dybugs. Once created, Bartley distributes the small packages throughout the borough of NDG, randomly placing one small bag at a time in various spots. Each bag contains a handful of the clay ladybugs, and two messages of hope that she helps will uplift spirits and spread joy. Batley’s business, Pocket Lady Bugs, was established in September of 2019 as a way to help support her family and give back to ‘Single Momtreal’, an organization that she says helped her when times were difficult. Until recently, Bartley

Tricia Bartley spreading joy one Ladybug at a time had been selling her ladybugs for $5 per set through social media and word of mouth. Sales have dropped

since the city shut down, but Bartley saw an opportunity to help. “...it is my nature fo help, and I knew that

there were people who needed that feeling of hope and togetherness. I have always tried to be a kind person and try

to lead by that example. I may not have a lot, but I do have a lot of love, and I enjoy making people happy,” she says. Her ladybugs have been all over the world, including Honduras, Australia, Peru, Germany, the United States, and several spots in Canada. Now she brings her ladybugs home to her neighborhood. So far, she has delivered 75 sets of ladybugs and plans to give upwards of 150 more. “I walk up and down my neighborhood, starting from Upper Lachine as far as Somerled and from Cavendish to Decarie. I always have one or two in my bag at all times, so if I go into a store, I will leave a set for store staff - just a small gesture to say thank you for all the

extra work they do during this difficult time.” The response to Bartley’s ladybugs has been positive. “I have received many messages from strangers through Facebook, email, and Instagram thanking me for the gift. I have also received messages asking if I could drop off a ladybug at a particular address to help somebody in need. If I can put a smile on someone’s face, then I have done what I set out to do.” To order your Pocket Ladybugs email: pocketladybugs@gmail.com

How washing your hands with soap and water kills coronavirus

he message from Canada's Federal Health officials, including Provin-

By Bonnie Wurst mtltimes.ca

cial and Municipal governments, is becoming louder and louder - asking everyone to stay home or respect the rules for 'physical distancing' if you have go out, even for just a walk. We are reaching a crisis point in the fight against the Covid-19 virus and if we are to win this battle, EVERYONE must abide by the rules and be vigilant in doing so. We are also being told to wash our hands with soap over and over again, until the message sinks into the very layers of our skin. Whether you count the recommended 20 seconds of washing or sing a tune like 'Row, row, row your boat' three times or Bon Jovi's 'Livin' On a Prayer' our hands are beginning to look like dried prunes, peeling like an eczema outbreak. Moisturizing lotions are effective in keeping the redness and itch at bay,

but only until we wash our hands again. So how does using soap kill the coronavirus? According to many health officials and medical experts, viruses and bacteria get on our hands from all types of surfaces, objects and from other people. Without thinking, we often end up touching our nose, mouth or our eyes, offering a way for the microbes to get into our bodies. Being more diligent in not doing so and washing our hands with soap and water properly and frequently can significantly stop that from happening. When washing, you must clean and scrub both the front and back of your hands, as well as each fingertip, underneath your nails and in between your fingers. Scientists explain that soap is comprised of pin-shaped molecules that have a 'hydrophilic head' that securely bonds with water, but also a 'hydrophobic tail' that avoids water, allowing the molecules to connect with fats and oils instead. In that form, the molecules interact

with other molecules and join up. Many viruses and bacteria, including coronaviruses, have what are called 'lipid membranes', like fats. They are studded with types of proteins giving them the ability to infect the cells in our body and keep the bacteria alive.Washing your hands with soap and water envelopes the bacterial microbes - and with the ability of the hydrophobic tails to avoid water and connect with fat and oils instead, they are able to lodge into the oily, lipid membranes of the virus, pulling them apart. Soap then traps the dirt and virus fragments in tiny bubbles called 'micelles', and then washes them away. The Covid-19 pandemic has challenged our daily lifestyles in many ways and unsettling to many people. By maintaining the practice of washing your hands properly and diligently, you can help in winning the fight against the virus - and potentially save your life and the life others. Be safe and be healthy.

The city also has some good news. Since a large part of the population, especially those in the at-risk group (people over 60) are now strongly recommended to stay home, the routine trips to the local grocery store are now being replaced by home delivery. Of course, this was a service available before, but most people preferred to go to the store and make their own selection of the goods wanted. Not anymore: home delivery has now become the norm for many people, bringing enormous pressure on those providing the service. Moreover, some small or medium-size stores didn't have a system in place for this method of serving customers. Montreal has come to the help of those merchants: "Selling online is

Montreal, like most cities around the world now, might be acquiring the looks of the one described in the novel by Albert Camus. Perhaps our city is less populated by statues of important heroes. Still, the other signs are increasingly present, as the pandemic continues its advance. Fewer cars circulate on the streets, fewer people are seen walking too. Definitely, the city life has been transformed by the coronavirus: no more restaurants, no movie theatres, all summer festivals have been cancelled. And this is only the beginning of this unexpected phenomenon that is threatening everyone's lives: the peak of the pandemic's effects is expected toward the end of April or first weeks in May. Paradoxically, while

By Bonnie Wurst mtltimes.ca their children's online activities - as they are being targeted by online predators in new and increasing ways. With children now home since schools were closed, not being able to play with their friends and restrictions on being outdoors, they are taking advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic and the increase in time children are spending online. These predators have been around for a long while, sitting somewhere in front of their computer screens - and in the darkness of their tortured minds, they spread their sickness like the virus itself. Yes, they are clearly suffering from a mental illness and perhaps even victims themselves, but any empathy towards them would be hardpressed - especially at a time like this. In a CTV report Arnold Guerin, Sergeant of the RCMP's Child Exploitation

Crime Centre said, “What we're seeing is online offenders, particularly in the area of child sexual exploitation, is they're changing their own behaviours and patterns because they know the kids are going to be home with increased screen time... you need to be involved in their digital life and you need to have good, solid, mature conversations with them about the potential risks that could happen." While parents shouldn't necessarily be alarmed, they should be vigilant,

he added. 'Parents can take advantage of technological safeguards like PARENTAL CONTROLS or CONSULT CYBERTIP.CA and PROTECTKIDSONLINE.CA for strategies on online safety'. “You definitely want to be involved in reviewing the privacy settings on the apps so you know what's being shared out. You have some comfort that you're doing the best you can to restrict private information." A recent news report from the Northwest Territories RCMP said

that 'danger' comes in many forms' and things for parents to be aware of include children being coerced or deceived into producing explicit images or video and adults arranging to meet and abuse young people. As well, you should also keep an eye on the games and apps your kids are using, ideally before they download them. Make sure privacy settings for online games and apps are at their highest level. If you can, keep electronic devices in a part of the home that everyone shares instead of behind a closed door in a child’s bedroom'. They

Kim Bruneau supports local businesses by offering $1500 give away brands. When she reached out to them, they immediately jumped on board even though these companies are going through a rough time themselves. Kim knew that they would still want to give people something to look forward to in these darker days. Boutique Tozzi opened the parade with their trendy store located on Crescent street. Shan followed suit and did not hesitate for a second. A household name internationally reknowned for their swimwear and ready-

to-wear, that design and manufacture right here in Quebec. During this crisis, they transformed their supply chain to manufacture gowns and masks to help our medical teams. Rudsak, whose name needs no introduction, gladly joined in offering their edgy jackets, apparel & bags. Kyodan Active, in business in Montreal since 2006 will take care of your sportswear needs. Last but not least, Bulle Groupe, a distributor of high quality shoes, boots and sandals, who opened their first store in Quebec

city just recently, will cover footwear fancies. To conclude, radio & TV host Benoit Gagnon & actress & TV host Annie-Soleil Proteau proudly joined the giveaway and are spreading the word through their different media platforms. To enter the giveaway, go on any of the participating brands' or ambassadors' social media pages (Instagram or Facebook) and follow the rules. Good luck and a big thank you to our generous companies. Let us encourage them!

day we received one in the form of an email, a happy, light spirited, sincere testimonial saying how much she loved us and thanking us for doing what we do. Perhaps Sabrina is at home. Perhaps she is ‘catching up’ on things she had meant to do and never got around to. Whatever the reason she decided to write to us now, it brought many smiles to all of us here at Earth to Body. Hi Earth to Body, I don't know why I never did this, because I've been using your products for at least a year now. But I wanted to share with you how much I love your products, and the fact that you're local (ish) and Canadian, and seem to be a big family. Ibought your first product at a Craft show in Ottawa in 2019, and I bought the

neem salve. I was having issues with a dry, itchy spot around my nose that would keep coming back every so often, and man, neem oil made it disappear and I swear it has not come back again. I got so excited I legit started using neem oil EVERYWHERE, my face, my hair, just a mad woman. My fiancée hates the smell and calls it the "onion oil" but I, being a lover of all things natural and funky smells, adore it. Needless to say, his dislike of the oil did not make me stop using it lol, so now I warn him when I'm wearing it lol :) After using neem, I said "why not try everything else", so I went on a shopping spree on your website and now I have emu oil (holy sh_t! I love it), tamanu oil, the eye oil, ESP shampoo soap, facial toner, ACV rinse, zinc oxide, moisturizing lotion and skincare moisturizer and I plan on buying more stuff soon :) more soaps,

sheamu, essential oils, hand sanitizer, more neem (I ran out). So yeah, please never stop making your products, they're amazing. They make me feel amazing and knowing that I'm nurturing my skin with clean products is so worth it. I don't have to be afraid of my cats licking my hands after I put cream on my face, because I know the stuff won't kill them haha. I've already accepted the fact that we're all going to age and get wrinkled, so now all I want is to get old gracefully and show my white hairs and laugh lines and wrinkles proudly, because I've lived my life to the fullest and laughed a lot :) THANK YOU GUYS!!! KEEP IT UP!! AND STAY SAFE DURING THESE CRAZY TIMES! Also, thank you for still selling products online right now despite the situation! PS: I don't know if you

have any suggestions. but I thought I'd ask. Do you have any tricks or tips for allergy season??? :) Also, I love your blog! Best Regards, Sabrina Thank you all who continue to support us. We love you and miss seeing you at the shows and our shop. Please continue to call, to write and share. Be safe and well. BTW…we did have one suggestion for Sabrina and allergy season. Fame career on the ice decides to transcend their playing skills and talents behind the bench as a coach, doesn't usually pan out. One rare exception to that case was Hector "Toe" Blake. A native of Sudbury, Ontario as one of 13 siblings, Blake started his NHL playing career in 1935 as part of the storied Montreal Ma-

roons. The following year, he joined the rival Montreal Canadiens. And before his playing career ended thanks to a fractured leg in 1948, Blake served as team captain, led the team to two Stanley Cup championships, won the Hart and Lady Byng trophies, and was one-third of the Habs' famed "Punch Line" along with Elmer Lach and Maurice Richard. Then came phase two of his pro hockey career. After getting his feet wet helming minor league hockey teams in Houston, Buffalo and Valleyfield behind the bench, Blake was signed to be head coach of the Canadiens in 1955. During his 13 years as its coach, Blake led the Habs to eight Stanley Cups, including the remarkable record run of five consecutive Cups between 1956 and 1960, before he hung up

his trademark fedora in 1968. From then until his death from the ravages of Alzheimer's Disease in 1995, Toe Blake became a highly regarded and much respected figure in the Canadiens organization, whether as a goodwill ambassador, front office executive, or a special team consultant, not to mention owner and proprietor of his self-named tavern in the heart of downtown Montreal for 31 years. But what was Toe Blake really like, and what motivated and drove him to the pinnacle of success in the NHL both on the ice and behind the bench? That question is certainly answered with flying colours in Paul Logothetis' book Toe Blake, which is the first biography to be published about this Hall of Famer.

First of all, Blake had a love of hockey from the time he was a boy growing up in the town of Coniston, Ontario, which provided him a means of escape from the Great Depression, and when he was a teen, worked in the mines of Coniston to raise enough money to buy himself a pair of skates. And working in the mines every summer helped him to become a physically strong hockey player through each season he played. Second, according to Logothetis, was that Blake was a firm believer in the principle of "winning is everything", and strongly instilled that feeling to his teammates and players he coached. He also subscribed to the idea of "fire-wagon hockey", the offensive, attacking approach to the game that became the signature style of the Canadiens. Third, Blake had a great deal of faith in his players, and encouraged them to develop their own style of play within a team structure, as well as driving them hard -- but fair -- as they were in the midst

www.mtltimes.ca

of developing their signature playing styles (according to one former Montreal newspaper sports editor, who said 40 years ago that Blake drove his players hard at every practice "...till they puked."). Former Habs coach Scotty Bowman, who was interviewed for this book and got plenty of coaching tips from Blake during the early 60s, believed that Blake's faith in his players was the key to the Habs' mega success during that legendary era. "He knew the value of every player on the team. That was his strong suit. He stressed little things to me: every player is important, especially if you get in the playoffs, ... That's why players that weren't stars performed above their ability -- he was able to glean that from them," says Bowman. And cleverly using contemporary newspaper articles and interviews, as well as interviews with many of the players who played alongside him and for him, we get a complete picture of a man who was not only highly respected in hockey circles, but also a complex,

tortured individual who dealt with many personal issues outside of his coaching duties at the Forum, such as his volatile temper, his helping his wife Betty battle cancer, playing favourites with his daughters (younger daughter Mary Jane over older daughter Joan), and the pressures he received from fans and the press when the Habs were eliminated early from the playoffs between 1961 and 1964. And one of the sad aspects of Blake's later life was that his legacy was practically forgotten and neglected, which were exemplified by such incidents as his vast collection of hockey memorabilia being rejected by the Hockey Hall of Fame (in which most of it ended up being trashed or stolen), and the fact that his Canadiens jersey number 6 was not officially retired and raised to the rafters of the Forum and the Bell Center like his Punch Line teammates Lach and Richard. Paul Logothetis' biography of Toe Blake is a fascinating study of an all-round hockey person whose skills as a player and coach helped to build the Montreal Canadiens to become the iconic franchise that they are regarded as today. Hopefully, future generations of hoc, years fans who read this book will appreciate Toe Blake's lasting contributions to the game before they become permanently forgotten; and one way to do that is to raise that number 6 to the rafters of the Bell Center. f you are a buyer and just found your perfect home at the right price, the next By Eleni Akrivos mtltimes.ca

logical and crucial step is the home inspection. Are you ready? As a seller, you may be excited to have an agreed upon offer to purchase, yet to move forward with the transaction, your home has to pass the inspection. What will the inspector find? Most buyers and even sellers, now see the value of home inspections. Although tedious, if used for what they’re intended, home inspections can save both sides of a real estate deal many headaches down the road. There are many parties involved during and after the inspections, and it helps when everyone has a “realistic” approach to the entire process. It also helps, when everyone acts in “good faith”, and does not use the home inspection as a pretext to a definite price reduction. What inspections offer: A professional opinion and report on the overall condition of the home including everything that is visible and accessible. What inspections do not offer: An exhaustive expert report on every system in the home, whether accessible or hidden. So who is

Home Inspection advice for buyers and sellers

responsible for what during and after the inspection process? For Buyers: Inspections should reassure you that your new home is safe, functional and not going to become a “money pit”. - Be vigilant and do your homework by reviewing the Sellers Declaration with your broker. - Ask any pertinent questions about the home prior to the inspection. - Get ready to block out at least 2 to 3 hours

on inspection day, depending on size of home. - Take your time and review any concerns with inspector and brokers. The Buyer’s Broker: Attending inspections is a must, and good brokers will be right by your side during the process. - They should have a good basic knowledge by knowing what is important in the big picture, yet not pretend to know the job of the inspector. - If you’re getting a very fair price on the home, your broker will

likely advise you not to bother the Seller for small repairs. - If the inspection reveals major or serious flaws in the home, your broker can advise you on how to proceed. The Seller: Inspections are part of the process, and if you can be present during the inspection to answer any questions, things may go smoother than you think. - You can choose to have a PRE-SALE inspection before selling - Make certain necessary repairs prior to

selling - Offer the home at a reasonable price taking into consideration imminent repairs needed (roof, windows etc..) The Sellers Broker: May also be present at the inspection report, as the eyes and ears for the sellers. - Is very familiar with the property and can handle questions that come up - Will need to be ready to manage any unknowns or surprises that may arise. - Although this broker represents the Seller,

their main purpose is to collaborate with all parties for a smooth transaction The Inspector: A good inspector will provide explanations and point out things that need to be addressed and will not be an alarmist but will remain impartial. - In Quebec, your realtor can recommend a list of licensed inspectors who qualify with certain criteria. - Should definitely be chosen wisely, maybe through a referral. - Their main purpose is to inspect the home and provide you with real time knowledge, as well as a detailed report afterwards. It’s important to note, that having a family member with “construction experience”, or a friend who is a contractor be present during inspections, may be well intended but could lead to unnecessary negative consequences, as these individuals are not licensed property inspectors. Most inspections go smoothly, but some can also be the beginning of tough negotiations ahead. Make sure that you try to stay reasonable and work together with all parties of the transaction and come up with solutions that make everyone feel confident about moving forward.
