EDITORIAL Welcome to the 2nd annual Modart European Gallery Guide; our small effort to spotlight some of the people working to support the art that inspires us. From DIY spaces to established institutions, here is a look at some of the hard working organizations that have continually caught our attention over the last year. There are a lot of factors that link these spaces. You can find them in the art that they select or they way they make you comfortable taking your time as you take it in. There is a shared belief in the importance of a struggle to make time and space for art, to bring it towards the people, and this mirrors the struggle to create art and an emphasis on process as product pays the rent.

Dirty Johnny was in class when Mrs. Swedeson asked: ‘If 3 birds are sitting on a telephone wire and you throw a stone and hit one bird, how many birds are left?’ Johnny knew the answer and threw up his arm enthusiastically. ‘Yes Johnny?’ ‘If you throw a stone and hit 1 bird, the other 2 will fly away. No birds left on the wire.’

‘No Johnny, if you hit 1 bird then there are 2 birds left, but I like the way you think.’

At the end of the class Johnny raised his hand again. ‘I have a question Mrs. Swedeson. If 3 women are sitting on a park bench with ice cream cones, and 1 is sucking on the tip of the cone, another is licking it and the third one uses a technique mixing both licking and sucking, well, which 1 is married?’ Mrs. Swedeson took a second to collect herself and answered. ‘Its the 1 mixing techniques who is married Johnny.’ ‘Wrong. Its the one with the wedding ring, but I like the way you think.’ Perception is everything.

Le b ota n i qu e

No New Enemies is an international network of artists, activists, academics and passionate people, which began as an open minded collective who enjoyed collaborating on the streets for various reasons, one of which was to communicate with a broad and democratic public. The network aims to place art in public spaces, encourage the exploration of media aesthetics outside of institutional settings and to support young artists with various tools and opportunities. Value is placed on responsibility, risk and process, as opposed to end product, and questions to the citizen/consumer dialect are intentionally and constantly posed.

Plin Tub’ is a gallery and workshop that was founded in 2004 at the Chapelle railway station (Recyclart) in Brussels. The space for alternative and unconventional art was reinitiated by Elzo and Oréli in 2007 and has since then been showing a new exhibition every month ranging from drawings, silkscreen prints, paintings, installations, book publications to merchandise from many international artists.

SUBWALK combines a shop and an exhibition space at the border of the centre of Arnhem and walks on the edge of street culture and modern contemporary movements in art and design. The space acts as a bridge between the art in the street and the traditional gallery. To achieve this, SUBWALK starts the dialogue between creatives of different disciplines.

The Don isn’t in a hurry. He isn’t concerned with 15 seconds of fame or changing his attitude based on the ‘next big thing.’ The Don is a believer and for years he has been ringing bells and yelling ‘wake up.’ He began following trends in contemporary art, and friend to friend, artist to artist, his passion pushed him to begin curating shows, to produce a wonderful book called Izastikup (with Bo130 and Microbo) and eventually open his own gallery.

A mouthful of pure oxygen for minds free of prejudices and narrow views.

Temporary Love was born in 2006 in the heart of Rome. It all started from a simple yet utopian idea: combine the flamboyant world of art with the fashion system by making handbags designed by contemporary artists, one of a kind or in very limited editions. Exhibitions accompany the launch of each “Temporary Love” bag that has that precious and distinctive status, a work of art to wear and admire everyday.

A couple of years ago, studio14 was founded in Rome by art historian and curator Laura Lombardi, and since then has been promoting a new generation of artists from all over the world. Focusing on contemporary underground art, studio14 is a community of independent artists. Right now, studio14 is looking for a new space in Rome that will be the meeting point for people trying to change the rules of the cultural world and art market with their work and messages.

INOPERAbLE is a gallery/studio with the main goal of supporting and promoting graffiti and street art as a respectable art form in a fairly conservative city. The art form is often ignored or frowned upon like in most cities and INOPERAbLE is one of the few established places that attempts to bring more of the art to Vienna and promote the local artists outside of Austria. The art in the gallery is kept at fairly low prices so it remains available to the artists themselves. INOPERAbLE sets out to be a place where artists feel comfortable to come and hang out, meet each other and talk about projects. Olives, wine, cheese or noses in the air, are very very rarely to be seen. INOPERAbLE artists are Die Made, Nychos, Busk, Atzgerei, Holy Sin, Kryot, Zoe Byland, ABCK and C215. Some of the artists shown at INOPERAbLE include Blek Le Rat, Other, Royal, Flying Fortress, Saddo, Ghostpatrol, Acorn, SP-38, Graffiti Research Lab, Lastplak, Abbey McCulloch, Dyms, Keramik, Schnitzl, Sigla, Artiste Ouvrier, IS bach, Sich, Mosta, Christian Eisenberger, Labrona, Stefan Thompson, Jesse Suchman, Conrad Kofron, Katie Buckner, Adam Turman, Dwitt, Bongout, Crosshair, Tanxx, Todd Seelie, Tika, M8, Lelo, XOOOOX, DBS, DNM and many, many more.
