taught in elementary school as a founding principle o[ our democracy. People also seem to leel a personai or direct connection with the necessity of

insuring that innocent people do not spend time in jail for crimes they did not commit and that guilty people are behind bars to protect everyone.

The same readv sense oJ PttrPose' crcn in thc hcst ()l cc()nomic timc>. may not be eviclent r'vhen a trial 1uc1ge announces a cir.'il case. There are a variety of reasons fbr this, includlng

Section News & Events

Appellate Section Hosts Wine Er Cheese Reception Brendon lshikawa, 2009 Appellate Chair Photos by Ken Rabiroff, courtesy of the Appellate Section he Appellate Section's lilth annual Wine & Cheese receplion took place on December 2, 2009. The Court of Appeal graciously allowed us to holcl the event in rls courtroom upon confirming ihat the evenl- was not Whine and Pleas! (The justices get enough of that on regular basis in the same location.) Instead, the annual event brings together appellate attorneys, Court of Appeal justices and staff, and a healthy dose of Superlor Court 3udges. In addition to fosterlng a bench/bar dlscussion, it provicles the proper remedy for advocates who harre encounl-ered a hot bench at oral argument and thought to themselves, "I need a drink!"

I pronounce the fifth jteration of this event 1-o have been the best to date -- and not iust because it marked my last day

of my term as President of the Appellale Section. ("1 need a drinkl") We had the good fortune to l-aste several 1ove1y

wines from our loca1 midtown Sacramento wrnery: Revolution Wines. Perhaps most importantly, we had the benefit of excellent preparations by Shama Mesiwala and Court of Appeal extern Lauren Layne. I also want to thank Clerk/Administrator Deena Fawcett for helping us wrth the numerous details that go into hosting such an event. Finally, I want to welcome our new Appellate Section officers: Brendan Begley (President), Stephanie Finelli (Vice President), Shama Mesiwala (treasurer), and Kelly

Martinez (Secretary). There being no position for PresidentEmerltus, lve gladly accepted the position of Appellate Section mascot. Thank you for a greaL year! \
