Hustle & Heart with Natasha Gargiulo and Maddy K

or the fourth consecutive year, on February 19th, at the Rialto Theatre, powerhouse duo Natasha Gargiulo and Maddy Kojakian (Maddy K) are hosting Hustle & Heart; an intimate speaker series highlighting trailblazing women throughout Canada.

By Alyssa De Rosa mtltimes.ca

These two make an inspiring duo, both being trailblazing women themselves. Maddy K is founder of Maddy K Events and producer of the Bridal Boudoir. She’s a genius event planner and business coach providing

clients with the utmost attention. Natasha Gargiulo has been in the entertainment industry for years. She’s currently the Morning show host on Virgin Radio Montreal and a reporter on Entertainment Tonight Canada. Both of these women are hardworking moms who know what it means to hustle with a lot of heart. “We still hustle with a lot of heart,” explains Natasha Gargiulo. “We feel that women who have this ambition and drive are the women who are successful,” she says. This series helps women who have had successful in their lives talk about the realness and rawness of their careers and all the struggles they may have faced along the way. “It doesn’t matter if you make a lot of money, or any at all,” Gargiulo describes. “If you’re pursuing what you love and are happy while doing it, that makes you a successful woman.” The event came to fruition a couple years ago when both Maddy and Natasha were coming back from a trip together. They had both gone through obstacles in their

lives and thought about a way to help women find the same peace they had found on their trip. Low and behold the inspiration for Maddy K inspired retreats. “We had a four-day experience retreat for women who could make time for themselves. What

they felt was empowering and life changing during these retreats.” But as Gargiulo continues to explain, not everyone could get away for a retreat, so the duo needed a better alternative to get women together and inspire.Their solution: Hustle & Heart women’s night. It’s one night where women can go out, have a glass of wine and talk. “It’s very intimate so women feel they can open up more and it really feels like you’re having a conversation with your girlfriends, Gargiulo describes. This year the five women on the forefront are some of Canada’s realest hustlers. Natasha Koifman, President of NKPR who is based out of Toronto with offices in New York City is the founder of a full-service public relations, artist management and digital agency. Through all this hustle and success, she’s managed to lend her time to philanthropic initiatives, helping empower women by building schools in Haiti. Jamie Orchard, Senior anchor and the TV face of Montreal news has over 30 years experience in the male-dominated media industry. She’s managed to do a lot of philanthropic initiatives in Montreal while being a mom to two boys and working full time. She’s been there for some of the city’s biggest stories: the Dawson shooting and the ice storm just to name a few. She was named on of Montreal’s most remarkable women by the Board of Trade of Montreal. Nannette de Gaspe Beaubien, founder and CEO of NNTT Beauté. She’s the Executive Chair of Biomod Concepts &

www.mtltimes.ca

Brand Founder. A well-educated woman in Bio tech who knows everything about the industry developed her own luxury cosmetic brand company. She’s been Vice Chair at T Investment Corporation, Strategic Advisor at Holt Renfrew and the board of the National Research Council of Canada. Solange Tuyishime, born and raised in East Africa before escaping war and genocide at age 13. Since then, she’s dedicated her life to children and women in underprivileged communities. She won Miss Canada International in 2006, Miss Galaxy Canada in 2011 and Mrs. Canada in 2017. Solange is more than these beauty titles. She’s the founder of elevate women and sits on the board of Unicef Canada. She started her own foundation called the Nayla Legacy. Last but not least, Jessica Harnois is the only female Québec sommelier renowned in the world. She worked for the best establishments in the world including Montreal, Chicago and Sydney. She was the only woman to manage over 750,000 wines in a typical male dominated industry. She became an author and created her own brand of wine and is the President of the Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers. When asked what Hustle & Heart meant to these two, beautiful, inspiring women, their responses were what every woman wanted to hear: the hustle never stops, but it’s worth it. For Maddy K , the hustle started way back when she was in university. “I was trying to hustle and try to manage school and work while being true to

who I am. I started my business in 2003, but the hustle has changed so much throughout the years and it’s evolved,” Maddy explains. “I don’t think the hustle ever stops but when I lose the connection between my heart and hustle, I realize that I may be reaching for things that are not true to who I am,” she describes. “I’ve always followed my heart, from being a student to an entrepreneur, to a small business owner, to being a wife and to being a mom. If my heart is happy than that’s success.” For Natasha Gargiulo, the hustle also never stops. It’s ongoing. She explains this while doing laundry over the phone, and joking that this is as real as it gets. “There are so many different chapters to everyone’s life. I’m at a stage where you hustle again,” Natasha explains. “Life changes whether you want it or not and adapting to new things means changing. You have to work hard in order to find your happiness and peace with whatever you do. The reason I keep going is because I absolutely love what I do and I don’t think I can envision myself stopping or quitting,” she says. Hustle & Heart has been going on for four years and this idea was created so that women could have an arena to get together and support each other. “We didn’t jump on the bandwagon of helping and empowering women,” Gargiulo explains. “We’re doing this because it’s in our hearts and we need to give back in a certain way. After every woman empowering event we’re tired, but receiving emails and messages of gratitude is the reason why we do it.” “It’s very fulfilling,” Maddy says. “We won’t work on anything if it’s not from the heart. It’s not a huge money-making opportunity, but we do it because we love Montreal and the women that are collaborating with each other.” If you want to be a part of the conversation and feel empowered by hustling women, grab your tickets for this upcoming event at the Rialto Theatre: http://theatrerialto.ca/en/e vent/hustle-heart-2019/ Follow Maddy K and Natasha Gargiulo on their journeys through Instagram for upcoming events and news on their hustling lives: @maddykatelier and @natasha_gargiulo Stay tuned for information on their upcoming event I AM on May 25th 2019. Day? Probably not, and even if you heard anything about our first prime min-

ister lately, it might not have been something good: just weeks before, his statue, erected in Place du Canada, had been defaced by vandals. Regardless of the motives for the action, which came in a context of historical revisionism, the attack on the statue is regrettable: the monument to Sir John A. is one of the finest works of public art in the city. However, the question goes beyond this act: the historical role of this most famous Father of Confederation has been put into question in light of the terrible damage inflicted by the policy of putting young aboriginals in residential schools, apparently

with the purpose of "civilizing them" and in the process, making them forget their culture and ancestry. Although MacDonald himself was not the proponent of this policy, it was under his tenure as Prime Minister that it was introduced. Last August, the City of Victoria, B.C., announced the removal of a MacDonald's statue from the front of city hall. In Montreal, Mayor Valerie Plante dismissed the suggestion to have the statue removed, but she announced last year and reiterated just a few days ago, her intention to work with the indigenous community to implement new policies of reconciliation. In particu-

Vandalism targeted the MacDonald statue

lar by forming an ad-hoc committee which should look for a new name for Amherst Street, a far more prominent historical irritant. This committee will be composed entirely by indigenous

people. Although the involvement of Jeffrey Amherst with a kind of biological warfare against the indigenous people was well known, it has been only now that his genocidal

role has been fully exposed and condemned. Historical records document that Amherst conspired with another officer –Colonel Henry Bouquet– to distribute blankets infected with smallpox among the indigenous tribes that were battling the British during the Pontiac's War (17631764).Actually, this type of warfare was not invented by Amherst, two centuries earlier it had been used by Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes in his war of conquest against the Aztecs in what is now Mexico. Cortes introduced an infected slave among the natives thus spreading the disease against which the Aztecs, and in general all aboriginals in the New World, had no defences. Millions of aboriginals died as a consequence of viruses introduced by the European colonizers, sometimes unwillingly, sometimes deliberately, as Cortes and then Amherst did. Alexis Diomedi in his work "The biological warfare in the conquest of the new world" wrote: "Five centuries ago the European invaders arrived in the New World.

Couillard's Liberal government; he has now moved to greener pastures This is disturbing because Minister Coiteux was a very enthusiastic supporter of a CDPQ initiative, the REM (Réseau express métropolitain). So much so that the opposition Parti Québécois joked about naming a REM station after him. In November, former Montreal mayor Denis Coderre was appointed to the board of Eurostar, a European company 30% owned by the CDPQ. nfinitheatre welcomes the return of one of its most popular productions with a nine-performance tour (in English and French) of the Greater Montreal area throughout February, before it embarks upon a tour of China and Japan in April. “Kafka’s Ape”, which is based on Franz Kafka’s 1917 short story “A Report for an Academy”, returns for this triumphant engagement with its original star Howard Rosenstein as “Mr. Redpeter”, a sharply-dressed half-man, half-ape, who delivers a keynote address – which is powered by a sense of bloodlust and consumed glasses of wine -- about

nies and the mercenary soldiers who are part of them.

Performances during the return engagement of “Kafka’s Ape” will take place at the following places and dates: Espace Knox in NDG (February 8-10), John Abbott College (February 12), Theatre Morin Heights (February 15 – 17), Maison de la culture Frontenac at 2550 Ontario Street (February 19 and 20, in French and free admission), and Maison de la culture du Plateau MontRoyal at 465 Mount Royal Avenue East (February 27, also in French and free admission). office, were they promoting the REM because they saw it as being in the public interest? The CDPQ is a crown corporation and the second largest pension fund in Canada with some $308 billion in assets under its management. So the Caisse has a lot of cash, giving it already tremendous clout. It is essentially the 800-pound gorilla in Quebec; Although a crown corporation, the Caisse is supposed to be politically independent from the Quebec government, simply seeking the highest return on investments. This makes the Caisse walk and talk like a private company with scant concern about public policy or who gets trampled underfoot. Some 30,000 passengers on the Deux Montagnes train line can attest to this. continued from Page 3

They carried with them what turned out to be their main allies in the conquest of the continent: smallpox, measles and influenza viruses. In an attempt to recompose the process of dissemination of such diseases, a systematic review of the biomedical and historical literature was performed, to investigate how the Spaniards first, and the British later, used mainly smallpox to undertake a biological warfare against the American Indians, which eventually meant the biggest population catastrophe that America has never suffered in all its history." Not surprisingly, with this background,Amherst will soon be gone from Montreal's street index. Instead, the downtown east-end street will carry an indigenous name. While demotion is the fate for Amherst, Sir John A.'s statue will likely stay.

Meanwhile, we wonder why Christian Dubé left his $1 million+ a year position with the CDPQ to run as a CAQ candidate last October. Now he is Chair of the Conseil du Trésor in François Legault's government. The Caisse has confided construction of the $6 billion+ REM to engineering giant SNC Lavalin. Times readers may recall this name from the Charbonneau Commission, allegations of bribes in Libya and Tunisia, bribes involving the MUHC hospital, and illegal political contributions. Some 20% of SNC Lavalin's shares are held by the Caisse. The real question is whether governments in Quebec need to be made politically independent from the Caisse...

The Mayor is right in this case, after all, MacDonald was not the direct proponent of the notorious residential schools (in fact this was an imperial policy: aboriginals in Australia were subjected to similar treatment). On the other hand, it is a well-known fact that notable historical figures have committed some disgraceful acts: despite speaking against slavery, Thomas Jefferson owned about 600 slaves (he released six), Churchill was instrumental in the creation of concentration camps in South Africa, and so on with many others now honoured with streets named after them. Montreal must emphasize reconciliation with the first nations and demote those who committed crimes against them, but each case must be carefully examined. After all, two wrongs don't make a right.

In August, Harout Chitilian, president of Montreal's Executive Council under Coderre, was appointed the CDPQ's director of corporate affairs and development. “My engagement with CDPQ Infra is a natural progression of my eight years of service to the community at the local government level,” said Chitilian. Chitilain's appointment came some eight months after losing the November 2017 municipal election while Coderre's appointment followed about 12 months after his election loss. Cote St. Luc Dramatic Society to present romcom “Almost, Maine”

Just in time for the Valentine’s Day period, the Cote St. Luc Dramatic Society (CSLDS) is presenting for their winter mainstage production something quite heartwarming during this quite cold time of the year. “Almost, Maine” by John Cariani is regarded as one of the most popular and widely produced plays over the past decade. This anthologytype humorous romance is actually a collection of 11 short plays that take

thing magical happens to these people of different ages and backgrounds with that common bond of love. It’s something that is perfectly heart warming, especially during these cold winter nights.” Tickets for “Almost, Maine” cost $25, $20 for students and seniors. They can be purchased at the Eleanor London Public Library on Cavendish Boulevard, the ACC on Parkhaven Avenue, online at www.csldramaticsociety.com, or at the door during the run of the show, just one hour prior to showtime.

place in 10-minute intervals in the mythical town of Almost, Maine during one chilly day in February at the same period of time (8:50 p.m., to be exact), in which its cast of 19 characters explore the common theme of love, whether it be first love, lost love, heartbreaking love or heartfelt love. The show, which was an Off-Broadway hit, will play for seven performances from February 20-24 at the Harold Greenspon Auditorium at Cote St. Luc City Hall, which is located on Cavendish Boulevard. “’Almost, Maine’ is just like the movie ‘Love, Actually’, but without the Christmas setting,” said CSLDS Artistic Director Anisa Cameron, who is also helming the production as its director. “It’s a

realistic look at love, but with a mystical, quirky undertone to it, because face it, real people can be quirky.” Cote St. Luc City Councilor Mitch Kujavsky, who is also one of the show’s producers, believes the appeal of “Almost, Maine” is how it attracts audiences of any age group, which is also reflected by the many age groups that are represented in the cast. “This play speaks to everyone, because every scene speaks to you in some way, shape or form, because all of us have dealt with the topic of love,” he said. And keeping with past CSLDS productions, Cote St. Luc Mayor Mitchell Brownstein will

have an onstage role with the cast. This time, he is one half of a long lost childhood sweetheart pair in one of the play’s most poignant vignettes. “It deals with first love and lost love, and focuses on two childhood sweethearts in which their relationship didn’t work out, because they married someone else,” he said. “There’s a great deal of reflection, because you ask yourself if the break up of this relationship was for the best? And what would it have been like if these two people actually got married to each other?” “This is a witty, fun play,” added Ms. Cameron. “Also, during the course of these 10minute intervals, some-

For a second year in a row, StLaurent High School welcomed young athletes to its gym. For the first time this year, the tournament was broadcast live on Sun Youth’s Facebook page so that no one would miss the action. Young players, aged between 16 and 21 years old, won the audience’s attention with their high game level. 5 of the top 25 Canadian High School Rankings, according to North Pole Hoops, participated in the tournament, including Canada Topflight Academy, Thornlea Secondary School, Vaughan Prep All Access, Halifax Prep and King’s Christian. NCAA university coaches were also present to evaluate and recruit young athletes. Several Sun Youth alumni played in the tournament including Champlain Cavaliers’ Obinna Uzoma Dike-Nwagbara and Bertrand Masabo and Champlain Lennoxville’s Lambert Kikundule. veryone loves to receive homemade goodies. Making a pesto or a jam is not as difficult as it may seem. But, how could jars of jam or pesto be considered a Valentine’s Day gift? It’s all about the label. If you’re not savvy with programs like Photoshop, there are many different websites that will allow you to create your own jar label.Your custom label could include the date, your sweetie’s name and the type of jam. Sweet labels are not limited to jarred goods. If

your Valentine is a beer or wine aficionado, you could have custom labels made for beer and wine bottles. Gift your love with more than one wine bottle made with your personalized label. You could drink one on Valentine’s Day this year and save the other for the following year. Mason jar gifts are all the rage right now and for Valentine’s Day, the trend is picking up even more steam. Pick up some jars and fill them up with candies and chocolates. Hershey’s kisses or pink and red M&Ms look exceptionally festive in jars. Red is the primary color of love. Mix chocolate and the color red and you have yourself a Valentine delight. Red velvet desserts are perfect for February 14th –and the best part is they are not

limited to cake alone. Cupcakes, brownies, cookies and even waffle versions of red velvet do exist. You can put all the dry ingredients into a jar and create a jar tag that has the recipe written on it. Your Valentine will bake away with a smile on their face especially when the aroma of baked goods fills the kitchen. If your lover isn’t a baker, you could put the baked red velvet cake or brownies inside the Mason jar and layer away. If you’ve baked a red velvet cake, make a cream cheese frosting to add in between the layers of cake. If you’ve baked red velvet brownies, you could make fudge for the layers.

Christmas, one Reddit user decided to take romance to the next level for his gift. He wrote 365 love notes for his girlfriend and put them in a jar. She was told that for the next year she had to take one note out and read it every day. Notes on yellow paper were about special moments they’ve shared over the course of their eight relationship. Green paper notes were love quotes and lyrics to romantic songs. Pink notes were reasons why he loves her. While Reddit user TheOnlyOne87 created this gift for Christmas it is

the perfect Valentine gift. Write down why you love your partner and reminisce about memories you’ve made. How else could you make the jar even more romantic? Handwrite your notes. There’s something about taking the time to handwrite your love notes that is touching and classically romantic. This Valentine’s Day, be romantic, creative and thoughtful. Anyone could buy a box of chocolates but nothing says thoughtful and loving like DIY gifts.

How did the chicken cross the 'breed' road? T he familiar joke, 'Why did the chicken cross the road?' and the answer 'To get to the other side' - first appeared in an 1847 edition of The Knickerbocker, a New York City monthly magazine. Since then, the joke has been altered in many creative ways, with many a creative answer - but about four years ago a study came out, which did

fact, today's chickens are at least 400% bigger than they were in the 1950's. By Bonnie Wurst The reason is not growth hormones, as mtltimes.ca many might presume, but not receive much laughter rather 'selective breeding'. and had many people According to a 2014 scratching their heads. study by University of AlThe question arose, berta (published in the 'How did the chicken Journal of Poultry Scigrow so big?' and the an- ence), in 1957 chickens swer was somewhat dis- weighed an average of 905 concerting to some. In 4,202 grams. The study

compared the growth of three different types of chickens to understand how the process of selective breeding worked. They found 'massive genetic differences as a result of selective breeding by raising chicken breeds from different eras under exact same conditions'. The study concluded that the chickens all who were of the same age and fed the same type and amount of food, showed a remarkable difference. The 2005 breed

had grown on average, over four times as heavy as the 1957 breed. According to 'Modern Farmer', a quarterly American magazine devoted to agriculture and food, it all started in 1948 when the US supermarket chain known as A&P (in conjunction with the USDA), held a contest they called the 'Chicken of Tomorrow - inviting poultry farmers from all over the nation to develop 'superior meat-type chickens'. The chickens with the most white meat, as well as bigger drumsticks, plumper thighs and that grew the fastest' - would be crowned the winners.

The crossbreed of the two winners, resulted in what is known as the 'Arbor Acres' breed, the 'grandparents' of most of the commercial chicken eaten worldwide today. To pluck at a few more feathers, consumption of chicken has grown exponentially over the years. We now eat more than three times as much since the '50s. To keep up and feed into the demand, chickens are bred more cost-efficiently by shortening the production cycle and cutting costs. According to data from the National Chicken Council in Washington, not only does it take less than half the feed to get

the same amount of meat, but it now takes less than half the time for a newlyhatched chicken to be ready for the market from 16 weeks in 1925 to less than 7 weeks since the 1990's. But there is a big price being paid. To do so, most commercial 'broiler chickens' are raised to reach their slaughter weight as fast as possible. They are confined to sheds, crowded wall to wall where they can barely move around and are overfed - to the point where they often collapse under their own weight. Add in the antibiotics used by most commercial farmers to enhance growth - and these creatures suffer greatly their whole life until they are tossed unceremoniously like feed bags towards their deaths. Animal advocates have been crying out about this for years and have helped to bring attention to this issue. It has resulted in greater public awareness and some improvements, but the practice continues with no real end in sight. What is has led to, is a growth in organic and free-range poultry farming, where even though the costs are significantly more to both producer and consumer, it is a more responsible and respectful development to the farming of living creatures. Were you aware of how selective breeding has genetically effected chickens? Do you or would you consider eating poultry from more 'responsible' or organic farms? Or are you a vegan and already abstain from consuming any animal products? Please leave your comments at the bottom of the article on our website. Four of the Three Musketeers: The Marx Brothers on Stage by Robert S. Bader

I

have been a fan of the Marx Brothers (in its threeand fourbrother incarnations) for over 40 years. I have seen all of their movies, watched countless reruns of Groucho’s TV game show “You Bet Your Life”, and on the book front, have read practically every

By Stuart Nulman mtltimes.ca

book written by them and about them, from such memoirs as Groucho and Me and Harpo Speaks!, to oral histories like The Marx Brothers Scrapbook, to collective biographies such as Groucho, Harpo, Chico and Sometimes, Zeppo. …At least that what I thought, until I got my hands on the latest addition to the Marx Brothers canon, Robert S. Bader’s Four of the Three Musketeers. Practically every book written about the brothers always had a chief focus on the 13 movies they did as a quartet and trio between 1929 and 1949, including such classics as “Animal Crackers”, “Duck Soup” and “A Night at the Opera”. A lesser portion of those books (starting with the first published collective biography by Kyle Crichton in 1950) mentioned the fact that the Marxes got their start in show business on the stage, first in vaudeville, then on Broadway (which was encouraged and engineered by their devoted, sassy mom Minnie Marx). With Four of the Three Musketeers (the title is taken from one of the songs that was performed in the Marxes’ third and final hit Broadway show “Animal Crackers” in 1928), Bader has given this well-known, but not widely written, aspect of the Marx Brothers story the biographical spotlight that is quite long overdue; and after reading this exhaustively researched and factually thorough ac-

count, it’s a book that no devoted Marx Brothers fan should be without. Bader, who edited an anthology of Groucho’s newspaper and magazine articles nearly 25 years ago called Groucho Marx and Other Short Stories and Tall Tales, has now earned the right to the pantheon of being an official Marx Brothers expert with this book. With plenty of meticulous research, he has chronicled the 40-year period between 1905 and 1945 when the Marx Brothers polished their comedy act and developed their respective, unique personas on the vaudeville and Broadway stages, and during the latter part of their careers, returned to the stage to preview select scenes from several of their later motion pictures, including “A Night at the Opera”, “A Day at the Races” and “Go West”. Being an avid Marx Brothers fan in particular – and a show business history buff in general – what I particularly enjoyed about the book is how Bader used his penchant for thorough research to re-examine the many stories of the brothers’ vaudeville and Broadway years that have attained legendary status amongst the multitude of their fans past and present. Utilizing many of the books that have been published since 1950, not to mention contemporary newspaper and magazine articles and trade paper reviews, Bader examines the many sides to these stories and tries to draw a conclusion of which story (and whose side of it) was the more legitimate one, whether it dealt with the defining moment in 1909 in Nacogdoches, Texas when the Marx Brothers transformed from a singing act

to a comedy act; how Harpo’s persona really went silent; the circumstances that lead to the brothers getting their famous stage names; and how Groucho went from wearing a false moustache to his famous greasepaint moustache in 1921. As well, the reader gets treated to some unknown stories about their years trodding the boards from one small town to another, such as how Groucho was the only brother who has show business aspirations, and the rest of his brothers joined him onstage rather reluctantly (and mainly to the prodding encouragement of their mother Minnie, especially with the case of younger brother Zeppo, in which Minnie got him to join the act in 1918 as a way of getting him away from the street gangs that

they were blacklisted several times from performing at some of the best theatres in the more prestigious Keith and Orpheum circuits. And Bader paints a portrait of the show business world – particularly the vaudeville world – that deftly sets the background of how the Marx Brothers developed their act on so many stages across North America, whether it be the widespread, yet abusive powers of the United Booking Office agency that determined which vaudeville acts performed in the best venues along the most prestigious circuits, the greed and tyranny of vaudeville theatre managers and owners, or the popularity of “tabloid”-type productions (which were basically two small scale shows that were combined as a double bill), which were the type of shows the Marx Brothers performed as they became the toast of vaudeville between 1910 and 1922. As an added bonus,

Bader includes a detailed, annotated chronology of every Marx Brother stage appearance between 1905 and 1945, whether it be as a group or as a solo act, the dates, cities and theatres, and any interesting – if necessary -- facts or details about a certain stop on a certain tour (on a local angle, the Marx Brothers performed in Montreal at the Princess Theatre in September of 1919 with their revue show “’N Everything”, and performed several times in Toronto between 1916 and 1922). Four of the Three Musketeers is a fascinating, indispensible book that details the evolution of one of the greatest comedy teams as they went through a long, bumpy trial by fire through the world of live stage shows, and through that trial by fire, struggling vaudevillians Julius, Adolph, Leonard and Herbert became legendary comedians Groucho, Harpo, Chico and Zeppo.
