ne driver got fed up enough with the damage done to his car by a pothole, that when his claim with the city for $1200 in repair bills was turned down - he decided to take the City of Montreal to small claims court and sue them. Erik Choueke, who happens to be a lawyer, was driving on Cote-St-Luc Road during the winter of 2017 when he hit the pothole that broke both the axels on his car.The hole was more than six feet in diameter and between six inches and one foot deep. He claimed an amount of $2,218.28, not only to cover the cost of repairs but also for the loss of time, stress, cost of alter-

nate transportation and inconvenience. He was only awarded a total of $945.30, that included 5% in interest and $150 for legal fees recently - but he won. He beat the city. According to CAAQuebec, you 'cannot hold a municipality or the provincial government liable for material damage to your vehicle’s tires or suspension system due to road conditions. But despite that legal restriction, you can still sue a municipality or the Quebec Ministry of Transport for carelessness, negligence, or misconduct. The burden of proof, however, rests with the driver'. You would also have to prove it was a case of carelessness, negligence or misconduct, need evidence (i.e. - witnesses, pictures, lack of warning signs), a repair estimate from a recognized auto shop and prove the pothole had al-

ready been reported to the city before the incident. *For details go to: https://www.caaquebec.c om/en/on-the-road/advice/tips-and-tricks/tipand-trick/show/sujet/poth ole-damage-claims-andcompensation Perhaps it is time for the city to take more responsibility. Drivers in Montreal have been dodging an ever increasing number and size of potholes on the roads for decades. It is not only because of the weather and freeze-thaw patterns of the seasons, but it is also due to neglect and bad planning not just by the present city administration, but the previous administrations as well. This past season has proven to be one of the worst, causing all types of serious, costly damage to cars and it is the owner who has to pay for it all.

Rainbow Railroad helping to save LGBTQ lives

S

ince 2006, the Rainbow Railroad, a Canadian charitable organization, has been helping to save the lives of LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,Transgender and Queer) people around the world who are trying to escape violence and persecution in their home countries.

By Bonnie Wurst mtltimes.ca

Since their founding they have helped more than 500 individuals escape from places like the Caribbean, Africa and the Middle East and find a new life in safer countries in Europe and North America. The name of the organization was inspired by the Underground Railroad - a secret network of abolitionists who helped many thousands of African Americans escape from enslavement in the American South to free Northern states or Canada during the early 19th century. It is an appropriate name, given some of the same horrific situations LGBTQ people experience in over 71 countries, including being beaten and execution. The receive thousands of requests each year from those desperate to escape, often when their very lives are being threatened - and thanks to the Rainbow Railroad and its many volunteers and supporters, they are given a new life in a safe place where they can feel free to be who they were born to be. They work with an international network of LGBTQ groups and safe houses who refer people to them and they take care of paying for air flights and obtain• June 1, 2019

ing visas. Everything is funded through private donations and airline miles. According to the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, everyone has a right to freedom, safety and dignity. On the Rainbow Railroad website they cite information from the International Lesbian and Gay Association stating that 'in 72 countries, queer and trans people face extreme levels of discrimination, violence and persecution. They can be criminally charged under anti-gay laws that can result in life in prison. In eight countries, the death penalty can be applied. In these places, LGBTQ people are frequently outed by the media, attacked by mobs, sexually assaulted and rounded up in state-sanctioned crackdowns, after which they are tortured while in custody'. Here in Canada, LGBTQ (or in a longer more inclusive form of 'LGBTQQIA' - lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual) people are

considered no different than any other person. And except for some extremely conservative factions with closed minds, who see it as 'against the natural order of things', we can be proud. In our country LGBTQ people can get married, adopt children, receive all social benefits given to every Canadian and feel free to live their lives without any fear of prosecution.

Our Pride celebrations and parades are some of the most highly attended events - with rainbow flags held high! The Rainbow Railroad addresses a very serious and important need. Being a charitable organization they rely on donations and there are several ways you can support this initiative. It costs them $10,000 to help an LGBTQ person find a

Free Report Reveals How to Avoid Getting Stuck Owning Two Homes

MONTREAL - West Island - Every month, thousands of homeowners are faced with the stressful dilemma of whether to buy first or sell first. You see, if you buy before selling, you could run the risk of owning two homes. Or, just as bad, if you sell first, you could end up homeless. It's what insiders in the industry call the Real Estate Catch 22, and it's an extremely anxious position to find yourself in. This financial and emotional tightrope is one you usually have to walk alone because most agents have no way of helping you with this predicament. But one local realtor is using a unique Guaranteed Sale Program which solves this dilemma. This program guarantees the sale of your present home before you take possession of your new one. If your home doesn't sell in 120 days, they will buy it from you themselves for the previously agreed price ensuring that you never get caught in the Real Estate

Catch 22. Before you hire any professional, you should research the market to find out who can do the best job for you. When interviewing agents, find out what kind of guarantee they are willing to give you with respect to the selling of your home. Unfortunately, you'll find that most agents simply cannot make such a guarantee. To help you learn more about this program and how it can make your move less stressful, a FREE special report has been prepared entitled "How to Avoid Getting Stuck with Two Homes". Canada celebrates Pride with limited-edition rainbow inspired cans benefiting Rainbow Railroad

n their continued support of inclusivity and the LGBTQ+ community, Bud Light Canada is partnering with Canadian-based international charity Rainbow Railroad, that has been supporting LGBTQ+ people at risk around the world since 2006, to launch a limitededition, rainbow inspired can to celebrate Pride. Bud Light will donate up to $1.45 for every limited-edition case purchased to Rainbow Railroad, assisting in their efforts to help people flee state-sanctioned persecution and find pathways to safety with emergency travel support. In addition to swapping out the cans' iconic Bud Light blue for a colour scheme inspired by the rainbow Pride flag, Bud Light has also adjusted its brand name's logo to emphasize the letters LGBT+. "Bud Light is a beer that brings people together – it's truly made for all, so we're excited to be leading an initiative that not

only celebrates inclusivity, but that also makes a positive impact," says Todd Allen, vice-president, marketing, Labatt Breweries of Canada. "We have been a long-standing supporter of Pride in Canada for over 20 years, and we're looking forward to continuing to engage more people and have further positive impact within the community." "We are so proud and inspired to partner with Labatt this Pride season on a stunning rainbow can," said Executive Director Kimahli Powell. "It's generous support like this that makes our lifesaving work possible. And that support is needed more than ever before." "In 2018, we helped almost 200 people travel from fear to freedom," says Powell. "But what we remain focused on is the people we can't help because of lack of funds. Already in 2019, we've had more than 1,000 requests for help, putting us on track to more than double the number of re-

quests last year." Beyond the partnership with Rainbow Railroad, as an official sponsor of Toronto Pride, Bud Light will also be announcing a series of other initiatives throughout the month of June, culminating in their interactive footprint at Toronto Pride, and their float at the Pride Parade on June 23rd. Margaret Trudeau will make her Just For Laughs debut with “Certain Woman of an Age” that will have a three-night run at the Gesu on July 25, 26 and 27. The show is actually a candid conversation, in which Trudeau will recount her life before, during and after her time at 24 Sussex Drive, as well as her battle with having a bipolar disorder. “This show is based on the more than 500 appearances I have done as a public speaker, in which I helped to break the stigma of mental health issues,” said Ms. Trudeau during a brief interview. “The message I want to convey is that it’s OK to reach out for help, because that’s where the healing begins. And humour can play a big part in that healing, and what a better way to advocate that than at a comedy festival.” Another brand new addition to the line-up is

“She the People”, a smash hit touring sketch comedy show that’s being presented by the ladies of Second City Toronto at the Centaur Theatre for eight performances from July 22 to 25, as well as July 26 and 27. “This show has sketches, songs and even some improv that contains relatable material, but from a women’s perspective. However, you don’t have to be a woman to come and see this show. It’s for everyone,” said Carly Heffernan, who developed the concept of “She the People” at Second City in Chicago two years ago, and serves as its co-writer and director. “And the women who make up the show’s cast are to me like the Spice Girls of comedy. Women are making great strides in the comedy world today, but there is still a need to make a space for us there.Take for instance heckling; every comic goes through it. But the difference is with female comics, that heckling can take the form of a type of discrimination in which we become objectified because of our bodies, and that’s a type of microaggression.” Charles Decarie, Groupe Juste pour rire’s new President and CEO, kicked off the press con-

ference by remarking how the festival has become a global leader in the comedy world, and will continue its humour-centric mission. “We will continue to reach excellence at what we do best, which is to gather people from around the world and make them laugh,” he said. Other festival line-up additions that were announced by Mr. Hills at the press conference include: comedian Wanda Sykes hosting her own gala at Place des Arts on July 26; a stand-up show hosted by Blake Griffin at the L’Olympia called “comedy. By Blake” on July 25; SNL alumnus Fred Armisen will make his first appearance at JFL with “Comedy For Musicians but Everyone is Welcome” on July 27 at the L’Olympia; comedian Nick Kroll, who starred in his own Comedy Central sketch show “The Kroll Show” and will be heard on the upcoming animated feature “Secret Life of Pets 2” will do a solo stand-up show for one night only – July 25 – also at the L’Olympia; and Stephen Glover (aka the popular stand-up comedian and stunt performer “SteveO”) will bring his multimedia comedy show that’s part of his Bucket List Tour to the L’Olympia on July 24.

Just For Laughs sticks to

their comedy roots by offering a number of shows during this year’s festival to promote Canada’s finest and upcoming comedy talent with such shows as “Comedy Night in Canada” (July 24 at Club Soda), “Live from L’Astral”, a series of four new specials that will be taped for Crave TV that will be headlined by a number of rising Canadian comics including Aisha Brown and Graham Key (July 22 and 23 at L’Astral); and the long-running and vitally important New Faces series will have a Canadian slant to it as “New Faces: Canada” marks its debut on July 26 at the Salle Ludger-Duvernay at the historic Monument National Theatre on St. Laurent Boulevard. There will be no shortage of comedy podcasts to hit the Just For Laughs stage this summer, as live tapings will take place featuring a wide variety of podcasts, including “You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes”, “Gettin’ Better with Ron Funches”, “The Comedian’s Comedian with Stuart Goldsmith”, “Glowing Up with Esther and Caroline” and “How Did This Get Made?”, the award-wining podcast in which Paul Scheer, Jason Mantzoukas and June Diane Raphael, along with some of their comedian friends, will discuss the best in very bad movies at a live taping at the L’Olympia on July 27. The unveiling of the OFF-JFL show line-up and list of performers is scheduled for June 11; and further Just For Laughs programming announcements will take place in the coming weeks. Perhaps that would discourage city officials from attending events abroad, since swimming the Atlantic to attend conferences in Europe, for instance, would not entice many bureaucrats. Premier Legault and Mayor Plante however, despite their interest in developing a green economy including public transportation, still don't see eye to eye on the proposed Pink Line, a new metro line that would connect Lachine with Montreal North, crossing downtown and connecting to the planned REM. One structural problem with these buses is the time they require to recharge their batteries. But there are other problems too, according to a report by Alon Levy published on citylab.com in January this year, regarding the battery-electric buses or BEBs: "There are reasons for skepticism. So far, it looks like BEBs struggle when it's too cold (below freezing) or too hot, and on routes with hills. The global frontier of public-transit innovation in Western Europe is cautious about adopting BEBs and prefers a hybrid form of trolleybuses and battery-electric technology called in-motion charging, or IMC. Some Swiss cities are adding trolley wire at low cost while using IMC (In motion electric charging) to extend the range of their existing trolleybuses several miles beyond the wire."

Maybe an electric future for Montreal should consider this new technology for public transit, especially since our city presents two of the obstacles facing the battery-electric bus: extreme cold weather and many hills. Another important change toward the scenario proposed by Premier Legault would be the electrification of all the current suburban trains, which –except for the Two Mountain train– still use diesel locomotives. That would greenly move all of us.

Beyond its mission to offer the ultimate adult hockey experience for all its members, the LFA also plays an important role in social engagement, particularly with Sun Youth. In recent years, the league has supported various programs, raising close to $ 43,000 for the organization. Not only does the LFA help raise money for the SLAP program, they also collect funds and

food for the organization's food bank, playing a leading role in raising awareness of food insecurity, poverty and social exclusion. Sun Youth's Board of Directors, management, staff and volunteers wish to thank everyone involved in the LFA's 20172018 Final Championship Game for bringing such a nice contribution to the organization. On behalf of the many children of the SLAP program who will benefit from this generosity, thank you for making a significant difference in their lives! June 1, 2019 •

A Night at the Fringe-for-All 2019

n a flurry of multicoloured confetti shot out of three disposable confetti cannons, the 29th edition of the St.Ambroise Montreal Fringe Festival – and Montreal’s summer festival season for 2019 -- was officially kicked off. And the Fringe Fest began in its own inimitable way with their ultimate preview showcase called the “Fringe-ForAll”, which was held on May 27 at Club Soda. A record number of 63 local shows – whether they be comedies, dance, musicals, dramas, solo shows or experimental shows in English or French – had exactly two minutes each to show off to the packed Club Soda crowd what they had to offer if the gathered fringers decided to catch their respective shows at the festival. So armed with our copies of the festival program book and a three-page Fringe-For-All line-up sheet, we were ready and raring to find out how we were going to spend the next three weeks fringing it up. With the evening’s emcees Kenny Streule, Jessica Beauplat and Anton May dressed up in their black tie best as our guides, we were treated to a sometimes unpredictable, yet

always fascinating, three and a half hours worth of Fringe Fest show previews. As we eagerly jotted down our notes and comments of each show preview on our line-up sheets (which I did with an adamant “yes” or “no”, or a simple question mark if I was left feeling a little wishy-washy about a certain show), a few things crossed my mind about what I witnessed at this year’s “Fringe-For-All”.

First of all, I never seen so many clown or clown-related shows that were part of this year’s festival (four in total, including “Why Are You Afraid of Clowns?”, in which this clown in question was like he was straight out of the pages of Steven King’s “It”). Second, unlike previous Fringe-For-Alls, there were very few objects thrown at the audience or spilled on the stage (with the exception of the fun size chocolates that were

Remodel your pool

tossed at us – which I caught one of them – during the preview of “Lear in Limbo”). Third, some shows had some rather unique ways to promote themselves (which was best exemplified by Theatre Sans Froid’s production “Silence”, which was basically two cast members rolling out a large banner with the show’s title on it, and was enthusiastically greeted with shushes and silent applause from the audi-

ence). And fourth, I found a new appreciation for puppet shows (“The Adventures of Humphrey Beauregret”) and magic shows (“Me, Myself & Illusion”), and discovered that they are not only for kids’ birthday parties. So when the lights went up three and a half hours later, and I filled my briefcase with my share of promotional fliers and post cards, here are some early best bets that I plan to catch at this year’s

Fringe Festival: “Le Venin de Jocaste”, “Why Are You Afraid of Clowns?”, “A Brief History of Time”, “The Adventures of Humphrey Beauregret”, “Magnificence”, “Edging with Mike”, “Me, Myself & Illusion”, and “The Man Behind the Curtain”. Happy fringing, everyone! For more information about these and other Fringe Festival shows, go to: www.montrealfringe.ca , or call 514849-FEST.

Great white and rosé French wines to try

T

here are those consumers who are hopefully devoted to the charms of red wine. I can't blame them because me as well fall under the spell of a spicy Grenache or a robust Cabernet. However, each wine has its place for every occasion, mood or temperature. As the mercury finally starts to rise, all that my heart desires is to sip wine and eat food outside. The sun and the blue clear sky makes me long for salads and delicious poultry, seafood and seafood dishes on the grill. Why the feeling?. Perhaps is the nostalgia of summer in Italy, Spain or my childhood in Venezuela. Anyways, from now to late september, I will be sipping whites and aromatic roses mostly. The reds still have their place at my table but they act more alike as secondary characters in the great

Natural oils can transform your skin

P

By Martha Shannon mtltimes.ca

erfect, natural oils can transform your skin. They are becoming the rage in our cosmetic world. In the past, they were touted as a no-no. The reverting back to natural. When synthetics hit the market, synthetic oils became part of the package. Minerals oils are comedogenic meaning they can clog and block the pores. Not a good thing. When we believed the adage “Don’t wear oils on your skin’, we tossed all oils, opting for the creams and other blends being offered on the market. MOSTLY SYNTHETIC. But now we understand that natural oils do not clog the pores. Oils contain fatty acids A healthy facial and body oil can restore lost fatty acids to help rehydrate and protect the skin. It is often recommended to use an oil and then a moisturizer, the later containing the necessary water missing in an oil. Both are needed by the skin. Oils do lubricate and nourish. To hydrate, an allnatural toner is an excellent option, especially if you do not wish to use other moisturizers or serums. Our facial toner contains organic rosewater. Wash. Spritz. Oil.

If you like to further treat the skin, a good moisturizer can work. But, beware, if you use a beautiful oil like emu or argan on the skin, and then apply a chemical laden moisturizer, you have reintroduced once again the chemicals that you are wanting to avoid. It is difficult to find a natural cream on the commercial market, because when the mix is an oil and water, it can go ‘bad' faster than a pure oil, so strong preservatives are often used. Imagine keeping a face cream on your dresser for months on end, even years. Now that is scary. A naturally handmade cream, like ours, is best refrigerated or used up with a few months. Use daily. Eg: Skin Care Moisturizer, Argan Moisturizer,Tamanu Cream. All contain pure, unrefined oils. Oils for oily skin Do not be afraid of the word ‘oil’ even if your skin is oily. Argan is a light oil and a good choice. You might also like rosehip. Our Revitalizing Eye Oil contains rosehip, camellia, argan, sea buckthorn and carrot which is amazing on all skins, but especially light if you tend to have oily skin. People love it around the eye area, but have discovered its use all over the face. For acne prone skin A common solution is to ‘dry out the acne’ but this is not the way to go.

Acne prone skin has an off balance of water to oil ratio. We have an amazing blend in our Skin Manager (Emu, Black Spruce, St John’s Wort) which people love on their skin. Cleanse properly first It makes no sense to choose a good oil for the skin and then contaminate the skin with a poor soap choice. Make sure your cleansing method is as wise as your oil choice. For example, emu oil and argan oil contain omega fatty acids and are excellent choices on the skin. You might also like to buy jojoba, kukui, or moringa which can be purchased at a health food store. But clean first with natural, homemade soaps (without dyes and fragrances) to complement your wise oil choice. Oils can of course be applied all over the body. We made a unique blend that includes marula: Spoil Me Body Oil Experiment to see what is good for your skin type. Whether you are dry, normal or a combo, good, healthy, pure unrefined oils can transform the skin. Simple and extraordinary. Sleep deprivation and memory loss! M emory declines with age, but it was not clear why. A new study may provide part of the answer. The report, posted by the journal Nature Neuroscience, suggests that

By Donna Byrne mtltimes.ca

structural brain changes occurring naturally over time interfere with sleep quality, which in turn blunts the ability to store memories for the long term. The findings suggest that one way to slow memory decline in aging adults is to improve sleep, specifically the so-called slowwave phase, which constitutes about a quarter of a normal night’s slumber. Doctors cannot reverse structural changes that occur with age but there are ways to improve sleep

16

patterns. In some studies when sleep was improved there was improved memory. Dr. Paller said that a whole array of changes occurs across the brain during aging and that sleep was only one factor affecting memory function. But he said the study told “a convincing story, I think: that atrophy is related to slow-wave sleep, which we know is related to memory performance. So it’s a contributing factor.” “The analysis showed that the differences were due not to changes in capacity for memories, but to differences in sleep quality,” said Bryce A. Mander, a postdoctoral fellow at Berkeley and the lead author of the study. “Essentially, with age, you lose tissue in this prefrontal area,” Dr. Walker said. “You get less quality deep sleep, and have less opportunity to consolidate new memories.” Regularly catching only a few hours of sleep can hinder metabolism and hormone production in a way that is similar to the effects of aging and the early stages of diabetes. Chronic sleep loss may speed the onset or increase the severity of agerelated conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high

blood pressure, obesity, and memory loss. The researchers showed that just one week of sleep deprivation altered participants’ hormone levels and their capacity to metabolize carbohydrates. People who trade sleep for work or play may get used to it and feel less fatigued but are, none the less, sleep deprived. During sleep-deprivation, the researchers also found that the sleep-deprived men had higher

nighttime concentrations of the hormone cortisol, which also helps regulate blood sugar, and lower levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone. These raised cortisol levels mimic levels that are often seen in older people, and may be involved in age-related insulin resistance and memory loss. Sleep debts are like stress. Given all of the studies that show that we need sleep and we need a good quality of sleep, I am

www.mtltimes.ca

shocked to hear how many people do not sleep well or for enough hours on a regular basis. Some say that they are restless and toss and turn. Others say that pain keeps them awake and so many say that the stress in their lives is the culprit. All have the same effect…... We are ageing before our time and developing agerelated diseases at younger ages. I have talked about what stress does to our bodies and the rela-

tionship between stress and disease. Now by not sleeping we add to the stress and guess what?? Our health and every dimension of our lives suffer…. Our work, our play, our friends and family. arlier this January, Montreal Expos fans past and present breathed a collective sigh of relief – and uttered a collective “It’s about time” – when it was announced that All-Star stolen base king Tim “Rock” Raines finally garnered enough votes that earned him induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. And it all came about after his 10th and final time during the eligibility period for potential inductees. “Entry into the Hall of Fame is the culmination of a life’s work. My journey to Cooperstown started when I picked up a bat and glove for the first time when I was five years old and continued in ways I never dreamed of,” writes Raines in his recently published memoir Rock Solid. If you were an Expos fan throughout the 1980s, you couldn’t help but notice Raines’ presence on the diamond, especially after a base hit, when he was leading off the bag and ready to pounce, so that he can steal second with lightning speed (which he succeeded most of the time). The excitement that “Rock” brought to the Expos with his base stealing prowess throughout that decade – coupled with the talents of teammates Andre Dawson and the late Gary Carter – helped the Expos to a number of winning seasons (and a National League East title in 1981), and earned it the moniker “Team of the 80s”. In his book, Raines recounts the good times – and the frustrations – he experienced as a member

18

Rock Solid by Tim Raines of the Expos on and off the field, which will certainly bring back a great deal of fond memories for those fans who caught their share of Expos

games at the Olympic Stadium. As well, Raines recounts with a great deal of candor about his cocaine habit that nearly derailed his career in 1982. He admits that being a rookie player in the majors, and

By Stuart Nulman mtltimes.ca

barely in his 20s and starting to earn a major league salary, made him an easy victim to fall into the trap of fast living and constant partying, not to mention indulging in the drug of choice of major league players before steroids

emerged (he even revealed that he carried packets of cocaine in the back pocket of his uniform, and ended up sliding headfirst when he stole bases). And he credits the help and support of his Expos teammates and front office staff to help him on the road towards kicking the habit before it destroyed his abilities and his life. “Drugs don’t free you. They greatly limit you,” he writes. “After I kicked the habit, I vowed to play every game in the most uninhibited manner possible. The only white lines I wanted to see were those on a baseball field.” And Raines certainly played baseball in that promised uninhibited manner through his more than 20 years as a major leaguer. Not only did he rack up those stolen bases (which ranked him as one of the top base stealers in the game, along with Ricky Henderson and Vince Coleman), but he also proved himself to be quite capable as a hitter and outfielder when his base stealing abilities slowed down later in his career. He also chronicles his post-Expos years as a member of the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees during the 90s with plenty of candid details, especially when he played alongside future Hall of Famer Frank Thomas and Hall of Famer-to-be Derek Jeter (not to mention earning him three World Series with the Yankees: two as a player in 1996 and 1998, and one as a coach in 2009). Another thing that you learn about Raines is his strong sense of family,

montrealchimneys@gmail.com

both on and off the field. This is well exemplified as he recounts his efforts during the latter part of his career to play a ball game on the same field as his son Tim, Jr. (who was carving out an impressive baseball career for himself in the minor leagues). This was accomplished in 2001, during a spring training game when

Raines returned to the Expos for the final time and his son was playing for the Baltimore Orioles. Rock Solid is indeed a rock solid baseball memoir of one of the most honest, entertaining players the Expos have ever had on their roster. His vast love of the game, the people whom he played alongside with, and his

family is quite genuine and is exhibited quite vividly throughout the pages of his book. Tim Raines has given Expos fans a lot to cheer about when he graced the field throughout the 1980s, and I am sure many of those fans will be cheering loudly for him this July, when accepts his induction plaque in Cooperstown.
