The Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce & Industry takes great pleasure in bringing you the 2016-2018 edition of the Montego Bay Guide, a collector’s item and investment manual showcasing the beauty, charm and amenities of Jamaica’s ‘Complete Resort’. It is also timely given the seven year hiatus of the publication, a period that has seen remarkable infrastructural and real estate development, particularly in the hospitality and business process outsourcing industries. Over the last decade, a number of new resorts and BPO companies have opened their doors or expanded their foothold, particularly along the Elegant Corridor and the Freeport area and we have welcomed new developments in Fairfield, with the impressive new Barnett Tech Park - a clear show of confidence in what Jamaica and Montego Bay 4 in particular has to offer.

There is much going well for Montego Bay, but we cannot rest on our laurels as there is also much to do to continue to improve our road, transportation and logistics networks to establish and sustain an enabling environment for local business growth and continue to attract international investment. Montego Bay remains Jamaica’s epicentre for entertainment, hospitality and business process outsourcing as we position ourselves to be part of the national conversation on the way forward for Jamaica and its citizens. We invite you to continue to engage, challenge and partner with us as Together We Build Jamaica, Land We Love!

The explosive growth of the Fairview Business Complex reflects just how much Montego Bay has developed in the last five years in particular. We as a Chamber are continuously developing

FFAD Each year the MBCCI stages signature events, forums and workshops to engage, empower and entertain its membership and the wider Montego Bay community. Several of these also serve as fund-raisers to support the Chamber’s secretariat and various community-based initiatives throughout the year. The now annual Fashion Food And Dance [FFAD] staged each January has quickly become a favourite. The fund-raiser is hosted at the elegant Shoppes at Rose Hall and features delicacies from partner JHTA members and local businesses. The highlight of the event features companies sponsoring ‘corporate models’ to strut their stuff on the catwalk wearing fashion by local marquis stores and designers. Ms. Jamaica World 2015 Dr. Sanneta Myrie was the special guest for the January 2016 edition with live entertainment by Fab 5 featuring Gem Myers. MYMOBAY MyMoBay is a holistic public education initiative focused on engaging our citizens and organizations to bring awareness and positive action regarding environmental, commercial and human factors affecting Montego Bay. It is the brainchild of the MBCCI and funded by the Tourism Enhancement Fund supported by corporate and civic partners including Itel BPO, Montego Bay Marine Park Trust,

17 Business Process Outsourcing (BPO)

Welcome W

When Brand Jamaica is mentioned anywhere in the world several sights, sounds, tastes and smells readily come to mind. Visitors and investors think of the beauty of the landscape, pristine beaches and the rich cultural diversity of the peoples from the land of reggae and track legends like Bob Marley and Usain Bolt; the very same land of wood and water recently voted by Forbes as the best country to do business in the Caribbean. Montego Bay is the capital of the parish of St. James, situated on the northern end of the island of Jamaica. A burgeoning city with newly developed commercial and residential projects, the city remains on the cutting edge of infrastructural and technological activity and has been selected by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) as one of the pilot cities for the bank’s Emerging and Sustainable City Initiatives.

Tourism, Sports and Culture The city holds the enviable reputation of being the tourism capital of the Caribbean and as such opportunities for investments in this area continue to be of significance for foreign investors. The demand for additional hotel rooms and attractions makes Montego Bay the place of choice for new investments in this area. Tourism is the main foreign exchange earner for Jamaica and Montego Bay. From luxurious world-class golf resorts, high-end villas, boutique properties and quaint hillside accommodations, Montego Bay serves up an exciting buffet of natural beauty, great entertainment, art and culture and enough of a city experience to cater to the most discerning traveller. Avid sports and entertainment enthusiasts aren’t left behind either. With five championship golf courses in

to montego bay the area, Montego Bay may very well be the golf capital of the Caribbean. Resorts where golfers can tee up and indulge include Half Moon Golf, Tennis & Beach Club, Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa and Tryall Golf, Tennis & Beach Club. On Gloucester Avenue, the “Hip Strip”, visitors have easy access to some of the best dining and entertainment options MoBay has to offer.

Education, Science and Technology The city of Montego Bay is fast becoming a hub for higher educational opportunities. Over the last decade established local universities namely the University of the West Indies and University of Technology have opened branch campuses. This has been buttressed by the newer universities, Northern Caribbean University and the International University of the Caribbean, setting up base as well. With this level of added support to the long tradition of excellence in tertiary level training offered by the Montego Bay Community College, The Sam Sharpe Teachers College and other technical and vocational educational institutions such as HEART-NTA, the city’s human capital is set to respond positively to the acknowledged growth potential areas such as business process outsourcing and agro-business, among others.

Investment Opportunities Available The Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry is committed to the development of the city and actively involved in ongoing beautification projects. We continue to lobby for new business opportunities and an enabling environment to support the establishment and growth of infrastructural projects in support of the city’s sustainable development agenda.

The city is the epicentre of Jamaica’s BPO industry, which provides a variety of fiscal and non-fiscal incentives for investors to operate within this industry. A number of call centres currently operate from the city’s Free Trades Zones providing mainly customer and back office services to North American and Canadian companies. The main fiscal incentives to operate in the Free Trade Zones include income tax relief, value added tax relief and exemption from duty on capital goods.

Agriculture Montego Bay is launching new developments in Agriculture, utilizing the Agro Park model. An Agro Park is an area of intensive, contiguous, parcel of land for agricultural production which seeks to integrate all facets of the agricultural value chain from pre-production to production, post harvesting and marketing. Three areas have been identified within close proximity to the city to offer opportunities to investors to participate in this economic activity.

18 Light-Manufacturing /Assembly MoBay is strategically located to be a hub for light-manufacturing and assembly type investment activities. Logistically the city is in the main shipping and airline routes into North and Central American markets as well as the greater Caribbean region. Our free zones will be transitioning to Special Economic Zones providing even more incentives for firms seeking to do contract manufacturing.

Port Development Our strategic location is ideally suited for cargo port development and given the government’s push to establish Jamaica as the 4th node in the Global Logistics Hub, now is an ideal time to seriously take a look at Montego Bay as an important player in this space. The city of Montego Bay is the fastest growing regionally. There has never been a more exciting time to invest, live in and explore Montego Bay. Become a member of, or partner with the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce & Industry as we work together to create a grander vision and sustainable development model for our city as Together We Build!

and Attractions

O

Once called el Golfo de Buen Tiempo (Fair Weather Gulf), Montego Bay’s rich history includes stories of Spanish conquistadors, grand sugar plantations and infamous slave rebellions, namely the Sam Sharpe Rebellion of 1831. Today, Montego Bay is Jamaica’s second largest city and the island’s most popular tourist region. In spite of its development, the city’s colourful past is still alive in the relics that stand throughout the town.

The Dome

A walking tour of downtown Montego Bay would reveal many historical gems in relative close proximity to each other. The ST JAMES PARISH CHURCH is an 18th-century edifice boasting numerous plaques and monuments, commemorating the lives of several prominent figures in the history of St James, including members of the Barrett, Kerr and Jarrett families. Of note are two marble monuments, created by John Bacon, a famous 18th-century British sculptor. Typical of parish churches, the building possesses an old pipe organ and many beautiful stained glass windows. THE DOME was built in 1837. This brick edifice guarded the creek that supplied much of Montego Bay’s water. The “Keeper of the Creek”, the person responsible for managing the city’s water supply, resided in the dome until the river’s course shifted in the late 19th century. With continued road construction around the Dome, parts of it eventually became covered. THE CAGE, erected in 1806, was used as a temporary prison for slaves, drunken seamen and other vagrants. Slaves found wandering the town after 3:00pm were locked up in the cage. Originally, the Montego Bay Cultural Centre

Rose Hall Great House

20 cage was made out of wood, but it appears its occupants managed to damage the structure and so it was rebuilt with bricks. MONTEGO BAY CULTURAL CENTRE. Opened in 2001, formerly the Civic Centre, it houses a museum dedicated to the history of the parish of St James. The centre was constructed on the site of the old Montego Bay Courthouse, which was built in the 19th century and later destroyed. During its tenure, the old courthouse observed many tumultuous and monumental events, including the trial of Sam Sharpe and his followers, who were all sentenced to death for their involvement in the Christmas Rebellion of 1831. It is a multi-faceted facility with a museum, art gallery, performing arts and conferencing facilities. THE SAM SHARPE MONUMENT designed by Kay Sullivan portrays national hero Samuel Sharpe holding his Bible and speaking to his people. The five statues were cast in bronze in Jamaica. They were unveiled by Prime Minister the Most Honourable Edward Seaga on October 16, 1983 at a ceremony in the Square. The FREEDOM MONUMENT was erected in 2007 to memorialize the enslaved persons who participated in 1831-32 war of emancipation. Leaving downtown MoBay still offers rich cultural options such as RAS NATANGO GALLERY & GARDEN.

Located in the quiet district of Camrose, this attraction is a great way to explore Jamaica’s natural beauty. Due east by way of the ‘HIP STRIP’ is FORT MONTEGO. This old fort once guarded the Montego Bay Harbour and today contains the remains of an artillery store with well-preserved cannons and one of several craft shops in Montego Bay. Driving along Gloucester Avenue we would encounter AQUA SOL BEACH PARK, a multi-faceted theme and events beach facility en route to the world-famous DOCTOR’S CAVE BEACH, literally a stone’s throw away from CORNWALL BEACH which is adjacent to an old JEWISH CEMETERY. Leaving downtown we enter the ELEGANT CORRIDOR in Rose Hall where the nucleus of the city’s tourist resorts adorns the coastline. Overlooking the beautiful Caribbean Sea, on the hills of the former Rose Hall Sugar Estate approximately 10km from Montego Bay, St. James is the iconic ROSE HALL GREAT HOUSE. Many stories abound about its former owner Annie Palmer and the cruelty she meted out to her slaves. Rose Hall Great House, like the nearby GREENWOOD GREAT HOUSE, is a very popular visitor attraction. Another landmark great house due east is BELLEFIELD GREAT HOUSE & GARDENS, a popular wedding venue and historical attraction.

Model Sustainable City in the Making

Montego Bay Convention Centre

T

The city of Montego Bay, widely known to travellers as “the friendly city,” is on the verge of becoming even friendlier, as the vision of a more sustainable city that caters to all citizens and visitors alike, is being ushered into reality. The next three years will see major transformation of the City’s profile as the Urban Development Corporation, the Tourism Enhancement Fund and other corporate partners, consult to advance a series of modernization activities. With its many charms, the city by the sea is constantly a top choice for visitors to the Caribbean region, ranking as the ninth most popular destination for Americans, based on the findings from Travel Leaders Group’s 2016 travel trends survey. Today’s Montego Bay is friendly to those seeking recreational experiences. Its rich history and alluring nuances, however, have been affected by limited infrastructure, congestion, and related social issues. Indulge in the development vision and the Montego Bay of 2018 you will see, features a revitalized hip strip, and a world class intermodal north transportation hub. Pedestrians and cyclists move hassle-free along well-shaded and aesthetically pleasing corridors spanning the Hip Strip, Fort Montego Bay, with a redeveloped Sam Sharpe Square being a focal point for pleasant social engagement. The flow of vehicular traffic is reorganized and route-taxis have designated areas separated from regional buses. Central public spaces are redesigned and cleaned-up and sidewalks are enhanced by more shade, small restaurants, and enjoyable open green spaces. Already, coming out of the many stakeholder sessions over the last few years, the plans have been successfully implemented for the design. It also includes the upgrading of the Old Hospital Site to a public recreational park and the upgrading of the Howard Cooke Boulevard. Subsequent phases will see further expansion into nearby lands, continued public engagement and the piloting of the formulated strategies, prior to actual implementation.

Couched in a comprehensive development plan to create a sustainable city, the current efforts will transform the designated areas into an attractive pedestrian and user-friendly environment which will increase customer comfort. As efforts are combined the project will decongest Montego Bay and open up room for further social and economic development. The UDC’s accomplishments in Montego Bay are varied and include development of the Montego Bay Sports Complex at Catherine Hall, the completion of the state-ofthe-art Montego Bay Convention Centre and Montego Bay Cultural Centre. It all started when, in 1972, over 60 acres of land was reclaimed and three beaches created. As a developer in the public interest, the Corporation’s influence has been felt across various sectors in Montego Bay. These include the tourism, health, security, education, cultural and sporting sectors. The Urban Development Corporation – making development happen in the city of Montego Bay and beyond. Entertainment M

Montego Bay is as synonymous with entertainment as it is renowned for spectacular resorts, great shopping and pristine beaches. In its heyday, MoBay boasted many nightclubs bellowing live music influenced by various cultures including our African heritage with samplings of Latin and North American genres. But MoBay is probably best known for its big budget music festivals and marquis entertainment events. From the early days of Club Inferno along what is now the Elegant Corridor along the Rose Hall main road, many of the world’s most popular crooners and musicians performed here. This included Gladys Knight and the Pips, the Temptations, Dionne Warwick, Patti LaBelle and Smokey Robinson to name a few. Montego Bay is used to having the world’s premier acts grace us with their talents. REGGAE SUNSPLASH Many of today’s local festivals follow the blueprint of Jamaica’s first major music event, Reggae Sunsplash, the first of which was staged at Jarret Park in Montego Bay in the summer of 1978 and featured Reggae royalty like Dennis Brown, Steel Pulse, Third World and Africa’s Alpha

Blondy along with popular dancehall and lover’s rock artistes of the day. Billed as the “biggest reggae festival in the history of the world” the festival was positioned as a blend of music and travel to complement Jamaica’s tourism product. In its halcyon days it was common to see tourists camping out on beaches in the daytime awaiting nightfall to experience one of the up to seven nights of the festival. ‘Reggae Beds’ which were typically pieces of card board were commonly used as respite during the long nights as closing acts typically performed at daybreak. REGGAE SUMFEST When Sunsplash faded into the sunset Sumfest took up the baton and kept running. Starting in 1993 and staged in July annually, Reggae Sumfest has diversified the product offering to include popular American and regional acts to appeal to various tastes and age groups. The

festival took the idea of theming each night to a new level with a Beach Party, Sound Clash night and Oldies Night leading into the high energy closing threesome of Dancehall Night and International Nights I & II. The roster of performers has been impressive including Jamaica’s best known local and international acts headlined by R&B, hip hop and pop superstars such as Beyonce, 50 Cent, Rihanna, Usher, Mary J. Blige, R. Kelly, Nicki Minaj and the list goes on. The brand was recently sold to Downsound Entertainment’s Josef Bogdanovich who has committed to returning the

festival to its roots by featuring all Jamaican acts at the 2016 staging of the festival. OCEAN STYLE FASHION SHOWCASE Hitting the runway nine years ago, the Ocean Style Fashion Showcase Weekend has successfully established itself as the pre-eminent Caribbean international centre point for fashionistas, corporate decision-makers and fashion influencers. Featuring golf tournaments and a star-studded array of signature events, this world-class soiree brings in Hollywood

A-Listers and superstar athletes to relax and recharge giving Jamaicans the opportunity to see some of the world’s leading designers at play and meet some of their favourite screen, music and sporting idols. JAMAICA JAZZ & BLUES FESTIVAL

Formerly the Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival, it was created to encourage visitors to come to Jamaica during a traditionally slow tourism period for the island. The original owner of the festival, Air Jamaica, also hoped to sell more airline seats during the slow period.

Another must-have ticket on Montego Bay’s entertainment calendar is Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival.

Targeting jazz and blues enthusiasts, it attracted audiences of up to 2,000 persons and was held in Novem-

ber each year. Various factors including heavy rains which occur at that time of the year encouraged the organizers to move the dates of the festival to the end of January, another traditionally slow tourism period, usually the weekend before America’s NFL Super Bowl. With limited audiences and increasing expenditure, the event eventually became a drain on Air Jamaica’s coffers, and in 2004 the festival was sold to Walter Elmore under whose stewardship the festival grew exponentially, attracting crowds of over 30,000. In 2009 Air Jamaica relinquished the title sponsorship to the Jamaica Tourist Board and the three-day festival became known as the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival. Featuring a more diverse musical blend, the festival’s stage has been graced by the likes of Alicia Keys, Roberta Flack, Celine Dion, Earth, Wind & Fire, Kenny Rogers, Maroon 5, Air Supply, Chaka Khan, India Arie, Michael Bolton, Lionel Richie, Erykah Badu and numerous other local and international music greats.

Montego Bay has long had a creditable health record with several hospitals and medical institutions catering to the local and hospitality markets.

Montego Bay Hospital & Urology Centre

Established government institutions like the Cornwall Regional Hospital as the name suggests, provides health care for persons in surrounding parishes and is the primary health care facility in Western and Central Jamaica. An exciting new entrant to the space is Hospiten Montego Bay, located along the Elegant Corridor in the Rose Hall area. Opened in 2015, this stateof-the-art private hospital is the only private Jamaican hospital with an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), outside the city of Kingston, catering to the medical needs of both local and overseas patients. ing to market analysis company Euromonitor International. Jamaica is ideally poised to attract value-added investments in this area, given the availability of quality medical professionals and the island’s proximity to the United States - the world’s largest potential market for medical tourism. There are investment opportunities for the establishment of diagnostic, general hospital and specialized facilities to cater to the discerning medical tourist.

nation and relaxation. The island’s natural beauty is complemented by an abundance of medicinal herbs and healing springs. Among the opportunities available in this tourism sub-sector are retirement villages and spas. The Emergence of Marijuana A lot has changed on the global health and wellness front over the last decade, especially with a paradigm shift towards homeopathic solutions, particularly those derived from herbs and other natural sources. Of special interest to Jamaica is the explosion in the marijuana (or ganja) industry. Following on the lead of European countries like the Netherlands, states like Colorado in the United States have been leading the charge to brand and market the much sought after herb. Jamaica is in on the act

too. Already renowned for its ‘high grade’ quality, the government has decriminalized the possession of amounts two ounces or less, (not to be confused with legalizing the carrying and usage of the drug,) and has established the Cannabis Licensing Authority to regulate and monitor the industry and its players.
