o r l d Alzheimer's Month, culminating in World Alzheimer's Day on September 21st, is to raise awareness of the global impact of dementia. I know I have written about Alzheimer’s in the past but feel the need to continue to talk about it so we do not forget those dealing with friends or family members affected by it. The number of Canadians with dementia is rising sharply. As of today, there are over half a million Canadians living with dementia - plus about 25,000 new cases diagnosed every year. By 2031, that number is expected to rise to 937,000, an increase of 66 per cent. Worldwide every three seconds someone develops dementia. Recognizing some of the warning signs might help families start to deal with changes early in the process. One of the most common signs of Alzheimer’s disease, especially in the early stage, is forgetting recently learned information. Others include forgetting important dates or events, asking for the same information over and over, and increasingly needing to rely on memory aids such as post-its everywhere or family members for things they used to handle on their own. Some people may experience changes in their ability to develop and fol-

may have trouble following or joining a conversation. They may stop in the middle of a conversation and have no idea how to continue or they may repeat themselves. They may struggle with vocabulary, have problems finding the right word or call things by the wrong name such as calling a watch a hand clock. A person with Alzheimer's disease may put things in unusual places such as vegetables and milk in the pantry. They may lose things and be unable to go back over their steps to find them again. t was a full house at the Imperial Theatre last Wednesday night (September 26), as award-winning film director Spike Lee made his third appearance at the Montreal International Black Film Festival in a special live question and answer session. Lee, along with festival founder and director Fabienne Colas, engaged the audience with a discussion about his more than 30 years as a film director, writer, producer and actor, from “She’s Gotta Have It” to “BlackkKlansman”, which recently won the Grand Prix at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. He related how he got interested in movies (his

make movies (back in the summer of 1977 while he was in college and had no job that summer; he found a box containing a super 8 movie camera and film at a friend’s house and

started shooting raw footage of New York City during that hot, explosive summer), and some behind-the-scenes stories of some of his films (including how he accepted to direct “BlackkKlansman”, which was based on a sixword pitch given to him by Jordan Peele, who wrote the screenplay). Lee also gave some concrete advice on what it takes to succeed in the entertainment industry: “You can’t let people determine what you want to do,” he said. “It’s hard to make a horrible film, let alone a good film. There is no such thing as an overnight success; you have to put the work in.”

The new space, transformed and furnished with the latest in projection equipment, will enrich downtown Montreal’s cinematographic offering, providing a rich programme of Quebec, Canadian and international fiction films and documentaries. The first gala première evening of the Cinéma du Musée took place with the preview screening of the film Une colonie directed by Geneviève Dulude-De Celles – opening in February 2019 – which was recently awarded the Grand Prize in the Festival de cinéma de la ville de Québec competition (FCVQ). This ninth auditorium of the Beaubien and Du Parc network is a new NPO co-managed by the MMFA. The Museum uses the auditorium on Mondays in the daytime and on Wednesdays for its own programme of training activities, lectures, colloquia and documentaries. the UN's commemorative day. According to the UN, the accomplishments of older people are “often overlooked and under-appreciated”. It should be obvious that it is vitally important for society to mine the repository of knowledge, memory, and experience of previous generations. However, many times the young lose sight of the fact that their elders often possess the wisdom that is acquired only by a long life well-lived. We can't really move forward on our own life journeys without acknowledging the important roles that seniors play within our families and communities. The annual celebration of retirees, senior workers, volunteers, grandparents, and grand oldsters aims to get people thinking about how to tap into the talents of goldenagers. It poses the question, "This October 1st, why don’t you celebrate

an important senior in your life?" Thinking in collective terms the question might be reframed as, "Who are the great older people in our neighborhoods and cities that we can learn from and what life-lessons do they have to teach us?" Irene Steiner is an energetic 88-year-old and the oldest university graduate in Montreal. A retired teacher and avowed learner, she writes under the name Irene Even. Her recent memoir A Life of the Twentieth Century is just that: the gripping true story of her own life as an orphan living under Nazi occupation, surviving the war, then later the Russian occupation. It tells the story of how against all odds she made her way to Palestine (now Israel) in 1946 with other migrant children before immigrating to Canada in 1952. "We walked through the Alps," she says, matter-of-fact, describing her daring escape, a familiar image to anyone who has ever seen the hit musical The Sound of Music. (The heartwarming movie portrays the von Trapp family singers crossing over the Alps from Austria to escape the Nazi regime, which some commentators have described as pure fiction.) Steiner was a student living in Budapest when the Nazis came and closed the school putting the children out on the street. "We were a group of young kids. I was one of the children who was left behind," she says, recalling how others went back to their families. Her grandparents were the only family she had ever known before leaving her "little village" in the Carpathian mountains to go to school in

gave it meaning." Perhaps not surprisingly, Steiner's son is a professor at UQAM. One day some of his colleagues were asking questions about her life but she couldn't answer them. Instead, she said, "My whole life is complicated. I wouldn't know where to start. It's full of historical events." So, one of them said, "Why don't you write a book?" he National Film Board of Canada will be hosting an Open House between 10 am and 3 pm on Sunday, Sept. 30th as part of the line-up for Journées de la culture. The purpose of the occasion is to give the public the opportunity to peer inside the fascinating world of film-making at its legendary headquarters at 3155 Côte-de-Liesse Road in Ville Saint-Laurent before the NFB packs up and moves next spring to Îlot Balmoral, its new flagship building in the heart of the Quartier des spectacles downtown. It's the "last chance" to see and explore the inner workings of film-making at the historic location that Canada's public filmmaker has called home since 1956, says Claude Joli-Coeur, Government Film Commissioner of the NFB. "I'm bringing my

mother in a wheelchair," he says, noting that the facilities are "totally accessible" and activities are "family-friendly." Partici-

pants will be able to choose between an indoor tour by NFB guides and an outdoor tour of the heritage building and its surroundings by Heritage Montreal. Both events are free of charge

and free parking is also available. There are two components to the Open House: a guided tour that's approximately an hour-and-a-half long, and special activities that you can sign up for individually when you arrive. The indoor circuit includes a tour of the sound studio to learn about sound mixing, as well as a visit to the screening room where trailers and excerpts of films will be shown. There will be an exhibit on animation, and workshops for those who want to try their hands at a few things. Visitors are welcome to stay at the NFB for the entire day. The NFB is planning to open its doors to as many visitors as possible, JoliCoeur says. "Just tell people to come in and we'll take care of them." .

ore shoulder, aching arms, legs or feet, back pain. These aches and pains aren't just the result of getting older or being out of shape. They are often related to our work, especially for women. In 2007, "strains and sprains" accounted for 50 percent of all injuries reported to Canadian workers' compensation boards. More women than men report these soft tissue injuries as a result of their work. For example: • Health care workers get bad backs. • Sewing machine operators have shoulder and neck problems. • Bank tellers and cashiers standing on the job get leg or foot injuries. • Computer users get hand, wrist, neck and shoulder problems. These injuries usually sneak up on us. Women often get on with their jobs, trying to "work through" the pain or ignore night time tingling in their hands. But the injuries can become very painful and, sometimes permanent, disabilities. Depending on what is injured, other tissues can be affected. Work and other activities may be difficult: women may not be able to brush their teeth, hold their children, open doors, prepare food or carry groceries. What are these injuries

called? • carpal tunnel syndrome (nerves going through wrist); • degenerative disk disease (backbone); • epicondylitis (tennis or golfer's elbow); • myofascial pain/myalgia (tissue covering muscles); • rotator cuff syndrome (shoulder tendons); • sciatica (nerve to leg from discs); • tendonitis (tendons); and • tenosynovitis/de Quervain's (tendon sheath/covering). How can I deal with a work-related soft tissue injury? • See your doctor about getting time off, "light duty". • Go to a specialist (osteopathic doctor, naturopathic doctor, massage therapist). • Take your breaks, walk at lunch and/or do exercises on the job (eg. shoulder rolls, stretching).

Osteopathic Treatment is the best solution for to decrease your discomfort and pain. Dr. Kruglov is using advance manual techniques, therapeutic laser, naturopathic formulas to increase vital force in order to help the body heal itself faster. Osteopathy is a way of detecting and treating injury to the body in it's various forms, whether it be through physical trauma (i.e. whiplash, traumatic birth for mother and baby), repetitive strain, 'overuse' i.e. sports injury) or just the knocks and bumps that we collect through life. When the bones, joints and soft tissues of the body are fully mobile, balanced and efficient, like a well tuned complex machine, it will function optimally and with the minimum of energy, effort, wear and tear. Head Wounds Book review

by Dennis Palumbo

D

r. Daniel Rinaldi is a psychologist who also serves as a consultant with the police department of his native Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in which he specifically deals with the victims of violent crimes and the trauma they go through as a result. After a typical long day of dealing and working with such sensitive cases, Rinaldi likes to unwind by listening to jazz CDs – especially by Miles Davis -- on his home stereo system. However, it was one night as Rinaldi was listening to a Miles Davis CD that a bullet was fired right through his front window and embedded itself into a wall inside his home, thereby shattering the tranquility of that evening down time he hoped to enjoy. Somehow, he unwillingly ends up in the middle of a domestic dispute that he never wanted to get mixed up with, which involved his neighbour Joy Steadman and her boyfriend, in which she told her jilted lover that she was currently dating Dr. Rinaldi (which was, of course, false). And this rather nearfatal misunderstanding evolved into one of Dr. Rinaldi’s most bizarre, disturbing and violent cases of his career, which is told in breathless detail in Dennis Palumbo’s latest potboiler Head Wounds. Palumbo, himself a licensed psycho-therapist, is also an award-winning Hollywood screenwriter and best-selling mystery novelist. Head Wounds is the fifth novel featuring Dr. Daniel Rinaldi; and even if you haven’t read the previous four Rinaldi mysteries, Head Wounds will automatically draw you into the story from the beginning, and relentlessly won’t let you go until its bizarre, fiery con-

clusion. And from that single gunshot in the night time, Rinaldi is thrust into a deadly cat-and-mouse game with Sebastian Maddox, a highly psychotic computer geek and murderer (who is a cross between Hannibal Lechter and “Scorpio”, the muchdetested sniper killer from the first Dirty Harry

ple who are close to Rinaldi, and end their lives in a rather savage manner. This book is cleverly crafted and certainly delivers when it comes to edge-of-your-seat suspense. Just as you breathlessly follow Rinaldi in his pursuit to prevent another victim at the hands of Sebastian Maddox, Palumbo brings about another twist that is just as terrifying and just as chilling. As well, Palumbo allows for his protagonist to have a little soft, sensitive spot to him, which comes in the form of his late wife Barbara, who was brutally murdered, and how she somewhat inadvertently becomes involved in Maddox’s macabre plot to get even By Stuart Nulman with Rinaldi. Stretch for improved fitness and alleviation of some causes of pain and discomfort. As with all forms of exercise, some exercises may be appropriate for some people and not others. Stretching must be progressive in nature and also requires patience and consistency in order to realize positive results. While it’s true that some people seem to have an easier time developing flexibility, everyone can improve. People use stretching exercises to improve their ability in sports (obvious with events such as Artistic Gymnastics), and stretching is equally important in nearly every type of sport. Stretching develops better joint range of motion and mobility, as well as facilitating recovery. Although stretching itself is not a great warm-up method, better flexibility is one way to reduce the likelihood of (some types) injury during physical activity. Recreational “athletes” as well as people pursuing a fitness program can benefit from improved flexibility as much as competitive athletes. Although everyone has essentially the same skeleton and muscle groups, stretching exercise must match, needs and ability. Choosing the best exercises for “you” is a

very individual process and having professional guidance from a Certified Professional Fitness Coach (keep in mind that not all qualifications as equivalent) is a great starting point. Guesswork when it comes to exercise is not often a great path to follow. In general if you select a few exercises to follow and perform the exercises below a pain threshold, sustaining the “stretch” for anywhere between 10 & 60 seconds, repeating the exercise as necessary to the point where you feel a sense of release and relaxation, you’re on the right path. Breathing sequence is a very important point to be aware of during stretching. Holding your breath as you attempt to stretch is counter productive, whereas exhaling as you allow your body to release during a stretch, enhance your state of relaxation. Movements should “flow” and avoid bouncing as you stretch as this can cause unnecessary micro tearing of connective tissues. Consider joining a stretching class and make stretching a part of your everyday routine. (Call Peter for a chart to be e-mailed) Peter Churchill C.S.C.S.
