October 2013

Chair’s Message Autumn has certainly arrived and appears so has a ‘winning streak’ for the first and seconds. The thirds have had some tough opponents and have certainly held their own which is no mean feat when managing with an ever changing side. Keep your heads up boys. A great run of wins - lets keep it up!

Millwall Blazers

Millwall Vs Millhill 14th September

Want to look as dashing as this trio?

Millwall Blazers, waistcoats, dresses... We have received a number of requests recently regarding material for Club Blazers and dresses. We do have some in stock however Paul Fisher (merchandise) needs to assess if we need to order more. If you are interested in getting a blazer etc. made please could you email Paul in order to register your interest. Paul will be looking into the feasibility of getting a ‘deal’ with a local tailor. Maybe with a ‘measuring-up’ night at the club? If you would be interested in this please could you indicate as such on the email. paulfisher@millwallrugby.com

Go on treat yourself. As indicated by the quote on the cover the physios have got an eye for a blazer!!

It’s your club

There is a real buzz around the rugby club at the moment. Many new faces have joined us this season and have quickly settled in to the ‘We play hard on AND off the pitch’ attitude that has long been upheld at Millwall. Success is beginning to be reaped on the pitch and ‘The Committee’ are determined to ensure that you, the members, continue to receive the support, facilities and resources that you and the rugby club need going forward. The Committee is here to represent you and to drive the club forward in the direction that you want. In order to support this aim The Committee have invited the RFU (Neil Sweeney) to run a ‘Development Planning’ workshop on Saturday 26th October, at the Clubhouse from 10am to 12pm. We need your views on where you want the club to be in 1,2,3 years time and your suggestions on what we need to do to get there. There is a Facebook event for this, please 'join' the event if you can make it. The Committee acknowledges that The Club faces a number of barriers and challenges, many of which are unique to Millwall. We need your perspective on what these are and how we might all work together in overcoming them. A start was made in collating views through the online survey and a ‘BIG THANK YOU’ to those who were able to find the time to complete this. The outcomes from this survey will form the starting point for the discussions on Saturday 26th October. It is important that as many members attend as possible. It is crucial that you use this opportunity to have your say and support Millwall Rugby Club moving forward. As a small incentive and thank you for attending, bacon butties and sausage rolls will be provided. Please encourage as many members and players as you can to attend. I look forward to seeing you all there.

Millwall Matches Commentary Saturday 21st September Fantastic results this weekend with the firsts beating Brightlingsea 21-7 with 14 men to go top of the league and the Llamas winning 35-15 at home. Unfortunately we weren't able to fulfil the third team game as there weren't enough bodies.

Winning Streak continues Saturday 28th September Another 100% weekend this weekend with the thirds rolling over Old Brents 61-7 at home in the only game, and I hear that tonights backs session was useful so good work all around. We have a full calendar of games this weekend with all three teams in action, and with a strong past couple of weeks, let's keep this momentum going throughout the season.

… and continues Saturday 5th October A win for the firsts 17-8 against old adversaries May and Baker who disappointingly went off in a huff! This was matched by yet another win for the seconds 25-7 against Wanstead at Hackney Marshes. Go Llamas!

Sunday 6th October Venus kicked off their league campaign on Millwall Park against Stanford Le Hope. They were well supported by spectators and the background music from the Oktoberfest gave for a jovial atmosphere that was maintained throughout. Final score 29-42.

… and continues Saturday 12th October Firsts win 46-0 away at Thames with three tries a piece from Fly-half George Conway and Outside Centre Phil Whittikar. The clean sheet for the Llamas continues as they took a 39-0 win at home against Thurrock Cubs. (Second Team Manager Sophie now matching Mrs Beeech’s winning 3 game streak when she was manager). Commiserations to the thirds who went down 27-10 to Burnham on Crouch (away). Sunday 13th October Unfortunately Venus found themselves outnumbered again this week. Playing 10 against 14, away to East London. They came away with a hard fought 61-7 loss.

Poppy Appeal Please put your name down on the list at the bar (or email paulfisher@millwallrugby.com) to give just 2 hours of your lives to help support those who have given so much more (and some have given their lives). This is a prime opportunity to show our community we support them. It involves handing out poppies at Canary Wharf station (in Millwall colours) for just 2 hours of your life between 5 & 7pm on 1 weekday evening between 28th Oct and 8th Nov. As a club we raised over ÂŁ1500 for this worthy cause last year - LETS GO TO WORK and smash this target!!

Appeal for Calendar Models Do you have a 'Blue Steel' look, or are you more of a Right Said Fred "do your little turn on the catwalk" kind of person?? If so.... Millwall needs you!! We are planning to create 'his' and 'hers' 'tastefully nude' versions of a Millwall Rugby Club calendar with balls and tackle pads strategically placed. We are hoping that this highly sought after calendar will be in all good (adult) bookshops in time for Christmas post to our ex-pat friends and families/enemies. The date for this photo-shoot is looking like Sunday 3rd November at the clubhouse - so keep this date clear in your diaries. We have 1 'willing' male and 1 'willing' female photographer so you don't need to be bashful... To register your interest for this, please let Gareth H know on gareth@millwallrugby.com so we can gauge balance/interest.
