t is estimated that one in three Canadians will have a mental health problem at some point in their life. Many Canadians do not realize the impact that poor mental health has on families, communities, health systems and the economy. Mental health is as important as physical health to a person’s well-being, but understanding and awareness of mental illness is lagging far behind other health conditions

such as cancer, diabetes or heart disease. In part, this is because the information available about mental health is fragmented but mostly it is because people do not want to talk about mental illness. Mental Health Finance According to survey data in 2010, close to one in five people have diagnosed mental disorders, both in Québec and in Canada. Anxiety disorders, (10%) depression (5%) and schizophrenia

(1%) (ISQ, 2010). An analysis of a 2002 population survey demonstrated that in Québec, as elsewhere in Canada, most people who have mental disorders do

not consult health professionals. Given the lack of good information about mental illness and the unwillingness to talk about it, how can we begin to deal with this disease? How can we even begin to know the scope of the disease if so many do not seek help? Those who do get diagnosed with mental illness often do not follow the medical plan. They don’t believe it, they are angry about it and they

resist any help or interference with their lives. What we are hearing in the news these days is shocking and very scary. We deal with some families in our home care business that are struggling to cope with family members who have a mental illness. There is not much help out there and people are grasping trying to do what they can without the expertise to do so. Mental illness falls be-

tween the cracks when it comes to treating and paying for help. We have to do something about this! Mental illness afflicts about 20% of Canadians, gets 7% of health funding By The Canadian Press Thu. Oct. 27, 2016 Mental illness afflicts some 6.7 million Canadians — roughly 20 per cent of the population — and costs the economy an

estimated $51 billion each year. If our government does not see the need for a commitment to improving the care for those with mental illness because of the human catastrophes maybe they should be motivated by the economic impacts. I cringe to even write this. Where are our Canadian values? Comments, Suggestions welcome. donna@ashcanada.com

Some other cities, such as Paris,

EABs are legal on bike paths and most streets; adults require no special driving license, but the operator must be wearing a helmet.Youths aged 14-17 do need a 6D scooter license, while youths under age 14 are not allowed at all to drive an EAB. 11 Critical home inspection traps to be aware of weeks before listing your home for sale

MONTREAL - According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That's why it's critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the building inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn

prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases, you can make a reasonable pre- inspection yourself if you know what you're looking for, and knowing what you're looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help home sellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled "11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection" has been compiled which explains the issues involved. To order a FREE Special Report, visit: www.montrealinspectionpitfalls.com Get your free special report NOW to learn how to ensure a home inspection doesn't cost you the sale of your home.

And on that same night, Scott/Buddy will make an appearance as part of the line-up for “The Stand Up Show with Katherine Ryan”, which is being taped for future broadcast on the Comedy Network. During a recent phone interview, Thompson admitted that bringing back Buddy to Just For Laughs – 25 years since his festival debut – was not seen as a resurrection of the character, but because the time was right to do so. “I felt it was the right time for him, because now history is repeating itself. The world is now very polarizing and politically correct,” he said. “Every-

Just For Laughs - Talking comedy with Todd Glass

By Stuart Nulman mtltimes.ca

odd Glass made his Just For Laughs debut in 1992, during the festival’s 10th anniversary edition, as a “mobile comedian”. Glass had a makeshift comedy club that he operated out of the back of a Jeep pickup truck, complete with a fold out comedy club brick wall backdrop. During his stint in Montreal that year, Glass would take his mobile comedy club around the city (I had the chance to see him perform outside the Rialto Theatre with his mobile comedy get up) and would do his comedy act to whoever gathered around his truck/club. “I started doing the mobile comedian bit half as a joke. My truck had a folddown brick wall, a stage, speakers, a spotlight and a generator mounted on the front of the truck to power up the P.A. system. As well, I had a cordless microphone so I could work around the audience,” said Glass during an interview with him in the quiet, deserted lobby of the Hyatt Hotel.“Bruce Hills saw me do the act in Irvine, California and wanted me to bring it to Montreal, and made it very easy for me to bring the act to Just For Laughs. I just set myself up all over the city and I was having a great time. Fortunately, these days I am no longer performing from the back of a Jeep pick-up truck.” The Philadelphia native, who launched his career as a comedian 36 years ago when he was only 18, has toured with the likes of Sarah Silverman, Jim Gaffigan and David Cross and has done several stand-up specials on cable (including his most recent special “Act Happy”, which aired on Netflix). This time, the back of a pick-up truck is not his stage, but instead it’s the

MainLine Theatre on St. Laurent Boulevard, where he is performing his solo stand-up show throughout this week. Glass is a very serious student of comedy and what makes people laugh, and is quite passionate when he talks about his craft (which was quite evident during our conversation). “When I say what’s on my mind, people think it has to be deep, and it can be. But what’s great about comedy is that you hear people talking about their depression, alcoholism or just about everything,” he said.“However, some people are just sillier when they are onstage. I like to learn by watching other comedians like Rory Scovell as he gets his silly juices going. What makes you laugh, what makes you giggle and bringing that onto the stage is what stand-up comedy is all about.” “And loving stand-up certainly helps. I genuinely love it now as much as I did when I started in the business 36 years ago,” he added. Glass is a firm believer that anyone who asserts that comedy these days is not what it used to be 20 or 30 years ago is quite wrong. “If you think comedy is not what it’s used to be, then I think you are through being as great as you can possibly be as a comedian because you’re wrong. Here’s a fact: comedy is getting better and better,” he said. “It’s like a litmus test on absurdity.” “When I was 17, I got tired of hearing guys like (veteran comedian and TV host) Steve Allen talk about nothing but how comedy was over, and it really bothered me. I felt like telling him to just shut up. On the other hand, I heard legendary comedians like Alan King and Don Rickles say in interviews that there has always been good and bad comedy, and it will be that way until time dies. And I always wanted to thank

them for saying that,” he added. A major attribute to Glass’ longevity in the comedy world is his open mindedness to subsequent generations of younger comics, and how he can be a role model to them, and in turn be inspired by them. “My genuine belief that comedy is still great helps me to at least stay on my game and admire new generations of comedians. It’s comedians like Chelsea Peretti and Rory Scovell who really moti-

vate me to tap into a sillier part of me. There are times when I am in a room and when I see a comedian I like, I will turn to my friend who is with me at the time and tell them ‘Watch this guy! Watch this girl! They’re really funny. Watch them!’,” he said. “You really have to be immersed and be out there checking out what’s going on in the comedy world. When I get into a town the night before a gig, I find out if there is an open mic night around

taking place. I want to hang out and talk with other comedians because where else am I going to have a better time than in a comedy club?” As well as his week-long solo gig at the MainLine, Glass will also do a live taping of his podcast “The Todd Glass Show” on July 27 at the Hyatt Hotel. Rated as the #1 podcast by the Podcasters Association of America since it went on the air in 2011, he asserts that a lot of what goes on during his podcast filters into his stand-up act. “I am going to have Gary Gulman as my guest, as well as a live band that will play some slinky music as the people are walking in,” he said. “We will take the room that we will be doing the podcast in and darken it up, and get it as funky and cozy as we can. We’re going to have a good time with all the bells and whistles involved. It will basically give me the chance for some good talking and spend an hour being silly with another comedian.” For more information – or to purchase tickets – to the Todd Glass show or any other Just For Laughs show, go to: www.hahaha.com

Just For Laughs: Talking stand-up with Katherine Ryan

F

or comedian Katherine Ryan, comedy was always something that she really valued throughout her life. “My dad came from an Irish background, and he always enjoyed telling humorous stories with the rest of the family. We also enjoyed telling funny stories to each other at the dinner table, which was quite engaging. I even liked watching ‘The Golden Girls’ with my grandmother,” she said during a recent phone interview. Ryan, a native of Sarnia, Ontario, always had that need to have a laugh and make people laugh; however, when she was in school, having a sense of

By Stuart Nulman mtltimes.ca

humour was not the way to make new friends. “My schoolmates always regarded me as being rather strange. They thought comedy was sort of a detriment towards having a social life.” When she moved to Toronto, where she studied city planning at Ryerson University, Katherine found out that there was much easier access to the comedy world. While working with the Hooters restaurant chain to train waitresses and help set up new branches, she decided to try her luck at an amateur night at Yuk Yuk’s in downtown Toronto. Not only did she find developing herself as a stand-up comic a means of personal entertainment, but it had other benefits as well. “It was there that I discovered that having a sense of humour can make you feel quite useful and engaging. In a way, you feel that you have joined a like-minded community,” she said. In the summer of 2007, after graduating from Ryerson – and continuing her Hooters corporate job – Katherine decided to follow her thenboyfriend to England because he wanted to spend some time exploring London. “I initially tried it for a month. Then it turned out to be three months, then six months, then a year. After that, I decided to stay,” she said. • July 28, 2018

While she was working at an office job in London, Katherine made the decision to give stand-up comedy another try. And what she discovered was a whole new world when it came to how British comedians approached their brand of humour, and the audiences they were set to entertain. “The British love pop culture, especially TV and celebrities, and its comedians are influenced not only by their peers, but also by the culture and the politics in the UK. They are always interested what I had to say about these topics, especially because I am an out-

sider. It’s like a melting pot of influences, and hanging around other British comics was like college. You start and grow up with the same group of people,” she said. What also helped Katherine’s development as a comic in Britain was that she was fortunate to be surrounded by – as well as influenced by – different generations of comics, such as Jimmy Carr, Frankie Boyle and Jo Brand (aka “The Sea Monster”). She even got the chance to be the opening act for Stewart Francis, a Canadian comic who resides in Britain, during one of his tours.

From there, Katherine became a widely-seen figure in the British comedy scene, whether it be as a comedian, actress, writer or presenter (emcee) on a variety of British television panel shows, sitcoms, comedy specials and series. In 2016, she embarked on her own cross-UK tour called “Kathbum”, which evolved into her own Netflix special “Katherine Ryan: In Trouble” the following year. And now Katherine has returned to Canada in general – and Just For Laughs in particular (she performed on the Whitney Cummings gala back

www.mtltimes.ca

in 2013) – to display her talents as a comedian and presenter to host “The Stand Show with Katherine Ryan” from July 25 to 27 at the L’Astral; the six shows that are going to be part of this series – and are going to be taped for later broadcast on the Comedy Network -- will showcase a wide variety of stand up comics from around the world such as Andy Kindler, Tim Dillon, Graham Chittenden, Ms. Pat, Colin Quinn, Mark Forward, Nish Kumar, Todd Glass, Matteo Lane and Big Jay Oakerson. “The Stand Up Show is going to be a celebration of the range of diverse

voices that makes up what stand-up comedy is all about. There is no right or wrong way to how to be a stand-up comic,” she said. “Right now, it’s another amazing time for stand-up comedy. There is so much social and political unrest going on these days, that people are turning to comedians more than ever, because they feel that they are reaching out to them through their comedy.” For more information – or to purchase tickets – The Stand Up Show with Katherine Ryan or any other Just For Laughs show, go to: www.hahaha.com

here was a time when people would pay steep prices for a taste of melon. Around the turn of the century, the Montreal Melon is said to have been sold in New York City for $1 per slice, what would now be the equivalent of about $24 today. Considered one of the top delicacies of the world at its time, this melon was a whopping 20 pounds and was valued for its texture and special nutmeg flavour. The heyday of the Montreal melon, however, was short lived, the farms were bought by developers and the sensitive melon was not robust enough to be grown on industrial farms. Modern technology has vastly improved the availability of melons and this is a good thing since what has remained the same is a hunger and thirst for these juicy and healthy fruits. The watermelon was once enjoyed only in summer months and many of us can remember a time when eating it involved some oral agility- sucking the flesh of the melon while allowing the seeds to stay in the mouth was a skill that we were all motivated to learn quickly. But seed spitting competitions may soon be a thing of the past since seedless varieties are now the norm. Once viewed as a nutritionally devoid sweet treat, water-

Lycopene, an antioxidant found in the red pigment of the watermelon is believed to have an anti-inflammatory effect in the body and is linked with heart health, bone health and cancer prevention. For many years, cantaloupe, honeydew, and watermelon were about the only melons that were available. Now, many

stores and local farmers are selling heirloom varieties, each with their own unique and subtle flavour notes. Increasingly, we see the yellow melon with its mellow honeyed flavour, the intensely sweet sugar baby melon and cantaloupe-like hami melon with its sweet and crisp flesh. Even the Montreal melon has been revived but interest in this melon ebbs and flows and many farmers have given up on growing this delicate crop. Local melons always taste best, so summer is the

time to enjoy this hydrating and nutritious treat. When I first heard of putting watermelon in gazpacho, I was reluctant but then delighted after tasting it; the melon adds a subtle sweetness to the soup that balances out the flavours. Watermelon Gazpacho Serves 4 appetizer-size bowls

• 3 medium tomatoes • 1 small red onion • ½ English cucumber • 1 cup of watermelon • 1 small clove of garlic • 2 tbsp. red wine vinegar • ½ tsp of green Tabasco • Sauce or 1/2 chilli pepper • ½ tsp salt • ¼ tsp pepper • Juice of ½ lime • Fresh oregano (for garnishing) • Olive oil

Directions:

Throw all ingredients in a blender and on a low setting, blend until you have an even consistency. Chill and serve garnished with oregano a drizzle of olive oil on each bowl. An oft-overlooked aspect of training for sports activity is that of training for power. (Power is related to strength and speed of movement). Power surprisingly is critical in sports activities such as golf and tennis and not only in sports like football and hockey. Vinho Verde the ultimate summer wine By Marco Giovanetti mtltimes.ca

Few wines symbolize summer quite like Vinho Verde. These refreshing, young wines are fun, simple to drink and the perfect companion for the outdoors in the sun. They’re also quite affordable. The Vinho Verde selection at the SAQ is under $22 a bottle which makes them accessible for every budget. These are wines of pleasure that serve their purpose perfectly, to enjoy the playful nature of summer. Made in Portugal, Vinho

Verde literally means “green wine” in Portuguese and its name implies that the wine has to be drunk in its youth when the wine is alive. Even though it’s not carbonated, as a result of their youth Vinho Verde’s can have a slight effervescent quality ( frizzante) that accentuates the wine’s refreshing acidity. For some novice wine lovers, drinking a glass of Vinho Verde can evoque memories of quenching down a lemonade.

Gazela Vinho Verde. ( White) SAQ # 10667351 $9.55

Zingy citrus fruit and frizzantino in the mouth. This young and simple wine is delightful on its own and matches surprinsigly well for shellfish, like clams and oysters.

Morgadio Da Torre Alvarinho 2015 ( White) SAQ # 1321244. $19.95

Lovely Exhuberant aromatic nose. Beautiful tones of stony fruit, macinstoh apples, with a touch of wild fennel. On the mouth, structured with lots of tension, like an Stradivarius. . Elegant with poise and attitude. Delicious zesty and white pepper finale. Pair with cod pil pil style.

Aveleda Vinho Verde 2016 ( White) SAQ # 00005322 $10.70

Vinho Verde region has a beautiful historical precedence.WIth 22 centuries of winemaking tradition under the belt, winegrowing goes back to the time of Pliny, the Roman philosopher. In addition, Vinho Verde was one of the first Portuguese wines to be exported in European markets. Finally, the region was delimited in 1908. The region the wine comes from is one of Portugal's largest, and the landscape where it grows is lush and green, located right near the Atlantic ocean. It actually conjures images of Ireland Those oceanic breezes assist in the development of the bright fruit that’s used to make this refreshing wine, and it’s the ideal representation of the place it’s made, the perfect wine for the lake. Composed of nine subregions in the Douro Valley, each with a particular microclimates but granitic soils being the common denominator, the Vinho Verde wine region begins right below the Portuguese-Spanish border, and continues all the way to the Atlantic Ocean, where it encounters the city of Port.Vinho Verde is humid rainy, as two rivers pass through it, the Douro and Minho.

Almost of all Vinho Verde bottlings are a blend of white grapes, native to Portugal, but there are two majority varieties that producers recognize to have more potential than others: Alvarinho and Loureiro.Albarinho is

with a more high strung acidic profile. Vinho Verde also makes a tiny amount of rose and red. Red blends include traditional coupages of indigenous Minhao and Borracal. On the other hand, rose is made with Espadeiro and Padeiro. However, the production is tiny. For instance, 84% of the production of Vinho Verde is white, with the remainder divided in 10% red and 6% rose. These are 2014 figures from the trade body of Vinho Verde. All over Portugal, seafood is a major protagonist in the cuisine, particularly the white fish the same grape from bacalao (cod). One of the northern Spain but with a most folkloric regional different spelling In Spain, dishes is creamy rice with Albarinho tends to be hunks of cod and shrimp. somewhat rounder and White Vinho Verde has a softer than its Portuguese high acidity, which makes cousin. Alvarinho displays it ideal for pairing differexotic tropical aromas ent types of seafood, parwith a zesty lemony char- ticularly when they are acter and is high in acidity; coated with fried breadLoureiro is more floral, crumbs.

Lemony profile with stony exotic white fruit and peach tea character. Fresh and saline with a complex floral and spice taste profile. Long and racy finale. Amazing value for the price. Have it with seafood tapas or by itself bathing in the sun.

Quinta de Gomariz Loureiro 2016 ( White) SAQ # 11895233 $16.30

Very big on mineral aromas of smoke, naphthalene. In addition, bay leaf ,meyer lemon and pineapple leaf. On the mouth, fresh and pungent with lots of herbal flavors. This is a serious wine that demands attention with a nice plate of oysters.

Aveleda Casal Garcia Vinho Verde 2015 ( Rose ) SAQ # 12840808 $11.55

On the nose, rhubarb, watermelon and cantaloupe. On the palate, medium body, frizzante. A hint of residual sugar in the finale. Pleasant by itself in a hot summer day by the pool.

Anselmo Mendes Vinho Verde ( Red) Pardusco 2013

On the nose, quite leathery, with red cherry and spice nuances. Medium body, with barnyard and earthy nuances. Medium length finish. Try it with a filet mignon and roasted potatoes. • July 28, 2018

ince the passing of their son Matthew at the age of 18, George and Fatima Salsa have been heading up his mission. Matthew Salsa was a very compassionate person, who loved helping others. George and Fatima have received support from their friends, family and their Fix Auto family, raising over 200,000 dollars for charity in just four years. This year their goal is to raise over 100,000 dollars for the fifth anniversary of the Matthew Salsa Memorial Tournament. To reach this goal George & Fatima have created a Gofundme campaign so that more people can contribute to Matthew's mission: https://www.gofundme.com/matthew-salsa-memorial-tournament This tournament was created to honour Matthew who suddenly passed away in 2012 while he was playing his favourite sport. At 18 years old, Matthew was completely dedicated to his passion, playing golf, and more importantly a great individual and a model citizen. Admirably, Matthew’s parents have chosen to pledge the funds raised from their son’s tournament to helping others, following in his footsteps, as he was known for his generosity and selflessness throughout his short life. In order to do so, they chose to give back to Sun Youth Organization (and also to Junior Golf in Quebec) so that youngsters can play a sport they love while also gaining precious life lessons. Sun Youth offers children ages 5 to 12 a fun and educational day camp, and youth ages 8 to 17 the chance to join the organization’s football or basketball teams while supporting their education. Annually, more than 600 children take part in the Sun Youth sports programs. The 5th Annual Matthew Salsa Memorial Tournament will be held on Monday, August 20th at the Rosemère Golf Club located at 282, boulevard Labelle in Rosemère. For info on the tournament and to register, visit www.matthewsalsa .com. Those unable to attend but still wanting to make a difference are invited make a donation on the tournament's GoFundMe campaign page.

Never be dry again By Martha Shannon mtltimes.ca

Moisturizing your dry itchy skin should be a delightful experience. It usually is not. You may have some temporary relief from the prescribed cream, but the issue does not go away. You have decided cortisone may NOT be the best option, but you are desperate and do not know where to turn or what to do. We have some suggestions for you.Your skin can cease feeling uncomfortable. It should feel amazing. All you have to do is be chemical free and you can feel the difference after even one shower or bath. It may not always be perfect for we know climate, food, environment, medications etc. affect us all. But there are things we can do. Start with a good soap

The soap is vital. It is where you have to start. We have many blogs on soaps and you can always refer to our website. Enough to say, it is best to use a homemade, natural soap bar all over. After Cleansing: Moisturize

ucts that can aggravate an already existing problem, like dryness, itchiness, rashes. No hidden formaldehyde to pollute the body and dry you out. X Cream: The beeswax base offers a smooth texture making the cream a little thicker than our usual face cream. Our customers love this cream on dry, itchy skin and report testimonials galore on soothing eczema and psoriasis prone skin. It can be used all over. Sheamu Butter: A blend of our unrefined organic shea straight from a co-op in Burkina Faso blended with Australian unrefined emu oil. A gourmet delight on the skin, all over. A butter may take a few extra minutes to absorb but this 100% natural blend plays wonders on the skin. Not only moisturizing but soothing and relieving for many many skin conditions. Zinc Oxide Blend: We have reviewed the importance of zinc many times in the past. See Less Pink with Zinc. From soothing baby diaper rash to protecting against harsh weathers, zinc is a natural go to for skin care. Our blend will not stay white. It can be massaged gently into the skin. Neem Salve: Never travel or be without your neem. We generally recommend neem as a ‘spot soother’ for many issues, rather than all over body

blend. But no problem in covering larger areas, like the entire foot, should need by. This miracle tree oil from India is a ‘10’ in natural skin care. Our customers use it on any skin problem that seems unsolvable. Shargan Butter: A vegan alternative to the Sheamu. Creamy, silky nourishing and delightful. Yes, you need to massage it in. It is a butter so it takes a little work, depending on the room temperature, etc. Read the testimonials on each of the products to learn what amazing solutions our customers experienced. You may find a product that you might wish to try for your situation. You can always visit our shop, go online or call us with any questions. The utensils used in the photo do conjure images of meal time. While we do not sell our products for actual consumption, it is not an outrageous thought. After all, most of the ingredients are enjoyed for consumption daily in many parts of the world.
