Why Mothers Volunteer

“HOW could you possibly have time to volunteer for community work when you have a child?” The simple answer to that question is, “I am a mother.” Enough said. While it’s true that most mothers now have literally more on their plate because getting decent house help is hard to get, volunteering remains strong in a mother’s heart.

And we’re not just talking about volunteering for their child’s school activities. These are community soup kitchens, tree planting, coastal cleanups, and all other activities that’s what raises eyebrows, especially in my case.

Lately, I found myself being pressured to play the role of the ultimate stay-at-home mom who should devote every second of my waking life to making sure that my toddler hits her developmental milestones. “Never miss this stage because you will regret it,” I was told. While I certainly don’t want to miss out on moments with my child, I believe it’s also detrimental to my maternal health to be obsessed with motherhood. And that is why I vol-

Contrary to what other people may think that volunteering is an escape from the mundaneness of motherhood, mommy volunteers like me actually do this because we want to honor our calling as mothers.

I really want to lead by example for my child. I believe that volunteering will teach my child about empathy, kindness, and the value of service. By volunteering, I can demonstrate these principles in action, showing her that making a difference in the lives of others is a core part of being a responsible and compassionate human being.

Before I became a mother, I was an individual with a completely formed set of personal values. I’ve had these beliefs far longer than I have had my child and this drives me to contribute to causes I am passionate about. Volunteering is a way to align my actions with these values, whether it be supporting education, social justice, environmental sustainability, or community development. Volunteering provides me with a tangible means to live out my convictions and create positive change.

One of the rude awakenings that I encountered with motherhood was the immense loneliness that came with it. Volunteering allowed me to connect with the community. As a mother, I do have a vested interest in the well-being of the society we live in, as it directly impacts my family life. Not a lot of people realize that. Volunteering has allowed me to establish connections and build networks

FORTY-SOMETHING FIRST-TIME MOM

How can volunteering be an escape from motherhood when it’s really about creating a better world for our children? As mothers, we have an inherent desire to create a better future for our kids. We simply can’t live in a bubble now and then make them inherit a broken world. That thought scares me a lot. By volunteering, I can actively contribute to building stronger communities, addressing social issues, and leaving a positive legacy for my child and future generations.

I was so happy to meet many other mothers in the volunteer community of iVolunteer Philippines. And they echo everything that I have said in this piece. We volunteer as mother and wife, employee, and even sister, daughter, and friend, we cannot afford to run on empty.

with like-minded individuals, community leaders, and organizations, and to work collaboratively towards common and theirs.

One of the lowest points of my motherhood journey was being forced to quit my job because there was just no structural support for wannabe working mothers like me. So, I have this gnawing need for personal growth and to solve the social issue that put me in this predicament. Sure, we already have demanding roles as primary caregivers and some of us still have a job to juggle, but selfactualization happens oftentimes outside of the realms of motherhood and career. And this self-actualization is a rich source of fuel for our love tanks that helps us do our roles better at home and at work.

Mothers often feel irrelevant and invisible. I didn’t know that until it happened to me. And volunteering offered an opportunity to pursue my personal interests, develop new skills, and explore passions beyond the roles that were expected of me. When your child throws a tantrum that you can’t diffuse or becomes the pickiest of all picky eaters, volunteering can provide a sense of accomplishment amidst all that frustration; boosting your overall well-being and self-esteem. So is it an escape from motherhood? I’d like to think, it’s just a break from the craziness of motherhood. It is a form of self-care, paradoxically. And we all deserve that.

The petitioners resorted to bringing the case to the Supreme Court last March after the Court of Appeals decided against the issuance of TRO early this year.

In a statement sent to the media, Atty. In particular, Batacan pointed out the glaring lack of a valid Protected Area Management Board clearance from the PAMB explicitly mandated by Republic Act (R.A.) No. 7586 or the National Integrated Protected Areas System

In a statement over the weekend, the DOF said the total collection last year was higher by 26.3 percent than PHP160.5 billion revenue in 2021.
