radled in the hills of the North Tustin neighborhood in southern California, this coastal, modern farmhouse is the epitome of relaxed and refined living. Designed by Aly Morford and Leigh Lincoln, co-founders of Pure Salt Interiors, this home maximizes its open layout for an easy flow from the porch to the backyard, perfect for entertaining and casual living. Home to a family of six, the designs mix plenty of practical solutions within beautiful styling to create a cozy and chic atmosphere. Upon entering, guests are greeted by the statement entry wall as the space opens up into a large great room with vaulted ceilings and wall of windows, making the heart of the home feel breezy and drenched in natural light. Also found here are the family room, dining room, kitchen and bar, all leading to the backyard with sliding doors that really allow this space to open up into a true indoor/outdoor experience.

The main suite is the most serene retreat and nothing short of pure relaxation for Aly and Leigh. The plush bed is the perfect mix of masculine and feminine, with its cool-toned headboard and its light and pretty linens. “We love designing down to the details to ensure that a space feels comfortable and reflective of the people who will live in it—and for a couple, that usually means balancing two sets of tastes, which can be challenging,” says Leigh Lincoln. To make sure they are pleasing both parties, Aly and Leigh rely on classic pieces and neutral color palettes, and with their eponymous Shoppe, they are able to not only fully design this home, but also furnish it, making each space feel custom and curated. Here, the Jackson Duvet and Darius Nightstand, and Regan Rug are a few stand out pieces from the Pure Salt Shoppe that make this space feel elegant and cozy. The ensuite is the definition of luxury with its dual vanities and deep free-standing tub along one wall, and a beautifully tiled shower on the other. The honey wood linen cabinet and shelves mixes so well with the white vanities, bringing dimension to the space that makes it feel all the larger and brighter. MODERN TEXAS LIVING | 13

AT HOME

Off the garage there is a cute mudroom and fully equipped laundry. Outfitted with a comfy bench seat and shelving, the mudroom has plenty of storage for coats, bags, and shoes, and the seamless transition into the laundry room allows for easy clean up when coming into the home. The pops of blue from the upholstery to the fun tile tie these two spaces together to create a cool and coheseive look. 14 | moderntexasliving.com

With four kids in the mix (two boys and two girls) it was a priority to design a unique space for each child. And with the birth of their new baby and launch of kids brand Little Salt earlier this year, Pure Salt has an abundance of beautiful and playful kids furnishings to round out their Shoppe. This is the oldest boy’s room—complete with an L shaped desk for storage and utility, the space looks stylish and mature, while still feeling youthful with beach themed art and decor (like the deeply saturated Valencia pillow and catchy “Work Hard” print.) “Investing in foundational pieces, like beds, dressers, and desks, give a kid’s room a solid base, where you can then layer unique linens and fun decor to suit their interests and easily swap it out as they age,” advises Aly Morford.

MODERN TEXAS LIVING | 19

Pictured here is the second boy’s room and the eldest girl’s room. Both spark a sense of fun and offer a peek into the likes and style of each child. The boy being a quintessential cool guy with his surf prints and “rock on” decor, and the girl putting a twist on the classic princess aesthetic with her muted colors and joyful art choices. And with an extensive collection of gorgeous pillows on the Shoppe, it's easy to mix and match patterns, like the Tarah and the Lily, to change up the looks on a whim.

Last, is the nursery. Chock-full of the cutest Little Salt goodies, from the mini bamboo chairs, to the prettiest pink tie-dye swaddles, this room is home to the youngest daughter, who is quickly growing from her toddler bed into her big girl space. “We’ve been working with this family for years as they’ve built this home, so it is bittersweet to see this project come to an end,” Says Leigh. “But it is so rewarding to see this family grow into their home and love it more and more each day,” adds Aly. That is the essence of Pure Salt’s design philosophy: to create spaces where life happens, and when the spaces are beautiful, chances are the memories will be too. MODERN TEXAS LIVING | 23

Two Baylor Professors Discover Groundbreaking Science of COLOR By Chloe Caballero

Baylor University researchers unveiled a new color imaging Thursday with the capacity to dramatically increase the range of color a digital screen can display. from its name: 6P’s name is derived from the system’s original expansion from three color primaries to six, with the addition of cyan, magenta and yellow. While the system has grown in scope since those early iterations, the name signals that color display is no longer limited to RGB. Carbonara, Korpi and their team have pushed the boundaries on previous understandings of a multiprimary display specifically for electronic mediums. The system – called 6P – has implications for television and cinema storytelling by transcending long-used color systems that compress color and limit it to fit the capacity of most screens. Baylor researchers Corey Carbonara, Ph.D., and Michael Korpi, Ph.D., professors of film and digital media, lead a team of researchers and industry professionals developing the new system. They describe 6P as the “world’s first retro-compatible multi-primary color capture, processing, distribution, and display system”. Some understanding of its importance can be found

What makes the system so revolutionary is that it uses technology and color science to challenge traditional RGB limitations specifically regarding electronic formats. This achievement will allow for enhanced storytelling where color is critical in translating and processing visual narration. External organizations such as SMPTE and NASA have found value in 6P for example, though its impact will affect other major areas of interest such as cinematography, video games, and similar visual storytellers.

Chicken Burrito Bowls INGREDIENTS For the rice: • Cilantro Lime Rice For the chicken and peppers: • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts or tenders • 2 tablespoons taco seasoning • 3 tablespoons white flour (use gluten-free flour as needed) • 1-2 tablespoons olive or avocado oil • 2 large bell peppers, cut into strips (any color) For the dressing: • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice (about 1 lime) • 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro • 1 clove garlic, minced • 1/2 teaspoon maple syrup • 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper For the burrito bowls: • 5 cups romaine lettuce leaves, washed and dried • 1 can corn, drained and rinsed • 1 can black beans, drained and rinsed • 1/2 red onion, chopped • 1 avocado peeled, seeded and sliced • Optional toppings: guacamole, pico de gallo, low-fat sour cream, salsa, fresh cilantro • Salt and Pepper to taste

By Kim Lee @Kimscravings Photo by Molly Meehan servings: 6 BURRITO BOWLS prep time: 15 MINS cook time: 15 MINS total time: 30 MINS

INSTRUCTIONS For the rice: Start the rice cooking first, as it will take the longest. Use my Cilantro Lime Rice recipe or another favorite rice.

For the chicken and peppers: 1. If you are not using raw chicken tenders, ground chicken breasts to even, thin pieces or slice large breasts evenly in 2 halves. Salt and pepper the chicken pieces. In a bowl, stir together the taco seasoning and white flour. Generously dredge each piece of the chicken breasts in this mixture. 2. Warm a large, non-stick skillet with oil to medium high heat. Once the oil is heated, add the chicken to a single layer in the skillet. Cook for 3 minutes on one side and then flip to the other side and cook for another 4-6 minutes or until chicken is cooked through. Set aside to allow to cool. 3. Add the peppers to the same heated skillet (no need to wash skillet and drizzle with a little extra oil only if needed), and cook until soft and slightly charred. Season with salt and pepper. For the dressing: In a small bowl, large glass measuring cup or jar, add dressing ingredients and whisk to combine. Assembly: 1. Chop or slice the cooked and cooled chicken. 2. Coarsely chop the lettuce into small pieces. 3. Place lettuce on the bottom of 4 bowls. Divide the rice, chicken, peppers, corn, black beans, onion and avocado evenly among the bowls. 4. Top each bowl with toppings of your choice and, if using, drizzle dressing evenly over the bowls. Recipe adapted from Cafe Delights

ASK THE EXPERTS

Healthcare

1 Are you seeing any increases in other viruses or flu cases this summer? We are seeing increases in influenza and common cold viruses this summer. These summer colds often cause fever, mild cough, congestion, sore throat, headache, muscle aches and gastrointestinal issues like nausea or vomiting.

2

Is there a way to tell the difference between allergies and other viruses? The biggest difference between a viral infection and seasonal allergies is fever. Fever over 101 degrees is an indicator that more than an allergy is present. Other, more significant, issues such as body aches, shortness of breath, vomiting and diarrhea may also indicate viral or other infection versus allergies.

What questions should I be asking the doctor at my child’s physical? It’s a good idea to have a few questions ready prior to your regular appointments, both for you and your child. It’s best to familiarize yourself with what regular visits may consist of based on the age of your child as these appointments change accordingly. Questions about developmental milestones, vaccinations, diet, exercise, and even social stressors can help guide both you and your physician in their care.

How long am I contagious after having a cold or the flu? Influenza and colds are generally spread through the air, by close contact, or contaminated surfaces. The flu can be contagious for about 1 day before symptoms start and can last as long as 5-7 days from when you first start feeling the symptoms. In general, a cold can be contagious 1-2 days before your symptoms start (which is why washing hands is so important!), and you could be contagious for as long as your symptoms are present. If you are still having fever or symptoms, it’s a good bet you are still contagious.

5 Which injuries do you see most often with children? In the summer we tend to see more injuries related to being active outside. We frequently see sprains and strains, bumps and bruises, and scrapes and cuts. More uncommonly, we take care of head injuries from sports and accidents. It’s a good reminder to wear helmets and other safety equipment even when it’s hot and drink plenty of water.

rom one generation to the next, in every country and culture, people come together around food boards and platters. Why? Because home is the place where memories are made. At the family table, values are shaped, bodies are nourished, love is demonstrated, and, yes, it’s where our senses etch all of those cherished moments in our minds forever. If you look back, that was likely true for you. It’s certainly been true for me. My mother loved to entertain and showed her love by feeding people—her family especially. For Mom, even simple meals were small celebrations, always made with love. It was a love she passed on to me and I started cooking at a young age. Later, as a wife and mom to three little ones, my skills expanded. So did my ability to stretch meals. Leftovers were golden, and I got savvy about using up everything in the fridge. I also realized the value of family meals. Our family was busy, just like yours. Mealtime gave us a chance to connect. Gathering at the table brings families together and keeps them close. The same principles apply to friends, the ones who are so dear that they feel like family. Like my mom, feeding both family and friends is one of the ways I show love. I would never have imagined her legacy would lead me to start my blog, Reluctant Entertainer, dedicated to making hospitality a household word and encouraging people to feast on life. And I certainly never imagined how incorporating boards into my culinary repertoire would help so many people discover a fun, easy, appealing way to entertain friends, and feed families. Four years ago, twelve of my friends came to my small, mountain home for a girlfriends' weekend. I wanted our first night together to be extra special, so I decided to celebrate with a big charcuterie. We squeezed together on the back deck overlooking the trees to drink wine and feast on the biggest, most beautiful charcuterie you’ve ever laid eyes on! We nibbled on tortellini skewers, savory slices of salami, a rich, creamy assortment of cheese, and fresh bruschetta. Such a gorgeous spread! My friends took a picture of me holding that beautiful board and shared it online. Before I knew it, “The Big Board” became a phenomenon. Since then, The Big Board has been used over and over, for every kind of meal and occasion to celebrate food and people. I’ve shared recipe after recipe on my blog, inspiring others to join in the experience. ~SANDY COUGHLIN, Author @reluctantentertainer

INSIDE BUSINESS

Corey McEntyre Owner & culinary chef for Milo All Day

Milo All Day has been one of the hotspots of Waco since it’s initial brick and mortar opening in 2018, with a menu featuring unique, globally-influenced, upscale cuisine. The culinary mastermind behind it all, Corey McEntyre, provided insight on his inspirations and aspirations for one of the most innovative restaurants in Waco.

Milo All Day initially started out in Waco as a food truck, venturing from the Downtown Farmer’s Market to the Silos, eventually making the leap to the current location on 11th and Franklin. The transition from food truck to full blown restaurant was anything but easy. “There was a moment of okay, now let's put on our leather jackets and turn up our rock n roll. Sometimes, we missed really hard, and put the pedal to the metal too fast.” Those moments of hardship, according to McEntyre, have allowed for Milo to grow into itself, and for him to grow into himself as a chef. McEntyre prides himself on constantly pushing himself to step out of his own comfort zone, going from a Nashville trained chef to pouring his heart and soul into cuisine he never thought of trying. “Milo is unique in the way that we are not just specialized in one thing. We have fancy southern food, but also a lot of it is listening to the wind and seeing which way it takes you. It doesn't matter what that is, if I find something fresh, I want to try and take it on.”

Honey Coupons

One of McEntyre’s favorite dishes? An accidental Duck Confit Tostada. “I had a piece of duck that was overcooked, and I thought, ‘what can I do with this?’ I continued cooking the duck breast until I could fully shred it, a technique that I didn’t even know would work. From there, I’ve always loved tinga, so I used shredded duck and turned it into tinga de pato. I put it on a tostada with some crema and shredded lettuce, and just kind of stepped back and said ‘well, that happened, let’s see if I can make it better’. I kept workshopping it, using different parts of the duck and making it into a tostada. I chose one day to serve it to a regular and they absolutely loved it. It might end up on the menu here soon, and everyone needs to try it.” McEntyre’s ingenuity and passion is something that has started to really set him apart in the Waco food scene. If you are ever looking for a place to go for something you never thought to try, visit Milo All Day and Chef Corey McEntyre to reach out and expand your taste buds.

NOT READY TO GO UNDER THE KNIFE... by Rhonda Schaeper, Accomplished Medical Injector

I always get questions like, “All my friends started years ago, what does the process look like, is it even worth it at this point…” My response is always, yes! We are able to do many things to help, but the process, as well as results, will all be up to you. As a long-term medical injector, I have seen the difference that facial cosmetic surgery can make not just physically, but also to people’s confidence. While cosmetic injectables and skin services can seem intimidating, experts will educate you and help you feel at ease by answering any questions you may have. Medical aesthetics have come a long way. While full correction may not be able to be achieved, we are able to get significant results to help your best features shine while giving you a younger appearance. My recommendation is to first book a consultation with us to discuss what we can do for you. We will discuss all the options available as well as the commitment and investment involved.

WRITE A LIST I personally recommend starting with the area of your face or body that you feel deserves the most attention. Coming into an appointment with a list of areas that bother you specifically will allow the doctor to discuss possible solutions. We offer skin care as well as medical-grade procedures that treat the skin itself for hyperpigmentation, acne, scarring as well as texture.

SKIN CONSULTATION I highly recommend meeting with Bella, our esthetician, when it comes to the skin. I personally book my appointments with her and trust her guidance. Keep in mind, we do this on a daily basis and know what works so if you ask us what would be best for your particular skin, we will be able to asses it properly during the consultation and advise you on what we feel the next steps should be.

QUICK TIP Want a fresh face while looking less tired? Ask us about Botox & Dysport.

Already do Botox but looking for something a little more? You may be ready for filler, which will help address some of the lower face concerns. My personal favorite is cheek filler and threads combination.

IT'S A PERSONAL JOURNEY The important thing to remember is it’s your journey and you decide. If you’re not sure where to start and the idea of surgery is not for you right now, give us a call and see what we can do. Our consults are complimentary and there’s no pressure or obligation. If you’ve been curious about the process of facial cosmetic surgery and you'd like to know more or what we could do for you, call and we would love to have you!

Staw THE MONOGRAM

TOTE

1 3

Purchase a plain straw clutch or tote. We found ours at walmart.com

2

Using painters tape, tape off the bottom and top areas to paint.

It’s time to paint. Be sure to stick newspaper between the layers of the tote so the paint doesn’t seep through.

4

Let it completely dry and then you can add your monogram stencil. Not crafty? Don’t get discouraged, you can purchase a stencil to do this project. If you’re crafty, use a Word document and create your monogram using the block letter feature (to save ink) and Times New Roman font. After I printed out the monogram, I just used small scissors to cut the monogram inverted creating a simple stencil from regular printer paper.

5

To paint, place the paper stencil in the blank area between the painted lines and blot the paint brush over the paper onto the tote. MODERN TEXAS LIVING | 73

Q & A Known for her vibrant and energetic prints,

designer Sheridan French also exudes undeniable fun and effortless chicness. From designing clothes with her mom as a teen to working in London at the Prada Press Office, French is now bringing luxury to your closet. Get to know French and her inspirations, story, and fashion philosophy.

Words by Sheridan Smith Editing by Chloe Caballero Photos by Candid Chic Photography 74 | moderntexasliving.com

Q: Tell us about yourself. A: Proud mother of four will always be my first identifier. I find so much joy in being a mother. My kids come first, always, business second! I was born and raised in Fort Worth and stayed there through high school, but decided to venture overseas to Europe for college, attending the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. What an experience. I savored every single moment. I began working in London during the summers for the Prada Press Office and fell in love with the city — still my favorite in the entire world. I dream about being able to move back someday.

Q: Where do you find inspiration for your famous vibrant prints? A: Anywhere and everywhere. Cliche, but true. I was at Whole Foods earlier this week and took a photo of the tile backsplash on their smoothie bar. My son recently sent me a photo of a beetle in the backyard with the most beautiful colors that I saved in my “Inspiration” file. I am never guided by current trends or what fashion magazines are dictating to be in style; if something catches my eye and is appealing, I run with it.

Q: What style tip do you live by that you can recommend to readers? A: BE YOURSELF. And enjoy the path to discovering who you are, and what style reflects that. Trends come and go, and if a woman wears something that is not reflective of who she is at her core, she won’t feel comfortable, confident or beautiful. It can take a while and a lot of stumbling to figure out what best suits you as far as dress style, colors, vibe, but it is a fun and worthwhile journey. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and try new things out. I would wear belts as long necklaces when I was 2 years old, and that’s the spirit I still try to approach style with. Have fun, and be fearless!

Q:

How would you describe the process of designing your latest collection? A: I always begin with the print designs. Everything is dictated based on those. I have to know what prints, scale, colors are going to be used in order to design the body styles most appropriate for them. The process of selecting the specific prints and colorways for the body styles is time consuming but always fun to get to. The narrowing down aspect of the editing process is HARD! I would do every dress in 30 colors if I could. Embellishments are selected last, just like icing on a cake.

Q:

What aspect of your business/brand are you most proud of? A: Business wise, I am proud of the blood, sweat and tears that have gone into it. Entrepreneurship is a labor of love, regardless of the industry. It is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. My brain is never away from work. Grocery store, I’m thinking about colors. Carpool line, what if I did this for a dress detail. Cooking dinner, what market segment is best to expand into next. I started my company the day before I found out I was pregnant with my second, my first was 9 months old, and it has been nothing but a nonstop game of juggle since then. I am proud to have learned how to navigate the demands of the business as a full-time working mom. As far as the brand goes, it is tough to build a brand from scratch and have any type of recognition given how the landscape of social media has changed, as well as facing industry giants like Tory Burch, Lilly Pulitzer, DVF. Consistency is key, though, and I have aimed to do just that with the quality we offer, the prints we create, and the styles we design, so that our customers know exactly what to expect every season: A fusion of vibrant, exceptional prints on classic, wearable pieces that are undeniably fun, effortlessly chic, and made with their lifestyle in mind.

Q: If you had to describe your brand in one word, what would it be? A: Wearable luxury. I tried for one word. Really hard. Couldn’t do it.

That’s all I want, really, for

every woman to feel confident

just as they are, being no one

but themselves, and smile about

it, peacefully and proudly.

Q: What or who is your style inspiration? A: Honestly, I don’t have one particular or even a few women that I regularly look to as a muse or for inspiration. Every woman I see can inspire me in a different way. I think of her life, the challenges she is facing, the duties she has to tackle that day as a mother, wife, business owner, friend, sister, anything, and my heart is to have her, and every woman, feel great and gorgeous no matter what they are weathering. It makes a tremendous difference to either wake up and put on black leggings and a t-shirt, or a vibrant, bright, beautiful dress or blouse, just as comfortable, but helps you glow from the inside out. Puts a little spring in their step. That’s all I want, really, for every woman to feel confident just as they are, being no one but themselves, and smile about it, peacefully and proudly.

Q: What is one piece of your collection you think everyone should have in their closet? A: The Kelly. Without question. It is our signature piece, and our best-seller, three years running since we introduced her, without any hint of slowing down. The dress is breathtaking, incredibly flattering on any body shape (our current size range offering goes from XS, which fits 0-2, to XL which fits 16-20), and versatile enough for a lunch with friends or a wedding. She’s a showstopper, for sure. I personally have about a dozen on regular rotation.

Q:

Do you already have a vision or ideas for your next collection? A: I always have a vision! For our next collection, fall linesheets are being sent to retailers as we speak (please contact our Director of Sales, April, to carry our line wholesale@sheridanfrench.com). I am wrapping up Resort 2021 as well, and then submitting Spring/ Summer 2022 prints and sample styles within a week or so. I keep an Inspiration album on my phone that I am continually adding to, and already have images and ideas ready to go for development of Fall 2022, Resort 2022, as well as areas we will be expanding into soon: children’s pajamas (they’ll be the cutest, comfiest out there, mark my words), textiles, home goods, gifts and much more.

Q: What led you to creating your business? A: I have always been very creative and started

designing clothes with my mother and grandmother in lower school. I created my first ballgown with both of them for a friend’s Bat-mitzvah when I was 12, and had t-shirts I embellished with different fabrics, words, snaps, things like that — very early 90s vibe — in a local boutique when I was 13. I continued designing, and at 19 years old, my first official collection was shown in the St. Andrews student run fashion show. I never knew when or how I would officially start a business, but the bug was there, and when I had the opportunity to create my first samples I ran with it and never looked back. To keep up with Sheridan, follow her @sheridanfrench. MODERN TEXAS LIVING | 77

Kim Mulkey's Hall of Fame Induction BEHIND-THE-SCENES Words by Julie Hays Photos by Jon Lopez / Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame

O

ne glance around the room and we knew we were in the presence of basketball royalty.

Michael Jordan was there. So were Magic Johnson, Dr. J, Bill Walton, Bill Russell, and now joining their club, Kim Mulkey. The former Baylor coach was enshrined on May 15, as a member of the 2020 induction class, into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., and I was fortunate enough, along with my son, John, 8, and two basketball-loving cousins, brothers Clint and Clay Spencer, to be there to witness the historic event. And it's a memory we'll carry for a lifetime. I felt so much pride for her as a longtime friend but above that I felt pride for all of Waco. "It's the granddaddy of them all," Kim said when I asked her if this was the highlight of her career. "I’m just looking around like a kid in a candy store. I mean you’re looking at the best of the best in basketball and I'm looking at all my heroes and the people I watched growing up. I'm just truly humbled." Jordan escorted Mulkey to the stage for the induction ceremony. They go back a long way. They were on USA Olympic basketball teams in 1984. But Mulkey’s 2-year-old grandson, Kannon, is too young to know about Jordan’s feats. So, when Jordan turned to greet the family, Kannon started to sing the theme from the movie “Space Jam,” in which Jordan starred in the 1990s. Kannon knows his movies. Mulkey is now the women's basketball coach at LSU, but she was voted into the Hall because of her success as a coach at Baylor where she led the Lady Bears to a 632-104 overall record, clinching 23 Big 12 regular season and tournament titles.

80 | moderntexasliving.com

And she brought home the most coveted hardware three times, winning national championships in 2005, 2012 and 2019. Her record speaks for itself, and the basketball world agreed she’s among the greatest ever to play or coach the game. Mulkey's class included players Kevin Garnett, who played 21 seasons in the NBA, Tim Duncan, who spent his entire 19-year playing career with the San Antonio Spurs, and beloved Los Angeles Laker Kobe Bryant, who died last year in a helicopter crash. I teared up during the ceremony as Coach Mulkey gave an impassioned speech that came from her heart. Sure, she had a teleprompter just like all the inductees, but she barely used it and I was watching. She went off-script, which I loved because that's the Kim we all know and love. Real and authentic. Mulkey was a great ambassador for Central Texas. She and her teams were a source of pride for the university during some tough times. And she always gave back to the community that supported her program and her players. I've watched her read to youngsters in class, sign hats, call hospital patients, and invite fans to her office for their birthdays. If there was a need anywhere in the community, she was willing to help. Her contributions off the court are as much a part of her legacy here as her successes on the hardwood. And if there were a hall of fame for generosity of spirit, she’d surely be inducted.

paradise found

Port Aransas Port Aransas is one of Texas’ few beach towns, but it is one definitely worth checking out. Located five hours away from Waco and nearly seven hours away from Dallas, it’s four hours away from the south of Austin along the Gulf of Mexico. Originally a location for pirates in the early 19th century, Port Aransas is now known for its resort status due to the many opportunities for fishing, swimming, surfing, and camping. Better known as Port A, this quaint beach town is loved by locals and vacationers alike.

Cinnamon Shore

Words by Chloe Caballero / Photos by Ashley Munn Photography 84 | moderntexasliving.com

A welcoming beach community where Southern charm meets beach chic. Since 2006, Cinnamon Shore has perfected the balance of relaxation and recreation. They have perfected the art of resort vacation as they draw in all genres of guests such as families, wedding parties, college students, and even couples looking to get away for a few days. Vacationers are charmed by the sophisticated, Americana homes that line the property as well as the plentiful amenities offered. Cinnamon Shore goes above and beyond to offer upscale experience. Guests can lounge by any of the three pools on location, cruise on personal golf carts, dine at the Shore’s signature restaurants, or partake in relaxing morning yoga on the beach. For families seeking more inclusive activities, Cinnamon Shore provides endless fun for the whole group. There is everything from surf lessons, s’mores night, movie under the stars, giant chess and checkers on the Great Lawn, and more. Cinnamon Shore even has Quiet Hours, where from ten p.m. to six a.m. the resort asks guests to maintain low volumes out of respect for other residents. The most appealing aspect of Cinnamon Shore is that guests of all ages and groups will be able to find luxury and leisure. Cinnamon Shore is a place that not just offers homes, but feels like home.

Vacation Rentals Aside from the orange and white striped umbrellas, Cinnamon Shore might be best known for their timeless, upscale homes. With over 200 homes, townhomes, cottages, and condos to its name, all properties offer their own beautiful architecture or aesthetically pleasing design. The swaying palm trees lining the homes add the perfect effect to the community’s classic beach porch appeal. There is a 2-6 night minimum for most rentals, and for the larger homes it's a 4-5 night minimum. While the homes all share a similar aesthetic, there are specific features unique to properties such as grills, being dog friendly, or a view that overlooks the beach. It’s often dependant on the home, but many supply basics such as kitchen utensils, pots and pans, plates, cups, laundry rooms, and free Wifi. It’s worth recommending to either rent a golf cart or spend some time walking around the property to soak in the charm of Cinnamon Shore’s private seaside village.

"Our house was beautiful and incredibly spacious. The staff made our stay very relaxing and convenient!"

-Lenny

Resort Activities Cinnamon Shore hosts a multitude of activities and events that are worth checking out. For the active ocean lovers, there are surf lessons or sand castle building; for those wanting to unwind, you can reserve a bonfire at night or join morning yoga on the beach. Always check the community calendar for upcoming events such as movies on the Great Lawn, live music concerts, s’more nights, and paddleboard yoga. Residents who are looking for more invigorating workouts should sign up for Beach Body Burn with Rachel. Associated with Cinnamon Shore, Rachel’s workouts bring fitness fun in the sun, where guests can burn calories instead of getting sunburnt. For less scheduled activities, Cinnamon Shore offers bike rentals, a fishing dock perfect for an idle fishing day (there is a catch and release policy), and the grassy knolls with oversized games, tetherball, and ladder ball golf. ON THE ROAD

Beach & Pool The three luxury pools at Cinnamon Shore live up to their name. As the largest and more central of the pools, Dune Pool provides amenities such as seasonal bar service, spacious room for sunbathing, shaded cabanas, and even a giant wooden pirate ship for kids to play in. The gorgeous Kiera’s Pool includes an infinity edge that appears to almost disappear into the coastal lake. It is also located right next to C Bar, one of the Shore’s eateries that offers light cocktails and meals. Stillwater Pool is Cinnamon Shore’s heated pool, and worth taking a dip in. There is no better way to relax at the beach than under Cinnamon Shore’s signature orange and white striped umbrellas and chairs. At only $35 per set/per day, the set includes two chairs and one umbrella, the hasslefree set up really is worth the cost. While Cinnamon Shore does sit on public beach property, there is privatized area that can be accessed from the wooden boardwalk. The area is well groomed and only a short walk or golf cart ride away.

"S'mores on the beach was our favorite part!" -Hudson & Nico

"I loved the wide range of food the resort offered! It was great for kids and adults!" - Publisher's favorite

Food There are plenty of food options to choose from when it comes to the Cinnamon Shore menu selection. Start mornings off at Coffee Waves, a quaint coffee shop near the front of Cinnamon Shore. Later, grab a seat at Dylan’s Coal Oven Pizza. Located at the resort’s center, enjoy authentic New York pizza, pasta, and Italian sandwiches either on indoors or on the breezy outside patios. Highly recommended is the Bianca or Arugula and Prosciutto pizzas, and should be paired with the popular Pineapple Jalepeño Margarita. For sweet tooth cravings stop by C Treats which

sells drinks, snowcones, and ice cream. Positioned nicely on the Great Lawn, it is the perfect pit stop for when Cinnamon Shore hosts movies under the stars. For a finer atmosphere, Lisabella’s is a beachside upscale eatery with fantastic courses such as the sea bass black drum paired with a delicious cocktail like the Paloma (Silver tequila, fresh grapefruit juice, grapefruit salt, and fresh lime). Finally, The Market is the perfect place to restock your kitchen or drop by for small snacks and don't forget to pick up your favorite adult beverages at The Bottle Shoppe liquor store. You are in for a treat with all of the amazing options Cinnamon Shore has to offer.
