It wasn’t as if John and Colleen Shanks weren’t happy in their Beverly Hills home when they decided to move 10 years ago. It was on a prime street and there was certainly enough space for them and their two sons. “What we needed was more space for our art collection,” explains John, a Grammy award-winning producer, musician and writer who has worked with Bon Jovi, Kelly Clarkson, Sheryl Crow and Keith Urban, among many others. “We started out with a love of ’60s pop art like the work of Keith Haring, and then it grew from there. We like contemporary art. In particular I like classics like Ed Ruscha, who, for me, is the number one most important California artist alive today. I also really like Roy Lichtenstein,” he says, pointing to a rare, oversized handwoven wool tapestry hanging on the dining room wall. The couple’s discovery of a home on the other side of the hill was somewhat serendipitous. A friend from the Valley mentioned that the brand new house next door to him—a Mediterranean in a neighborhood with numerous A-list celebrities—was for sale, and the Shanks went to take a look. The home, situated on a rectangular one-acre lot behind a tall fence, offered plenty of privacy.

Additional changes: All the fireplaces in the home were redone; the kitchen was renovated, and multiple wall finishes—like the gray Venetian plaster finish and velvet wallpaper in the dining room—were installed throughout. “Mike is very creative when it comes to wall finishes. He kept nudging me toward wallpaper, which I originally wasn’t really a fan of. But now I love it,” says Colleen. “It really adds warmth to the rooms.” Mike describes the opportunity to work on a property with a world-class art collection “a designer’s gift” and shares that the art often was the impetus for décor. “After selecting where best to place the painting or

photography, I would extract a color from the piece and use it as drapery or a fabric color. The major challenge was to be careful that the wall color and texture did not compete with the art. After all, the art work is the punch. Good design and architecture need to complement without overshadowing,” he says. Now that their boys are grown and on their own (Dylan, 23, is an A&R executive at Atlantic Records and a manager for artists; Jackson, 20, is a student at New York University), Colleen says friends keep asking her if they will remain in the house. “I keep telling people yes, we will! Why would we move? This is our home. We created it for us and we love it. It doesn’t feel too big because we actually use all of the space. Plus, it is so peaceful and quiet. It’s just a lovely lifestyle here in the Valley.” ■

The Valley is full of glorious fruit trees—veritable ranches are hidden in backyards, and orchards grow in plain sight out front. Yet few of us actually know about proper care for our trees. Joanna Glovinsky, the founder of Fruitstitute (fruitstitute.com), LA’s only fruit tree care and education service, aims to help homeowners with their orchards, whether one tree or 50. Here are her suggestions on Valley tree care, from root to crown.

BALCONY BY COLETTE SHELTON cococozy.com In renovating this 1930s Spanish home for a project I did called the Cococozy Design House, I knew the balcony was going to be one of the most integral elements. It overlooks a sprawling backyard and you can see it from every angle. The balcony felt dated and lifeless, so the decision to completely redo the tile was an easy one. The mission: to make the balcony pop. I wanted all eyes drawn to the new tile. That said, the major challenge was choosing the tile color and pattern. I wasn’t entirely sure how I wanted to approach it. Since the space was a focal point on the property, I wanted the area to feel special and unique but also be comfortable. I envisioned this as a space that would be used and enjoyed—not one just for show. Part of me felt like big, bold, bright colors would make for an interesting design aesthetic. But I ultimately felt the black and white was more striking. Plus it makes the space feel modern yet timeless.

“I LITERALLY CHOOSE HAPPINESS EVERY SINGLE DAY.” I grew up with divorced parents; one lived in Beverly Hills, the other just outside in Beverlywood. I was a poor little rich girl, quite literally. My mom struggled while my father had a steady and established career. It was strange. I learned very young that it was a volatility that I never wanted to maintain. This is one of my “whys.” I attended USC after transferring from Santa Monica College. I was accepted into the theater program, but I realized that I wanted to have something to say in a room of suits, so I changed my major to political science and focused on the Middle East. I loved every minute of it. My first year out of college, I worked for a boutique public relations firm in Beverly Hills—learning the hustle and getting to “yes” by all means necessary for our clients. That same year, my family’s world was rocked. My beautiful 16-year-old sister suffered traumatic brain injury in a car accident on Sunset Boulevard on Valentine’s Day—a sudden reminder at the mere age of 24 that life is short and fragile and to love hard on those you love. She remains in the same state as she did that day. I am reminded daily of the care we must take for one another. This is another “why” for me. After recognizing that nothing was going to be easy in this life, that if I wanted something I had to go out and make it happen, I had my aha moment: Happiness is a choice. I cannot

So many of my clients live overseas. I work with them from the start, looking for a home, to the finish, when they walk into their new home to find their favorite coffee, teas and breakfast waiting for them when they move in. I recently moved to Los Angeles from NYC after spending 15 years living in Tokyo and Hong Kong. Without a doubt, travel is one of my biggest inspirations.
