1943 VICKERS SUPERMARINE SPITFIRE Mk IXe The graceful style of the British Spitfire was originally designed by Reginald J. Mitchell. The first prototype was built by Vickers Supermarine in 1936. In 1940, as WII commenced in the skies of England, Spitfires and Hawker Hurricanes successfully protected the country from the German Luftwaffe. The museum’s Spitfire Mk IXe, production number MJ730, was built in 1943 at the Catle Bromwich factory. It was first test flown by Alex Henshaw, the factory’s chief test pilot, on December 10, 1943. It served in North Africa, Italy and Greece during the war. Following the war, it served in the Italian Air Force and in Israel.
