oollowing the unprecedented protests that spread across the globe, the words of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement have been painted on the streets of a number of cities in the USA and in Toronto - with Montreal now joining the movement. On Tuesday July 14th, people from community groups, activists and artists took to the streets along Sainte-Catherine St. East, between St-Hubert and St-Andre - with paint

brushes, rollers, tape and spray paint cans in hand. They began by outlining the words 'Black Lives Matter' and 'La Vie des Noirs Compte' almost as wide as the streets and close to one block long, and then painters began filling it in with white paint. They will be painting it in several colors before it is completed on Wednesday. Their goal is to bring more to the awareness to the racial inequalities and prejudices towards Black

people. A report from October 2019, showed that Black people were stopped 4.2 times more often for street checks by police, Indigenous people 4.6 times (Indigenous women were stopped 11 times more often than white women) and Arabic people 2 times more often. It is time for changes to happen and Montreal needs to be part of this conversation.

Quebec announces masks to be mandatory in public spaces

t Monday’s press briefing, Quebec Premier Francois

A

By Bonnie Wurst mtltimes.ca Legault announced that as of this Saturday, wearing a face mask will be mandatory in all of the province's public indoor spaces. It includes stores, bars, restaurants, concerts, showrooms, drug stores, dentist and doctor offices - basically all indoor places open to the public. It comes after some people that were at several bars (recently reopened in Montreal and the South Shore) as well as at crowded parties, who did not respect the Covid safety protocols

- and subsequently tested positive with the virus. Their actions are now resulting in community spreading. All Quebecers will be required to wear masks, with exceptions for children under 12 years old and those with specific medical conditions such as cardiac or respiratory issues. The Premier arrived at the conference wearing a mask, proudly saying it was made by Quebec designers. "Four months ago we asked Quebecers to stay home and it worked well, except in the CHSLD's… here in North America we saved thousands of lives. But we are not going to change directives overnight," he said and later added, "The Covid-19 virus is really dangerous, let's be careful to wear a mask to stay safe… people talk about 'freedom' (to wear one or not), but freedom is about wearing a mask. Please, when

Please stay safe!

Quebec Premier wearing a face mask you go into the metro or a shop, wear a mask. When we are respectful, we don't transmit the virus to others… we hope more and more people come on board." Fines for not wearing one will start at $400 (after a first warning) and for each offense after that, it can increase up to $6000. At

first, shop owners will be held responsible for paying the fines, but as of August 1st individual fines will be issued to people who are found not wearing one. When asked how shop and businesses will be able to enforce the rule, especially when people give them a hard time, Legault said, "We will count on shop owners

that rules are respected, we need their collaboration… police can't cover all the stores, (but) they can call the police for help." "Your greatest control to decrease the virus is cooperation," Legault said, referring to the directives of two metres distancing and 10 people maximum at gather-

ings. "Do not have big parties with more than 10 people … we will not accept these gatherings." More and more evidence shows that wearing masks is effective in controlling the spread of the virus. Quebec, that was hardest hit, is the first province in Canada to make masks mandatory.

Le Windsor gives back to the community with free meal program or over 140 years, the Le Windsor has been the jewel in the crown that is the downtown core of Montreal. First as a prestigious hotel, where many well known celebrities and international political figures stayed when they visited Montreal, and then as a top notch banquet and reception venue.

F

By Stuart Nulman mtltimes.ca However, like many businesses of this nature, Le Windsor felt the sting of how the Corona Virus pandemic severely affected their operation since this past March. But instead of shutting things down, the people at Le Windsor decided to give back to the community in the face of this serious health crisis. And what was decided was to use the venue to become the nerve centre for a program that would cook, coordinate and distribute free meals to help Montreal's homeless population. “Once our Windsor team got comfortable with Zoom conferences, we began to brainstorm ideas on how we could start a charity initiative as we wait for events to pick back up again. It made sense to partner with Traiteur Bon Appetit, and prepare meals in our large empty kitchens, and assemble the food in the enormous ballrooms, enabling safety and social distancing measures for our staff and volunteers," said Isabelle Rochon, Director of Sales for Le Windsor Ballrooms. "We initially wanted to help the hospital frontline workers, but quickly realized other organizations were already taking care of them. So, we decided to help the homeless because Montreal’s food banks announced all over the media that they were afraid the pandemic would leave them underfunded and left out," she added. "When Dan Bensoussan (President of Le Windsor) contacted us to see if we were interested in giving back to the community in this time of need and without question we agreed," said John D'Ambrosio of Traiteur Bon Appetit. First of all, the people at Le Windsor approached potential donors such as Desjardins, Bentall Green Oak and • July 18, 2020

Volunteers and staff from le Windsor made over 8600 - More photos online mtltimes.ca the Windsor Ballrooms, to raise needed funds to get the project off the ground and as a result, successfully raised a total of $41,000. As well, Sizons Graphic Designs donated 8000 container labels, and a friend of Le Windsor generously donated a large amount of face masks. From there, Mr. D'Ambrosio and his Traiteur Bon Appetit team came in to

"Our chefs came in early in the morning to prepare the meals. All of the had to fill out a Covid-19 questionnaire asking if they have been in contact with anybody who has Covid,

feet apart. The chefs had to wear face masks, gloves and hats, with breaks every hour so,that they could wash their hands regularly. Volunteers also followed proper hygiene standards by wearing gloves and masks as they mixed, assembled, packaged and delivered the meals by 10:30 a.m. to several temporary sites.

"Finding volunteers was equally easy. If the pandemic has brought anything positive, it is a sense of togetherness," said Ms. Rochon. "The lives of every person has been affected. Everyone has more free time and seems to be more sensitized to community life. It was invigorating to see friendly faces and share our recent struggles and adjustments after such a long time in confinement." From June 1 to July 3, the free meal program served a total of 8650 meals every Monday, Wednesday and Friday to the city's homeless people. And Ms. Rochon and Mr. D'Ambrosio agreed about how the values of coming together, giving back and feeding the lessons fortunate with healthy meals had such a positive effect and gave a sense of humility to everyone involved during such a time of unprecedented crisis. "The individuals experiencing homelessness told, organizers how much they appreciated receiving such a colourful and nutritious meal," she added. "Indeed, prior to this, so e of the organizations had mainly only been able to offer sandwiches to the community." If you would like to volunteer at a food bank and help prepare meals, Ms. Rochon recommends approaching Sac-A-Dos, the Old Brewery Mission, Accueil Bonneau and Resilience Montreal. 18th to stem the spread of coronavirus. The rule will apply to people age 12 and older, with exceptions for people with specific medical conditions yet to be determined. "We're not going to ask people to walk around with a medical certificate," said Quebec's director of public health Horacio Arruda, specifying that typically it would be people with severe cardiac or respiratory illnesses, adding that it's up to people's judgment. "It's not because you have a bit of asthma that you can't wear a mask." Medical exemptions for wearing a mask generally include respiratory problems, other medical conditions, mental health problems, disability, age, and pregnancy. Other factors, such as race and ethnicity, have a bearing on the discussion. Kate Mulligan, an assistant professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto who studies health policy and equity, has expressed concern about mandatory masks and enforcement. She said people with breathing difficulties, such as asthma, may have trouble with masks, and certain groups, such as Black and Indigenous men, may face discrimination when wearing a mask. "They may be perceived as a safety risk, and that could create a safety risk to themselves." This is coming at a time when there are at least two online petitions calling on the government to revoke its stance on mandatory masks. More than 56,000 Quebecers have signed a CHANGE.ORG petition calling on the Legault government to reverse its decision on mandatory masks. Berthierville resident Geneviève Sénécal, the petition sponsor, argues that the science of wearing masks isn't consistent in its conclusions. She cites several studies and says information provided by Premier Legault and public health director Dr. Horacio Arruda is often contradictory. In addition to calling for the order to be rescinded, Sénécal contends that forcing people

to wear a mask violates the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Mandatory masks aren’t in line with the Canadian government’s policy which emphasizes a balanced and voluntary approach. In late May, Canada’s chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam said non-medical masks or cloth face coverings are not for everyone. “Don’t judge people not wearing a mask. Some people have trouble breathing and should not be wearing masks,” said Dr. Tam. “We have to be understanding that for some, wearing a mask is not possible.” She said non-medical masks should not be used on children under the age of two, anyone who has trouble breathing, is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove it on their own. However, Quebec appears to be adopting a more restrictive approach to medical exemptions at a time when Dr. Tam has broadened Canada's public health advisory to include anyone finding it difficult to wear a mask in hot, humid weather. On June 19, Canada's top doctor tweeted this message: ”Non-medical masks or cloth face coverings can make breathing difficult in high heat & humidity. When outside in a #heatwave, 2m. #PhysicalDistancing is best. Save the mask for indoors when you can’t keep your distance.” The Legault government's decision to make it compulsory to wear a mask in indoor public settings runs afoul of civil liberties. Cara Faith Zwibel, a lawyer and Director of the Fundamental Freedoms Program at the Canadian Civil Liberties Association says that over-zealous regulation could have negative impacts on vulnerable individuals. “Wearing a mask is not medically recommended for some people and may be counter-productive for others, for example, young children who may be more likely to touch their faces if they are wearing a mask.” Zwibel has also expressed concern about people with disabilities, such as hearing impairments, who need to see people's faces to read their lips or people on the autism spectrum who may have trouwww.mtltimes.ca

ble with masks. ON June 26th, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association issued a statement on mandatory masks, cautioning public authorities from going “overboard” on mask regulation. “At this point, the CCLA does not support generalized mandatory mask policies that require the wearing of nonmedical masks in all indoor public settings.” The CCLA says that governments have to justify restrictions on liberty, such as forcing people to wear masks, as being both reasonable and, based on evidence. “The scientific evidence on the effectiveness of non-medical masks is mixed. This is nothing like mandating seat belts in the 1970s. A legal requirement that masks be worn in all indoor public spaces is an attempt at massive, and perhaps permanent, behaviour modification for the entire population. A legal change of this magnitude must be based on stronger evidence than we currently have.” Quebec is leaving it up to merchants to enforce the rule in their establishments and those who don’t could face fines ranging from $400 to $6,000. The decision has drawn criticism from business owners who are tasked with applying mask rules. Rather than providing comprehensive regulation, Legault has directed businesses to call the police if their customers refuse to comply with wearing a mask. Business groups have questioned that rationale, asking why the burden falls to them. “We’re not equipped for that,” said Marc Fortin, president of the Quebec branch of the Retail Council of Canada (RCC). In some areas of the country where masks have become mandatory, retail workers have faced physical threats and been spit on for trying to enforce mask rules. While mandatory mask requirements (including store policies) can create exceptions for people, meaningful enforcement may require invasive questioning to see who can benefit from such exceptions, creating concerns about privacy rights and the sharing of confidential medical information. The CCLA states, "The

task of enforcement will likely land on businesses and individuals who may be ill-equipped for the task (e.g. requiring a greeter at a grocery store to question customers about their health and determine who should be permitted entry without a mask) and may put both those responsible for enforcement and those subject to it at increased risk." Masks have been mandatory on public transit in Quebec since July 13th. However, bus drivers do not have to wear a mask, a blatantly discriminatory application of the regulation which makes for a very fraught situation. In addition to demonstrations and boycotts, there has been violence in jurisdictions that have brought in mandatory masks. In France, a bus driver who asked riders to wear a mask was taken off the bus and beaten to death by a group of youths. In the US, a security guard was shot and killed by a man when an altercation occurred over wearing a mask. People with mental health problems and intellectual challenges who aren't able to articulate their needs run the risk of being harassed and bullied by other passengers if they aren't wearing a mask. "As with the enforcement of many rules and laws, we are concerned about who will be most impacted and whether racialized and marginalized communities will be disproportionately affected," Zwibel says. The CCLA is inviting the public to consult its report released in June 2020, Stay Off the Grass: CCLA and Policing the Pandemic Mapping Project on Ticketing During COVID. Legault says that mandatory masks are better than lockdown and until a vaccine is developed this is it. A recent Quebec public service announcement aimed at building support for mandatory masks presents the issue in similarly binary terms: wear a mask in public indoor spaces or be home alone and lonely. Not quite. People can enjoy relationships with their family and friends at home and backyard barbeques. They can chat with their neighbors at a safe distance from their balconies and over the fence. There is such a thing as the telephone and people are communicating virtually more than ever before. They can work from home, opt-out of public transportation - drive, carpool, cycle, or walk to work. Many people have discovered that they actually prefer shopping online to navigating crowded malls and big-box stores. There is no law that says Quebecers have to vacation or take in cultural activities in Quebec and they can always escape to other places without onerous mask regulation. he pandemic deprived Montrealers of enjoying the Grand Prix du Canada at the Gilles Villeneuve racetrack, this past June. However, when the fans return to the venue, hopefully, this fall, they will also be surprised by the beauty of the new installations whose renovation was finished this year. So impressive is the original structure from an esthetic point of view that it was awarded the Prix d'Excellence 2020 by the Ordre des architects du Québec (OAQ).The Espace Paddock, as it is called, was designed by Les architectes FABG. The project, on the site of the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve racetrack in Montreal's Parc JeanDrapeau, also received the Ordre's mention for Innovation. The jury was chaired by French architect Dominique Jakob (Agence Jakob+MacFarlane) and comprised actress Anne-Marie Cadieux as well as architects Dominique St-Gelais (St-Gelais Montminy & Associés architectes) and Jean-Maxime Labrecque. The Ordre's site describes the new facilities in these terms: "As part of a renewal agreement for the Canadian Formula 1 Grand Prix, the City of Montreal had to replace the existing temporary structures with a permanent building that meets the needs of the event. The new paddock includes garages for the teams, offices for the International

Automobile Federation (FIA) and the promoter, a lounge area for 5,000 people and a multimedia centre for journalists and broadcasters." There are some other exciting features of this unique structure, "Unlike other international Grand Prix events, the lounging areas have no outside walls and no air conditioning. The finishes are bare, solar panels provide electricity for lighting, and the building tries to make responsible use of public money. The roof structure will distinguish the Canadian edition and give it an identity based www.mtltimes.ca

Montréal Pride Festival's 360 edition complete programming unveiling Diversity at home, with Backxwash, Melissa Etheridge, Dominique Jackson, Adam Lambert, Ngabo and many others!

T

he Montréal Pride Festival, presented by TD, unveiled this morning the entire programming of their festival's 360 Edition, which will take place from August 10 to 16, 2020. While the festivities are being presented in a digital format this year, Pride will travel to festivalgoers' homes while highlighting our various communities' challenges. Notably, Backxwash, Melissa Etheridge, Dominique Jackson, Adam Lambert, Ngabo, all the Queens from Canada's Drag Race including its judge Brooke Lynn Hytes and many other artists of the sexual and gender diversity will take part in the celebrations! Fierté Montréal (CNW Group/Montréal Pride Celebrations) A Typical Day's Journey - Daily Activities The day will begin at 9 am with a short video on the different aspects that can influence the mental health of people of the sexual and gender diversity, presented by Deepak Kashyap, a psychotherapist in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT). These capsules will address, among others, the themes of worrying, toxic relationships and depression via the festival's Facebook page. At 10 am, the Afro Pride Hour, presented under the curatorship of Uwayo Dushime on Montréal Pride's YouTube channel, will present one hour of daily content adapted to the different realities experienced by black people of the sexual and gender diversity and in solidarity with the Black Trans Lives Matter movement. Among other things, the historical contribution of black trans women, dance and stage performance as tools for resilience and intersectionality will be topics discussed during this hour dedicated to the black communities. Starting at noon, a vox pop on the daily theme will be broadcast on MAtv - Montréal region, on MAtv - all of Québec as of 3 pm, and will be available the next day on Illico on • July 18, 2020

Demand, Helix, and matv.ca. Festivalgoers will be invited to learn more about the different realities experienced by their peers. The capsules will be also be broadcast via Montréal Pride's social networks. The daily theme will then be explored in greater depth every day at 5 pm via a Question-and-Answer session with the ambassadors, broadcast live via the Montréal Pride's Instagram account. Annie Pullen Sansfaçon (August 10, presented by FIDO), Elle Barbara (August 11, presented by TD), Dominique Lavergne (August 12, presented by TROJAN), Ngabo (August 13), Miss Butterfly (August 14, presented by TD), as well as Rosie Bourgeoisie and PierreOlivier Beaulac Bouchard (August 15, presented by TD) will take questions from festivalgoers live! The end of the day will be punctuated by lively music because every evening starting at 6 pm Montréal Pride Festival's eclectic ambience will buzz over the airwaves on its Twitch account. From Monday to Saturday we will have DJ Giant (August 10), Misstress Barbara (August 11), Jack Chang (August 12), DJ Nalee (August 13), Sissy Superstar (August 14) and Odile Myrtil (August 15). Finally, festivalgoers will also be able to enjoy the Crave Collection: "Celebrating Pride". The special collection will be brought to the forefront on Crave starting August 6. This special collection will include some 40 films and series including the famous titles: Canada's Drag Race, Euphoria, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Shiny Shrimps, The L Word: Generation Q, Green Book, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Pain and Glory, as well as RuPaul's Drag Race. Fierté littéraire - Diversity from A to Z, presented by FIDO The music of these DJs will surely set the mood for the reader in you, as Fierté littéraire returns this year with a diverse program, on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday,

starting at 6 pm. Fierté littéraire will indeed hold its 9th edition, broadcasted online on Montréal Pride Festival's platforms presented in a virtual format. Inspired by Édith Piaf's song "C'est l'amour", Fierté littéraire celebrates love in all its embodiments of sexual orientation and gender identity, in five events: August 10: The literary cabaret "C'est l'amour, genres!" where the creative writing contest finalists will be announced as well as the winning text, which will receive a $1,000 bursary. This event is hosted by Barbada de Barbades. August 11: Le Combat aux mots returns with actor Steve Bastien, actress Pascale Drevillon, comedian and author Anne-Marie Dupras and author and public relations specialist Alain Labonté. These four personalities will each defend a title in a colourful debate, hosted by the unmatched Amélie BoivinHandfield. August 14: Transpoésies unveils the submitted texts and winners of the poetry contest in a moving event hosted by Pascal Cormier. JeanPaul Daoust will be the guest of honour. August 15: On rit p'us, mais on lit with Barbada. Okay, we'll laugh a little. No, we'll laugh out loud! Montréal Pride introduces the next generation of literary talent from the 2LGBTQ+ communities. Hosted by Barbada de Barbades. August 16: Transports littéraires, hosted by Alexandre Drouin, is an event dedicated to trans and non-binary literature. 7 days - 7 themes - 7 universes Each day of Montréal's Pride Week will be associated with a different theme of the sexual and gender diversity with unique activities and shows for a full 360 coverage of these issues with the collaboration of ambassadors reflecting each theme. Monday, August 10 Family Constellations, presented by FIDO Annie Pullen Sansfaçon Following the broadcast

of the mental health awareness video capsules, presented by FIDO, and the daily Afro Pride Hour, Montréal Pride Festival's 360 Edition's first day will open with the Official Launch of the festival starting at 11 am on MAtv and on Montréal Pride's social networks with an Indigenous Ceremony followed by speeches and the presentation of this year's political and social demands. At 1 pm and 4 pm, a Brother's Circle and a 2S Circle, respectively facilitated by Kama La Mackerel and Moe Clark, will be held. A Closed Circle is an event that brings together a group of different people with a common focal point in a safe and more secure environment thus promoting healing by sharing similar but unique experiences. Montréal Pride Festival's 360 Edition's first day will end with a unique activity exclusively presented by Montréal Pride! The Canadian Opera Company is proud to present online: Hadrian to audiences around the world in a special onenight-only presentation with a live Q&A session with Rufus Wainwright and Daniel MacIvor. This online event will be the first opportunity for anyone to experience the show since its world premiere in Toronto, back in 2018! capsule presented by TD, the Afro Pride Hour and the daily theme's vox pop video capsule presentation, the Sister's Circle will be held exclusively for people from diverse backgrounds, facilitated by Kama La Mackerel. This day, which aims to highlight the different realities of women's diversity will end on a high note with a digital concert specifically prepared for the Montréal Pride festivalgoers! After years of trying to work together, following a DJ Set that only Misstress Barbara can helm, it's during the 360 Edition that Melissa Etheridge will touch everyone's hearts, starting at 8 pm on the festival's Facebook page! An evening that you won't want to miss! Wednesday, August 12 - Bear - Leather Fetish Communities, presented by Trojan Dominique Lavergne In order to learn more about fetish practices and its philosophy and to deconstruct the prejudices still associated with them, the daily information capsule will follow Gabrielle Beauregard, sexologist, during an interview with five members of the bear, leather and fetish communities. At 2 pm, the REZO team, accompanied by Sister Marie-Félicité of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Danny Godbout, Mr. Leather Montréal 2011 and Gabriel-le Beauregard, sexologist, will offer a dynamic and respectful presentation on Montréal Pride's Facebook page about sex toys,

consumption in the context of sexuality, consent in fetish practices and of course HIV/STI prevention. Thursday, August 13 Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous, People of Colour (QTBIPOC) Ngabo QTBIPOC people are credited as having initiated the Pride movement more than 50 years ago. However, the visibility that they deserve is still not fully achieved, nor is the full recognition of their rights. Montréal Pride Festival's 360 Edition not only includes an hour of Afro Pride content, but also a full day dedicated specifically to people from these communities. In addition, two Closed Circles will be held during the week at determined times and places that will only be shared with those concerned. At 1 pm, Montreal's Metonymy Press' The New Face of Queer Lit, presented by FIDO via YouTube, will feature an English-speaking panel discussion with four queer, trans and/or non-binary writers in Canada who are leaders of modern LGBTQ literature. The event will feature Hazel Jane Plante, Kama La Mackerel and Helen Chau Bradley and will be hosted by Eli Tareq El Bechelany-Lynch and presented via the Montréal Pride's Facebook page. continued on Page 21

With an evidently impressive career thus far, we have no doubt that he can even make the leap to the NFL, which in essence is p[probably at the back of any kid’s mind that lacers up the cleats and grasps the pig skin for that 50 yard dash to glory. It was obviously the case from this young man and we’d say he’s well on his way there. We wish him luck and hope to see him wherever he envisions himself down the line. We’d say he more than deserves it.

Investing in your health By Joanna Wright Montreal Times

oon after my father’s death, my family began the arduous task of sorting through his financial affairs. While doing so, we discovered that he had left us with a generous amount of money through his life insurance plan. Through my grief, something kept making me shake my head, as I rolled those two little words around in my brain. Life insurance? How ironic. He was dead. There was no insurance of “life” for my father in this long term investment. The only thing that was certain is that he wouldn’t be the one reaping the benefits. Then a strange emotion began to emerge. Regret. Why hadn’t he invested in his health with this money while he was still alive? Perhaps we could have enjoyed a few more good years to share together? Did he really think I’d rather have this money than have him here beside me? I recount this story often to groups of seniors who fail to see the importance of investing

in their health. Whether it be a personal fitness trainer, a recumbent exercise bike or a gym membership, I explain to them that, in the end, we will all pay for our health in one way or another. But being proactive and staying healthy is much cheaper in the long run and much more fun. Consider the statistics. As a senior, if you are no longer able to live independently, the average cost of an assisted care living facility is approximately $1800 to $5000 a month. Most seniors who find themselves in this predicament can no longer perform the basic tasks of taking care of themselves due to weak muscles, low energy endurance, arthritic bones, or balance issues. In contrast, a good treadmill might set you back $1000. A qualified trainer $65 an hour. A gym membership $100 a month. There is no comparison. As a trainer who specializes in working with seniors, I have perfected the fine art of targeting the exact exercise movements that will give my clients the

tools to stay afloat. I once trained a 90 year old woman in her own condo until she ultimately had to accept the fact that she needed more care. She lamented to me, “I guess I failed.”. On the contrary. She had worked hard to give herself 4 more years of living HER way. Sleeping when she wanted, eating what she wanted, DOING what she wanted. I call that a success. Looking back, I wish my father had invested not for us...but for him. I miss him. He crossed his fingers and hoped for good health while diligently planning financially for his demise. I can’t help my dad anymore. But my passion and my goal as an older adult fitness trainer is to motivate, educate and guide other seniors to invest in their health today, so that their families are able to love them for as long as possible! The Violet Hour, presented by FIDO will follow at 4 pm, also on YouTube, which is usually presented as part of the festival!
