Art Scholarship

Latin Scholarship

The college provides excellent and varied facilities for budding young artists, including one of the few foundries where molten metals can be sculpted into objets d’art of lasting value. REQUIREMENTS:  Prepare the following for an on-campus audition:

• A portfolio or digital presentation showing 15 to 20 pieces of your best work. The portfolio can include paintings, drawings, photographs, 3-dimensional works, or photographs of larger works, and should be presented in the most professional way possible.

Monmouth boasts one of the most active classics departments in the nation. In addition to serving as headquarters for the Classical Society of the Middle West and South, the department sponsors a national writing contest, an annual lecture series and regular archaeological programming. Majors are available in Classics, Latin and Greek. Recipients are expected to demonstrate some competence in comprehending and translating Latin with the aid of a dictionary. The scholarship is renewable up to three years if the student successfully completes a half credit hour of Latin per semester. REQUIREMENTS:  Prepare the following for an on-campus interview:

• Letter of recommendation from your Latin teacher, to be submitted prior to or during the interview.

Speech and Debate Scholarship Monmouth has a long tradition of excellence in speech and debate, with an active forensics society, ScotSpeak, competing regularly at regional tournaments.

• A short passage (c. 30 to 50 lines) in Latin prose or poetry to discuss with Monmouth College faculty and students during the interview.

 To be considered for this award, you must: • Have a GPA of at least a 3.0

• Submit a résumé outlining forensic background and an essay on why you would like to be considered for this scholarship.

 Prepare the following for an on-campus interview:

• A selection of your favorite high school speech or debate between five to seven minutes in length.

Dating to the 1940s, the Monmouth College Pipe Band is rapidly developing a national reputation, based on recent top finishes in major competitions. Each year, Monmouth’s pipers and drummers perform at nearly 35 events, both on and off campus. Scholarships for full or partial tuition may be awarded to pipers and drummers, based on their experience and ability. Continuing participation in the Pipe Band is required to retain a scholarship.

Presbyterian Scholarship Presbyterian Scholarships are for incoming students interested in connecting their Presbyterian faith to an education at Monmouth College. The scholarships are for up to $21,000 and are renewable annually. In order to renew the scholarship, students must be in good academic standing and have actively participated in the Presbyterian Scholars Program. Designed to nurture Presbyterian students into church leaders for the 21st century, the program offers such opportunities as spiritual retreats, national church conferences, and the chance to meet prominent religious leaders. Presbyterian Scholars also have the opportunity to live in the new Presbyterian House, which is a hub for religious life programs on campus. requirements:  Meet with the college chaplain in person or by phone, if you are located outside

of Illinois or eastern Iowa.

 Request a letter of recommendation (on church letterhead) from a Presbyterian

or Church of Scotland pastor, to be submitted prior to or during the interview.

Sustainability Scholarship With an educational garden and adjoining theme house, a six-acre research farm and partnerships with local schools and organizations, the Sustainability Program is one of Monmouth’s fastest-growing new initiatives. Sustainability Scholarships are offered to incoming students interested in alternative agriculture, sustainability and environmental issues. In order to renew the scholarship, students must be in good academic standing and actively participate in the sustainability program. requirements:

Midwest Scholars Award

Performance Theatre Scholarship

Monmouth College attracts extraordinary students with its rigorous academic program that includes exceptional resources such as the publishing of three national peer-reviewed journals at the college. In order to maintain its high standards, the Midwest Scholars Award recognizes first-time freshman students from across the nation who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and leadership in their schools and communities. Midwest Scholars will be recognized inside and outside the classroom as leaders of their class. They will be offered opportunities to participate in the Honors Program, research with faculty, special internships and community service projects.

Since 60 of its students formed the Crimson Masque theatrical organization in 1925, Monmouth College has developed a distinguished tradition in the dramatic arts. A member of Alpha Psi Omega national theatre honorary, Monmouth offers opportunities for broad participation in a wide range of productions, from serious drama to experimental and musical theatre.

Students named Midwest Scholars will be invited to campus to interview for one of the following:

REQUIREMENTS:  Request a letter of reference from your high school drama director, to be

submitted prior to or during the audition.

• Résumé • Two contrasting monologues from three to seven minutes in total length

• Trustees’ Scholarship (Full-tuition for all four years; two awarded.) • President’s Scholarship ($25,000 per year for four years totaling $100,000; three awarded.)

• Academic Merit Scholarship (Midwest Scholars not receiving a Trustees’ or DETAILS ABOUT SCHOLARSHIPS

• The student must be accepted for admission prior to requesting an interview for a scholarship (with the exception of the Presbyterian Scholarship). • All scholarships described in this brochure are renewable annually. Some may require ongoing participation in a particular departmental activity or, in a few cases, maintaining a certain academic achievement level. • Majoring in any particular discipline is not a requirement for scholarships listed in this brochure. • All scholarships normally require an in-person interview on campus. Exceptions may be granted for students who reside outside of Illinois or eastern Iowa. • While students may compete for more than one scholarship, there are limits on total scholarship funding across more than one source. • More information about these merit-based scholarships, as well as need-based scholarships (not covered in this brochure) is available from a Monmouth College representative or online at www.monmouthcollege.edu/scholarships • The application deadline for the Midwest Scholars Award is January 1, 2014. For all other scholarships the deadline is January 13, 2014.

These scholarships are renewable annually, as long as recipients maintain a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA. The deadline for consideration is January 1, 2014. ELIGIBILIT Y:  Midwest Scholars Award applicants must have:

• A cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.7 on a 4.0 scale or

• An ACT composite of at least a 25 or an SAT of 1140 (Critical Reading and Math only)

Instrumental Music Scholarship With some of the best acoustics anywhere, the Kasch Performance Hall provides the perfect setting for instrumental music. REQUIREMENTS:  Prepare the following for an on-campus audition:

• Two contrasting pieces, or two contrasting movements of one piece. The solo can be one extended movement if contrasts in style and mood are apparent.

• Scales and possible sight-reading • Strings: Two to three octave majors chosen from C, G, D, A, and F • Wind and Percussion: Two to three octave majors chosen from C, G, D, A, F, B  b, and E  b

• Activities résumé • An essay of 500 words or less, responding to the following prompt: If you were given a million dollars to spend, how would you spend it? or A college admission essay of your choice.  Send your résumé and essay via e-mail to Midwest.scholars@monmouthcollege.edu.

Be sure to include your full name and date of birth in your e-mail.

NOTE: Midwest Scholars will be notified in mid-January by the Office of Admissions. Campus interviews will take place on February 1, 2014. An interview is required in order to be considered for the scholarships listed above.

Vocal Music Scholarship Monmouth’s vocal music program recently participated in a recital at New York City’s Carnegie Hall, one of the finest performance venues in the nation. REQUIREMENTS:  Prepare one memorized piece for an on-campus audition. Note: Popular music and musical theatre repertoire are not considered appropriate audition pieces for this scholarship.

Technical Theatre Scholarship Using the latest in digital lighting and sound equipment and computerized design software, Monmouth offers a technical theatre experience reflective of current industry practices. A new black-box theatre facility in downtown Monmouth provides exciting opportunities for experimentation in creative stagecraft techniques. REQUIREMENTS:  Request a letter of reference from your high school drama director, to be

submitted prior to or during the audition.
