Dear New Fighting Scot: Congratulations on your decision to attend Monmouth College this fall. The transition into your college years is a very exciting time, and I hope you have enjoyed your experience with Monmouth thus far. There are many great memories and experiences ahead for you. On behalf of the Interfraternity Council, a representative body of the four men’s fraternities at Monmouth College we invite you to apply for this scholarship. Fraternities can transform young men into future leaders of our generation. You will find fraternity members involved in all aspects of student life at Monmouth College helping to make this institution and our fraternity community stronger. As part of that involvement and investment in our campus, the Interfraternity Council will present two awards of $150 to two incoming first year students. One award will be awarded to a student who has shown profound success in academics. The second will be awarded to a man who has demonstrated himself as a leader in his co-curricular activities and service to his community. Included with this letter, you will find the application which is due August 26, 2016. We encourage you to apply for these awards—believe us, $150 dollars is a great way to decrease the cost of books. Applying for these scholarships in no way requires you to join a fraternity. We would simply like to reward incoming men who exemplify the principles of our organizations which are essential for success through life. Included in this envelope are the following:   

Fraternity and Sorority Life is a wonderful opportunity to get involved early in your college experience. Many of our members are involved in other areas of campus life through their commitment to football, golf, track and field, marching band, chorale, intercultural life, religious life, and residence life. Just because you are involved in something else, doesn’t mean you should not consider going Greek. Make the decision that is best for you! Dear Fellow Scot, First of all, I would like to congratulate you on choosing to attend Monmouth College! Monmouth is a great institution to better your education and the college will teach the necessary skills you need to succeed right now and in your future careers. This institution has helped become a better student and helped me gained the confidence to hit the ground running when I graduate next spring. Monmouth College offers plenty of opportunities to branch out and meet new people. This includes sports, your classes, and people in your major. I’ve learned first-hand that the people I have met throughout my college career, will become my lifelong friends. Another great thing this school offers is Fraternity and Sorority Life. I know that there’s this stereotype that is spreading around today’s society that all Greeks are bad or a waste of time. But I would be the first person to tell you that Monmouth’s Greek community is nowhere near these stereotypes. We are one, united community looking to better ourselves and the community. This is another excellent way of branching out and meeting more people. Currently, I’m the president of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, Epsilon Nu Chapter, on campus. This chapter will always hold a dear place in my heart. The men I’ve met through this organization will forever be my brothers. ATO has challenged me to better myself as a man and as a person. We strive to take young men, just like you, and develop them into leaders. I feel as if this fraternity has taught me the necessary skills to become a leader and a better man. The purpose of this letter is to reach out to other incoming male freshmen and extend an invitation to participate in the men’s fraternity recruitment week September 1st-9th. Along with this letter comes the schedule of our events that will take place that week. I know that freshman year, especially the beginning, is a very stressful time in your life, with managing your time and finding time for other things. I want you to know that whenever you have a question about school, Fraternity and Sorority Life or you need life advice, I will gladly help you. When you arrive on campus this fall, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, I’m sure we will see each other on campus and we can exchange numbers. I’m confident that you will enjoy the next four years here at Monmouth College, trust me, you won’t regret this decision. Have a great rest of the summer and hit the ground running when you arrive here on campus!

Dear Monmouth College Class of 2020, My name is Alejandro Calderon. I am a Monmouth College student graduating in 2017. Congratulations on your acceptance into Monmouth College, but, moreover, congratulations on choosing to attend Monmouth! You may have realized that Monmouth has a variety of opportunities to offer. These opportunities lie within the major or minor you are thinking about and within the extracurricular activities available here. Most of the extracurricular activities are run by students, for students. Getting involved in these activities allows for the opportunity to network, work on professional development, and create lifelong friendships. Soon, you will find out what types of organizations Monmouth has to offer and which one fits best with you. However, I would like to take a moment to give you some background of a community which aspires to mold each member into a leader: The Greek community. Fraternity and Sorority Life provides many opportunities to its members. Monmouth College has a total of eight Greek organizations. Four male fraternities, three female fraternities, and one co-ed fraternity, each working towards similar goals. Greek members strive to be the most involved. We have members who are Head Residents and Resident Assistants of their dorms, members who have obtained a leadership role in a campus organization, and members who go on to work for Monmouth College following graduation. Although we strive to be the most involved, we also strive to be academically superior. In fall of 2015, the Greek community earned an average GPA of 3.14, which was higher than the all-campus average-2.94. While we have high expectations for Greek members, we also make it a fun and memorable experience filled with social events with other Greek organizations, philanthropy events, community service events, and much more. I can honestly say that if I had not made the decision to join a Greek organization, I would not have made the most of my college experience. As the President of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity Monmouth College chapter, I invite you to attend each of the upcoming men’s fraternity informational meetings and recruitment events. You should be receiving letters similar to this one within the next few weeks if you have not gotten them already. You will also receive information about the successes that the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity has accomplished. A few that we have accomplished is a Head Resident for the 2016-2017 year, Orientation Leaders for the 2016-2017 year, awards from our General Headquarters, and awards from Monmouth College. When you arrive on campus you will have several opportunities to meet every Greek organization where you will a variety of great people. With this, I hope that Monmouth College Fraternity Life is something that you will consider and take advantage of. If you have any more questions regarding Fraternity and Sorority Life or Phi Delta Theta, do not hesitate to contact Billy Bernard, Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life and Student Involvement, at wbernard@monmouthcollege.edu. Any questions you have can be answered by him. I hope that you enjoy the rest of your summer, and I look forward to formally introducing myself to each and every one of you this upcoming fall!

Best,

Alejandro D. Calderon President-Phi Delta Theta-Illinois Gamma Chapter

On behalf of the men of Sigma Phi Epsilon, I congratulate you on becoming a part of the Monmouth College family. You have begun the final step in your education and are finally nearing the realm of adulthood, but first there are some things you should know about collegiate life. Although you may be here to further your education, whether to receive a degree or simply learn more about the world we live in, there is another aspect of growth that many collegiate men throw to the wayside. That is the concept of personal responsibility. While the classroom may teach you the concepts of sciences, it is the fraternity that teaches you how to be an outstanding gentleman. By offering scholarship opportunities, developmental events and courses, service and philanthropic work, the men of Sigma Phi Epsilon strive to make all of its members better men. Sigma Phi Epsilon was founded on the principles of Virtue, Diligence, and Brotherly Love in 1901 at Richmond College, now known as the University of Richmond. Today, SigEp exists on over 240 campuses, and is home to over 15,000 brothers nationwide, making the organization one of the largest fraternities in the country. Sigma Phi Epsilon is a progressive non-hazing organization, who instead utilizes both our Balanced Man Program as well as our Residential Learning Community. The men of Sigma Phi Epsilon strive to achieve a sound mind as well as sound body, balancing athletics and extracurriculars with classroom studies. The Residential Learning Community is a dedicated classroom within the SigEp facility that prepares classes on important topics ranging from historic analysis of the football helmet to proper interview attire. Not only is SigEp an exceptional social fraternity, but prides itself on its academics and always aids its members in excelling in the classroom. The men of SigEp Illinois Gamma, our local chapter, achieved an average accumulative GPA of 3.15, the highest of any men’s organization on campus. The brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon are not your typical students, but extraordinary individuals. Brother’s majors include: Communication studies, Computer science, Biopsychology, Kinesiology, Accounting, History, and many more. Sigma Phi Epsilon is not an organization that wishes to indoctrinate you, but rather one that encourages you to become the best individual you can. I was in your shoes last year as a freshman, but through hard work and dedication I became President of my chapter and continuously work day in and day out to better both the chapter and myself. It has been a truly fantastic experience for me, and I assure you that it can be for you as well. Not only has this organization introduced me to fantastic friends and experiences, but has also prepared me for life beyond college. I encourage you to research what Fraternity and Sorority Life at Monmouth College has to offer. If you have any questions regarding Fraternity Life, or our chapter specifically, please feel free to contact me. Fraternally,

Jack Gilmore Godlewski jgodlewski@monmouthcollege.edu 630-945-7467

Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity

Delta Lambda Chapter

“Powerhouse of Excellence” Greetings New Fighting Scot, I am the President of Zeta Beta Tau’s Delta Lambda Chapter at Monmouth College, and I wish to tell you a little about our fraternity. Zeta Beta Tau began as a youth organization in New York City in 1898 for young Jewish men from the city’s colleges. This ultimately became Zeta Beta Tau, the first Jewish Greek letter college fraternity. By 1954 ZBT abolished racial or religious requirements for membership, and in 1989 following efforts to end hazing, ZBT also abolished pledging: meaning that upon initiation you are granted full membership. As an organization, we seek to foster and develop a brotherhood which lasts for a lifetime which is open to men of good character; believing that being a Zebe (the nickname for members of ZBT) and a Gentlemen is synonymous. We believe in four core tenets: Intellectual Awareness, Social Responsibility, Integrity, and Brotherly Love. It is through this that we prepare our brothers for positions of leadership and service in their communities. Part of this preparation is philanthropic work, which is why ZBT has partnered with Children’s Miracle Network. Our chapter has a unique history here at Monmouth College. We began as a local fraternity named Phi Epsilon Phi in 1968, before eventually joining Phi Epsilon Pi, which in turn joined Zeta Beta Tau. As a chapter, we have fostered our own unique and diverse culture. We have embraced an unofficial motto, “embrace the weird”. We are a chapter of scholars, musicians, and athletes, among many other groups. We all come from a diverse range of familial, economic, and ethnic backgrounds. We have also forged our own philanthropic endeavors outside of our commitments to Children’s Miracle Network, such as our annual Pancake Dinner which benefits the American Cancer Society, and efforts to assist members of the Monmouth, Illinois community. Enclosed with this letter is a copy of our Fall Recruitment schedule, and we, the brothers of Zeta Beta Tau at Monmouth College, would be honored and delighted to meet you during our events. Sincerely, Thomas McCoy President, Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity – Delta Lambda Chapter
