“As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew.” ‑ABRAHAM LINCOLN ANNUAL MESSAGE TO CONGRESS DECEMBER 1, 1862

Our world is changing – fast. To keep pace requires new ways of thinking, new ways of acting. At Monmouth College, we’re preparing students to succeed in this ever-evolving future. We’re teaching them to think more deeply, more creatively.

65

%

ACCORDING TO THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR, 65 PERCENT OF THE JOBS STUDENTS WILL FILL IN THE FUTURE DO NOT YET EXIST.

We’re engaging them to be more collaborative – in the classroom, in research, in internships, and in leadership. Employing innovative instruction and the most advanced facilities, we’re preparing graduates who will be able to learn, adapt, and thrive, no matter what the future holds. They will think anew. They will act anew. They will lead in a new, dynamic world.

Let us bring out the thinker, scholar, joiner, leader, believer, adventurer, competitor, and achiever in you.

#THINKANEWACTANEW extracurricular? w h at e x t r ac u r r i c u l a r ? Whether in a classroom, on a stage, in a pool, on a playing field, as part of an organization, or inside a residence hall, a Monmouth education, in all its many facets, is one continuous program of student development. Nothing is “extracurricular” or outside or extraneous. It is all part of a very conscious, very concrete process of learning.

This is a whole education – all about you. More intentional, more purposeful, our developmental process at Monmouth starts with a simple question: What are you interested in? Once we help you identify your passions and goals, we then outline options, and a plan, to help you achieve them. We’ll explore the right mix of a major, minor, research opportunity, campus leadership position, professional internship, myriad mentors

Every college student needs a mentor to help guide them. At Monmouth, you’ll have not one mentor but many, from all areas of your campus experience, helping to guide and encourage you toward the accomplishment of your many goals.

service, student ministry, parttime employment, and more. Classroom knowledge is just one part of a Monmouth education. This is an education that goes further. And as a result, you will, too.

A FAVORABLE STUDENT-TOFACULTY RATIO TRANSLATES TO A VERY HIGH LEVEL OF PERSONAL ATTENTION AND MENTORING.

Needed: confident leaders, critical thinkers, creative problem solvers, strategic collaborators, active citizens, and men and women of character. #THINKANEWACTANEW

i n n o v at i v e l e a r n i n g Ours is a uniquely collaborative academic experience, distinguished by a multidisciplinary approach, experiential learning, and using the power of the liberal arts to address issues of social importance.

Today, the 12th most used function on a cell phone is talking. Technology, communications, globalization – our world is a very different place than it used to be. It’s why you need an education that will not just fill you with facts (because many of those facts may not be relevant tomorrow),

35 MONMOUTH OFFERS 35 MAJORS, 30 MINORS, & 16 PRE-PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS.

but rather an education that goes deeper. At Monmouth, you’ll be exposed to many ideas and perspectives. You’ll take classes in several different disciplines. You’ll become adept in your major, but you’ll also acquire a broad knowledge and practical skills that will serve you now, and for the rest of your career – no matter what the future brings. This is the liberal arts.

i n t e g r at e d s t u d i e s Our Integrated Studies program offers a sequence of topical, interdisciplinary courses that prepare students to be critical thinkers and strong communicators. The program includes four courses that build upon one another over four years: 1. Introduction to Liberal Arts A course to help students become adept at reading, writing, and analyzing, as well as seeing the connection between disciplines. 2. Global Perspectives Students investigate other communities, political systems, and cultures.

3. Reflections Students look inward at personal values, ethics, and purpose in life. 4. Citizenship A capstone course that challenges students to move past study and take conscientious action through service projects and internships.

exceptional f ac u lt y Monmouth faculty bring degrees from prestigious schools such as Brown, Cornell, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Princeton, Stanford, University of Chicago, Yale, and more.

on fire for history Our innovative history curriculum is “history from the documents up.” First-year students, instead of studying a general book about “Western Civilization,” use primary sources to research a fascinating historical period or incident, such as “The Great Chicago Fire of 1871.”

triad program Monmouth’s innovative Triad program brings together three faculty members representing separate disciplines to collaborate on teaching and thinking about an important interdisciplinary issue, such as world hunger.

science + business Monmouth’s new $42 million Center for Science and Business is inspiring fresh ideas for integrating the teaching of these two traditionally separate disciplines.

ready your passport

This is a deep, broad, innovative, integrated, adaptable, collaborative, 21st-century preparation.

We’re opening the world to our students. Each new Monmouth student will receive assistance in securing a U.S. passport, and we’ll pay the application fee.

Our world is increasingly complex and interconnected. Today’s challenges, whether within an organization or worldwide, call for ideas from various disciplines working together. Monmouth has been a pioneer in the development of an integrated education. When you graduate from Monmouth, you’ll have an awareness of many academic areas and how they connect. You’ll have an integrated perspective. You’ll be ready for an integrated world.

professional internships Abbott Labs. BMW. Capitol Hill. Caterpillar. Disney World. MTV. Sony Records. United Way. Internships bring a practical perspective and invaluable experience. You’ll work alongside practitioners in your field in a realworld work environment, building knowledge and skills – as well as your resume.

Sure, you can read about things. But wouldn’t you rather do them? Hands-on learning brings true understanding. It’s why more than three-quarters of our most recent graduating class participated in internships. It’s why our undergraduates conduct highlevel research, an opportunity usually reserved for graduate students at other institutions. u n d e r g r a d u at e research Monmouth students across all majors can participate in high-level research. In fact, our students can begin research in the summer before their freshmen year, as part of our innovative Summer Opportunities for Intellectual Activity (SOf IA) program.

It’s why you’ll find our students studying, researching, and serving in every corner of the world. There’s just something about being in an NBC newsroom, or on an expedition to the Galapagos Islands, or standing atop Machu Picchu in Peru. Monmouth

WE’RE A SMALL COLLEGE, BUT WE OFFER MORE THAN 120 STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS, PLUS AN ACTIVE GREEK LIFE WITH EIGHT NATIONAL FRATERNITIES & SORORITIES.

You no doubt have many interests. Choose a college where you can get involved and pursue them all. Monmouth is a smaller college, but we offer opportunities that are more typical of a large university – with one big difference. Here, you’re not competing with tens of thousands of other students to participate. At Monmouth, you can join not just one student club, but many. You can compete on multiple intramural teams. You can join a fraternity or sorority. You can be a Resident Assistant. You can have a part in a play. You can be a student government leader. You can play oboe in the marching band. You can do any of these things – or, you can do them all!

a place to belong, a place to lead With so many opportunities, you’ll get involved at Monmouth – everyone does. As a result, you’ll easily meet other students, make close friends, and feel part of a genuine, close community. And Monmouth is the perfect place to explore and enhance your leadership abilities.

Come tackle, swing, dribble, pass, serve, attack, shoot, spike – – become a Fighting Scot!

Ours is a proud athletic tradition. Competing at the NCAA Division III level as a member of the Midwest Conference, Monmouth offers 24 varsity sports, more than most NCAA institutions. We are one of only a handful of small colleges to offer varsity water polo to men and women. Our track and field program is perennially one of the top Division III programs in the country. With approximately 30 percent of the student body participating in at least one varsity sport, athletics are an important part of Monmouth life. Go Fighting Scots!

championship facilities Monmouth offers outstanding athletic facilities, far surpassing most athletic facilities in the Midwest. Since 2000, seven venues have been newly constructed or renovated – including our $22 million Huff Athletic Center, known as “The Huff,” a sensational sports, recreation, and fitness center.

Where does all this intentional development lead? To success. For the third consecutive year, 99 percent of Monmouth graduates were either employed or in graduate school within six months. Monmouth graduates are in demand because of their ability to think, communicate, and lead. Knowledgeable and experienced, prepared and confident, they are ready to hit the ground running, starting day one.

wa c k e r l e c a r e e r & leadership center Our innovative Wackerle Career & Leadership Center was the first career center in the nation to combine career advising with campus leadership. It makes sense. Companies and graduate schools look for a strong academic record, but also participation, leadership, and service. Our Center is able to guide students toward meaningful activities, helping them to build an impressive resume and a sure path to success.
