it good, or even what makes it stand

Boating fun in its purest form from the 21 H2O

out from the others, and I have to some extent above, but it actually doesn’t matter. What matters is that it is, and it does, and when you get behind the wheel of a boat designed almost exclusively for fun, there is nothing more I need to say.
