Hello! Welcome to Spring 2018 at More Music!

Spring is the perfect time to try something new; join a choir or a carnival band, come to a singing workshop or attend one of our fabulous gigs or festivals in Morecambe, across the region and beyond. This year we will see many changes at More Music; the main one will be our Artistic Director, Pete Moser moving on to new challenges.

We will be focusing on Pete’s passionate, meaningful and eclectic approach to music making throughout the spring with a series of events called Pete’s Party Nights. Inspired by musicians and friends that have worked with him, Pete’s Party Nights will be filled to the brim with exceptional performances, delicious food, an exciting array of special guests and a few surprises.

This year’s annual memorial event will begin at Lancaster Castle and then move inside The Storey for reflections and performances on the national Holocaust Memorial Day theme of the power of words.

Saturday 10 February | Doors 7.30pm Two Fantastic Sets by Two Fantastic Big Bands Lancashire Youth Jazz Orchestra, directed by Paul Rigby formed in 1975 and have continued to develop contemporary jazz with young players from around the county. The ULMS Big Band is a great local favourite and one of their strongest ensembles to date. Matthew Clare, the Big Band’s conductor for the last 4 years, is joined by Harry Smith to share conducting duties.

Song in the Landscape : choral singing workshop with Mary Keith

Saturday 24 March | 10am - 4pm Mary Keith is a freelance composer and choral director, working exrensively with community choirs and singers, taking them beyond traditional concert venue settings. Her workshop will involve physical and vocal warm-ups, exploring beat, rhythm, texture, pitch, game playing and playing with voices in the space. She will teach some of her own material from Heartlands and from theatre shows as well as songs from around the world inspired by nature – forests, rivers, oceans and birdsong. Expect glorious four part unaccompanied harmony and new songs taught by ear. All voices welcome.

Thursday 29 March & Friday 30 March These amazing sessions for young children have been created by More Music in partnership with Charlotte Arculus, Early Years Artist, comic performer, musician and artistic director of Magic Adventure. Magic Islands will take place in a specially created space where objects, instruments and playful interventions gently flow in and out. The activities will be immersive and interactive blending singing, music, light, texture, colour and shadow to create a magical experienced for very young children and their families. This enchanting environment allows children to explore freely and according to their own instincts.

Guo Yue and friends Join us for an evening of music, stories and food from one of our greatest collaborators and friends. Guo Yue is a musician with a passion for food, a chef whose events at WOMAD Festival are always a hit. He will make you laugh and cry while delighting your palette with delicious food, bursting with flavours and memories from his childhood days in Beijing before and during the Cultural Revolution. The evening will also feature the glorious voice of Seaming To and the Long Walk Chinese Ensemble.

The effervescent Johnny Kalsi drives the Dhol Power House of The Mighty Dhol Foundation around the globe. Leon Patel and the Journey of the Orixas brings a celebration of cultural migration with African percussion & dance, Afro-Brazilian Carnival and lost ancient songs. The Bristol Branch join us for a good ol’ knees up bringing Brazilian Forró, a dash of Cajun sauce and samba swing. More Music’s Ben McCabe, Leroy Lupton and Dave Shooter bring an intoxicating mix of percussion, synths, beats, bass and effects to the party.

The Heartbreaks formed in Morecambe in 2009; brought together by a shared love of soul music, Orange Juice and gritty northern literature. It’s brilliant to welcome them back to More Music to reform for this one-off homecoming gig. Katy Pickles is a singer/songwriter from Lancaster who sings deeply personal original songs with her haunting voice and guitar. A cohort of brilliant young players, Youth Orbit One formed in 2013. They have come back to More Music from all corners of the UK to play together once more. The evening will also feature More Music’s very own saxophonist Matt Robinson, songwriter Frenchie, Rachel Parsons on kit and beatboxer and rapper S.L.O.W.

Little Man Your Time Has Arrived From Friday 5 January Paul Kondras Impressions, fragments, memories of places. How often has one seen a gem, an oddity, a surprise, a piece of information, an idea only for it to dissolve in the memory and be forgotten? A visual encounter lost forever. When, where, and how did the “Little Man” arrive in my life, and more importantly, what is he? A talisman, a mascot, a gargoyle, an amulet, a totem, a lucky, or unlucky charm. One Man Band Shebang From Friday 16 February Capturing the spirit and fun of the One Man Band Shebang, Graham Wynne is a brilliant photographer. He has worked with More Music over the years as a musician and photographer. Accompanying the photographs there will be films from Johnny Bean, Tom Lloyd and others.
