The power of gathering during the holidays is beautiful, as time stops during those special days and it is important to me to capture those moments. Lately, it has become evident to me how valuable it is to take mental photos not just of the picture-perfect moments with my family, but also the normal, everyday experiences that eventually become the most vivid memories. I want my children to experience a piece of the legacy of those who have come before them in each holiday season through our traditions, and while life is ever-changing, those memories will stand the test of time.

Like most families, our family truly looks forward to the holidays and our time to be together as a family. Each holiday has its own traditions and holds special memories for me and Mark, as well as our children, and now our grandchildren.Whatwehope to achieve now is a combination of blending the old with the new, honoring our family traditions while embracing and creating new ones as our family grows. We are fortunate there is something we can celebrate which bring us together every month—whether it’s a birthday or a holiday.

My parents were responsible for many of the traditions that we follow in our home now—some traditions began when my brother, sister, and I were children. Many have now been shared with our children and their spouses as well as our grandchildren. My parents lived their lives loving God, family, and friends in this order. They set the pattern for us to follow—

My dad (who my children called “Honey”) wrote poems or special notes to each of us at holidays. He always signed them with “E Love” or “eternal love” and that still has its place in every card, letter, email or text that we write to one another. My hope is that these special moments will be handed down from generation to generation and continued as a part of our heritage.

Things that my children remember about our holiday celebrations include: spending every holiday with the entire family; scavenger hunts with handwritten clues; cakes that

special decorations with homemade signs hung throughout the kitchen, and always the annual birthday picture displaying your age with your fingers and sometimes, this takes more than two hands. Each birthday is special and is an opportunity for us to be together and share the things that mean the most to us.

Birthdays have always had a special place in our family, with the birthday celebration encompassing a family party with the honoree’s favorite foods,

encouraging us to express our gratitude for all we have been given as we acknowledge the role that our Christian faith and love for God plays in our daily lives.

WALSHHOLLEY

Most significant of all, though, at any holiday or special occasion, is the time it offers us to come together as a family.

My mom reminded each of us as we became parents ourselves just how important it was to spend time with our children and, as she said, “M.A.M.” (make a memory) because these moments are life-long blessings to cherish for many years to come.

As our family has grown, we’ve

added new traditions, especially at Christmas. Those include special themes for each day of Christmas week. Santa has visited us at our home and all of us have worn matching Christmas pajamas on Christmas Eve. We’ve all sported ugly Christmas sweaters, awarding the most original. We have taken pictures with all of us wearing antlers or Rudolph’s red nose. We have game nights that might include Left-RightCenter (played for real money), WaHoo, and card games, board games, and Bunco. Our family enjoys music and our favorite Christmas songs fill our home throughout the holidays. We all love cooking together (even the men in the family) and eating delicious foods. Special appetizers always make an appearance as do special theme drinks. Each of our homes includes beautiful flower arrangements during the holidays, too—probably because my grandmother, D.D., was a florist and taught us to love fresh flowers and to enjoy the gifts of nature.

sometimes fall flat in the oven, but were still delicious; favorite “Mom meals” by request (cashew chicken, lasagna, chicken enchiladas and homemade pizza); trying out (sometimes, too ambitious) new recipes together; the Thanksgiving that I got a migraine and the kids had to prepare the food; going to the tree farm in Quitman for each family to select and then, cut down the tree for their own home; sharing hot cider while on the hayrides through the tree farm; decorating my parents’ home and their tree for the holidays; Poppie’s delicious cornbread dressing and her famous homemade macaroni and cheese; the Greenburg turkey; ornament exchanges between the cousins; reading special books together like the “Polar Express”; Easter baskets, Peeps and marshmallow eggs at Easter; fireworks and homemade ice cream for the Fourth of July.

happened since we were last together. If there is sadness or sorrow, we share that, too. We are all in this together and make one large, noisy, joyful, and grateful family—and we try each time we are together to take the time to truly be in each other’s presence. We are reminded to acknowledge those who are missing from our group and to include them in our prayers. We are encouraged again to thank God for our many blessings and to enjoy these special times together. That is as my mom and dad would have done. They were my heroes and lived as examples of the advice they shared with my family….Be kind. Always. You never know what someone else is going through. Be gentle. Have compassion. Default to empathy. If you can’t find any love in a situation, it’s a signal to be the love the situation needs. Love is the purest expression of this kindness. Spend as much time as you can with loved ones, and never say good-bye without saying I love you. Being a family means you are a part of something very wonderful. It means you will love and be loved for the rest of your life.

The update on each other’s lives, as well as sharing special things that have

iamond Kuykendall is a young adult who spent her senior year at The Cove. The Cove provides support to high school youth (14-18 years old) who are experiencing homelessness and housing instability. The Cove became a safe haven for Diamond during a difficult transition to a new area and housing situation. While attending The Cove, Diamond went on trips such as the Cameron Park Zoo, the Dr. Pepper Museum, and Hawaiian Falls. The staff members were there for her every step of the way, and Diamond explains that the Cove reminded her that she is worthy of unconditional love, even if she was unable to return the kindness shown to her.

did you know?

When The Cove connected Diamond with tutoring services, she was able to catch up on the learning needed to pass her classes and graduate successfully. Resources, connections, and opportunities like this allowed Diamond to jump-start adulthood and kept her coming back to The Cove post-graduation to update them on her life and progress. Lessons are learned and lives are changed at The Cove, and Diamond is just one person whose life has been transformed within its walls.

In 2019-20, a total of 111,411 youth in public schools were recorded as homeless, with over 15,000 having no parent or guardian present to help them. The Cove’s mission is to provide these youth in the Heart of Texas with a safe, nurturing environment where they can thrive and gain stability, hope, and connection. To do this, The Cove delivers evening programming, daytime school-based outreach, and a drop-in service. Cove youth have access to a daily hot meal, tutors, a washer and dryer, a shower, oneon-one support, transportation, and more. For each individual served by The Cove, staff work to ensure that they have a safe place to stay every night.

saiah 117 House is a nurturing environment for children to go when they are removed from their homes and are waiting to be placed in the foster care system. The house provides both physical necessities as well as a loving environment for the children. Walking alongside caseworkers to care for children allows them the time to find appropriate and safe placements for each child. The goal of the organization is to “lavishly love” on the children and reduce the trauma, changing the way their foster care journey begins.

Jennifer Villalpando and Janay Morgan are the Program Coordinators for the McLennan County location. They became connected with the Isaiah 117 House after Jennifer’s good friend introduced her to the organization. She encouraged Janay to volunteer, and before they knew it, the two were heading the program in McLennan County. Both Jennifer and Janay have experiences as foster parents in Waco and have seen firsthand the struggles, loss, and need that comes with the foster system, so there was no doubt in their minds that the McLennan community could benefit from this Theyorganization.hopetobreak

Anything helps, whether it is raising awareness, assisting with the construction of the home, providing items or financial support, becoming a volunteer, or participating in the organization’s events. Janay concludes by saying, “We pray that the organization continues to grow and spread throughout Texas as well. Every county needs an Isaiah 117 House to bridge the gap between removal time and find a wonderful placement for the children.”

Advocacy Center for Crime Victims and Children provides hope and healing to survivors of sexual assault and other violent crimes in six Central Texas counties through case management, unlimited counseling sessions and a 24/7 crisis hotline. Volunteer advocates answer the hotline after regular business hours and accompany sexual assault survivors to both Waco hospitals where they stay with that person during the entire exam. Sexual assault forensic examiners perform exams at both Waco hospitals. Forensic interviews and medical exams are provided to children under 18 that have been abused, if abuse is suspected or if they have witnessed a crime. Prevention and Education staff give presentations at schools, universities and other youth-based and community organizations to change attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that may lead to the perpetration of sexual violence. Prevention programming seeks to help youth develop socially and personally by facilitating discussions and activities on topics that encourage non-academic development such as empathy, respect, healthy relationships, emotions and conflict resolution. All services are free. The Advocacy Center is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization that relies on the charitable donations of others to serve the community. Without your help, they could not continue to bring hope and healing to victims of violent crimes. All donations stay here and are used by the Advocacy Center to directly impact the Central Texas area. Your donation can directly impact the hurting adults and children in this community by providing them with a safe and constructive environment that is the Advocacy Center for Crime Victims and Children. The most challenging aspect of her job is the increase in anxiety among students, and she works hard with them to develop positive self-talk, which can increase self-esteem and decrease anxiety, leading to an emotionally healthy child. Her main encouragement to parents at home would be to talk and listen to their kids. All children need a trusted adult in their life to share successes, struggles, fears, and questions without judgment. And the community should know how seriously educators take their jobs, because they know they are trusted with some of the most precious and important people in a family’s life. It is educators like Lindsey who truly take their job to heart that make a difference in the lives of children everywhere.

The Glaesmann home is filled with laughter, smiles, play, and dance, and they consider themselves rich, in love and support. He works each day to spread this wealth to each person he comes across in his day-to-day life, whether it be at home or in the classroom.

GLAESMANNCLINT

Clint Glaesmann is the principal of Castleman Creek Professional Development School. He was inspired to pursue this career throughout his life, specifically by the family of educators he comes from. Two key teachers in his life also instilled in him the desire to want to change students’ lives the way they changed his, showing him he was an important individual and not just a number in a classroom. Clint references a quote that changed his perspective, “As a teacher, your influence is limited to the size of your classroom, but as a teacher of teachers, your influence is limitless.” This led him to pursue the job of principal. He describes teaching as a profession that allows all other

professions to exist, and school as a place where magic is happening and lives are being transformed. Every day he is able to connect with kids and push them to do and achieve more than they ever thought possible. It is hard work, but there is not a day that goes by where Clint does not feel fulfilled by the work he does. His wife Joy and their two young children are at the center of his life. He extends this prioritization of his family into his work as an administrator, stressing to his staff that they should prioritize their family over their work. He works hard to support his teachers in being present for the big moments in their lives and their kids’ lives, saying that they should not have to sacrifice witnessing those

I like to serve my macaroon turkey with my favorite fall treats such as maple cookies, pumpkin Madeline’s, candy apples, and candied nuts.

by Kristen Sellentin, @kristensellentin

This Thanksgiving, make a turkey that doesn’t require hours of baking. To begin, set a brie cheese wheel on a board or plate. Add candy eyes on top. Next, cut a candy corn in half and add it onto the brie for the nose. I cut mine between the orange and yellow layers. Lastly, trim a piece of twizzler into a cobbler. Simply place macaroons around the brie to look like feathers.

ne of our favorite traditions is to mak a time capsule on New Year’s Eve. Each family member writes things they are thankful for or favorite memories from the year on small strips of paper and places it into the ornament. Add some glitter and put the cap on. Add number stickers for the year. Lastly

tie pretty yarn or ribbon onto the top for hanging on your tree. Each year when we’re decorating the tree we get out our little time capsules and pull out the papers reading them aloud together. It’s a fun trip down memory lane and something the whole family looks forward to each year.

Chief Victorian’s best advice for the Waco community is to “continue to work together to identify and solve problems within our communities.” The safety of Waco depends on the community and police partnering to solve crime. It is vital to share any information related to criminal activity.

WHAT’S IN HER BAG

While on duty, she carries her handgun, and off-duty, Chief Victorian can be seen sporting her classy handbag. We took a peek into her purse and found that her most-used items are her reading glasses, lip moisturizer, and her wallet. But among the wipes, lipstick, and earphones, she notes that her purse is full of items that can be used as weapons to help women protect themselves, like pens, keys, and tweezers.

Use the items on the most sensitive areas of the attacker, beginning with the eyes, and other places on the face, chest, and of course, the groin.” While it is never a bad idea to carry mace, be sure to use it downwind as to not immobilize yourself.

I did get to watch kindergarten graduation. I did get to walk them into school for the start of 3rd grade. I did get to wave from the car as my oldest left me behind for 6th grade.

by Julie Hays

Time.Stopping

With each new school year comes children starting kindergarten, some driving themselves to school for the first time, and others heading off to college leaving their parents empty nesters. The older I get, the more quickly time seems to pass. I got married at 27, started having babies at 30, and the last 11 years almost seem like they happened in months. I looked up and my newborns were walking, my toddlers were starting school, and my first kindergarten grad was marching into junior high. I am very familiar with the feeling of wanting time to stop. But, my perspective shifted when I developed a deep friendship with Lorna Hering, a local high school teacher who lost her son Rhett in a UTV accident near her driveway in 2015. He was only 15 years old.

She said something that made me pause, and I’ve never forgotten it. She expressed to me how much it frustrated her to hear parents complain how milestones were sad to experience, because Lorna would never have those milestone opportunities with her son. I can’t say what it’s like to walk in Lorna’s shoes, but I can say that what she said to me that day changed my perspective forever. Time marches on, no matter what, and it didn’t stop on December 28 when she lost her beloved middle child; however, the memories she’d be able to make with Rhett did. She will not get to watch Rhett go to prom, graduate from high school, or move off to college. Those big moments will never happen, so I always think of Rhett Hering when I feel sad about time. I may still cry, but those tears now tend to be tears of gratitude and thanksgiving that I was able to experience that moment with my child.

I have learned so much from Lorna about life, loss and hope. She has taken her shattered heart and helped create two nonprofits including The Rhett Revolution, to spread acts of kindness, and Archway of Hope, to assist those who have lost someone too early. Lorna has taken the difficulty she has been through to give others perspective, including me. Because of Lorna, today I’m thankful for graduations, new school years, maturity, changes, and the greatest gift I can ever have with my family - time.
