Child Care Provider Day at Morris Area Outdoor Learning Environment (OLE) Open to all Providers in Stevens County Monday, May 7, 2018 9:00—10:00 a.m. No cost to attend
This class provides a time for children to play in OLE. No prepared lessons or learning objectives will take place; only the natural learning that comes through play and discoveries. No need to pre-register. Meet in the foyer at the Morris Area Elementary School that morning and sign in at the MACE office.

Space is limited, so register early. Weather permitting we will explore our new Outdoor Learning Environment (OLE). Call Diane Strobel to register. Early Childhood Screening
Parents of 3 to 4 year old children Has Your Child Been Screened? Early Childhood Screening is a quick and simple check of how children are developing between the ages of 3 to 4 years. It identifies, at an early stage, possible learning or health concerns so that children can get the help they need before starting school. Early Childhood Screening is not an IQ test or a Kindergarten entrance exam. Morris Area Pre-Kindergarten classes require that screening be done within 90 days of program entry and it is required by state law for children before they can begin in Kindergarten. Early Childhood Screening only needs to be completed once. Screening is a free review of your child’s vision, hearing, height, weight, overall development, and immunization records. For the Morris Area Schools, children are screened at Horizon Public Health by a nurse. Watch for an information packet in the mail shortly after your child turns three-and-a-half years of age. If you do not receive a packet, call the Public Health office at 320-208-6672 to set up the day and time for your child’s screening. ECFE’s Spring Nature Walks

Nature Walk at Morris Wetland Management District
This is the perfect class to come and experience fun learning activities with other parents and children. Parents and children will enjoy a variety of creative learning activities and a circle time of songs and movement. Activities will include creative art, science, movement, reading, sensory play and more! An Early Childhood and Parent Educator will be available to help you guide your children’s activities and answer questions in regard to parenting. Parents and children do not separate for this class and older siblings welcome.
Enjoy the great outdoors with your family by joining ECFE’s Spring Nature Walks. There will be four opportunities to explore nature. Transportation will be provided for two of the classes and participants will meet the ECFE staff for two classes at nearby natural location. Bring your family to explore the Morris Wetland Management. ECFE staff will meet families in the main parking area in front of the wetland district headquarters at 43875 230 Street, Morris, 4 miles east of Morris on the side of County Highway 10. We will walk the trail to the creek to discover what kinds of aquatic invertebrates we can scoop out of the water. Nature Walk at West Central Experiment Gardens
Bring your family to explore the West Central Research & Outreach gardens! ECFE staff will meet families by the children’s garden area both days at the designated start time. The address for the West Central Experiment Station is 46352 MN-329, Morris —from here continue driving up MN-329 and turn into the next driveway on the right. We will walk the garden and trail areas to the observation area and play on the playground equipment. No cost to attend but please register.

Ride with ECFE family to explore the hiking trails, water and grassland, bird watching, playground, iron sculptures, and abundant wildlife at Niemackl Lake Park by Herman! A school bus will take us to our destination. The bus will leave at 9:00 from the front of the Elementary School. We should arrive at the park around 9:30. We will walk the trail areas and play on the playground equipment. Bus will load at 10:30 and return to the school by 11:00.

Ride with ECFE to one of the nation’s largest playgrounds. Destination Playground is a one-of-a-kind, 19,000 square foot, community built playground located at Robbins Island Regional Park in Willmar. A school bus will take us to our destination. The bus will leave at 9:00 from the front of the Elementary School. We should arrive at the park at about 10:00. We will explore and play on the playground equipment. Bring a picnic lunch for your family. Free Developmental Screening, Ages 0—2 Years, 11 Months
Your child will be screened for personal and social skills, large/small muscle skills, vision and hearing, self -help skills, speech/language skills, and immunization. Registration is required, and can be done by calling Kate Jirsa at 320-589-7948 or Diane Strobel at 320-585-2237. Deadline for registrations is Tuesday, May 22. Caring Hands Dental Hygiene Outreach Clinic Wednesday, May 23 | 8:00 a.m.—3:00 p.m. MAES, Pod A
The ECDN, Caring Hands Dental Clinic, and the Stevens County Early Childhood Initiative are offering an Outreach Dental Clinic. This clinic is for children between 1—18 years of age who are covered by Minnesota Health Care Programs and Minnesota Medical Assistance. Parent permission forms have been sent home with elementary and preschool students. The form can be found online on the nurse’s tab. Permission forms must be signed and returned to Diane Strobel or Karen Folkman by Friday, May 11. Children in school can be escorted to the clinic and returned to class making it optional for parents to be present. Once permission forms are received, an appointment will be made. Some services provided during the clinic include complete check-ups, x-rays, cleanings, fluoride treatment, and education. Pre-registration is a must for all classes and trips offered by Morris Area Community Education. Register early, as we reserve the right to cancel any courses without minimum enrollments one week prior to the class start date. We consider you registered when your registration form and fee have been received by our office. You will not receive a call confirming your registration. We will only call if a class is cancelled.
Refund Policy
A full refund will be made if enrollment is not sufficient to run the class. If a class does not meet your expectations, you may request a refund up to two days after the first class meeting. NO REFUNDS will be made after that time.
Scholarship Opportunities
It is our policy that no one shall be denied the opportunity to participate in a Community Education class because of inability to pay. Contact the Community Education Director to inquire about scholarships. No more than one waiver or class scholarship shall be granted per person per session. Thank you to the Stevens County Family Services Collaborative and the Morris Area Public Schools Foundation for making these scholarships possible.
Facility Use
We encourage groups and organizations to utilize school district facilities. Usage of rooms, gyms, auditoriums, etc. in the school buildings is reserved through Community Education. A completed building use permit is required. Nominal rental fees are charged depending on your group. Service fees such as custodial and food services may also be charged depending on your specific permit requests. Contact the Morris Area Community Education office in the Elementary School, 320-589-4394.

Fly Fishing in Minnesota and Beyond Instructor: Elliot Viker Ages 8+
Experience the thrill and excitement of fly fishing! This is a 2-session course that will be limited to 8 anglers in an effort to maximize your experience. You will acquire new skills and learn many fascinating facts about fish. Most importantly, you will learn how to catch walleye, northern pike, pan fish, bass, muskie, trout, and salmon on a fly rod! American Sign Language Timothy Poore Ages 12+
No previous sign language experience is required to attend this class. Mr. Poore will guide you in learning the basics of American Sign Language. After these 5 sessions, you will be able to communicate with deaf and hard of hearing people in your community and beyond. Mr. Poore is a Teaching Specialist at the University of Minnesota-Morris and a member of the Midwest Special Education Cooperative. He brings over 20 years of ASL teaching experience to this class. Spring Succulent Mini Garden Kathy Eystad Youth + Adult Class
Participants will learn how to plan out a succulent planter or fairy garden to take home and enjoy! These gardens are perfect for anyone, young and old, looking for a touch of green to add to their home. This hands-on 60 minute class is ideal for parents + children or grandparents + grandchildren. Children must be accompanied by an adult to create a garden to share. A planter, soil, succulents, and granite fines are covered by the class fee. All games will be played at the 7th Street Eagles Park/Chizek Field in Morris (no traveling). Games will be played on Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m. and a second game at 8:00 p.m.. School of Fish
Plaid Pillagers Summer Program for Girls
Pro-Angler, Mike Frisch Grades 3 Completed and Up
Join the School of Fish team for a 2.5 hour fishing class taught by pro-angler and television host, Mike Frisch. Students will learn about lakes, finding fish in those lakes, and some great ways to catch them. They will also learn to tie a fishing knot and rig, and use a slip-bobber set-up. An adult is invited to attend with a student for no additional cost (sharing one equipment pack). For that, students will keep a rod and reel, a Northland Tackle tackle box, a Cabela’s $10 gift card, a School of Fish workbook, and a KLN/Shearer’s snack pack. Most importantly, students will leave class with the knowledge and skills to go fishing! Summer Band Lessons

T-ball with your preschoolers is a great opportunity to introduce your son or daughter to the sport of softball/baseball. This is a parent child program where parents will be directly involved in doing all of the fun drills with their child(ren). The program teaches kids the basic skills needed to play softball/baseball while they work one on one and spend quality time with their parents.

Morris Area Community Education, UMM Coach Tim Grove and local staff members are excited about and are committed to making this league the best beginner program in West Central Minnesota. This co-ed league will focus on developing the skills necessary to be a successful softball or baseball player while keeping the fun in “fun”damentals. The emphasis will be on skill building and learning the proper techniques for playing softball and baseball. The players will be divided into smaller groups to increase fielding and batting opportunities. All players will be given opportunities to bat and field multiple times throughout each session. Team play concepts will also be covered. The coaches will do most of the pitching to keep the mini games and drills moving.
In this League, we use Softie Training balls and tennis balls. Therefore, batting helmets are not required. However, athletes can bring and use their personal batting helmet. Having the child’s name clearly written on all items is also helpful. Please bring your glove, appropriate footwear, and a water bottle to practice each day. The registration fee includes a league t-shirt. Information about Picture Day will be given at the first practice. Registration deadline to ensure a league t-shirt: June 1. Elementary Tennis Lessons
Let’s move those feet! You will become a better and faster runner while learning about warm up techniques, field event mechanics, and other fun running activities. Emphasis will be on participation, involvement, and development of physical fitness. The end of the program will conclude with a mini meet where all Tiger runners can run, jump, and throw at a friendly competition!
Lessons include the basic fundamentals: game rules, etiquette, ground strokes, volleys, and serves. There will be time each day for game play and a small tourney will conclude the weeks. Participants should bring their own racquet, water bottle, and appropriate clothing for movement.

Summer Sizzle Grades K—6 Completed
Explore a summer of hands-on interactive fun with recreation and enrichment topics that feature active participation and imagination. Summer Sizzle combines approximately three hours of academic enrichment a day, introducing the fascinating worlds of reading and literacy, technology, math, and science in a format that focuses on fun. The rest of the day is spent playing sports or games, swimming, creative enrichment, and exploring the many facets of the Morris community, resulting in a great, well-rounded experience.
Afternoons at Summer Sizzle will include approximately two hours of swimming and water play 3 days a week at the Regional Fitness Center. One day a week will be spent on a Summer Sizzle field trip or participating in a special event! These days and events will be communicated with families ahead of time.

Children’s Tea Party
The focus of this series will be on mechanics and fundamentals of windmill pitching. Mackenzie Weatherly is a former MAHS and University of Minnesota, Morris standout pitcher. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend with their child as well as elementary softball coaches before the elementary softball season begins. Rules, technique, and proper form will be covered, along with answering your questions.
The Stevens County History Museum is hosting a children’s tea party this summer! Children and their adult guest (grandparent, parent, etc.) are invited to attend an outdoor tea party on the museum lawn. You will learn about tea time history and etiquette. Adults can share memories of their childhood tea sets and tea parties. Come dressed up in tea time attire or possibly borrow something from the museum’s dress-up trunk. Tea and lemonade will be served, as well as light snacks. Attendees will receive a tea cup to take home with them at the end of the program! Space is limited, so register early!

Junior Golf Lessons
Trapshooting
This instructional program at the Pomme de Terre Golf Club will provide the junior golfer with the proper fundamentals for the game of golf. Topics covered will be proper etiquette, grip, stance and set-up, putting, chipping, pitching, and full swing. Bring your own clubs, or there are junior clubs for purchase in the pro-shop.
Trapshooting is a great way to introduce youth to firearms safety and the sport of shotgunning. Students will start the first night in a classroom setting at the 9F. They will learn about proper form, tracking, and the safe and responsible use of firearms. After completing the classroom portion, youth will have the opportunity to participate in the exciting sport of shooting clay pigeons.

Morris Area Elementary A Message from the Elementary Principal
While the seasons change, our focus at MAES has not. We will continually strive to help students achieve at the highest level possible. Our expectations are high and we use research proven methods to deliver effective, high quality instruction for our students! We collect and review data to drive our instruction and intervention decision-making to best meet all our student’s needs. If you have any questions about our educational programming please call, email, or just stop in to see the great things we are doing at MAES! Looking Ahead to a New School Year—Approximately August 13 the Elementary School office will mail out grades K—6 teacher assignments. Our teachers are very excited about the upcoming year. The District Wide Open House is scheduled for August 23 and will give your child an opportunity to get acquainted with the room, see their teacher and other students from the class. It is also an opportunity to meet other parents. The annual All-School Awards Ceremony will be held on May 30 at 1:45 p.m. in the New Student Orientation—Are you new to the community and have school age children? Please contact the elementary office Concert Hall. This is a celebration for 320-589-1250 to request registration materials or visit the school website [click on Elementary Home and then choose the students to be recognized for their success Back to School / New Students link]. 6th Grade Minnesota History Project Display

On Tuesday, May 15, Morris Area 6th graders will hold an open house at the elementary South Gym to showcase their Minnesota History Projects. The students have been working on these projects throughout the school year. Now they would like to share them with the public. Join us from 10:00 a.m.—2:00 p.m. to view the wide variety of topics about our fair state. We would really encourage current 5th grade parents to stop in and take a look, as your child will be working on this during the 2018-2019 school year. Many children get an early start over the summer with identifying a topic and often times visiting the website to gather information.
Targeted Services (Tiger Targets)
The Morris Area School District is offering summer classes for eligible students who just completed Kindergarten through Sixth Grade. Students are invited to participate through a teacher referral. Our goal is to pack the summer classes with fun and adventurous learning opportunities. The primary focus of “Tiger Targets” is on academic instruction and remediation (80%), but supports the whole learner. Targeted students will receive letters in late April. Tiger Targets meets from 8:00 a.m. —12:00 p.m. June 4-7 and June 11-14. A second session will be offered August 6-9 and August 13-16, 8:00 a.m.—12:00 p.m.

Spring activities are in full swing and the last quarter of the school year begins April 3rd. We will continue to work hard to provide the best possible education for our students and to make the most of the days we have left, as summer will be here before we know it. With the spring of the year, comes required annual state assessments for our students. Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA’s) are given to students across the state. Elementary and junior high students in grades third through eighth will take tests in reading and mathematics. Fifth and eighth grade students will also be administered a science test. In the high school, tenth grade students will take a reading and science test and eleventh grade students take a test in mathematics.
These statewide tests are summative measurements of student achievement that are used to evaluate student learning, skill, and assess achievement of the Minnesota Academic Standards. Our English language learners are also tested on their language proficiency development. Our staff works very hard throughout the school year delivering these standards to our students and giving them the skills necessary to be successful on these assessments and the skills necessary to be successful in life after high school. These tests will began on April 17th and will continue through May 4th. Please visit the high school or elementary website for a complete testing schedule. As the school year winds down, planning for the 2018-2019 school year is underway. Course registration has been completed and work continues on student schedules and the master schedule. From the Desk of Rick Lahn A Message from the Superintendent
It is hard to believe that another school year is nearing the end. Throughout my time here, I have come to know firsthand why our school district is truly exceptional! Our outstanding student body demonstrates leadership, work ethic and a commitment to excellence both in the classroom and through fine arts and extra-curricular activities. Each day, they give us new reasons to be proud through their many accomplishments. As educators, we know that this does not happen without supportive parents who provide the necessary guidance and nurturing to help their children succeed. In addition, we are very proud of our outstanding teaching and support staff who are dedicated to help every child reach their full potential in our classrooms. It is as a direct result of their efforts that we continue to be “The Finest School District in West Central Minnesota.”
Thanks to the generosity of our community, we will begin work on $19,000,000 worth of improvements to our facilities beginning this June. The renovation of our high school and the addition of a new bus storage facility and fitness classroom will take place over the next two summers with a target end date being September 2019. We are confident that this investment in our facilities will create school facilities that will continue to serve the community for decades to come. This summer, work will be heavily focused around the replacement of worn sewer lines in our high school facility. This part of the renovation will require the removal of some hallway floors and retrenching and replacing worn sewer piping. In addition, remodeling work in our high school auditorium and the early construction of our fitness classroom and bus garage will happen this summer. Construction renovation is always messy work and will make some areas of our high school building inaccessible over the next two summers. We ask for your patience as we work towards completion of our project. We remain excited about the changes our renovation project will bring. In closing I would like to congratulate our seventy two graduating seniors as they pursue the next chapter of their lives. Always remember that you are a “Tiger” and welcome back to visit us at school any time. Have a relaxing and enjoyable summer!

Power of Produce
Stevens Community Medical Center will once again be offering the Power of Produce at the Morris Area Farmers Market. Power of Produce is a program for children ages 12 and under. Each week at the Farmers Market, children will take part in an activity to learn about fruits and vegetables. They will earn $2 tokens that can be used to purchase something from vendors at the market. The Morris Area Farmers Market is on Thursdays at the Morris Public Library Square from 3:00—6:00 p.m. beginning at the end of June. Power of Produce is led by Registered Dietitian Alyssa Thooft.
