However, these revelations didn't hurt his chances, on the contrary, they helped him. An interesting phenomenon to observe and compare with today's events, when we see Austria as well as other European nations, embracing political movements that resemble the nationalist and xenophobic discourse of those old tragic days. Canadian documentarists and especially the renowned National Film Board have a good reputation in this movie genre. Not surprisingly, "Ma guerre / My War" a film by Julien Fréchette doesn't disappoint, the subject is unusual: as we all know, the terrorist organization known as ISIS has been recruiting young westerners for some time now, a problem that has been extensively documented. However, little is known about volunteer fighters from the west –including Canada– who have joined the opposition to ISIS.Volunteers who have been fighting alongside the Kurdish and Iraqi forces against the jihadists. Free Report Reveals How to Avoid Getting Stuck Owning Two Homes

MONTREAL - West Island - Every month, thousands of homeowners are faced with the stressful dilemma of whether to buy first or sell first. You see, if you buy before selling, you could run the risk of owning two homes. Or, just as bad, if you sell first, you could end up homeless. It's what insiders in the industry call the Real Estate Catch 22, and it's an extremely anxious position to find yourself in. This financial and emotional tightrope is one you usually have to walk alone because most agents have no way of helping you with this predicament. But one local realtor is using a unique Guaranteed Sale Program which solves this dilemma. This program guarantees the sale of your present home before you take possession of your new one. If your home doesn't sell in 120 days, they will buy it from you themselves for the previously agreed price ensuring that you never get caught in the Real Estate • November 17, 2018

Word-of-mouth works particularly well for a company like ours. How will your business evolve over the next 5 years? For the time being, I am only based in Montreal. However, I would like to expand my services and implement them in other cities. My goal is to find the right partners in other major cities, in order to do even more for people. I have connections in other cities: Toronto, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, Dubai, and if you tell me “I’m going to Paris,” I’ll still find you what you need, but I never recommend a place that I haven’t visited myself. I need to have a feel of the place and vouch for it before sending my clients there. I cannot be everywhere so a team that I trust would be a nice next step for my business. Pet Squad roam the halls of MontréalTrudeau Airport

N

ew friends at YUL - Passengers at Montréal-Trudeau have been enjoying a new entertaining and soothing experience at the airport since the beginning of October. A squad composed of 30 dogs has been formed by Aéroports de Montréal (ADM) to roam around the terminal, offering moments of companionship to travellers who can admire the animals and speak with their handlers. Called YUL Pet Squad, this initiative is greatly appreciated by passengers who may be somewhat nervous or anxious in an airport environment. Initially implemented as a pilot project in collaboration with the Companion Animal Adoption Centres of Québec (caacQ), the squad is now an integral part of Mon-

tréal-Trudeau’s efforts to improve the passenger experience. • The YUL Pet Squad is currently present in the international and domestic zones of the airport terminal. • Volunteers let passengers approach the dog, but never go to them in case they have allergies or a phobia. • The squad’s name is a nod to the canine unit managed by the Airport Patrol, known as the Canine Squad. • The caacQ coordinates and selects the dog handlers, ensuring that they meet ADM’s security criteria. • Pet owners/guardians are performing this activity on a volunteer • Each volunteer has completed a two-hour training course and visited the site with their dog to assess its comfort level in an airport

“Aéroports de Montréal can be proud of its Pet Squad. This pilot project was very positive for everyone involved and the reactions from both passengers and employees showed just how much the presence of a dog can change things. We are very happy to be able to make this initiative a permanent one,” said Johanne Tassé, founder and general manager of the Companion Animal Adoption Centres of Québec. “We are very proud of this initiative, which has already proven to be effective at other airports around the world. Dogs are often seen as a human’s best friend and in an unfamiliar environment like ours their presence is truly comforting for passengers,” said Philippe Rainville, President and Chief Executive Officer of Aéroports de Montréal.

Stan Lee: Superheroes as ordinary people

a radioactive spider, he didn't use to fight crime – that only came when his beloved uncle Ben was killed by a criminal– but to make him some money. Spider-Man then was first a sort of accidental, even reluctant superhero, like many common guys who would not look for trouble. Eventually, that would change, and it probably was that unassuming superhero aura which saved the character, because his debut in 1962 had been in a comic book that was about to be cancelled after only 15 editions. Apparently, fans came to the rescue and Spider-Man was back by popular demand by 1963. The character then became the subject of a popular TV cartoon series in 1967. Those who watched that show must remember the contagious tune: "Spider-

man, Spiderman, / Does whatever a spider can / Spins a web, any size, / Catches thieves just like flies / Look Out! Here comes the Spiderman…" By 2002 the first SpiderMan blockbuster was made under the direction of Sam Raimi, written by David Koepp, and with Tobey Maguire in the leading role. Six more movies have been made since then. Stan Lee's approach to other superheroes such as The Incredible Hulk was very similar in that sense of "humanizing" the characters, which made them somehow more real as well. With Lee's death, one of the most influential names in the comic strip genre is gone. Paraphrasing the title of his main character, he was an amazing pop culture creator.

he executive committee member in charge of economic and commercial development and government relations, Robert Beaudry, announced two much anticipated programs that will bring a shift in the support offered by the city to its businesses that are affected by worksites. “Montréal is the very fist city in Canada to implement a financial support program for the owners of businesses affected by construction work. Our political party has been a long-standing militant for enhanced support to business owners during major infrastructure work. Now that we have a decision-making role, we are putting our words into action!" said Robert Beaudry. “The Artère en transformation program includes new elements that are more suited to meet the needs and challenges of business owners in order to mitigate the impacts of major worksites on their operations, as well as to accelerate the relaunching of commercial thoroughfares once work is completed," adds Robert Beaudry. The two programs, totaling $41 M, form a key combination to met business owners' actual needs. They were developed with the invaluable collaboration of the Comité commerce, lead by the Guy Cormier, the chief executive officer of Desjardins, as well as by the Associations des sociétés de développement commercial de Montréal. The Children deals with the human side to a cataclysmic disaster By Stuart Nulman mtltimes.ca

n the Centaur Theatre’s latest production, Lucy Kirkwood’s “The Children”, is basically a visit that is not your average social call in a post-Apocalyptic world that is filled with plenty of redemption and a toxic

dose of responsibility. It takes place in a seaside cottage somewhere in Britain that is inhabited by a married couple Robin and Hazel (Geordie Johnson and Laurie Paton) following a nuclear power plant disaster a la Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, which is called “The Wave”. The couple is paid an unexpected visit by Rose (veteran Canadian

actress Fiona Reid), who worked alongside Robin and Hazel as nuclear engineers at the plant before the accident. What begins as a rather friendly social call from out of nowhere ends up being a raw, emotional conversation of how the nuclear accident affected them physically and emotionally, especially the effects it had on their children.

At the offset, “The Children” almost resembles a BBC sitcom, filled with a great deal of sharp, witty dialogue. However, by the time the play ends, it reads more like “When the Bough Breaks”, Raymond Briggs’ satirical look at nuclear war on society. What one discovers is that there is a rather toxic connection between the trio that is more than just

the physical spectre of cancer that has affected them as a result of the radiation from the accident, but also the emotional baggage that hasn’t been redeemed when they were colleagues at the nuclear plant. The performances by the three leads are terrific, as they flawlessly shift those emotions from civility to humour to anger

when they try to deal with how this nuclear disaster has paid a heavy price on the three. It’s not an easy subject to deal with, but thanks to Reid, Johnson and Paton, “The Children” gives us a human side to “the morning after” of a cataclysmic event. “The Children” runs at the Centaur until November 25.

on December 2 with the screening of another French film, “Knife + Heart”, at the Concordia University Cinema at the Sir George Williams Campus. Starring Vanessa Paradis, the film deals with how a group of people concoct a number of pornographic scenarios involving a series of grisly deaths committed by a leather mask-wearing killer in Paris during the late 70s. Other films scheduled to be showcased at the festival include “The Happy Prince”, “The Miseducation of Cameron Post”, “Octavio is Dead”, and “Mapplethorpe”, a biopic about controversial photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Solar power vs oil - A slippery slope

Solar power and oil are at the forefront of this junction, with other sources of energy becoming either too costly, impractical or with serious environmental impact. Sources like Coal, used in the generation of electric power, is clearly limited and its days are counted - besides being one of the single-most harmful pollutants in our world. and consumption levels there is really just 118 years of coal electricity left at our disposal. And that can realistically become only 23 years with countries like China, India and the USA's economies growing at their present rate and global population expected to rise to 9 billion by 2050. Demand will simply exceed resources. Electricity from Wind Turbines, although a great advancement in renewable energy, require constant, expensive maintenance and are vulnerable to high winds and lightning. They also take up a lot of space - and generate a whole lot of noise. As far as electricity produced by Dams - they are extremely expensive

to build (in the billions of dollars) and could take decades to construct, but once in operation they are very efficient and produce electricity at a very low cost. But there only so many rivers we could dam without causing irreversible environmental damage from the flooding and the millions of people who are displaced because of them. So what's left? Solar power or oil? Oil reserves are shrinking at an alarming rate. According to Industry experts, conventional global oil reserves have just enough to last until sometime near the mid 2050's or sooner - but could be extended if we see an increase in alternate energy sources. Sun Youth Hornets go undefeated for Coach Earl the Knights scored first, making it the first time the Hornets were down all year.Although the Hornets gave up the lead for the first time that season, their defence had arguably its best game racking up 6 interceptions, one of them was returned for a touchdown (TD) by linebacker (LB) Mohamed Riane Chelghoufi. On the very next drive the Hornets scored on a 59 yard passing TD from quarterback (QB) Eloa Latendresse-Regimbald to wide-receiver (WR) Marc-Antoine Deslauriers, equalizing the game. After the first score the Hornets never took their foot off the gas pedal, they

scored 31 unanswered points and really didn’t give the Knights any room breath on defence. For the Hornets going undefeated the same year the season was dedicated to Sun Youth’s co-founder Earl De La Perralle meant everything. The future looks bright for many of the Hornets players as they sure to be high recruited by colleges and universities. Sun Youth has a long football tradition going back to the earliest days of the organization. Through the years, many former Hornets football and basketball players have made the jump to the college, university and even professional level.

t the start of the season, the Quebec Midget Football League (QMFL) had decided to dedicate the season to the late Earl De La Perralle who passed away on June 19th of this year. Earl co-founded Sun Youth as well as being a founding member of the QMFL. Throughout his life Earl was a pillar of the football community in Quebec. There were high expectations for the Hornets Midget team early on but nobody imagined that they would go undefeated, (13-0) and win both of their bowl games so handedly. This year’s team was clearly a cut above the competition, outscoring their opponents by a score of 36046, over the regular season. The first bowl game was the Doug Britton Bowl, a 24-0 shutout against the cross town rivals the North Shore Mustangs. The second was the BIG X Inter-Provincial Bowl, 31-7 tough game against the West-Ottawa Knights. Although the game against the Knights wasn’t very close, it didn't lack any excitement. They were clearly the best team the Hornets had played all season. A notable moment was when

The perfect itinerary in Providenciales The Turks and Caicos consist of 40 different islands and cays, only 8 of which are inhabited. From the main tourist center of Providenciales to the quiet and tranquil islands of North and Middle Caicos, each offers a different experience and a unique character but all offer year-round great climate, splendid beaches and fun underwater activities. Since the international airport is located in Providenciales, and so the "best beach in the world", why not stay on the "main island" and plan a day trip (or two) to check out the other islands while you are there... Most of the islands are only about 10 to 25 minutes away by air and can be reached by boat, too. West Jet & Air Canada offer weekly direct flights to/from Toronto and also flights from Montreal (with a connection in Toronto Pearson) to Providenciales. The flight from Toronto is less than 4 hours, therefore it is

www.mtltimes.ca

possible to visit the island only for a short trip. The very popular Club Med Turkoise, ideally located on Grace Bay Beach, just went through major renovations after Hurricane Irma hit the island in September 2017. After a complete makeover, the colourful adults-only all-inclusive resort reopened last Spring as a 4 Trident (4 stars) property. And it now looks better than ever. What changed at Club Med Turkoise? • The resort added a new room category with 92 new Deluxe rooms with balconies • The pool was redesigned – the infinity-edge pool now offers ocean views and guests no longer have to leave the comfort of their lounge chairs for a drink with the convenience of a new poolside service. • The food & beverage offer was upgraded – the resort’s main restaurant now features a new wraparound terrace with unobstructed sea views. A brand new wine cellar also offers premium selections of wine to enjoy on a private, open terrace. In addition, a brand new

smoothie and coffee bar opened in the "beach bar grill" that also serves an all-day menu.

The must-do's while on Providenciales: • Take a scenic stroll on the powdery white sands of Grace Bay beach, voted #1 in the world • Explore the ocean depths and gorgeous coral reefs in this snorkeler's/divers’ paradise - one of the top walldiving destinations in the world • Visit at least one of the other islands (by boat or by plane) and remember that 8 of them are inhabited • Go see the iguanas on "Iguana Island", home to the islands' remaining endangered population of rock iguanas. The Turks and Caicos National Trust leads efforts to protect the habitat, and it is just a short trip by boat from Providenciales. In case you were still wondering, it is true what they say about Turks & Caicos : the water is really turquoise and the whitesand beaches are unbelievably beautiful. But don't take my word for it. Go see it to believe it. And thank me later!

n g e l b e r t Humperdinck never wanted to be a singer. A career in music, yes, but he was extraordinarily shy. The youngest boy of a family of ten children originally from Leicester, England, he grew up in Madras, India, where his father was stationed during World War II. Engelbert’s childhood was dominated by the love of his parents and his brothers and sisters. He knew he could sing harmonies, but the power of his own voice came as a surprise to him and other people. “It’s just so loud, but I discovered I can be tender with it at the same time.” Like all great icons, he is a man of great depth – masculine and loving, shy inside and uninhibited onstage, prepared to play the sex god to the hilt and still, at this stage of his career, managing to get away with it. “My mother’s side of the family had the signing voice so I must have inherited that from her. My father was a man’s man – strong, athletic, charismatic. And I like to do all kind of men things. I love sports, golf, tennis martial arts, soccer, skiing, but at the same time, yes

www.mtltimes.ca

I do appreciate women.” In a career spanning almost 50 years, Engelbert has generated sales in excess of 140 million records, including 64 gold albums and 35 platinum, four Grammy nominations, a Golden Globe, and stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Las Vegas Walk of Fame, and Leicester Walk of Fame. He has performed for the Queen four times, several presidents and many heads of state. He has recorded everything from the most romantic ballads to movie theme songs, disco, rock, and even gospel. His unique voice has charmed millions of fans around

the globe. However, it’s not just the voice, but the man himself, with his endearing sense of humor and self-deprecating jokes. Engelbert has managed to strike a new chord with a younger generation after appearing on MTV several times. Zero Waste Shampoo

A

By Tara Palov Montreal Times

s we all try and do our part in reducing waste, we simultaneously begin to look at how consumption is affecting our health. We become aware of what we eat, use and eliminate down the drain and into our garbage and recycle bins. Our skin improves with the decrease in chemicals and our environment throws their branches up in a cheer for a cleaner world. Since we started making shampoo bars, (basic, esp, regular) many years ago, you have given us wonderful feedback on how they lather, how they make our hair clean and fresh and how your scalp is happier and healthier. The pesky eczema on your foot has miraculously vanished. No coincidence that toxic suds are replaced with nutrition to tickle your skin as you rinse.

Charcoal Clay Soap and Irish Stout Oatmeal Soap have become popular among shampoo bar lovers. And more recently, we have been hearing your excitement about how little waste they produce! Not to mention the fact that our shampoo bars contain no harmful chemicals that end up polluting our waters and environment. A tiny piece of paper and a sticker are left. We round that off to "zero" in the large scheme of things. No plastic bottles. No liquid chemicals. Beautiful lather. Clean and happy hair and scalp. What's not to love? Our Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse is the shampoo bar's sister product. She naturally rinses the residue buildup, leaving your scalp hydrated and your hair soft. We recommend using her no more than once a week. Feel free to create your own with 1/2 water, 1/4 ACV and your

favourite essential oil. See Essential Oils. Our secret to a long lasting shampoo bar is to cut it in half. Rub the bar on your wet head and lather/rinse as usual. It takes time to get used to any change, but once it becomes routine, your hair, scalp, skin, drainage and recycle bin will shine with pleasure in response to your mini revolution. We stand behind our products. We give great customer service. Visit our online store: natural.ca. Subscribe to our newsletter. Check out our BIOS. Meet us in person at the shop. any of us have been busy running around, travelling and sharing time with family and friends. Sounds like fun but it can also be very stressful. Just being out of our normal routine, not sleeping in our own bed and being around excited and often tired children can add to tension felt at this time of year. Happy New Year! Now is the time for all of those resolutions. I hope you add relaxation and taking care of yourself to the list. With more people doing our micronutrient blood test and more people using the Magnesphere Therapy I am enjoying watching the effects of relaxation and nutrient replenishment when we know what we need. Getting to know what we need is crucial. Often we just feel down, tired and restless but don’t really understand why. I am hearing and learning more about Mindfulness. Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention on the present. When you're mindful, you observe your thoughts and feelings from a distance, without judging them good or bad. Instead of letting your life pass you by, mindfulness means living in the moment and awakening to experience. Most of us are probably not very good at this but I think it is worth looking at. Being aware of the present should help us recognize and deal with some of the stress and tension that so affects our lives. In Psychology Today I found this article “The Art of Now: Six Steps to Living in the Moment” We live in the age of distraction. Yet one of life's sharpest paradoxes is that your brightest future hinges on your ability to pay attention to the present. By Jay Dixit, published on November 01, 2008 last reviewed on September 20, 2013 A friend was walking in the desert when he found the telephone to God. The setting was Burning Man, an electronic arts and music festival for which 50,000 people descend on Black Rock City, Nevada, for eight days of "radical self-expres-

The idea was that you picked up the phone, and God— or someone claiming to be God—would be at the other end to ease your pain. When God came on the line asking how he could help, my friend was ready. "How can I live more in the moment?" he asked. Too often, he felt, the beautiful moments of his life were drowned out by a cacophony of selfconsciousness and anxiety. What could he do to hush the buzzing of his mind? "Breathe," replied a soothing male voice. My

time to practice stillness and calm. When we're at work, we fantasize about being on vacation; on vacation, we worry about the work piling up on our desks. We dwell on intrusive memories of the past or fret about what may or may not happen in the future. We don't appreciate the living present because our "monkey minds," as Buddhists call them, vault from thought to thought like monkeys swinging from tree to tree. How often does this happen to you? The same thoughts going on and on, over and over during the night like a broken record we can’t turn off. We can learn how to turn that record off. We need to live more in the moment. Living in the moment—also called mindfulness—is a state of active, open, intentional attention on the present. Mindful people are happier, more exuberant, more empathetic, and more secure. They have higher self-esteem and are more accepting of their own weaknesses. brace the torso in the performance of full body movement. This effect is most obvious when training loads are relatively high. The breath should be exhaled through the mouth at the point of greatest effort during the lift, to allow for a partial equalization of internal (torso) pressure. The Load should be returned to the starting position as a subsequent breath is initiated. Training Tempo: The tempo of training can vary with the desired training result in mind. Maintaining control of the load while executing the exercise with the best possible form is one factor in determining the high end (faster) of the lifting tempo. A slower tempo may not stimulate as many explosive (Fast twitch) muscle fibres’, but does result in greater muscle “cross bridge” activation (more muscle fibre are called upon to perform the movement). Cool-Down period: After the high intensity phase of your workout is finished, a cooldown activity (moderate-slow full body movement) should be performed to allow for the gradual decrease in heart rate and body temperature. This is the appropriate time to include stretching exercise with the objective of increasing flexibility as well as allowing the gradual reduction in rates of perspiration, breathing and pulse rate. Stretches at this phase of the workout should be held for a longer period than during the warm-up (15 – 30 seconds each or even longer if you have time). Caution: Read all instructions on equipment operation and understand the proper form of each exercise prior to performing it. Consult your trainer if you have any questions about the performance of an exercise. There is an assumption of risk of injury when being involved in all types of physical activity. Don’t begin an exercise program, if you have an illness or are not cleared by your health practitioner to be physically active. Peter Churchill C.S.C.S. arm-up: Begin each exercise session by starting with a low intensity level of general activity. Moving joints through all of the planes and ranges of motion will prepare the joints for the following workload and gradually stimulate blood flow to the working muscles and elevate the heart rate. An effective general warm-up will actually increase body temperature and may be the stimulant for sweating. Full body Cardio (Aerobic - Metabolic) activities are effective method ways to increase exercise heart rate and body temperature. Pre training stretching can be done prior to the strength phase (gentle range of motion) and is more effective when tissues are more elastic after the warm-up activity has been done. Load: To determine the Load or weight with which you should perform strength exercises, it is necessary to determine approximate maximum strength levels for each exercise (muscle group). One relatively safe (have a spotter present*) method of determining your maximum strength level is to perform an exercise using a weight that you estimate that you will be able to lift for at lease five repetitions (5RM). A 1RM (one time lift capacity) is an effective method, but often is the cause or can contribute to the greater likelihood of injury occurring during testing. A very conservative method of finding your Max, is using a very low Load for any given exercise and slowly building up the weight used each workout session. Increases for the 5RM will result if a gradual and progressive approach to increasing the training Load, is followed. Intensity: All exercises should be performed with full control. The speed of contraction (super slow – explosive) varies with the desired training focus and objective. The concentric phase (muscle shortening or positive movement) should be performed slightly faster that the eccentric phase (muscle lengthening or negative movement). A 2:4 count is a good rule of thumb benchmark from where to start. Breathing: A complete breath should be drawn in, in preparation for the positive phase of a lift. The breath should be held only long enough to assist the core stabilizing muscles to

Fear: Trump in the Are you frustrated with your White House by social media marketing? Bob Woodward R Book review

S

ince the beginning of this year, which marked the first anniversary of Donald Trump being sworn in as the 45th President of the United States, there has been a whole tidal wave of books that has examined practically every aspect of his controversial presidency.Whether they were written by insiders, outsiders, experts, journalists or pundits, or looked at Trump the president, what goes on inside his White House, or his alleged Russian connection, you can fill an entire case of bookstore shelves with books about President Trump, favourable and unfavourable. Consider this. Michael Wolff’s runaway bestseller Fire and Fury was the spark that lit the fuse; Bob Woodward’s latest inside presidential tome Fear is the explosion. While Wolff’s book was more like a “fly-on-thewall” approach to what is going on behind the walls of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue during the first year of the Trump administration,Woodward, using his Pulitzer Prize-winning skills as an investigative reporter and best selling author (by conducting hundreds of hours of interviews and doing diligent research through plenty of official and secret documentation), gives a chilling, frustrating portrait of how this apathetic train wreck is running things from his perch of the Resolute desk in the Oval Office. When he was a presidential candidate, Trump admitted that fear was real power. But when you read Woodward’s book, the real fear that arises is how in less than two years in office, he has ran the presidency with a complete disregard for the office, and a complete disrespect for the traditions and procedures that have been developed for over 200 years in order to realize the chief executive’s legislative agenda. “All presidencies are audience driven, but Trump’s central audience was often himself. He kept giving himself reviews. Most were passionately positive. Much of his brain was in the press box,” writes Woodward. “The operations of the Oval Office and White House were less the Art of the Deal and more often the Unraveling of the Deal. The unraveling was often 18

There is no way for the ous loop. There was no reader to even suggest way not to look.” And there are so many that Fear is attached with glaring examples of the a personal agenda for above passage in the Bob Woodward.
