pon entering this beautifully built home, we knew it was the perfect fit for our family. With incredible natural light, high vaulted ceilings,

and an open concept, it was the exact description of what we were looking for— a home in which we would love raising our girls and a great place to entertain family and friends. We worked with Traci Connell Interiors of Dallas in furnishing our house, primarily because of her ease of glamour concept. She chooses furniture, fabrics, and accessories not only based on beauty but also functionality. Considering everything from fabric guard & stain resistant rugs, to a multi-purpose room serving as a bar for the adults and a playroom for our kids, we are able to enjoy our home without worrying about red wine spills on the white couch or the kids coloring on a dining room chair.

The expansive walls allow for non-traditional placement of art and accessories. “I love to mix antique store finds with modern new decor, it gives the design more character while still looking beautiful, yet not perfect.”

This vintage European style custom built home has re-imagined the Waco vacation rental scene as a designer Airbnb haven. The Halet House, designed by interior designer, Angela Sims and husband Donny with Halet James Design Co., serves as both a showcase for their work and Waco’s newest premier vacation rental. “I wanted to create a space filled with every idea I have wanted to do, but did not have the right project,” says Angela. “While growing up in Waco, I have fallen in love with learning all about Waco’s past and wanted to use this project to also pay homage to Waco’s rich history.” The open kitchen and dining room is a beautiful space styled in rich greens and crisp white walls with furniture and decor accents in beautiful wood tones. Mixing vintage elements like the cabinet trim and pulls with more modern touches like the vent-a-hood and the sleek quartz countertops make for a beautiful pairing. Angela says when designing to also serve as a vacation rental, she also had to consider first impressions and homey touches. “I wanted the design to be different as soon as people walk through the front door. I focused on making the kitchen a statement piece with the built in china cabinets on both sides and choosing such a deep bold cabinet color.” MODERN TEXAS LIVING | 15

LIVING ROOM The large windows, adorned with 20 foot custom curtains, give the space great natural lighting while also adding the perfect show stopper element to the exterior of the home. A built in bench with drawers was added for additional seating and storage. Above the sitting nook is a collection of historic photos of Waco. The history behind each photo is shared in a book the owners created for guests to enjoy.

B AT H R O O M The vanity is a vintage buffet from England that was painted, and a quartz counter top was added along with new hardware. “The art above the toilet always makes for a great conversation piece. I always get asked, why her eyes are crossed out. The answer is simple – who wants someone watching them use the restroom?”

BEDROOMS The larger bedroom features two queen beds found on Wayfair. “These were by far the biggest bang for my buck. At only $300 for the entire bed frame, you just can’t beat it!”. Beautiful beams accent the slanted ceiling while windows showcase the large backyard. The black side table was a $100 piece found on Facebook and painted black. In the smaller bedroom, they pay tribute to Baylor University. The windows are adorned with velvet green curtains and the bed is accented with a gold throw pillow. Above the bed is a photo from the late 1800s of the University, and Baylor's 1899 football team is accented on the nightstand. The historic photos throughout the home were collected during weeks of research at a Baylor library. MODERN TEXAS LIVING | 19

DIY SPONGE WALL By Regan Mauck @thebloomingnest

hen my mom decided she wanted to make her playroom closet into a little nursery for

the grandkids, I knew I wanted to help. We wanted to make it feel sweet and complete without doing or spending too much. I knew this would be the perfect place for a sponge accent wall like I had seen in my friend Jess’ home (@carcabaroad). You get the look of wallpaper for a couple of dollars. We decided to leave the shelf in the closet and use it for baskets and decor. We also chose to only do the sponge wall on the lower portion of the wall. We started by cutting the shape that we wanted out of the sponge. This took us a couple of tries to get it right. I wanted a shape that resembled a simple flower. To make it easy, you can also choose to leave the sponge as is and use the long side of it like Jess did in her daughter’s room, in the picture on the right. Once we found the shape we liked,

Image by Jess Davis with @carcabaroad

we poured some paint onto a paper plate. We used my very favorite paint color, “Pigeon” by Farrow and Ball. We decided to “eye-ball” where to put each flower on the wall rather than measure or use a level. It worked

using a level for your project. We began placing the sponge on the wall in a pattern until we finished. It was as simple as that, and the room was completely transformed.

SORT IT OUT THE GARAGE By Kristana Doreck

garage has been organized. Here are a few tips to get your garage living up to its fullest potential.

Some sports equipment, such as baseball bats or soccer/basketballs, can be mounted on the wall.

Store your weather tight bins on some industrial shelving that can line the perimeter of the garage. These bins will keep seasonal items and other items dry.

Tidy Tip: Store a step stool either on the wall or between the shelves to make it easier to grab boxes from the top shelf.

Using vertical space in the garage is key. Creating a way that items can be easily stored, but also easily accessed, should be the goal.

Invest in a tool bench for all hardware and auto supplies. Don't forget to label the drawers so everything gets put in the right place every time. Assess the tools you have and find what size will work best for your items and your space. MODERN TEXAS LIVING | 31

CREATING

a Cozy Space

By Brooke Morales @ blindsey

Are you longing for a living space that looks beautiful while still having the ability to curl up and read a book or watch a good movie with your family? Whether you’re in a new build or just wanting to make your current home feel a bit more inviting, here are few ingredients that are sure to give your home the ultimate cozy living vibes.

Let’s Get Cozy – Upholstery My number one ingredient to creating a cozy living space is upholstery. You want to melt into the furniture you’re lounging on. This can be achieved with upholstered sofas that provide deep seating. If space allows, go for a large sectional. Avoid rough fabrics or furniture that is too stiff. You can add a cozy side chair or two to bring your space together. Textured stools are another option if you’re working with minimal space.

Tip: Ditching pre-matched furniture pieces is the perfect way to create visual texture which is going to make your space more cozy and inviting. Similar but non-matching is the goal.

Ambiance is Everything – Lighting Tip: For the ultimate cozy feeling, get a fixture that is dimmable so you can set the mood for any occasion.

Lighting sets the tone for your entire space so you want to create warmth with the lighting you choose for your room. You can achieve this by steering clear of bright white lighting which can make your space feel sterile. I love the statement a chandelier can make and the flattering glow it brings to a room. This is a great option to instantly transform your space into a cozy haven. Alternatively, an ambient lamp can do the same thing if a chandelier isn’t an option.

Mix it Up – Textures The secret to creating spaces that feel warm and welcoming is texture. To transform your space into the cozy sanctuary you’ve been dreaming about incorporate wood tones, metals, and luxe fabrics. You can achieve this by using textured elements such as a wood/metal coffee table, velvet throw pillows, faux-fur blankets, or organic accent pieces (i.e. metal/wood geometric pieces or knick-knacks).

Tip: Mix textures and patterns to create interest in your space. You can find the source for the pillows seen here by visiting www.landofpillows.com or @landofpillows. Another one of our favorite places to purchase pillows is @laurelandblush.

Bring on The Charm – Rugs You can easily add charm and extra warmth to your living space by throwing down a cozy rug to finish off the space. My personal favorite – and the coziest option in my opinion – would be a shag rug or something with high pile. There’s just something about sinking your toes into a plush rug that gives all the cozy feels. Am I right?

Tip: In lieu of a wood/metal coffee table, you can use an upholstered and/or tufted ottoman to make your space more comfortable all while adding additional texture.

Never Too Many – Pillows If you asked my husband, he might disagree, but too many pillows never hurt anybody. All jokes aside, I love how throw pillows add extra depth to a space, plus you can easily swap them out from season to season. During off seasons, you can simply select a few textures, patterns, and colors to warm up your space – giving all the cozy feels!

Tip: When selecting a rug, size matters. Ideally, all furniture should be on top of the rug ( front legs only is optimal, but not always possible). When you’re sitting on your sofa you want your feet on something soft, not the floor. You can find the source for the rug seen here (Francesca Cream Rug) by visiting mohawkhome.com or find them on Instagram @mohawkhome. All Mohawk Home Rugs are made in the USA. Know Your Numbers A D E S I G N E R’ S G U I D E TO I N D US T RY S TA N DA R D S by Susie Robb @fromsusie

Walkways around furniture and walls in every room in your home should be a minimum of 36 inches. This means in your bedroom you should allow walkway clearance of three feet around your bed. In the kitchen you’ll need three feet around all sides of the island. The dining room is where things always get tight, but you truly need 36 inches around the table and chairs to allow room for seating. Creating ample walking space makes a room look larger and creates natural flow throughout.

On the Walls

Lone artwork should be hung with the center of the picture at eye level (usually 60” from the floor). If you’re hanging a group of photos or large artwork over a piece of furniture, aim for the bottom of the grouping/artwork to hang about 4-6 inches from the top of the furniture piece. Another great tip here is that what you hang above the furniture should be about 2/3 the width of the piece below it. For example, a 36” wide console table should have artwork that is 24” wide above it.

Photos By Cortney Hostin, Cortney Dani Photography

For the Television TVs should be hung at eye level, but you’ll need to keep in mind that viewers are typically seated while watching TV. Eye level for a seated viewer is about 42”. This means hanging the TV over the mantel isn’t the best idea unless you have an open concept floor plan and viewers might be standing in the kitchen. Always keep functionality in mind. 38 | moderntexasliving.com

From the Ceiling

Clear the Path

Not all rules are meant to be broken and good designers know where to toe the line. However, there are some industry standards that will prove very helpful to you if you know them and stick to them. This is especially true when it comes to the numbers on your tape measure. I’m outlining all the common measurements you’ll need when creating a space that is both beautiful and functional. After all, there is a method to the madness and I’ll tell you why these rules apply.

Chandeliers should hang 36 inches from the table top. This is also true for pendant lights in your kitchen. The reason for this is that you want to allow a clear line of sight for you and your guests. This will also give you plenty of room for tabletop displays and food service without a light fixture getting in the way. The 2/3 Artwork Rule can apply here too. Long dining room tables look balanced with a fixture that is 2/3 in proportion to it’s length.

Within Reach

Curtain rods should be hung 1/2 to 2/3 the distance between the top of the window and the ceiling. This will give the illusion of taller ceilings and balance the room. You’ll also want to hang them 6-10” wider than the window. This creates the appearance that the windows are bigger than they are. Drapery should be hemmed one inch longer to allow for the perfect “kiss” when it touches the floor.

Consider comfort in the bedroom by matching the height of your nightstand to the mattress top. This provides ease when reaching from the bed. End tables and side tables in the living room should be as tall as the adjacent arm chair height to allow for comfortable access to the table when seated. Your coffee table should be as tall as your sofa seat height. It should also be placed 18 inches from the furniture. This is the only exception to the walkway rule because your coffee table and sofa are viewed as a pair.

Take a Seat

Around the Windows

Make a mental note that you need 12 inches of clearance under a table for seating. This means that your dining chairs should have a seat height of about 18 inches for a standard 30 inch table. If you’ve ever wondered if you need counter stools or bar stools, the same math applies. Standard countertops are 36 inches and bar height countertops are 42 inches tall. Counter stools will provide a 24 inch seat height that is perfect for standard countertops. Bar stool seats are 30 inches high to accommodate the bar top.

These industry standards are here to help you create rooms that are aesthetically pleasing and function well. Your designs will be pleasing to the eye and create maximum comfort if you follow these guidelines. MODERN TEXAS LIVING | 39

A Labor of Love Restoring A Historic Home with Modern Details

By Jill Davis, Palmer Davis Design

I

n the quaint town of Marlin, Texas this absolute “gem” was in desperate need of some love, attention, and hard work to bring it back to life. It took some very dedicated homeowners with a unique vision to make it all happen and the end result is undeniably classic refinement at its best.

Bring In The Experts Jill and homeowners John and Kathy met for months putting the desires and dreams for their new home to paper and together they came up with a plan that would not only showcase the amazing architectural details but also incorporate a modern flair and a piece of their spirit in every space.

The Value of Adding Color From the moment you enter the glossed cherry red door you are engulfed in bright pops of color and pattern from every direction. Each room works together so seamlessly and effortlessly that you can’t help but smile with the pure happiness that surrounds you. In a world of white and grey, let a little color in! Color is the easiest and cheapest thing you can change in a space that will give so much in return. By keeping the original hardwoods throughout, it gives you a beautiful palette to do what you love on the walls. In the kitchen, repeating the wall color in other design elements—such as the custom, European tile rug inlay —helps to unify the space and up the “wow factor.”

The Next Chapter Some people get easily discouraged or overwhelmed when looking at the fine details in a space like lighting and hardware. These are the very things that can have a huge impact on the final result, and they don’t have to be overdone or complex. One beautiful light fixture in a room can transform that boring space into an eye-catching work of art. The same goes for hardware on cabinets and doors. They are like the gorgeous earrings and necklace to your black dress. 40 | moderntexasliving.com

WHAT IS BRANDING? Brand like a Boss By Ashley Slater @nibbyink

I

began my career in marketing when I was wandering through my wayward twenties. I had an interior design degree, but by way of the recession, I ended up working my way into real estate marketing. I was

surprised to discover a niche helping agents find their voice, and came to understand that practice to be formally known as personal branding. Now, I help all kinds of business owners, but specialize in creating unique branding for creatives. What is branding? Branding is perception. It’s the package of details and elements that communicate who you are and how your business stands out from the crowd. Branding is evident in the usual places – a business card, website, social media post or a mission statement, but it’s also apparent in the way you speak to a client, how you write a proposal or even something as simple as a gesture or handshake. Branding is ultimately how you distinguish yourself. A good brand is built with precision and intentionality. It’s not accidental, but the hard-won result of doing the work and answering all of the tough questions in the beginning. That work affords the ultimate gift to your business over time, and that reward is clarity! Clarity is the magic wand. This wand removes the gray fog of uncertainty. When it comes time to make those BIG decisions about where you’re going and what you’re doing, it allows you to easily say yes to the right opportunities (and simply let the wrong ones fall away). We overcomplicate the branding process all too often. There are too many distracting options when you're looking to brand. If you’re feeling stuck or just don’t seem to have the time, a second set of trained eyes can

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF  Are you using the same logo for all marketing materials?  Does your logo need to be updated?  Is your website up to date?  Does it showcase your current work?  Does it show your potential customer the type of work you want to do?  Is your Facebook/ Instagram up to date?  Are you posting a minimum of twice per week on social media?

make a world of difference in weeding out what is non-essential. A designers job is to distill large amounts of information into smaller pieces. We do this by listening first and then defining a concept. By sticking to one phrase as a centerpoint, you can use that as a guidepost to strategically steer your business like a ship that will carry you far into the future.

Q&A:

STEVE MURRAY, Outdoor Living In Texas

Q: DO YOU INSTALL CHRISTMAS LIGHTING? A: Along with outdoor lighting we install throughout the year, Christmas is another great time to showcase and bring attention to the details of your outdoor space. This time of the year we love to take Christmas decor to another level where we provide custom design services utilizing professional designers.

Steve Murray is no stranger to the Waco area. Right now, he and his company Outdoor Living in Texas, are working hard to make summer even more enjoyable for families around the Waco area. We sat down with him to tell us about some of the new exciting projects he's working on.

44 | moderntexasliving.com

Q: WHAT TYPES OF TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING IN OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES? A: With television makeover programs becomming a household staple, we are seeing a large influx of job requests for patios, pergolas, outdoor kitchens, pool houses and cabanas. Many people are relocating from the westcoast and it's great to work with families who want to bring some of their design trends with them to the great state of Texas.

Q: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PROJECTS THAT YOU HAVE COMPLETED THAT WE HAVE SEEN AROUND TOWN? A: Many of our projects are not easy to view because they are backyard

spaces or sometimes interior spaces. We're known around town for not only our outdoor space renovations, but creating an entirely new outdoor ambiance for homes and commercial projects. It's amazing the power of what a little landscaping combined with design and lighting can do to transform a space. Instant Pot Cheesecake John Kanell @preppykitchen

INGREDIENTS CRUST • 1/2 cup almonds finely chopped • 9 whole graham crackers finely crushed • 6 Tbsp unsalted butter melted • 2 Tbsp brown sugar • 1/4 tsp kosher salt 54 | moderntexasliving.com

CHEESECAKE • 16 oz. cream cheese softened • 2/3 cups granulated sugar • 2 large eggs • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract • 2 tsp lemon zest

TOPPING • 1 pint strawberries hulled and sliced • 2 Tbsp granulated sugar • 2 Tbsp Limoncello, optional • 1/2 cup sour cream, optional • Lemon zest optional

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350°F. 2. In a medium bowl, stir together almonds, crushed graham crackers, melted butter, brown sugar, and salt. 3. Line the bottom of a 7 to 8” springform pan with a disk of parchment paper. Firmly press crust mixture into the bottom of the pan using a measuring cup. 4. Bake crust until set and slightly browned, about 10 minutes. Let cool slightly. 5. In another medium bowl, beat cream cheese and sugar until smooth, about 1 minute. Add eggs, one at a time, beating at medium speed just until combined (do not overbeat). Stir in vanilla extract and lemon zest. 6. Spoon cream cheese mixture on top of crust, smoothing top. Tap cheesecake pan on the counter several times to remove any air bubbles. 7. Add 1 cup water to Instant Pot; place trivet in Instant Pot. Place springform pan inside Instant Pot.

8. Place top on Instant Pot; twist to seal and lock. Turn Steam Release Valve to “sealing.” Set Instant Pot to cook at High Pressure for 26 minutes. 9. After cooking is complete, let pressure release naturally (approximately 17 minutes). After that, manually release the pressure by turning the Steam Release Valve to “venting.” 10. Carefully open Instant Pot lid to avoid dripping condensation on top of cheesecake. Use trivet handles to remove cheesecake from Instant Pot. Let cool, then wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate overnight. 11. Thirty minutes before serving, stir together strawberries, sugar, and Limoncello, if using. Unwrap cheesecake. Remove from pan, and discard parchment paper. 12. Place cheesecake on a cake plate or pedestal. Top with sour cream. Serve with strawberries. Garnish with lemon zest, if desired.

What’s All the Hype About Celery Juice? By Katey McFarlan @KateyMcFarlan

Kathie Lee and Hoda chat about it, your neighbor on Facebook is posting it, and everyone is Googling it: Juicers. But why?

WHAT MAKES CELERY SPECIAL? I am not a nutritionist, so forgive me for my wording here, but essentially, celery contains luteolin and polyacetylenes – of which both work to stop inflammation in our bodies. From eczema to psoriasis to intestinal diseases, inflammation can be the root of many evils. In my research, I found that celery is one of the most powerful anti-inflammatory foods we can eat.

1

Incorporating celery juice into my life has been so simple. I’ve seen some incredible benefits, so I feel it does deserve some praise. I’ll break down the top 5 reasons that I love celery juice.

fights inflammation I shared above about luteolin and polyacetylenes, but luteolin also helps reduce DNA damage associated with inflammation. It’s great for people with arthritis {my mom has RA}, autoimmune issues, skin issues, and more.

heals the gut My mom also has gastroparesis from her RA. She started to drink this every morning and has seen a world of difference in her stomach issues. Essentially, celery juice starves things like viruses, yeast, mold and the “bad bacteria” in our body that can lead to intestinal issues. We want good bacteria to be there so we need room for it. Celery juice also flushes out toxins, which means it can act as a natural detox to some- however, that’s not the case with all.

3

2

neutralizes acidity Celery juice is highly alkaline so it can balance the pH system and neutralize acidity. We want this neutralized to promote healthy cell growth, to boost our immune systems, and to protect our organs.

MODERN TEXAS LIVING | 61

IN GOOD HEALTH

helps with energy Celery juice is a natural energy boost because it purifies the bloodstream. It can aid in energy throughout the day. If you drink it first thing in the morning, some claim it can help your body digest the rest of your meals easier. I started drinking celery juice over the holiday break and was amazed that I didn’t feel like I needed a nap at 2 p.m.

5

4

Good for your skin As mentioned above, the main reason I purchased a juicer was for my eczema. I kid you not, within a week of drinking it everyone was asking me if I had gotten a facial or if I had a new skincare product. I saw a huge reduction in my eczema within a week. To be totally honest, my legs were in so much pain from eczema that I was miserable at night. This has significantly calmed my eczema down and removed it in many places. I do still have a little bit left, but it hasn’t spread and I have missed a few days of juice here and there. They say you don’t even see skin benefits completely until a month in, so I’m thrilled with the results not using any of my prescriptions.

From purifying the bloodstream, to reducing bloat, to strengthening our bones and lowering blood pressure, there are so many more reasons this veggie is powerful.

How to Juice I take one bunch of organic celery and rinse it. Remember, celery is part of the dirty dozen, so buy it organic whenever possible. You don’t want to be juicing and ingesting those chemicals. I cut the ends, run it through my juicer and drink immediately. I use the Breville Compact 700-Watt Juice Extractor from Amazon.com. Some encourage you to drink it in the first 10 minutes of juicing and then wait 15-30 minutes before eating anything else. Celery juice can lower HCl acid levels to help heal digestive issues, so that’s why they say to wait a bit before you eat. I just follow that little rule simply because it makes the most sense for me. I’m never hungry those first few minutes of waking. I’ll drink this around 5, have my coffee 30 minutes after, and then enjoy breakfast

62 | moderntexasliving.com

with my daughter as a family when she wakes. That is truly just because I do not get hungry first thing. When I started, it took me a little bit to drink the juice, but I still saw major benefits. If you don’t have a juicer, you can chop the celery, blend it in your blender and then strain. We cannot wait to see you try it. Tag us @ModernTexasLiving on Instagram to show us your juice!

ALTERNATIVES TO INJECTABLES

M

edical aesthetics offer lasers and treatments that address the texture, appearance, and firmness of the skin. When a potential client comes in, we will look at all of the services we offer, and create a plan that is specific to the individual’s goal. Some would prefer not to do injectables, others prefer only injectables, and some do both. No matter the choice, it is a process requiring follow up treatments and cost. It is important to know that aesthetics is not plastic surgery.

Alternatives to injectables

Some of the alternatives to injectables that we offer target collagen. In our skin the middle layer is where collagen and other cells or proteins, like elastin, work together to create connective tissue that lets new skin cells grow. Collagen works to keep your skin looking fresh and young by promoting regeneration of the top layer and restoring dead skin cells. As we age, our bodies naturally produce less collagen, so by targeting the collagen we can improve our skin.

Eurothreads

Eurothreads are resorbable surgical sutures composed of biodegradable polymers. The treatment is minimally invasive and produces instant results. Polydioxanone (PDO) sutures are used for biomedical applications, particularly in cardiothoracic surgery because they are fully absorbed by hydrolysis within 4 to 6 months and do not create any scar tissue. The foreign body stimulates collagen synthesis and the skin structure created will hold for 12 to 15 months. Eurothreads are typically used for facelifts, but can also be used for brow lifts and neck lifts.

Microneedling

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that’s used to treat skin concerns via collagen production. Also known as collagen induction therapy, this treatment may help those looking to reduce the appearance of acne scars and stretch marks. It is also used in certain anti-aging procedures, such as eyelid surgery and sun spots.

Platelet-Rich-Plasma (PRP)

The PRP Rich Facial Rejuvenation is a procedure that combines platelet-rich-plasma (PRP) derived from your own blood to stimulate your stem cells, and microneedling for induction of collagen, and elastin to give you smoother and youngerlooking skin. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) can also be used as a treatment to accelerate healing in various areas of the body. We also use it to help restore hair growth. We offer consultations to see if we are the right fit for you and your aesthetic goals. All of the previously mentioned treatments can be combined or done in addition to injectables. These services offer a great synergistic effect that serves as the ultimate anti-aging defense. A great skin care routine is just as critical to antiaging as these treatments.

BEST SECRETS For Aging Skin By Houston Puryear Ward @Houstonpward

1

At Home

WATER It's recommended that you drink half of your body weight in ounces of water each day.

2

MAKEUP

As we age our skin changes. Therefore, our makeup will too. Find yourself a knowledgeable makeup artist who

can guide and teach you proper techniques for your age and lifestyle. Using the right products and application

makes a world of difference, and knowing how to do it yourself is even better!

3

CLEANSE In order to keep your skin happy, youthful, and radiant you have to wash it every single day of your life until forever. A simple cleanser will do just fine.

SUNSCREEN

4

The sun is so damaging to our skin, and causes us to age much faster if we don’t protect it. This one is my

favorite. Plus it has a tiny bit of a tint to it, which I like!

It has UVA/UVB protection, it’s lightweight, and your face will have a subtle glow after applying.

1

In the Salon

SKINCARE The best way to start is to meet with a facialist or esthetician who can assess your skin and help find the right products for you specifically.

2

BOTOX This truly has made the biggest difference in my appearance personally, and for my clients as well. It smooths out lines and wrinkles, lifts the skin, and gives you an overall more rested look. Make sure you find someone you trust to inject it, and don’t over do it. Start off slow and gradually. Add more as you feel the need. MODERN TEXAS LIVING | 69

FROM THE HEART

Behind the Doors

B

By Julie Hays

ehind the front doors of my home, I learned a lot. If you'd have told me, I could teach three kids, anchor the news from my kitchen and stay within those walls for months I'd have said you were crazy. But I did. COVID-19 left us all faced with tough and unexpected scenarios. Some lost jobs, business and sanity. For us and me being auto-immune compromised, life came to a standstill. I won't pretend the time was easy but I know the lessons I learned were good. Life for us was way too busy. And the irony? I didn't even notice before because I was too busy to. Over quarantine, life slowed down. I was forced to pause. I cooked. We played games. We rode bikes. We sat around the table together and we talked about our days as an entire family. Not with one at basketball another at softball and the stress of bouncing from one event to the next with to-go dinner in the car. I found out birthday parties don't have to cost a dime or take weeks of planning. A familiar face waving out the window in a drive-by parade would make for the most memorable. I learned teachers are even more under-appreciated than I thought. I learned kids are resilient and family really is everything. My husband, Sam, did his legal work from our garage sweating his way through many afternoons as he followed doctor's orders to try and better protect me.

"I WON' T PRETEND THE TIME WAS EASY BUT I KNOW THE LESSONS I LEARNED WERE GOOD." Sam grew a beard over quarantine for the first time ever and as life began to return to normal I begged him not to shave it. I think that's because it reminds me of the good things I learned. Like slowing down is needed. Focusing on family will never be a regret. And the best lessons in life really do come from home sweet home. ...if we take the time. And the things you can learn just behind your front doors will surprise you.

FROM THE HEART

Forgiveness

No One Said It’s Easy

I

struggle with forgiveness. There I said it. Am I the only one? There are situations in my life that are still painful and raw and I’m just not ready to forgive. Yes, I’m aware that forgiveness brings peace and happiness, but I cannot force it to happen. How do I make this easier? And, how can I teach forgiveness to my children when I’m struggling with it currently. I want my kids to learn forgiveness. I want them to know what it means to show love, compassion, and empathy even in the most unforgivable situations. I don’t want them to know a life of holding grudges or hanging onto resentment and pain. I recently attended a workshop called “Freedom and Grace through Forgiveness and Receiving.” It was put on by a good friend. When she contacted me about the workshop I thought, “Absolutely! I totally need this!” Two things struck me hard during this workshop. First was the question, “Do you feel hostile toward the whole idea of forgiveness?” “Yes.” I raise my hand. But then I recant, “Wait! I don’t feel hostile toward the whole idea of forgiveness. I feel hostile toward the idea of forgiving certain unforgivable people! That’s not the same, right?!”… It is. The second was during the explanation of the process of allowing forgiveness to fill the hole made by anger and despair. I was really struggling with this. Then she said one final phrase, “If you are not ready to forgive, then say to yourself, I forgive myself for not being ready to forgive.” Wow. That hit home. “I forgive myself for not being ready to forgive.” Isn’t this just as important? Forgiveness is a journey. There is anger, pain, resentment, denial, indifference, etc. You have to find love, healing, acceptance, and acknowledgement to eventually find forgiveness. Forgiveness is the ultimate action as a follower of Christ. How, though, does one forgive those that in every sense of the word DO NOT deserve it? This is what Christ does for us… I’m just not there yet, and that’s okay. For me, I’m trying to find peace and forgiveness in a situation that is continuous and ongoing. The exhaustion that comes with that can be very daunting. However, I’ve decided that I can teach my kids just as much about perseverance and the journey to forgiveness as I can about forgiveness itself. My children can watch me pursue healing, acceptance and acknowledgement, as well as watch

FROM THE HEART

A CRY FROM MOMS EVERYWHERE

“Why has my body betrayed me?!”

A

s moms, we tend to focus on everyone else’s needs except for our own. It’s just a natural instinct. All too often moms come to see me because their body begins to shut down and essentially “betray” them. “I have no energy.” “I can’t focus.” “I have to write everything down!” “I can’t seem to lose this last bit of baby weight!” “My hair is falling out!” “I need a cup of coffee at 3pm in order to finish the day.” Motherhood is truly an honor. But oftentimes it can leave us feeling exhausted and frustrated. In this article, I will go over four tips to gain your motherhood mojo back!

#1 OPTIMIZE SLEEP QUALITY “Yeah, right! I have a newborn and a toddler! What is sleep?!” Even if you are not able to get a solid night’s sleep, the quality of your sleep really matters. The most common causes of poor sleep quality are magnesium deficiency, food sensitivities, gut inflammation and adrenal fatigue. Addressing these by supplementing with magnesium, removing food triggers, and treating gut infections can make a world of difference in terms of sleep quality. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Sarah Campbell is a Physician Assistant who practices Functional Medicine in Waco, TX. She is also the creator of the Mom Brain Makeover program. She specializes in helping adults and children address the root cause of symptoms and chronic illness. To find out more about her practice and programs, visit www.sarahcampbellpa.com.

#2 ASSESS DIGESTION You can have the cleanest diet in the world, but if you are not properly absorbing nutrients, you will still feel terribly unwell. Women can eat impeccably, but still feel frustrated because they continue to suffer from headaches, joint pain, brain fog, fatigue, etc. A comprehensive stool test would be very helpful in pinpointing the issue. With this information, you can decide if addressing gut microbes would be beneficial to get you back on track.

#3 HORMONES & TOXICITY If the body is unable to get rid of toxic estrogen byproducts, then symptoms of weight gain, fatigue, mood imbalance, etc., will result. One way to help support hormone levels is to dispose of any beauty or household items that contain hormone disrupting chemicals like phthalates and parabens. EWG.org is a great resource for identifying toxic household products and clean alternatives.

#4 ADDRESS STRESS & ADRENALS Chronic stress is detrimental to our immune system and hormone levels. When cortisol levels are chronically high, it affects our blood sugar, blood pressure and anxiety levels, as well as our sleep patterns. Assessing vitamin D levels is essential to optimizing immune function. Taking time for ourselves is imperative to reduce stress and optimize adrenal function.

LOST CREEK GALLERY Quality Artwork in Historic Calvert

“Winter Wonderland” by Bill Barrick

“Aromas” by June Cates

L

ost Creek Gallery has made its home in the quaint little town of Calvert, Texas, 60 miles south of Waco. In this lovingly restored 1878 building you will find artwork of award-winning Texas artists. Representational art is their style. Step into the gallery: feel welcomed and comfortable while enjoying walls hung with fantastic original artwork and sculpture sitting elegantly on pedestals. Upon entering, visitors are pleasantly surprised at the quality of artwork in the gallery of small historic Calvert. “The gallery is truly a gem of Central Texas” says a recent guest. As a bonus, resident artist Cynthie Hanks or owner/artist June Cates may be seated at their easels creating another work of art. The little town has come alive with a fantastic coffee house, several new antique and gift shops, eateries, and two art galleries. Stop by the winery and relax with a glass of home-grown wine. The beautiful bed and breakfast nestled in a restored original Victorian home provides a lovely overnight visit. Calvert is a day trip worth taking.

ON THE ROAD

THINGS TO DO WALK DOWN ART DECO Miami has the highest concentration of Art Deco buildings in the world with South Beach home to over 800 Art Deco structures. You can book a walking tour to learn about the history of the art deco architecture.

TAKE PHOTOS ON MIAMI BEACH The colorful lifeguard towers on Miami beach make me so happy! Make sure you’ve packed water, sunscreen, and a towel before going to Miami Beach.

BIKE ESPAÑOLA WAY

WEEKEND GUIDE TO SOUTH BEACH

By Jane Ko @tasteofkoko

Española Way is a historic street between 14th and 16th street on Miami Beach that’ll make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Some of the restaurants are tourist traps, but I do love eating Cuban food at Havana 1957 while people watching and listening to live music.

WHERE TO EAT HAVANA 1957 The very first restaurant that I ate at when I visited Miami for the first time was Havana 1957, so it holds a special spot in my heart. A trip to Miami isn’t complete until you eat Cuban food, so I usually try to dine here every time I visit Miami. Order the chicken and rice with a coconut mojito.

BODEGA TAQUERIA Y TEQUILA This cute Mexican spot serves tacos, burritos, and tequila.

PUERTO SAGUA

LAS OLAS CAFE

If you get late-night cravings for Cuban food as I do, go to Puerto Sagua. It’s been open since 1962 and the food isn’t overpriced.

Another Cuban restaurant! If you see people standing on the sidewalk scarfing down croquettes and drinking cafecitos, you’re in the right spot.
