A PLACE TO CALL HOME By Cambridge Home Company, Design + Build Photos by Rebekah Westover

With a soothing color palette and moody use of bold accents, this beautiful Stone Colonial home, by Utah designer and builder Cambridge Home Company, boasts daring design elements that bring balance and comfort to a timeless yet modern home. “Designed for a large family, and with an emphasis on hosting large gatherings, the formal family room was created as a place that could entertain many while maintaining an intimate usable space for everyday life,” says Rochelle Broadhead, Creative Director at Cambridge Home Company. Upon entering the home, the foyer allows for a place to welcome guests that opens to a spacious formal family room with floor to ceiling windows and doors capturing a breathtaking view of an unobstructed Utah mountain range. A two-stage crowned ceiling is detailed with a mix of Federal and Georgian style moulding. “We used a mix of bold shapes and simple beaded moulding to refine the trim elements to really make a statement,” says Chad Broadhead, Master Carpenter and Principal at Cambridge Home Company. The marble fireplace is a beautiful focal point to the room. “Our home owner was inspired by a beautiful historical fireplace. We worked with Stone Mountain Fireplaces to scale and hand carve the beautiful detail as a breathtaking centerpiece to this formal gathering space,” says Rochelle.

AT HOME Two built-in china hutches are reminiscent of a historical piece that perfectly mirror the entrance of the tech-nook. Wood-turned feet and cremone bolt hardware add a beautifully understated elegance to the family room as it transitions into the kitchen. Historic white oak flooring flows into a dramatic kitchen setting just off the formal living room. The designer accented beautiful Calcutta capri marble with restoration hardware bistro shelving to give a dramatic contrast of texture and movement. “I wanted to make sure the space was grounded against the movement of the beautiful backsplash and pushed my client out of her comfort zone to use Nocturnal Honed granite for the island,” says Rochelle. To infuse the shelving décor with glamour, the designer brought in pops of rich metals and clean white dishes adding vibrant fruits and paintings.

Intimate spaces provide the perfect backdrop for bold moody accents. The piano room and the office tech nook are mirroring rooms in the formal family and are painted Farrow & Ball Down Pipe, while the mudroom is Farrow & Ball Inchyra Blue. Rochelle notes, “We used gold as an accent against the rich color palate to really accent the depth of the wall colors, and create movement within the rooms.”

AT HOME

The master bedroom boasts beautiful, delicate layers of finish moulding details. “I wanted to emphasize the 12’ tall ceilings by creating panels that equally and beautifully divide the space, while not overtaking the room with various different shapes,” says Chad. The designer painted the ceiling Ocean Storm, a beautiful rich ceiling color to add to the moody feel of the elegant room, while framing it against the historic Menlo Park Hudson Valley chandelier. Bedrosian Blomma tile in bianco adds beautiful dimension and texture to the primary bath setting. A freestanding tub flanks two waterfall edge vanities. With a nod to the historic style, and to bring continuity to the space, a smaller version of the Menlo Park Hudson Valley chandelier and sconces are featured in this eloquent bath.

“Being a part of creating beautifully design-built homes is part of what brings Chad and I so much joy," says Rochelle. "Having wonderful clients who trust in the joy," is part of what makes each Cambridge Home Company project uniquely special.” The result is not simply another home, it is the efforts of many to create a truly thoughtfully designed, beautiful dream home that speaks to the family for which it was inspired.

TIME TO DECLUTTER

By Jennifer Snyder @Neatasapin Photo: The Container Store

There is one truth in organizing: you cannot organize clutter. Clutter is more than just the stuff sitting on your kitchen counter. It is the stuff in your closets and cabinets preventing you from putting away the stuff on your kitchen counter. It is anything we do not use or love. Every single one of us has clutter – even professional organizers. Fortunately, I have devised a simple formula to address your clutter and dedicate your space to the life you are living today. With this system, it is not a one-and-done scenario. Decluttering is a way of life, starting as a project, becoming a habit, then part of your routine. Identify what to declutter. Start by decluttering like items, such as candles or socks. Pull everything out where you can see it all at once. You have to see it to know you have it. Remove what you no longer love or use. You should love or love to use everything in your home. Clean the space. Wipe down drawers or shelves while everything is out. Return items to the storage space starting with your favorites. When you run out of space, everything else is clutter. Donate what is left. Find a great charity you can feel good about supporting. Once you eliminate the clutter, something amazing happens; organizing becomes easier and sometimes even automatic. If you want to be more organized, always start with removing the clutter and Neat as a Pin® can help.

Ultimate PANTRY ORGANIZATION

By Brooke Larsen @brooke_startathome Cabinetry by Foxwood

Even the most organized people struggle to find ways of keeping their kitchen pantry orderly. When you’re constantly adding and removing items, disorder naturally occurs. Before you know it, your bins, cereal and cans are clumped together and you missed the fact that you’re out of the ingredients for the dinner you’ve been dreaming about all day. The trick to eliminating this unnecessary chaos is to develop an efficient organizational system for your pantry. When my husband and I designed our pantry, it was not very wide so we did not want to cram in too many appliances. We put in our microwave, as well as the water bottle filler and an ice machine – my husband’s “must have”. We have now been in our home 6 weeks and our pebble ice machine and water bottle filler are easily our most used appliances.

Organization My goal for my house was to have a place for everything, even in the pantry. Having functional space as well as attractive space is always ideal.

20 | moderntexasliving.com

The gallon glass jars are great for holding sugar, flour, beans, rice and even my husband’s protein powder. I also love having a countertop in here. This countertop is liberty bronze quartz from Daltile. I got wire baskets for my produce that doesn’t need to be refrigerated, and these awesome racks make storing and rotating my canned goods so much easier. For items that weren’t as pretty, I got these seagrass baskets. Some items in the baskets include: top ramen, cake mixes and other baking supplies, chips, packaged oatmeal, etc.

The clear plastic containers have the button on top that you push to seal. I absolutely love these. I put crackers, pretzels, noodles, hot chocolate, oatmeal, croutons and a few other baking items in them. My can racks have been a lifesaver. Not only do they help to organize my cans, but it helps rotate the food as well. (view here)

APARTMENT LIVING

MODERN TEXAS LIVING | 23

AT HOME

24 | moderntexasliving.com

Growing up in this apartment, I had a long time to think about exactly how I wanted it to look, but it still took a lot of trial and error to find my design style. I first went through a say-yes-to-any-offerfor-free-furniture phase, followed by a bold color phase, a boho phase, a neutral phase, but nothing felt right in the space. My apartment is pre-war, meaning it’s of a particular style built before World War II, in the 1920’s. Full of intricate wall mouldings, parquet wood floors, detailed wood trim and artdeco fireplaces, it certainly does not lack charm. I knew that my design choices had to pay homage to the character of the apartment and time period in which it was built. I have always admired the late 19th-early 20th century European-influenced architecture of my neighborhood; it was through my daily walks that inspiration struck. I saw how intricate the details on the buildings were, and I realized I needed to highlight and compliment the original features of my apartment.

I turned to Pinterest, and became obsessed with the grand, bright Parisian apartments with their high ceilings, delicate trim work and statement chandeliers. I began my own Instagram, @hattiekolp, where I shared my DIY home renovations, projects, and design endeavors. Connecting with others on Instagram also became a huge source of inspiration for me. I began to purge a lot of furniture, decided on a color palette, and invested in things like art, light fixtures, and vintage rugs. I like to have a juxtaposition of white, glossy painted rooms and deeper, darker colors in other rooms. Growing up, my mom was an art-historian and raised me in museums and art galleries, so I have a true appreciation for art and antiques. I like to fill my walls and shelves with family heirlooms and treasures I’ve found while thrifting. To keep it from being too grandma-chic, I like to balance the antiques with modern touches like my tall, white book shelves, green velvet couch, and spindly ceiling light fixtures. My goal during renovations was not to change or modernize, but instead restore the apartment to its original glory. One of the most impactful home projects I’ve done to date was tearing down the walls that had been built over all the pocket doors. I suppose a previous tenant wanted to create a distinct division between rooms, or more wall space, but to me the pocket doors are the gem of the apartment. I love having them all open, for an airy, open-concept feel, or closing them on rainy days to create cozy, enclosed spaces. The biggest compliment I’ve gotten is when people tell me standing in my home is like stepping into another time period; if only walls could talk . . .

Next, we cover the mattress topper with a fitted sheet. Designer Fav: Soprano Sheet Set by Peacock Alley

Then we layer with the flat sheet.

On top of the flat sheet we layer a summer weight duvet insert for some added weight. Designer Fav: Down Inc.

We then cover the insert with a coverlet. Any coverlet will do. Designer Fav: Peacock Alley

Finally, at the end of the bed, we style a duvet cover double stuffed with 2 down Inc summer weight inserts. This duvet can be pulled up while sleeping or simply stay folded as a statement at the end of the bed. We prefer to stuff the duvet cover with 2 inserts for added fluff.

Lastly, before climbing into bed at night, don't forget to spray your linens with a linen spray of your choice. Designer Fav: LeBlanc Lavender Linen Water

As designers, we are always asked if there is a proper way to "dress a bed." The answer is yes, there are many proper ways, but here is our most favorite for style and comfort.

OPENING FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE SOON. MEDICINE AS IT SHOULD BE.

Simply stated, Functional Medicine looks at the root cause of illness. Instead of throwing medications on various symptoms (which often creates new symptoms), Functional Medicine asks the question “why?” is the symptom there in the first place? Our goal is to assist the body in the healing process and removing factors that are hindering the body from achieving optimal wellness.

Sarah Campbell will be the primary Physician Assistant at our new location. She is trained in Functional Medicine and specializes in treating adults who are searching for answers as to why they always feel tired, have chronic gut problems or feel older than their actual age. Easter Tablescape By Cherie @sweetroseandwren

2020 brought a lot of unnecessary “clutter” into my brain, and had me craving simple, clean, and peaceful surroundings in the new year, while still feeding my creativity. White dishes are a staple in my home and are always what I start with in all of my tablescapes. These dishes were collected from Anthropology years ago. The wooden chargers were a simple diy: unfinished wood chargers found at Michael’s, stained in my favorite “weathered” stain by old barn living, and lightly dry brushed in white. The copper utensils were a great find from Walmart! The cups are from Amazon. In the center, a brown paper table runner doubles as place setting name tags. I wrote the names over each plate using a gold paint pen. A simple centerpiece of a white and green floral arrangement on top of a cake plate for height, and my favorite “handsome rabbit” who has been with us many years complete the spring tablescape.

INSIDE BUSINESS

JOHNSON ROOFING WHAT ASPECTS OF THE BUSINESS DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST? Sharing Christian values with our Johnson Roofing family and all those we come in contact with is my passion.

WHAT SETS YOU APART? Safety is our number one priority, and we have one of the best safety records for a roofing contractor in Texas. Our crews, including subcontractor partners, are covered by worker's compensation insurance, which covers the workers, the property owners, and the company. For more information or to schedule a complimentary roof inspection, please call 254.662.5571 or visit the website at jroof.com.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS? Johnson Roofing is a full-service roofing company serving residential and commercial customers spanning Texas' southern and northern borders, primarily on the I-35 corridor. This year we are celebrating our 80th Anniversary.

WHAT DOES THE JOHNSON ROOFING TAGLINE, PURSUING EXCELLENCE SINCE 1941, MEAN? In our family, Pursuing Excellence is a mission that began with my grandparents and my dad, Bill. Not only did my dad grow Johnson Roofing into one of Texas' top roofing companies, but he was also a premier

horseman in the 1950s, '60s, and '70s. Same with me, whether running Johnson Roofing or competing with my horses, I want to do my best. My pursuit of excellence is my way of honoring my family's incredible legacy while also keeping the mission alive, hopefully for the next 80 years.

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES OF THE ROOFING INDUSTRY TODAY? The biggest challenge we face is finding people who have a strong work ethic. Having years of roof installation experience is not a prerequisite to work here. Through Johnson Roofing University, we provide our team members the instruction they need to do their job, whether on a roof or in the office. MODERN TEXAS LIVING | 43

The natural stones and crystals sprinkled on shelves and walls throughout the space entice visitors to touch and feel, absorbing their energy. With beautiful beams and exposed brick, the building holds over 100 years of history and creates inspiration itself. Breaking into the goldsmithing scene as a young woman was no easy feat, but McEathron did so with grace and grit. Having mastered her craft for over 30 years, she thrives on collaborating with a variety of clientele, from a man anxious to surprise his future wife with an engagement ring that truly reflects her style to a daughter seeking to transform an heirloom piece from her grandmother’s jewelry into a beautiful wearable memory. n a quaint street in downtown Waco, Linda McEathron starts her busy mornings by watching the sun rise over the city from behind the bench in her brand new custom jewelry studio. With a hot cup of coffee and a gallon of inspiration, she’s ready to change the world, one piece of jewelry at a time.

McEathron is proud to showcase the works of other independent women jewelry makers, from Los Angeles to Portland to New Jersey. “It was truly work to carve out my place in this industry and I want to give that opportunity to other women who are making incredible works of art,” McEathron said. PROBLEM. Dry Damaged Hair FIX. First ON A CLOUD BAOBAB OIL REPAIR SHAMPOO + MASQUE then SUNCATCHER On a cloud is R+Co’s newest set of products and it’s amazing! It’s good for anyone looking to repair their hair from damage while leaving it soft and silky smooth. The ultimate baobab oil-protein technology helps to rebuild bonds for healthy hair fibers from the inside out. Suncatcher is the best leave-in conditioner that helps soften, seal, detangle and fight frizz. Good for all hair types in need of protective nourishment, light hold and shine. I use this everyday on wet or dry hair. I swear by it! Keeps my hair and my extension hair smooth and silky! PROBLEM. Dry Itchy Scalp FIX. CROWN SCALP SCRUB or ACID WASH Over washing your hair everyday can dry out your scalp. The best solution would be to alternate your shower routine between a shampoo + conditioner, a treatment, or just rinsing if you feel you need to wet your hair everyday. Crown Scalp Scrub makes the best at home treatment for a clean, rebalanced scalp to optimize follicle health. Or An apple cider vinegar rinse! It will help control dandruff and flaky skin. Acid wash is best for calming the scalp, and restoring hair back to a natural, clean + shiny state. I love using this in between extension move ups. After all of the product buildup, my scalp feels squeaky!

PROBLEM. Hair Growth FIX. I could tell you to take your vitamins and to drink lots of water but let’s be honest, Handtied Hair Extensions are always the answer! Can be used for adding mermaid locks, or even just some extra volume. Good for all hair types, with zero damage to your natural hair. No adhesive, glue or sticky tape. Cortny + Co has not just been a dream of mine, it’s been my plan basically

my whole life. It would be different than anything like anyone had ever seen, something more than just your typical salon experience. I wanted to create a luxurious space where clients could come in, relax and feel right at home. Then walk out feelin’ like a queen. Where stylists like me, would love coming “to work” everyday, sharing their God given talents and hustle with the world. Babes, who truly support other babes. Good vibes only. Not only beautiful, but peaceful. My own sanctuary.

8 WAYS TO CREATE A SPACE for the culture you want When I think of home, all I can think of is “Ahhh, I can relax now, because I am with my people.” When I had the opportunity to open my own real estate brokerage, that is the exact feeling I wanted others to have when they walked into our office. I knew I didn’t want to be like most real estate brokerages from the design and style of my office to my company vision and culture.

By Amber Brown, Broker for White Label Realty photos by Taylor Friedman

I chose custom furniture made by my husband featuring natural wood accented with metal. I felt this combination was a perfect reflection of my personality, staying true to who I am, but embracing my edgy side. The light walls, floor and ceiling creates a calming and peaceful workspace with a little splash of accent color to represent our love for vibrant personalities. I wanted to scatter plants into our decor to represent life and continual growth. Music is always playing and is a must for a fun and engaging atmosphere. An open work space was a requirement to help foster relationships among our agents, and create an environment of collaboration, motivation, and support.

I went back to what I feel like when I am home…What would that feel and look like for an office? How do I make the space feel like a home away from home?

I created a formal workspace and a casual workspace so our agents have a choice of where to work based on their needs and mood for the day.

It starts with being authentic and intentional. Each element of the office is a reflection of my personality and served a purpose of creating the environment we wanted. Some of these elements are the following:

The most important aspect of our office space is laughter.

I insisted on an abundance of windows that allowed plenty of natural light, keeping the mood always bright.

Mix all of these elements together and I’ve accomplished creating an office space that is exactly what I visualized. This space is our culture, our style, our vibe....where we can let go and just enjoy what we do, how we do it and who we do it with because together we grow. MODERN TEXAS LIVING | 61

FINDING MYSELF AT 40 By Julie Hays

I'm turning 40 this year. What once seemed like a lifetime away is here -- 2021. I'm reaching the milestone with three incredible kids, one of whom is turning 10, an amazing husband and a career that's spanned nearly 20 years at KWTX. And I'm happy. But until just a few months ago, I was dreading the big 4-0. This week I listened as a woman who just turned 40 told me how “terrible” it was, and until recently, I would have agreed. But I made a choice to change my life. And not just that, I gave myself the OK, for the first time since becoming a mom, to take some time for “me.” As a person in a high-risk category for COVID-19, the pandemic has been extremely isolating. I slipped into depression, rarely seeing anyone outside my own household. To cope, I turned to food and I stopped exercising. I wasn't happy. Before I knew it, I turned 39 as someone I didn't even recognize. I feared turning 40 would be even worse. I don't know why I reached out to wellness coach Jenny McCormick, but I'm glad I did. I knew very little about her program before I started working with her. It taught me over the next few months how to eat and love myself again.

LIFE & STYLE

At first, the task seemed daunting. Meal prep? As a non-cook, I couldn't even make my way around the grocery store. Goals? I was too old to dream, right? Or so I thought. Jenny changed my life and although she's a fitness trainer this wasn't about hitting the gym. For 12 weeks, I woke up each morning and did some soul searching. She asked me to write down and send her my goals, my struggles, the things I was proud of that day and one promise I'd make to myself. Oh, and I had to name one thing I was grateful for. Talk about changing perspective quickly. I don't think I've ever put anything like that on paper and certainly not every day. As my mind changed, so did my body. I cut out the diet sodas I was addicted to for 30 years and began to drink water, for the first time in my life. (I know!) I dropped the bag of chocolates I could easily devour in one sitting and began to fuel my body with healthy foods. Instead of taking a nap, I began to run and lost 40 pounds. I don't think joy results from the size of your jeans, but for me it has come from regaining control of my life and not just at the kitchen table. The changes started a ripple effect. I sleep better. I seek counseling. My skin is healthier. I'm happier. My relationships are stronger. It doesn't matter if you're 21 or 39 or 65, we all have a choice to make each morning. Your glass can be half empty or half full. You can be tired or rejuvenated. Defeated or proud. Outof-control or guiding your every move. And you can really find your best self. It's never too late. Homemade Hummus INGREDIENTS 28 oz can Low sodium chickpeas, rinsed and drained 1/2 c Tahini 3-4 tbsp Lemon juice 3 tbsp Olive oil 3 cloves Garlic 1 tsp Cumin 1/2 tsp Salt (or more to taste) 1-2 tbsp Water

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Drain and rinse chickpeas in a colander with water. Place chickpeas on a paper towel and dry off. Using another paper towel gently rub the chickpeas to help the skin fall over. I recommend removing the skin from at least half of the chickpeas to help with a creamy texture. It’s tedious but worth it. 2. To a food processor add chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic cloves, cumin and salt. Blend for 2-3 minutes until the hummus is nice and creamy. 3. If your hummus seems too thick, add a couple tablespoons of water to thin it out. 4. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4-5 days. CALENDAR OF EVENTS PINWHEELS FOR PREVENTION BREAK THE SILENCE Break the Silence is a private Facebook group created by Lindsey Mallard on February 22, 2019. She created this private group so followers could stay informed on all the information posted since Facebook pages don’t reach the entire audience. This is a private group where she will post lots of educational materials to bring awareness to child sexual abuse. She’s made it her mission to help break the cycle of abuse and the first step in prevention is education. Lindsey says, “If we educate our children early on, they will be able to recognize inappropriate behavior and keep their bodies safe.” It’s never too early to start teaching your children about body safety. She posts links to community resources available to victims and their families. This is not a hotline or group to report sexual abuse. In addition, Lindsey is here if you need support outside of the group! She has also created multiple fundraisers including garage sales, t-shirts and more. All funds raised benefit Advocacy Center for Crime Victims and Children. Lindsey will be the featured Guest Speaker at Waco Mardi Gras Ball on Saturday May 22, 2021 at The Baylor Club at McLane Stadium.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention month, and with a donation of $25, you will recieve a pinwheel to display in your yard that will benefit Advocacy Center for Crime Victims and Children. For more details call 254-752-9330.

French Macarons INGREDIENTS 1 ²/3 c 1c 3 large ¼c

powdered sugar almond flour egg whites granulated sugar

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Line a cookie sheet with a silicone mat or you can use parchment paper if you don't have one. 2. Using a food processor, pulse the powdered sugar and almond flour until fully combined and rid of lumps. Sift the combined dry ingredients into a large bowl. If you do not have a food processor you can just sift. 3. In a medium bowl, prepare the french meringue. Beat the egg whites on low speed with a hand mixer until they get frothy. Increase the speed and slowly add the sugar. Beat until stiff peaks form. If you want to add any food coloring, do it now, but use it sparingly or you will make the meringue too liquidy.

4. Add the french meringue into the dry ingredients and begin to gently fold. The batter should be fully combined and not streaky. When you are able to make a figure 8 with the batter in one motion, the batter is ready. If it is too runny it has been over-mixed. 5. Transfer the batter to a piping bag fitted with a piping tip. Pipe 1-inch disks on to the silicone mat. 6. Tap the cookie sheet on the countertop 3 or 4 times to get rid of any air bubbles. Use a toothpick to pop any remaining air bubbles. 7. Allow the macarons to rest for an hour or until the tops of the macarons have dried. You will be able to gently run your finger over them without anything getting on your finger. 8. Preheat the oven to 280º F. 9. Place the macarons on the middle rack of the oven and bake for 5 minutes, rotate the cookie sheet and bake for another 5 minutes, rotate the pan one last time and bake for 3-5 minutes. 13-15 minutes in total. 10. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely on the cookie sheet. 11. If the macarons were baked correctly, they should easily peel off of the silicone mat. By Ellie Haley @kitchen335co

Technically, both are neurotoxin derived from clostridium botulinum, an organism found in the natural environment that temporarily reduces the activity of the muscles in the face.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I’M A GOOD CANDIDATE? When you come in for your complimentary consultation, we will go over your brief medical history. You will meet the physician to determine if you are a good candidate. We will go over what you’d like to achieve with your treatment, and if you are prepared to maintain the treatments.

DOES IT HURT? Most new patients expect the treatment to be much more painful and take much longer than it actually does. At the end of each appointment, my patients are shocked at how smooth and quick the process is to receive the treatment.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST? The average cost is between $230.00 and $345.00 without any promotional offers. After your 10 day followup, we will schedule your 12 week appointment to continue your Botox or Dysport maintenance.

Traveling Today IT’S THE LITTLE DETAILS ON THE ROAD

COVID-19

TRAVEL NECESSITIES Travel-size Lysol Spray Antibacterial wipes Hand sanitizer Extra masks At least 2 weeks extra of your prescriptions, along with over the counter remedies for the coronavirus.

By Dana Lewis with @discovereighngwithdanatravel

Are there travel restrictions between states? Currently, we are open to state to state travel. However, some states do require a negative COVID test for entry. It is also important to consider what is open where you are interested in traveling. Will I need to be tested to travel? Some states/countries require a negative test for entry, while others do not. Anyone arriving in the U.S. from a foreign country must present a negative COVID test to board their flight. This applies to citizens and non-citizens alike.

Are all international countries open to travel? No, not all countries are open for travel. Will I need to quarantine when I arrive at my destination and when I return back home? Most destinations only require quarantine if you DO NOT present a negative test upon arrival. For the return home, though it is not currently mandatory, it is recommended to quarantine for 10 days, or test at 3-5 days after arriving home.
