tatistics Canada says by 2030, the year in which the youngest baby boomers will reach 65, close to one in four people in Canada will be that age or older. That compares to 15.3 per cent in 2013. Data released by the Conference Board of Canada projects that the exodus of retirees from the workforce will slow Canada's economic growth to an annualized rate of 1.7 per cent in the years between 2019 and 2021. Compare this to a rate averaging 2.8 per cent between 2000 and 2008. Is retirement becoming a dirty word? Lots of people are choosing to work past 65 years old. This is by choice for now. Will governments start to change the age to receive benefits? As the biggest demographic wave in Canada's history reaches retirement age, the province of Nova Scotia believes it knows how to weather the economic storm: encourage baby boomers to work longer. Right now in Nova Scotia, 19 per cent of the population is over 65. By 2040 that will grow to 30 per cent. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick have the oldest populations in the country. The government is keen to convince even more seniors that there's no need to head off to a life of leisure when you can stay employed and collect a paycheque. Really? We can have the

What has happened with Dunham since he and Walter appeared at Just For Laughs 22 years ago? He has expanded his repertoire of characters (including “Achmed the Dead Terrorist” and “Melvin the Superhero Guy”); his performance video clips have garnered over a billion views on YouTube; his comedy specials on Comedy Central, NBC and Netflix has achieved record-breaking ratings; his DVDs has sold By Stuart Nulman a total of well over four million copies; Billboard mtltimes.ca magazine named him as “Jose Jalapeno on a Stick”, the Top Comedy Tour for a talking Mexican jalapeno three years; he was recogpepper that happens to nized by Forbes magazine be on a stick. And now, 27 years since his festival debut – and 22 years since his last appearance here – Jeff Dunham returns to Just For Laughs as the host of two back-to-back multi-comic galas on July 27 at Salle Wilfrid Pelletier of Place des Arts. Although Dunham feels quite excited about the prospect of his pending Just For Laughs homecoming, he feels a slight sense of trepidation about it. “I feel like the unloved, red-headed stepchild of the comedy world. Here I am, a grown man in his 50s, sitting onstage with dolls. And that’s normal? Is that a joke?,” said Dunham during a recent phone in-

terview. “But in reality, I am having a blast. I really feel like the kid who got beat up in school and then gets chosen to play first base on the baseball team. It’s a huge honour for me to return to Just For Laughs as a gala host, and I can’t wait to go back on the festival stage.” Dunham started his interest in ventriloquism at the age of eight in his hometown of Dallas, when he got a ventriloquist dummy for a Christmas present. “I then began to teach myself how to be a ventriloquist. And as a result, it helped to make me

popular in school because I used it as a secret weapon to get me laughs. I could make fun of the principal and get away with it. And then I started doing performances with the dummy and got paid for it. I found out that I had no reason to quit,” he said. He believes that ventriloquism really came into the show business forefront in the 1930s and 40s, when his idol Edgar Bergen and puppet Charlie McCarthy became major stars thanks to their highly rated Chase & Sanborn Hour radio pro-

Free Report Reveals How to Avoid Getting Stuck Owning Two Homes

MONTREAL - West Island - Every month, thousands of homeowners are faced with the stressful dilemma of whether to buy first or sell first. You see, if you buy before selling, you could run the risk of owning two homes. Or, just as bad, if you sell first, you could end up homeless. It's what insiders in the industry call the Real Estate Catch 22, and it's an extremely anxious position to find yourself in. This financial and emotional tightrope is one you usually have to walk alone because most agents have no way of helping you with this predicament. But one local realtor is using a unique Guaranteed Sale Program which solves this dilemma. This program guarantees the sale of your present home before you take possession of your new one. If your home doesn't sell in 120 days, they will buy it from you themselves for the previously agreed price ensuring that you never get caught in the Real Estate • July 21, 2018

gram. “Before Bergen, ventriloquists were part of vaudeville line-ups. They were the acts who went onstage as the curtain went down, so that they can appear in front of the curtain as the stage was being set up for the next act,” he said. “Edgar Bergen was the Seinfeld of the radio era. His characters like Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd were seen as real people, and they soon became headlining superstars.”

Catch 22. Before you hire any professional, you should research the market to find out who can do the best job for you. When interviewing agents, find out what kind of guarantee they are willing to give you with respect to the selling of your home. Unfortunately, you'll find that most agents simply cannot make such a guarantee. To help you learn more about this program and how it can make your move less stressful, a FREE special report has been prepared entitled "How to Avoid Getting Stuck with Two Homes". Fantasia Film Festival so far

I

"Dans la brume" ("In the Mist") was the opening movie at Fantasia: the fears of natural disasters By Sergio Martinez mtltimes.ca

f fantasy, science-fiction, or horror are your preferred movie genres, the Fantasia Film Festival, which started this past July 12 and will run until August 2, is the place to be. Most of the shows take place at the downtown campus of Concordia University, with a few other events at the Imperial Theatre, the McCord Museum and the Cinémathèque Québécoise. I mention here some of the films I had the occasion to see in the first few days of the festival. DANS LA BRUME (IN THE MIST): This FranceCanada co-production directed by Daniel Roby was the opening film, and it was a good beginning for the event. With a theme that touches the somehow unpredictable events caused by nature— in this case, an earthquake that in turn unleashes the release of mysterious toxic fumes from within the earth— the result is chaos and death to Parisians. Mathieu (Romain Duris) and his wife Anna (Olga Kurylenko) are at the centre of this natural tragedy. The fact that their daughter suffers from a genetic disorder that forces her to live in a hermetic box that filters the air makes the survival of the family even more complicated. The story is simple and benefits from the appeal of the disaster genre. The film has an unpredictable ending that somehow deflates the preceding dramatic build-

up, but it still presents an interesting plot. Those who missed the screening at Fantasia will have a new chance when the movie is released in theatres. TRUE FICTION: The issue of political corruption, in this case in South Korea but it may be anywhere, is the subject of this film directed by Kim Jin-mook. When aspiring politician Kyung-suk (Oh Man-Seok) after some obscure movement of money in the company of the local senator who is also his father-in-law, arrives at a regional headquarter of his party to be presented by his as the future city mayor, all seems to be going his way. He must now finish some delicate and confidential task on behalf of the senator. Kyung is now driving his car, he has also taken his lover with him, and when he arrives at his destination, he finds that the task would get more complicated than expected. A significant difficulty would be the presence of the

housekeeper, Soon-tae (Ji Hyun-woo) who is an unpublished writer willing to have a good topic for his novel. Things will get more complicated mostly because of Kyung's incompetence, and the unexpected presence of other characters. Kyung's wife would also get involved after she learns that her husband is with his mistress, violence would ensue, after that, Kyung's aspirations seem to be fulfilled. Except for a detail that nobody considered. TREMBLE ALL YOU WANT: It is difficult to classify this movie into any particular genre, it's somehow a romantic comedy, or perhaps more accurately, an anti-romantic one, if such kind exists. This Japanese film is directed by Akiko Ohku and features Mayu Matsuoka as Yoshika, a 24-year-old woman working at the accounting section of a large company. She is alone, doesn't have a boyfriend, and her only hobby is to

lastic bags have been banned, well sort of: they are still around although in a sturdier shape (and more expensive too). For some strange reason, policymakers think that these new bags are less damaging to the environment. Why didn't they go for paper bags instead or if they still wanted plastic, just biodegradable ones? It seems that those who design environmental policies move "in mysterious ways" too. Some people have been mentioning plastic bottles as the next target in their campaign to save our oceans, but that would mean to face compelling players in the corporate world: Coke, Pepsi, Nestlé, hmm, I have my doubts whether there would be much action on this front. Then and still in the area of drinks and sodas, a new target has been found: plastic straws. Just last week a bar in Montreal has decided to move away from straws in their drinks. In fact, you don't need a straw to sip your favourite cocktail or soft drink. The bar owner explained that people with some disability that may require the little device

would still get one, but not the general public. Outside the bar scene, small children drinking soda in a restaurant may still need a straw too. In the final analysis, however, straws are not really necessary, they were introduced mostly to add a sign of sophistication to the act of drinking especially those fancy cocktails where one has to deal with pieces of ice and fruits. A significant expression of sophistication in

By Sergio Martinez mtltimes.ca

this matter came with the production of glass straws, elegant devices that I remember my father once brought home to use when drinking a cold rum and coke (a "Cuba Libre") his favourite cocktail.

Regarding drinking straws, however, there is an interesting detail that should not be overlooked: in the beginning, they were very environmentally-friendly, since they were by-products of wheat and other harvests which would degrade naturally into the environment. Why do you think they are called "straws"? They were the dry, tubelike twigs of various plants, cut to fit into a bottle or a glass. I remember during my childhood in the 1950s drinking soft drinks with the help of real, natural straw. Of course, eventually the natural straw had to give way to the synthetic one: "Plastics" said Mr. Maguire to recent graduate Benjamin in the iconic 1967 movie "The Graduate," adding, "There is a great future in plastics. Think about it. Will you think about it?" Undoubtedly many people since then have been thinking about this ubiquitous material which invaded every single human area, and eventually ended up replacing the original straw. Now the time may come to replace the plastic straw, Vancouver has been the first major city

14.75/

in Canada to announce it will ban the use of plastic straws by the fall of 2019, and our Prime Minister made a proposal to the other G7 members during their meeting in June to take action in this same direction. Individual jurisdictions in Canada are expected to move to ban the straws too. The replacements? Well, natural

ones from our own cereal harvests would be nice and would bring me some nostalgic memories, another natural substitute would be bamboo straws, but the most likely alternative would be made of treated paper. One thing is sure, shortly at your favourite bar you won't find the ubiquitous plastic straw.

J are evergreen and can adapt to any type of material, the thought and creative process that Dunham commits toward developing new characters depends upon the audience. “Over the past 15 years, I have created new characters as a response to what has been going on in society. As well, a new character not only has to respond with the audience, but to resonate with them as well,” he said. “I always like to joke about politics. It’s like a china shop that moves its shelves a little bit

closer to each other; how far can you go before the bull comes in? And when it comes to political material, I like to entertain as many people as possible on both sides.” With that in mind, Dunham will introduce a new character at his galas that responds to the current volatile political situation. “His name is ‘Larry’, and he works as a personal advisor to Trump in the White House,” he said. “Larry is a rather conflicted character with a lot of problems. And so far, he has been going over

pretty well with audiences in North America and especially Europe.” With the tremendous success he has experienced as a ventriloquist and comedian for almost two decades, Dunham believes that there has been renewed interest in ventriloquism as a whole. “That interest has been refreshed thanks to the new blood who perform on reality competition TV shows like America’s Got Talent,” he said. “But somehow, it reminds me of the scenario of the father and son who are

playing a video game together, and the son dares to suggest about the idea of becoming a ventriloquist and turning it into an arena act. There are times that I still think of that scenario, only this time, the son suggests about the next great dog act than can fill a 10,000-seat arena!” For more information – or to purchase tickets – to the Jeff Dunham galas on July 27 or any other Just For Laughs show, go to: www.mtltimes.ca

Earl De La Perralle will forever be remembered as someone who truly loved life and who made sure everyone around him felt the same. With the help of passionate volunteers and coaches such as (from left to right) Patrick Yoshy, Anthony Jacques, Dimitrios Manolopoulos, Gerry Pelletier, Coach Earl allowed many youngsters to discover a sport they love.

T

he recent passing away of Sun Youth co-founder Earl De La Perralle was a big loss to the organization, as you can imagine. Sun Youth would like to take this opportunity to invite the public to the Midget home opener game on August 11th, 1pm, at Jeanne-Mance Park in memory of Coach Earl. For as long as Sun Youth has had a football program, the organization's cofounder Earl De La Perralle has been at its helm, allowing it to grow tremendously over the last decades. Anybody involved with youth football in Quebec knows the name Earl De La Perralle or as he’s often referred to, “the Godfather”. As president of the Quebec Midget Football League, he was also instrumental in the development of amateur football in Quebec and great influence and inspiration to countless athletes and fellow coaches. Through the sports programs at Sun Youth, he positively affected the lives of

thousands of young Montrealers by focusing on the development of personal responsibility and education. It was always important to him that every kid had a right to play the sports they love. Earl emphasized the value of gaining an education through sport, moving on to university and gaining the skills to create success throughout a lifetime. The Sun Youth Hornets are now one of the best managed amateur football organizations in the Province, and many alumni have successfully gone on to play in the college, university and even professional levels. In memory of Sun Youth mentor and cofounder Earl De La Perralle, join us on August 11th, 1pm. Following the game (as of 4 pm), coaches, alumni, parents and friends are invited at Sun Youth to celebrate Earl'l life and legacy. This will be the perfect opportunity to share good memories of this larger than life man and rally up to make sure that his vision lives on.

Absolutely Apple On The Skin By Martha Shannon mtltimes.ca

Wear an apple. Don't just eat it. ‘Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread’. Many of us know the version of this original Pembrokeshire (a county southwest Wales) proverb as ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’. An apple is truly a fruit to be respected. But it is not only for consumption. In natural skin care, ‘wearing’ an apple is wise.Treat your skin to the juice and or pulp of an organic apple. An Earth to Body testimonial on an apple: “I love your emu neem soap. I moisturize with emu oil and use the toner. But when I started washing and rinsing my hair AND FACE with your apple cider vinegar blend, I have naught to see a pimple! My skin is baby soft and clean and oh so CLEAR!” Our ‘apple delight’ is our organic Apple Cider Vinegar hair rinse product. It is nutrient source of biotin and procyanidin B-2 for stimulating hair growth, preventing hair loss, dandruff and promoting healthier hair. Along with the rosemary, parsley and sage is it a nutritious treat for hair, scalp and skin. We recommend it once or twice a week. Of course, you make your own apple treats

Skin manage this miracle fruit Use juice, apple puree or grated apple for any of the following Apple Aids to the Skin. Make your own apple juice, puree or grated apple. If this is not an option for juice, fresh juice can be purchased from a local farmer or health food store, unprocessed. (Commercial processed apple juice, unfortunately, should not to be considered as a substitute. Your skin deserves the real thing that conserves the nutrients.) Juice and Puree: Buy a bag of organic apples. Wash and core them. Slice the apples with the peel on. In a pot add just enough water to cover the apples. Boil until soft 20-25 minutes Using a fine mesh strainer with cheesecloth or even a coffee filter, scoop out the softened apples and gently mash, filtering the juice into a bowl. Throw nothing out. The mush left is your apple puree. Keep the apple mush to make an applesauce puree to be consumed, or made into a facial mask. Add a little cinnamon to the puree for an added treat. Cinnamon on the skin helps keep the skin clear (pimples, acne, blemishes etc.) and nourishes the hair, making it stronger

and healthier.Your skin can enjoy a facial mask as this good apple food has great anti-aging benefits, cleanses and eliminates fine lines and wrinkles. Leave on about 10-15 minutes and rinse off. Too much sun? Grated apple or puree mixed with tamanu, emu or argan oil is a wonderful soother after too much sun and will help prevent peeling. Dark circles around the eyes? A couple of apple slices, apple juice or apple puree will help to reduce dark circles around the eyes. Or, soak cotton ball with a little of our apple cider vinegar blend and dab under the eyes. Allow it to dry naturally. Do not let the acv enter the eye. Any homemade concoction will not have the commercial chemical preservatives so it should be refrigerated and consumed within the week, or less. Making your own natural skin nutrition is not new. Humans have been doing so for centuries. We are encouraging the concept. But, as this is not always possible, we do make natural skin care for you. ‘La Boutique Earth to Body’, 89 Lucerne, Pointe Claire, QC H9R 2V1. Write to us at: info@natural.ca

his movie is based on the real story of cartoonist John Callahan who died in 2010, although with the expected artistic licence to treat some of the events. The celebrated director Gus Van Sant approaches the subject keeping a delicate balance between some of the most comedic aspects of the story, the dramatic ones –certainly the circumstances that led to, and the accident itself that resulted in Callahan (Joaquin Phoenix) ending up a quadriplegic, and the romance. Indeed the latter, involving Callahan's relation with the beautiful Swede Annu (Rooney Mara), is the least developed, perhaps because of some apprehension on the part of Van Sant, to indulge in a Hollywoodstyle treatment of the topic. In any case, the result is a film of solid dramatic construction in which the different emotional ele-

ments affecting Callahan: his solitude, his search for his biological mother, and his existential predicament, provide the spectator with a sympathetic view of the character's life despite his self-destructive drinking addiction. One can also see the transformation of Callahan, from his care-free attitude that leads him to engage in compulsive drinking with his friend Dexter (Jack Black) with whom he would have the accident that would change his life, to his pursuit of drawing, his attempt at rehabilitation both physical and mental when he joins Alcoholic Anonyms, and of course to the relation with Annu. would also bring him to meet another important character who would be instrumental in his transformation: Donnie (Jonah Hill) who in turn would carry with him another personal drama. "Don't Worry He Won't Get Far on Foot" is a movie that deals with a subject that can be disturbing: the man who suffers a terrible accident that changes his life, but at the same time, it is a film that presents a story in realistic but optimistic terms. I recommend it as a very humanistic approach to life under extreme circumstances. The subject of the movie may not be of interest to young audiences. Length: 113 min.
