NATIONAL CHILD PASSE

JIM WEICHERDING September is National Child Passenger Safety Month (NCPSM) every year. This year, National Child Passenger Safety Week is September 20th through the 26th, 2020, posted by the United States Department Of Transportation located in Washington, DC. National Car Seat Check Up Day is Saturday, September 26th, across the USA. There will more than likely not be many Car Seat Check Ups taking place this year due to the corona virus but that doesn’t mean that keeping kids safer in the family vehicles is not as important as it was before. Kids are still traveling in family cars and trucks and reminding families about the importance of using properly installed car seats and booster seats is still a priority. This pandemic does not change other safety concerns regarding kids, teens and adults in vehicles. Vehicle crashes are still the number one cause of childhood deaths in this country and their safety is very important regardless of other situations we are dealing with as a nation. I still attend as many area car shows, cruise nights and 10| Motorhead Magazine - September 2020

SENGER SAFETY MONTH community events with my giant Buckleupallofus balloon showcase and pass out as many traďŹƒc safety and child passenger safety coloring posters, coloring books, stickers and fridge magnets that I can to kids and families, as long as strict Covid-19 guidelines for safety are met at these venues. Safety is still safety. Period. We may only have a couple more months for these outdoor events and I hope everyone can take advantage of these venues to help support community businesses and restaurants as long as the weather allows. I appear with my Bucky giant balloon and distribute safety publications, products and literature at grade schools, day cares, libraries and community centers throughout the year. NCPSM is a crucial month for heightened child passenger safety awareness and education. We all need to make sure that kids are properly restrained in car seats, booster seats and buckled up for safety not only during a focus month, but all year long as well. Remember, backseats are safer for kids than front seats and make sure they are safely secured before you travel on our roadways. See you next year at many more events and car shows in your own community. Have a safe and healthy rest of the year everyone!

TOM McCARTHY When in the future, motor sports fans look back on the year 2020, it will be long remembered how the sport of drag racing changed drastically due to the presence of the COVID-19 virus, which emerged in February of that year. By March of 2020, everything began shutting down for eight to ten weeks

and the sport of drag racing, like all professional sports, ground to a sudden halt. All the existing racing schedules were torn up and it was close to six months before new schedules and racing resumed. From March through June, racing was almost nonexistent. Then came Donald “Duck” Long, the Impresario of Radial Tire car racing with two new races he was de-termined to host to help keep drag racing alive in 2020. Donald normally is the host of two highly suc-cessful drag radial races, “Lights Out” every February and “No Mercy” every October, which he’s host-ed for over a decade now. His “Sweet-16” for the sixteen quickest Radial Vs The World cars is now an annual early year event, but he barely got that in when the virus stopped all professional sporting events cold by end of March 2020. In a response to this, Duck as he known by the loyal faithful, responded by creating two new events to add to 2020, upping his racing calendar to five events for the year. By adding the “Covid-8” on May 21-23 and the “Magic-8” on July 23-25, Donald Long showed he was determined to help keep drag racing alive and keep drag radial tire racing in the lime-light. Racers now had something to look forward to. His Magic -8 event on July 23-25, 2020, at Orlando Speed World in Florida, was completed without spectators, but it was run with a handful of the quickest and fastest door cars in the world. It was a small but stout field of ass kickers who put up numbers that made the moderates blush. In the Radial Vs the World category of competition; Stevie Jackson was the #1 qualifier with a stunning 3.582 followed

closely by Marcus Birt’s 3.589. The bump spot was a 3.99 held by NOS stand out Norm Bryson. Jackson took out Bryson 3.65 to 3.80 in E-1, then eliminated Jamie Hancock on a hole-shot in E-2, to match up with the Axe-Man, Marcus Birt, during the finals. It was a hell of a race to cap off the event, Jackson bested Birt 3.55 to 3.57, for a hard fought victory. In Pro 275 category racing, Chris Daniel was the #1 qualifier with an excellent 3.82 @ 193 MPH blast and the bump spot was a 3.95, held by Marty Stinnett, for this very tight field. #2 qualifier Eric Dillard (3.84) was the man of the hour on race day by eliminating Marty Stinnett in E-1 (3.84-3.92), then he trailered James Miron, on his way to meet Tommy Rainer, in the final round. Eric defeated Tommy with a 3.86 @ 193.8 MPH.

qualified field in each of the three classes, but the performance was world class and that’s a trait of a Donald Long hosted events. Donald Duck Long has hosted more world and track rec-ord runs performed by radial tire racers than any other race promoter in drag racing. Why does he do this one may ask? The answer is simple, he LOVES drag

The third and final class of racing at the Magic-8 was the very popular X-275 class with Blake Copson driving for Manny Buginga and he posted a 4.268 @ 165 MPH for the #1 qualifier spot, just ahead of Charles Hull’s 4.30 @ 165. During eliminations, Blake eliminated Roger

Racepack and Dean Marinis on his way to the finals to set-tle up with Charley Hull. Copson, driving the Manny Buginga car, tuned by Jamie Miller and Steve Petty of Pro-Line Racing unleashed a furious 4.25 to Hull’s troubled 5.61, to win the Magic-8 in X-275 class. Overall, Donald Long put out $35,000 of his cash, for winnings, directly to the racers. He also spent a tidy sum additionally on jackets and unique trophies for the winning teams. The Magic-8 was a small and elite eight car

racing, especially radial tire based competition and he wants to see the sport and the racers thrive, grow and prosper. Later this year, in Ducktober, at South Georgia Motorsports Park, from the 9th of October through October 11th, Duck’s annual Sweet 16 event will be held concurrently with his No Mercy event happening right after it from October 15-18. The Ten days of Ducktober will send the worlds fastest and quickest drag radial cars into a tire smoking frenzy as the heartbeat of drag racing continues – drag radial style.

THIS CAR IS UNDER ATTACK. THE WATER IN YOUR COOLANT IS RUTHLESS.

Fight boilover and corrosion with the only waterless coolant. The water in your coolant is your engine’s worst enemy. It lurks in your engine’s cooling system, waiting to boil, expand and build pressure. Causing boilover, bursting hoses and corroding your engine’s components. That’s why Evans is 100% waterless.

UNDERCOATING: What is it and why do I need it? By JOSHUA KLEIN Simply put undercoating is a sacrificial layer under a vehicle to prevent rust and rot. There are different types of undercoatings from hard paints to oils. They are all meant to protect, they all have pros and cons, but it is up to you to determine what style will be best for your needs. First we will cover new vehicles and ways to protect them. Remember, being proactive is al-ways better than being reactive! If your vehicle is older and already showing some signs of rust, don’t worry - it isn’t too late and we will cover that later. We are Northeast Rustproofing. Established in 2019 in the effort to prevent rust and rot on vehicles. With over 25 years’ experience in the automotive service industry we have seen the introduction of different road hazard chemicals on the roadways and have seen their effects. We have fixed countless frames and rotted suspension components in our Auto Fabrication shop and looked for a way to help prevent this. After doing extensive research and trying different products, we finally started to offer what we feel are the best products for fighting the battle against rust. The NHOU© brand of products. Most vehicles are built so well that with normal maintenance they may see 300,000 miles or more nowadays. With the average miles driven per year at 13,500 that is 22.2 years of driving! Sadly, after just a few years on New England roads, rust has already started. Soon after the rust turns to rot, and once that happens the vehicle becomes unsafe.

sand down any rust spots that may form and paint those areas. That does work and it will extend the service life of your vehicle. The drawback is that it is very time consuming and it is very hard to get any protection into the in-ternal areas with a traditional paint. We have also seen the use of rubberized undercoatings. Those provide the sacrificial barrier like we mentioned but once a nick or crack forms it gives a chance for moisture/salt to get un-derneath and start eating away at the steel your vehicle is made from. All of this happens with-out you being aware of it. Rubberized undercoating much like paint is very hard to ensure full coverage inside any internal areas. We looked long and hard before choosing the system that we wanted to implement. What sets NHOU© apart from the other brands and applications is its ability to creep and move into the exact places where the salt brine festers and starts trouble but is mostly inaccessible by other forms of protection. NHOU© implements a 2-stage application for New vehicles. The Boss Wax® system uses an Environmentally friendly, water based, semi self-healing rust preventative on the external surfaces. The Boss Wax® dries to a nice semi-gloss black finish to provide that sacrificial layer needed to prevent moisture and salt getting to the bare steel. The second stage of the system utilizes NHOU© clear oil that gets misted into all of the internal cavities of the vehicle. This includes but is not limited to frames, rockers, doors, hoods, internal fenders, tailgates, hatches, trunks etc. NHOU© is a mineral oil based undercoating so it continues to creep and provide protection, yet is environmentally friendly and non-toxic.

When the roads were covered in sand for the winter, we didn’t see much of a problem with the rot we experience today. Currently most municipalities use a SALT BRINE solution. This is very harmful because it is a liquefied salt solution that is able to get into the cracks and crevic-es of body panels, frames and suspension components. Most people use the car wash as their rust prevention maintenance plan. This keeps the outside of your vehicle looking nice (also add-ing lots of little microscopic scratches that add up to a dull finish, but we are talking about un-dercoating, not paint protection here) but the bottom of the vehicle is only getting cleaned where the water can spray. It’s not getting inside with pressure where the salt brine has accu-mulated, and in most cases the salt brine has such an adhesive property that just high pressure water isn’t enough. Combine this with the fact that most car washes recycle their water and you just gave your vehicle a high-pressure salt bath!

The key to this system is that for it to work correctly, it needs to be present. Over time the oil coating on the internal cavities will diminish and the outer wax may get damaged from road hazards or vehicle lifts from service work. This is where your maintenance plan comes in. A biannual maintenance is recommended to touch up the outer wax areas that may have gotten disturbed past the point of the self-healing and to re-oil all of the internal cavities. Just like you change your oil and top off the fluids, regular maintenance is crucial to the longevity of your vehicle and its value.

What can I do to prevent this? What you need is to develop a comprehensive rust prevention maintenance program. You change your oil, service your brakes, suspension, tune ups all to gain great life and reliability out of your vehicle. Does that help if after a few years you have rust and rot? Once it starts it is very hard and expensive to get rid of.

There are many ways to accomplish this. We have seen people that use a garden hose, get un-der their vehicle and wash out all the internal cavities,

We hope this helps you decide what Undercoating method may best suit you on your new ve-hicle. Like mentioned above, we will talk about the ways to protect your used vehicle in future articles. Stay tuned, go to our website, or give us a call. We’re happy to answer any questions you may have!

My First Fox-Body Xander’s 1990 Lincoln Mark VII LSC

By XANDER YESSAIAN Yes Motorheads, you read that right, at 3 ½ years old I have just acquired my first full sized automobile and believe it or not, it’s a real nice piece of machin-ery!! The vehicle I’m referring to is my 1990 Lincoln Mark VII LSC, a variation of Ford’s Fox-Body platform with its own particular style that immediately became a crowd favorite. My LSC came from an elderly couple that garaged it almost all of its life and with only 90k original miles it runs strong and drives like you’re on a cloud, thanks to the functioning airbag suspension that these cars featured. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a 30-yearold car and needs a little TLC but that’s where my cousins Tyler and Dan Christopher at Southern NH Undercar come in. The car has some outstanding features, that were clearly way ahead of their time, including fourwheel disk brakes, four-wheel ABS, and keyless entry. Of course, my Dad was excited when he opened the truck and found the original Marchal foglamps and the factory BBS wheels that are currently out being re-stored and painted black.

Performance wise, the car features the 225hp high output 5.0-liter engine from the Mustangs of that day backed by a four-speed automatic with overdrive. Ford’s stout 8.8 rear end hides out back, with a set of 3.27 gears

that pair up to the optional Traction loc differential to get the car moving. In its bone-stock form, the LSC had no problem smoking the old set of tires that we were tossing out an-yway. But if you know my Dad, Motorhead writer Ed Yessaian, you know that this car was not going to be left alone for very long. The first procedures that the LSC is scheduled for is basic front to back rou-tine maintenance. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and changing of every single fluid. The car did need a rear brake line but in addition to that my Dad is going to replace all the pads, rotors, and calipers to ensure safe operation while we’re hitting Cruise Nights for my new Motorhead section “Cruisin’ with Xander”. In the near future an h-pipe will replace the restrictive mid-pipe with exhaust fumes singing their fi-nal tune through a set of Flowmaster mufflers. At some point a set of 3.73 gears will make their way into the rear end. Cosmetically, the car is in overall decent shape with the only exception be-ing a damaged driver’s door. Chances are that once my Dad gets involved in that it will turn into a major ordeal but there was mention of the car ending up Sonic Blue from the 2003 SVT Cobra. At this point the car has been dropped off at Southern NH Undercar in Hampstead, NH for an overall inspection and laundry list of things it might need. Stay tuned as we move forward with this project be-cause with so much used Mustang stuff out there for these cars you never know how far my Dad will take this. You heard it here first- Xander Y- OUT!!! CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

SHEREDA’S STARSKY & By ROB MAY and MELISSA SHEREDA S is for September, Seventies, Shereda, and of course Starsky & Hutch! This special 1976 Ford Gran Torino Starsky & Hutch Edition , owned by Melissa and Ray Shereda, makes its home in Riverton, IL. Initially known to Rob May via the Mercury Cougar world, Melissa had a 1968 Cougar received from her Mom a few years after she was married. “We stripped that car down to an empty shell and redid everything on it. Sadly, after putting 9,000 miles on it in two years, it was totaled. Another 1968 Cougar was found, and we went through the whole process again, using the drivetrain and interior from the first Cat.” Their latest addition is a 1969 Mercury Colony Park station wagon with 35,000 original miles. Here is their Torino story: Melissa loved the Starsky & Hutch show and the car. “My goal in life was to own a Starsky Torino and a General Lee Charger when I grew up. After missing out on the chance to have the “Striped Tomato” as my first car, I ended up with other cars over the years but never forgot about the Starsky car. In 2005, I had been without a “play car” for about 10 years and started searching the internet for whatever I could get a good deal on. That proved to be too vague, so I decided to narrow my search to one vehicle, and the Torino seemed like a good idea. I finally found one on eBay that was only a few hours away and in my price range.” Melissa went to go look at it, and she couldn’t believe it was the same car in the pictures as the paint was really faded. “The car had also been repainted at some point in its life and not only was the stripe done wrong, it was not even the same on both sides of the car.” A 400 engine and FMX transmission had replaced the original 351 Windsor/ C4 combination, and all A/C 26| Motorhead Magazine - September 2020

components had been removed including the box on the firewall. “Overall, it was a solid car, so I made the seller an offer, but he wanted to let the auction run its course. A couple of days later, the auction was ended early. I was disappointed but resisted the urge to be angry with the seller and just emailed him for an explanation of what happened. He said he was made ‘an offer he couldn’t refuse’ to cancel the auction and sell outright. I wished him luck with the sale and turned my attention elsewhere. Not finding any other suitable Torino’s for sale, I was looking through the local trader and found a 1972 Firebird 350 with a four-speed for sale for about the same money. After thinking it over for a couple of days, I was about to pull the trigger when the Torino seller contacted me and offered me the car. Apparently after he Continued Next Page

drove it two hours to make the deal, the buyer tried to get him to take ½ of the agreed price rather than take the car back home. He had already had somebody else offer him what he wanted for it, but he liked me better, so if I matched the offer the car was mine! Two days later, on July 20, 2006, I was back with cash in hand. I thought about trying to knock him down a couple hundred dollars but decided against it. About to leave, he asked us to wait, and brought about $400 worth of spare parts out of his basement and threw them in for free.” The 165-mile trip home was made on a sweltering, 90-degree day with no taillights, brake lights, nor turn signals; and the only gauge that worked was the tachometer. The dome light was missing. “That wasn’t a problem until we were at highway speed with both windows down and the air pushed into the opening in the headliner and

Y & HUTCH TORINO ripped it loose from the bows. This resulted in the headliner pushing down on my head so hard that I had to drive with one hand holding it up until I could pull off at a truck stop. We bought some safety pins and pinned the material back up to the bows to make the rest of the trip.” At home they took pictures of it, and just like the eBay ad, it looked much better in the pictures than it did in person. “I heard a lot of comments about the car being orange over the next few years.” Cleaning inside and out was the first thing done. The “orange” paint was buffed out to shine it up a little. This was followed by new carpet and reupholstering the front seats. Next, the aftermarket steering wheel was replaced with an original one, and repairs were done to make all the lights and gauges functional. Ray continues the story: “In 2007, Melissa and I began our relationship, and she was totally on board with the car life. In December 2009, we started a drivetrain swap/front suspension rebuild that was finished in April 2010. We stripped the front suspension down to the frame rails and replaced/refurbished everything. I knew I wanted to get the car repainted someday; my wife decided it was someday! In 2011, the car was stripped down to bare metal. After some minor rust and dent repair, it was repainted in the factory colors of 2B Bright Red and 9C Wimbledon White. Just like the factory paint job, the white was painted first and then the stripe was masked off using a template made from our friend Pat Park’s car which still had the factory paint. In 2012, Pat got tired of listening to me complaining about electrical problems and brought a wiring harness out of his parts stash. He rewired the entire car in just a couple of hours. After a 3-and-a-half-hour drive home from a car show in 100-degree heat, we decided it was time to get the factory air working. It required three attempts before we identified all the parts that needed to be replaced, and then the compressor gave out a few months later so we had to get the system charged a fourth-and hopefully final-time. We have installed a TV show-correct Motorola police radio and a working Federal siren, and of course we have the magnetic red light to stick on the roof! We have a recording of

car shows.”

radio calls from the TV show which plays through the police radio speaker during the

The car is one of 1,305 Starsky & Hutch replicas built by Ford Motor Company at the Chicago plant. These are commonly referred to as a “Limited” (short for Limited Production). Limited’s came out from the factory with the distinctive red and white paint job, although the stripe is different from what was shown on the television show. That was either due to copyrights or to make it easier for the assembly line. The slotted mag wheels were not included from the factory; most Limited’s came with Magnum 500 wheels. After purchasing an assembled 351 Windsor short block, 1970 Windsor heads were added. The engine also includes a mild cam, and an Edelbrock Performer 351W intake with an Edelbrock 600 cfm carb. The Torino uses stock exhaust manifolds with dual glasspacks. The transmission is a stock C4 rebuilt by Steve’s Transmissions in Springfield, IL. The rear axle is the stock 9 inch; the original 2.73 open gearset has been replaced with a 3.23:1 limited slip. “The car is a great highway cruiser. It is comfortable and drives straight. The factory R12 air conditioning works well. We have driven it approximately 25,000 miles since it was repainted. The longest trip being to the Carlisle Ford Nationals in Pennsylvania in 2016. It has also been to Indianapolis where we were able to drive around the Speedway as part of a car show there. The Torino has been on multiple trips to Michigan, Missouri, Kentucky, and all around Illinois too. It was famous and rare even when it was new, and now it’s one of approximately 100 known to exist. People constantly take pictures when we’re driving it. Anytime we take it out, people flock to it because they loved the TV show. The Torino doesn’t get out as much the last few years because it has been sharing show time with our 1968 Mercury Cougar. Since it was repainted in 2011 it has been in over 100 shows and probably brought home trophies in 30-40 of them.” Not bad for a car that has been everywhere it has, and never been trailered. Water-caused problems, such as boil-over, high pressure, overheating, corrosion, or electrolysis can be eliminated for good. The technology is fairly simple — to remove the issues caused by water, remove the water. There’s more to the story and so we asked the experts at Evans Waterless Coolants to shed some light on their revolutionary technology.

Q: What are the advantages of Evans waterless coolants?

A: Evans has a boiling point of 375 degrees Fahrenheit and freezes at minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit. This means no vapor formation, no vapor pressure, and no boilover. Evans maintains its liquid state, and with constant liquid-to-metal contact, efficient heat transfer continues even under higher temperatures. Evans’ lower operating pressure reduces stress on hoses, seals, and gaskets. The absence of water also means no corrosion and electrolysis.

Q: Which Evans Waterless Coolant product should I use for my vehicle? A: High Performance Coolant is for cars and light-duty trucks. Powersports Coolant is for motorcycles, ATVs,

and snowmobiles.

A: Water-based coolant boils at a temperature only slightly higher than the operating temperature of the coolant. Localized boiling releases water vapor that can only condense into coolant that is colder than the boiling point of water. Vapor that doesn’t condense occupies a volume that displaces liquid coolant. Hot engine metal, insulated by water vapor, becomes an engine “hot spot” that can cause preignition and detonation. poorly designed could run hotter. The ability to lower the operating temperature depends on multiple factors, primarily coolant flow volume and air flow temperature. For example, multipass radiators will result in higher temperatures due to decreased coolant flow volume vs. large-tube multi-row radiators that improve coolant flow. Different thermostats may increase flow volume because of less restriction.

Q: Does Evans require periodic maintenance?

A: No periodic addition of additives is required, nor should any ever be added. Evans recommends inspecting the cooling system at least once a year to ensure water content remains below 5 percent.

Q: How easy is it to install Evans Waterless Coolant?

A: The conversion process is not complicated but should be done thoroughly and according to written instructions, along with instructional videos that can be viewed at: www. evanscooling.com.

Q: What happens if I have water in my cooling system after installing Evans?

A: Water content may lower the boiling point and may reduce the corrosion protection. If a water content exceeds 5 percent, drain a portion from the system and add back new Evans waterless coolant until below 5 percent.

The NHRA has approved Evans for use on drag racing tracks, because of its lower pressure, and reduced likelihood it will spill on the track. For preserva-tion purposes, Evans protects against the destructive effects of water and is why collectors and museums such as Jay Leno, the American Muscle Car Museum, and the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum use Evans to protect their valuable collections.

carrier, so I drive across the entire country.” This enables him to participate in various car shows throughout the country by adding his car to a load going to the right area. A photo shows a load of Torinos for one of those shows, The Carlisle Pennsylvania All Ford Na-tionals. “Two of the Torinos were mine, the other four belonged to friends I’ve met over the years in the Torino community.” The year was 2016, the 40th Anniversary of the Ford Starksy & Hutch Limited Edition Gran Torino. As a kid in the 70’s, Eldon was a fan of the television show, Starksy & Hutch. He always wanted a SH Torino. “In 2007, I came across an ad in an auto trader magazine. A woman in New Mexico was selling her one owner Starsky and Hutch replica.” Special Note: She ordered it in dark red with a white bucket interior because she felt the origi-nal bright red was too flashy. The dealer added the stripe and mag wheels. “After bringing the Gran Torino home and detailing it, I started taking it to a few car shows. I discovered there were more people in the Starsky & Hutch car community than initially expected.” He is also part of an online community of Starsky & Hutch car owners called StarskyTorino.com. In 2012, Eldon heard through a friend that one of the cars from the 2004 Starsky and Hutch movie was possibly for sale. The car was owned by Mike Walsh the owner of Premiere Studio Rentals in San Fernando, CA. Mike was a supplier of TV cars for televi-sion and movies. He built the two Hero cars for the Starksy and Hutch movie. He sold Hero 2 after the movie premiered but kept Hero 1 for himself. After eight years, he de-cided to sell Hero 1. “I called Mike to talk about the car, not really expecting that I would really be able to get a real screen used movie car. I test drove the car and spent an

afternoon with Mike hearing about the build and its movie use. After that, I was sold and determined to own the car.” This Torino was in great condition as a movie car but needed work to make it pass in-spection for street use. “I had to install windshield wipers, a rearview mirror, and add wiring from a parts car to have backup lights. For promotional photo shoots, there were 4 high beam headlights; I changed to two high beams and 2 low beams. The door locks needed work; horns were added. New rod bearings and main bearings in the engine had to be replaced due to the stress that it was put under during filming.” The trunk needed a jack and spare tire. The dome light and dash lights were not working so those were repaired. Special features include an absolutely clear windshield with no rearview mirror. This is to ensure during filming the actors would not have any green tint on their faces. It has a quick ratio racing steering box for quicker turns while doing stunts. It has eye bolts in the seatbelt floor mounts to temporarily

hook up the racing seatbelt harness when doing high speed stunts. The car was painted Viper Red to make it brighter than the TV car and pop more on the big screen. The interior was converted from black bench seats to black bucket seats, floor shifter, and console so the actors wouldn’t slide around during burnouts and quick maneuvers. The drive train was done by Premiere Studio Rentals as part of the car’s transformation to a Starsky & Hutch movie car. The producers wanted a car that would do what they needed without having to use special effects. The exhaust system sounded so good that they used it in the movie, not special effects. The engine is a 351W bored out to a 360 with a Scat crank and rods. It has a 10.1 compression, Edelbrock RPM aluminum heads, a RPM high rise 4-barrel intake, a high lift cam, and headers. The engine produced 425HP on dyno. The transmission is C6 auto transmission with a 3800 stall converter and a manual shift valve body. The rear end has a 9-inch posi with 4.11 gears. “I’m very protective of my Torino. It does get a lot of attention with people pulling out their phones to take pictures and videos. I mainly drive it at car shows and special events. Compared to other ‘74, ‘75, and ‘76 Gran Torinos, it has a lot more power with the upgrades. The full driving experience is to me all about having the windows down (no AC) and listening to the sounds of the engine and exhaust. I have to crank up the volume very loud if I want to listen to 70s tunes on the 8-track tape player! It handles reasonably well.” In 2018, Eldon showed his car in New Orleans where Paul Michael Glaser (Starsky) and David Soul (Hutch) drove the Torino around New Orleans in an exclusive fan event also attended by Antonio Fargas (Huggy Bear) where they signed the car. As most people will know, they were the original stars from the TV show. It also has the signatures of Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson from when they filmed the 2004 movie. For people who have seen the movie, they may remember at the end was an out take of a stunt driver. He crashed the front of the car while doing a reverse 180 at high speed. He hit a parked police car, damaging the front end on the 3rd take. “This was my car that was crashed but it did end up in the scene in the movie, they just used an earlier take. The scene was when Starsky first picks up Hutch at the police station. The car was quickly repaired and back on the set for filming.”

A Trip to the New En

Photos By LOU CICERONE Motorhead took a ride over to the New England Air Museum in August. “We took a ride up there, we had a great time,” said Motorhead publisher Lou Cicerone, “it’s a great place to visit. Definitely a must see destination on a Saturday or Sunday, jump in the car and head over, you won’t be disappointed!” The New England Air Museum (NEAM) is an aerospace museum located adjacent to Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, CT. The museum consists of three display hangars with additional storage and restoration hangars. It’s collections include aircraft ranging from early flying machines to supersonic jets, as well as engines, and other pieces of flight-related equipment. Significant aircraft include the Silas Brooks balloon basket - the oldest surviving American-built aircraft, the Sikorsky VS-44A - the sole remaining American-built commercial trans-oceanic four-engine flying boat, the Goodyear ZNPK-28 Blimp Control Car - one of only two surviving K-class control cars in the world. Exhibits include the history of Sikorsky Aircraft, computer-based flight simulators, and the 58th Bombardment Wing Memorial with the centerpiece being a restored B-29A. Additionally, there are exhibits on early French aviation, the Tuskegee Airmen, the Kosciuszko Squadron, and the 57th Fighter Group. The museum library has approximately 6,000 aviation books, approximately 20,000 periodicals, approximately 10,000 technical manuals, approximately 21,000 photographs, nearly 8,000 slides, over 200 pieces of artwork, over 1,200 prints, and approximateContinued Next Page 36| Motorhead Magazine - September 2020

By K V How many times can you say the same word when looking at one vehicle? Spend just a few minutes looking at Ron Faria’s custom 1934 Ford Truck and you will say “Wow” or some iteration of that word many, many times. So many things jump out at you with just one glance you’re not sure where to look. One of the most obvious things is the stance. This truck is low. The top was chopped 5 inches and the bottom was channeled 4 inches. The monster rear tires also grab your attention. The 15x10 Rocket Racing wheels are mounted inside huge Mickey Thompson Sportsman Pro tires out back with skinny 15x4 wheels and Mickey Thompson tires up front. Continued Next Page

Ron Faria’CUSTOM s ‘34 Continued from previous page

It was no small feat for Ron to get this truck to sit the way it does. He is a Master Auto Body Tradesman at Balise Collision Center. He used his skills to fabricate a custom dropped axle I-beam front suspension along with a custom 4-link rear suspension. The rear end is a 9” Ford with 3.70 gears. Sandwiched between the engine and rear end is 5 speed manual transmission. The engine Ron stuffed into the boxed ‘34 style frame is just mean, it’s almost intimidating. A run-of-the-mill engine wasn’t going to cut it for this project, so Ron put together an old school small block Chevy 40| Motorhead Magazine - September 2020

with aluminum heads and a 6-71 supercharger with dual Edelbrock carbs sitting on top. The zoomie style headers are right at home on this mean machine. When this monster is running the sound of the supercharger and exhaust is music to the ears of any old school hot rodder. One of the signature pieces that makes the truck look so cool is the grill. The grill and the cab are a matched pair from 1934. Almost everything has been modified in some way, including the bed of the truck which was shortened quite a few inches. Ron could have easily worked his magic and applied a world class paint job, but that wasn’t the goal with this truck. He has built cars that were too nice to drive and enjoyed them for what they were when finished. He built this truck to have fun and “drive the wheels off”. He doesn’t worry about any small nicks or scratches that may happen while out for a cruise, they all add to the character. The interior is just as cool as the outside. A full complement of Autometer gauges keep tabs on how the truck is running and a custom 23” long shifter topped off with a Rat Fink knob is used to row the gears. The aluminum bomber style seats are surrounded by custom 3” fur upholstery. Ron did an amazing building this truck, but he didn’t do it alone. He credits his loving wife Kim for her “support and understanding” of his hobby and his local speed shop- Karl’s East Coast Speed for helping him get parts throughout the build.

SPEEDWAY UPDATE

SILK GETS LATE BREAK FOR WIN IN THOMPSON 150 BARNBURNER

By KYLE SOUZA THOMPSON SPEEDWAY MOTORSPORTS PARK

CT’s Ron Silk had both the fast car and good fortune he needed to triumph over a stout NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour field in a wild and wooly Thompson 150 at Connecticut’s Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park on Thursday, September 3. Silk was handed the lead under caution on lap 149 when NASCAR Cup Series invader Ryan Preece ran out of fuel. The veteran Silk then held off point leader Justin Bonsignore on a green-white-checkered overtime finish to capture his 14th career Whelen Modified Tour victory and put an end to Bonsignore’s grip on the historic speedway. Polesitter and six-time champion Doug Coby of Norwalk, CT set the early pace, leading a three-car breakaway with Holtsville, NY’s Bonsignore and Miller Place, NY’s Craig Lutz. Coby easily held the top spot through the first caution on lap 29 when Anthony Nocella spun while trying to pass Patrick Emerling for fourth. However, the handle on Coby’s car began to go away. Coming off turn two on the 67th go-around, both Bonsignore and Lutz dove beneath Coby and drop-kicked him back to third. When the caution came out again four laps later for Chris Pasteryak’s spin, all the lead-lap cars chose to head down pit road for fresh tires and adjustments. Silk, who started eight, was sitting in sixth following the pit stop cycle, but when the green flag flew again, the veteran roared up to third on the outside as Coby continued to drift backwards. Silk then moved into the second spot on lap 88 and stayed there through two more yellows for spins from Nocella and Calvin Carroll. On the latter caution at lap 108, Coby chose to make an unscheduled pit stop after having fallen all the way to eighth. Silk made two attempts to divebomb Bonsignore for the lead after the restart, but Bonsignore was ready and took the lead right back each time. On the 125th circuit, though, Silk was able to make the move stick, getting past Bonsignore entering turn three. Lutz did the same to Bonsignore a few laps later, and Berlin, CT’s Preece was right behind him as he started to come on strong. Following Nocella’s third spin of the night on lap 133, Bonsignore surged 44| Motorhead Magazine - September 2020

back into second on the restart. The field then ran out of real estate exiting turn four, which led to a red flag after Eric Goodale, Timmy Solomito, and Sam Rameau piled into the frontstretch wall. Racing resumed with eight laps to go, and after Preece negotiated his way to the runner-up spot, he swung to the outside of Silk entering turn one, taking the lead on lap 147 to thunderous applause. But the biggest twist was yet to come. The seventh caution flew a lap after the lead change when Kyle Bonsignore pounded the turn-four wall. As the field circled under caution, Preece’s fuel tank suddenly ran dry despite having packed it full before the start. Preece helplessly coasted to a stop in the pits as Silk found himself back in the lead. Lutz lined up alongside Silk for the final two-lap sprint and tried to make a last-ditch charge, but slid up the track in turn one, allowing Silk to get away for the win. Despite his 7-of-8 Thompson Speedway winning streak getting snapped, Justin Bonsignore maintained his point lead with a runner-up finish. Chelmsford, MA’s Jon McKennedy took third starting at the rear for an unapproved adjustment. Pasteryak recovered from his mid-race spin to finish fourth while Coby sliced through the field late to come home fifth. Dave Sapienza, Ronnie Williams, Nocella, Matt Swanson, and rookie Tyler Rypkrema rounded out the top-10. A trio of cautions then flew over an eight-lap span, the last of which came on lap 21 when Walter Sutcliffe and Michael Mitchell smacked the turntwo wall. When the field re-racked for a four-lap shootout, Pitkat chose the inside line with Gluchacki at his right-side door. The Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park oval will play host to the 48th Sunoco World Series of Speedway Racing from Friday, October 9 to Sunday, October 11. A total of 17 divisions are tentatively scheduled for the annual racing festival, including the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, Pro All Stars Series Super Late Models, 350 Small Block Supermodifieds, and Northeast Midget Association. The full schedule and pricing will be announced in the coming weeks. Jet Cars Under the Stars 2020: End of an Era TOM McCARTHY

On August 1, 2020, at New England Dragway, Rt 101, Epping, NH, the annual Jet Cars Under the Stars event was held for the New England racing fans – the faithful – who bought every ticket they could and packed the place for an excellent show, under the lights. The NED, Jet Cars Under the Stars show has been a staple of the New England Racing scene for dec-ades now. The fans know what to expect and it’s fast paced action from the 6PM show time start till near 10-PM every year. That’s near four hours of loud peddle punctuated by intermittent Jet Car blasts, down the storied 1320 racing surface. The show for the year 2020 included headliners such as Hanna Motorsports jet dragster and jet Funny Cars, Ernie Bogue driving “The Beast from the East” jet dragster, the Chevy Wheelstander Pick-uptruck, the Hot Rods from Hell and of course the star of the show, “The Shock Wave” tri-motor Jet Truck. In addition to the headliners, the New England Dragway racers kept the racing entertainment going with the racing classes engaged in eliminations with the categories of Pro Comp, Top Sportsman, New England No-Time, Gassers, Top Bike and Street Fighter. the days racing classes in-clude: Scott Hall in Pro Comp, Matt Harper in Iannotti Select Top Sportsman class, Gassers Tony Gen-tile, New England No-Time (incomplete), Joe Ferraro in Top Bike and Scott Benevides in Street Fighter. These classes kept the event lively from when the gates opened at 9am, racing began just after 10am and tires were churning and burning till just after 9:45PM during another long glorious day of racing. At the conclusion of the event, New England Dragway invited the fans out onto the racing surface to walk the track and experience up close and personal what it’s like out on that race track. This was a real treat for the New England racing fans who flooded the race course after the race.

It was a very complex process to coordinate with local and state entities all that was needed for the National Hot Rod Association to bring it’s biggest show to New England racing fans. From 2013 through 2019, the Mello Yello races were an immense hit with New England drag racers and fans – thousands of them. The six year string of Mello Yello races at NED came to a screeching halt in 2020 due to the NHRA having to handle scheduling concerns due to the COVID-19 Pandemic of

over the helm of New England Dragway and in a matter of days, Ron was back in the tower, steering the good ship NED into the wind, to launch into the future. No one can say for certain what the future holds for racing due to COVID-19 concerns, but one thing is certain: racing will go on, one way or an-other and once again we will see the Jet Cars Under the Stars and racing action at New England Drag-way.

While the show was solid in presenting the fans with racing action, this particular event was a landmark one in NED history in that it was the last event for racing facility GM Joe Lombardo. Joe began working at New England Dragway part time in 1992 as the track announcer. After he retired from the Navy in 1994, the track offered him a job writing and reporting in the track newspaper Lauryn “New“Hotwheels” England Pontiac-Vernancio Dragway News.” He actually went full time as an employee of NED in 1997. KNIGHT RIDER LIVES ON By ROB MAY and MARC BROWN

interior pieces.”

Marc Brown, a lone crusader in a dangerous world, has been involved in the Knight Rider community for 25 years. “I’ll never forget my Dad yelling ‘Hey, that show about a talking car is coming on.’ I fell in love with KITT (Knight Industries Two Thousand). It was like Dukes of Hazzard’s General Lee, but indestructible and had an attitude!”. Marc’s first car is his 1968 Mercury Cougar, which we know catches Rob May’s attention! “It was passed down through the family.”

Marc totally took everything apart. “Everything was removed before the bodywork (which was done by me). I wanted the body to have a seamless look, with no overlapping of metals from factory, no extra holes, no dimples.” There were tons of welding and grinding on this vehicle. “I started

Having several cars in the past, Marc decided he wanted to do one more ride and was given the quote ‘ONE MORE ONLY!’ He found a 1988 Formula Firebird and spent 12 years transforming it into the Knight Rider Replica. Marc says there is much to learn when making a Knight Rider. “KITT is truly a hard car to replicate, and it took a lot longer due to making parts, looking for NOS pieces, and finding vendors for KITT related parts. The kiddo has seen it totally come together and I want to thank my Wife (Doniel Brown) and Stella for their time and believing in me throughout the project.” “If I could have known what I know now, I’d start with an 82-84 Trans Am and things would have been 10X easier. Instead, I went into it only looking at needing a Firebird with T-Tops and Cowl Hood. I did not think how hard it would be to find 82-84 fenders with air extractors, PMD seats and Continued Next Page 50| Motorhead Magazine - September 2020

with the engine bay. I had already thought about doing a twin turbo setup, so I welded in pans where battery and charcoal/ emissions canister went. Oh, don’t get your welding too close to the interior insulation as it will catch on fire really quick. I lost my whole wiring harness due to this.” Bodywork on KITT lasted 3 years. “During this

time, I purchased some Knight Rider parts through a vendor to start the conversion process. The lines on the nosecone did not look like the original nosecone designed by Michael Scheffe (designer of KITT). Therefore, I went down a road of sculpting my own nose and oh did I learn some stuff!! I found some members of the Knight Rider community that had original measurements of the original nosecone, and I started sculpting my own front nose/bumper. My first nosecone required 1.5 years to sculpt, due to learning how to sculpt including learning secrets of fiberglass and filler. This nose that I sculpted never made it into production.” While the car’s body was ready for paint, Marc decided to do another nose after seeing the original in person at a Las Vegas Knight Rider show, and he had what I needed to make another. Sculpting this was another year. After purchasing some interior pieces from same vendor as the nose, Marc again did not like lines of dash. “I tried to sculpt and make it work, but I happened to come across a dash created from an original from Universal Studios. (I sold the first dash and got to see it installed a few years later on another replica). I was truly getting hooked on finding original buttons and gizmos from Knight Rider, so I started looking for the original TV frames for the 2-TV dash that Knight Rider’s 1st season had. This needed 6 months to find, but I did remember Scheffe saying it was a portable TV for tenting and outdoors. I found the TV-frames and was thrilled until I tried to put on the newer dash I received. This newer dash used the TV-frames that were replicas of the originals as nobody knew the size of original TV-frames. Well, they were about 3/8th different in size. So here I went again, re-sculpting the dash to fit the original TVFrames.” Everything was finally parallel, like original. Marc worked at gathering other pieces to finish interior. “I was looking everywhere for original buttons and original NOS interior pieces. I worked with a company at the time that was the only one making true to the show’s specifications on the electronics and what was wild was that he was in my own hometown! He and I worked on the electronic layouts for the 1st season car’s electronics. After 3 sets of electronics, the final set turned out

HP engine, then wanted to do a twin-Turbo setup, but he also came up with another CRAZY idea!! “I figured since I went this far with the bodywork and interior that I would try to make KITT’s engine look like a Jet-engine as KITT supposedly had.” This was another fabrication project. On the TV show, we never see the engine. “It was a year of making not only the engine cover, but also the scanner cover (to hide wires), tail-light cover, and tons of other wild and crazy looking stuff. I tried to think an industrial / Armed Forces look for the engine bay.” After a couple years, the engine was ready to be installed. The 350 is paired to a 700r4. “I put a turbo cam from Comp Cam in and set valve lash. We also installed the Martin Turbo kit. You have to have Turbo Boost!!! It’s a 2-plain intake with a valve door that when under pressure, closes and the fuel and air mix in turbo and then go under the top intake and into secondary intake bottom side intake.” The engine’s carb is a 750 CFM Demon 1901 which does great for getting plenty of fuel. Driveshaft from tranny to rear is Aluminum and the rear end is a beefier stock unit. All new Stainless brake lines from front to back and all new bushings and brakes. “After getting everything in place, I was able to get the engine started and tuned up. Engine ran nicely and was ready for a test drive.” Marc now had KITT! The most unique of the features is the nose on this KITT. “After sculpting a 3rd nose for a client, I was offered a chance to own a copy of an original nose. I took that offer and restored it to 1st season specs: meaning plexi-covers for turn signals and Grilles for fog area. This is the only 1st season original nose in existence. The next unique feature is the CRT monitors and dash. The CRTs are for viewing 3 cameras on vehicle (Front, middle, rear). This is KITT’s surveillance mode. The left monitor controls cameras and is switched between cameras with rocker switches on lower console. The right monitor projects viewing for DVD player and gaming system of choice; mainly Atari to keep retro. This also is controlled by rocker switches on lower console.

beautiful!! I’ll never forget after installing it into the dash, turning them all on for the first time. This was an awesome view to finally see it all come together. The kiddo and I had a blast playing Pac-man on KITT’s monitors!!!” Scott Winfield of the Paint Shop in Winston-Salem, NC created the deepest Black Marc has ever seen. Painting did not take too long due to bodywork already done. Scott sprayed, wet-sanded, and buffed it to a mirror. “Turned out GREAT! Thanks Scott!!!” After the beautiful paint job, it was time to add interior carpets and wiring harnesses for ALL the crazy electronics, mixers, speakers, DVDs, and Atari. “The wife and I put in the dash, and I finally visualized the KITT I remember as a kid. I found original NOS seat fabric, along with stealing my wife’s 82’s carpet and carpet panels for rear plastics of interior. (She did not approve of this).” To make KITT mobile. Marc initially decided on a crate GM traditional 260

At indoor car shows, where Marc is allowed larger setups, he added another feature. “I noticed while at shows, people were getting annoyed by KITT saying the same thing every 15-30 mins, so I added a USB style monitor on a stand that also drives the speaking of the car and the displays audio. The audio is put into the rear speakers underneath car, and the voice of KITT is put into front speakers underneath front of vehicle.” A little interaction with KITT was created with a slideshow presentation to allow KITT to “respond” to the video. For smaller cruise ins, there are motion detectors to sense motion on the front of KITT, and he will answer with phrases or scanner noises. This will freak a lot of people out. “I can also remotely control his voice along with actual voice commands using a simple iPhone with a mic placed at the T-top level of car. I can ask KITT questions, and he will respond. Or a person in crowd can ask, and most of the time, he answers with something making them laugh.” “Driving it is a blast. Steering with the KITT wheel is a little different, but you adapt to it. If I am getting gas, I prepare for an hour trip with people asking about the car or yelling ‘KITT!!!’” Yes, one man can make a difference! CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

Rhode Island State Plates

By JIM WEICHERDING

I attended one of the rare car shows hosted in Rhode Island recently and overheard two classic car owners discussing vehicle license plates on their rides. For starters, they were debating about license plate add-on frames that promote their specific vehicles or car club association. Another classic car owner overhead their discussion and joined in the debate. He told them both that any add-on frame that is attached to an existing license plate in the state of Rhode Island would fail inspection at any inspection shop. Both men argued that notion and asked, “if that was the case, then why didn’t they know about it?” I listened as all three classic car owners went back and forth about Rhode Island laws regarding their specific vehicles. By the time they were done talking, I don’t think any of them came to any conclusion regarding the topic discussed at all. I think they were more confused than when the conversation started an hour earlier. Coincidentally, I had to have my vehicle inspected that weekend and when I arrived at Burrillville Motors that Saturday morning on South Main Street in Pascoag, Rhode Island, the owner, Peter, told me that he had to remove the license plate frame attached by the automobile dealership because it would fail the inspection if it remained on the vehicle. I was surprised when he told me that was the case and asked him why automobile dealerships are allowed to attach their promotional dealership frame

around license plates. He said most of them don’t even know about the laws, or ignore the laws, and put them on all of their leased and purchased vehicles only to have owners get rejected at inspection stations across the state. He is not required to remove those add-on frames and the owners have to remove them personally before any vehicle inspection is approved. He also said multiple cameras are pointed at every vehicle he inspects and there are no short cuts when it comes to valid vehicle inspections.

SEP

He hopes this article will inform Rhode Island vehicle owners, whether they are family vehicles, or classic vehicles, that they need to remove any attached license plate frames before bringing them to a Rhode Island inspection station to avoid a rejection or delay, by getting their vehicles rescheduled for another inspection appointment.

2022

It’s a waste of time not only for inspectors like Peter at Burrillville Motors, but all Rhode Island inspection stations. It’s also a waste of time for vehicle owners in the state. I have added a photo showing eight license plate frames, covers and damaged appearances that show you what causes Rhode Island state vehicle inspection rejections provided by Peter at Burrillville Motors. It clearly shows you the eight causes for rejection. I hope this helps you understand the circumstances and delays you might face during an inspection in the state of Rhode Island so you, as well the inspection station owners, are not wasting time and you can get your family vehicle and classic ride inspected without any rejections or unnecessary problems down the road.

Fall Guy Stunt Truck By ROB MAY and KEVIN WEBB

performed exceptional and endured from mid-2nd season to the end of the series.

Glen A Larson is well known for his spectacular tv series including car and truck action shows. Lee Majors, Douglas Barr, and Heather Thomas all starred as Hollywood stunt performers who moonlight as bounty hunters in ‘The Fall Guy.’ Now add Kevin Webb of Oakridge, TN to that list with his mid-engine stunt truck! Fall Guy (five seasons 1981 to 1986) was filled with stunts performed using a GMC K-2500. This ‘Johnny Cash’ styled vehicle has parts on it from many ’75 to ’77 model years.

Severely weathered and worn from the stunts, the truck was sold to Kevin four years ago. Rusty underneath with a seized 350 engine and bad

Jump stunts cause havoc on chassis and bodies (vehicles and human). No CGI here. Several trucks were crashed. After The Fall Guy ended, a special stunt trunk was almost scrapped. The driver of the water truck seen in Dukes of Hazzard “saved” this Fall Guy stunt truck from being thrown away when it was offered to him free. With ties to the series several items such as Fall Guy crew passes, hats, and jackets made their way forward to Kevin and remain with the truck. Kevin, who has seen all the episodes, purchased the vehicle a few years ago in 2016. Previous trucks used in the series didn’t hold up well and tended to break each jump. Extra weight was added to their beds to help balance the load; however, weight added to the stress. The long-term solution was a custom-built truck with the engine centered low in the middle. Weights were no longer needed in the back. This “balanced” truck 62| Motorhead Magazine - September 2020

transmission meant it would arrive via trailer from Jackson, MS. Kevin’s goal was to revive the truck while maintaining as much of its show originality as possible. The truck arrived rough after sitting and neglected. Two and half years were spent to put the truck back on the road. The hood, driver’s door, and driver’s fender had already been sanded on, and these parts are the only exterior ones to be painted since leaving show duty. To maintain tv show continuity, the rest of the exterior was left as found including dents

shocks are at the rear too). Yes, Kevin has jumped a car. No, he hasn’t jumped the truck (yet). However, the original jump ramp used with this truck for the show is in Kevin’s possession! At several tv show events – such as Bo’s Extravaganza and World of Wheels, the truck has acquired signatures of actors and stuntmen including Lee

and dings. The chassis’ surface rust was blasted off. Rebuilding the engine and transmission was ensured the truck would run again. Kevin completed most of the work himself. Glass was added, as the stunt vehicle did not use the factory glass. Humvee truck tires hug the rims. A trailer is no longer need, and Kevin loves driving his truck around. The stunt and sport suspension are perfect for the not so well maintained roads in the area. A few details were added for driving purposes such as the custom-made spare well holder and tire cover as the stunt truck did not have these during its tv employment. This item is clamped in place to eliminate the need to change the bed’s design. More stunt tricks were learned while working on the truck. The interior has a full roll cage. Eyehooks are present that were used to secure the stuntmen in a web harness versus having to be strapped to the seat. With the engine in the center, the truck went from a 4-wheel drive to a 2-wheel drive. The front suspension was able to be upgraded with extra stiffening bars, solid front axle bar, and shocks (extra

Majors, Corey Eubanks & Tom Sarmento (both also of Dukes of Hazzard fame), Jack Gill, Lance Turner, and more. Of special note, is Kevin’s friend - Don Pedro Colley (August 30, 1938 – October 11, 2017) who was known as ‘Sheriff Little’ on Dukes of Hazzard. Don made several guest appearances in many other popular car TV series including Adam 12, Starsky and Hutch, Fantasy Island, and The A-Team. Kevin has a replica of Sheriff Little’s car (as well as Sheriff ’s Buford T Justice’s car from Smokey and the Bandit). Not surprising, since Kevin is a county sheriff deputy. Happy Birthday to Kevin Webb!

imPossible Dream 2020 Fundraiser Car Show JIM WEICHERDING To write, “Things Are Tough All Over”, is an understatement during this car show season due to the Coronavirus. But things must still get done and life still goes on. One of those things to get done, is to still try and help charities and charitable causes that need our help. A Buckleupallofus Kids and Family Fundraiser Car Show is scheduled for Sunday, September, 27th, at the imPossible Dream Castle Playground located in Warwick, Rhode

Island. Start time is 11am and ends at 2pm. Rain date is the following Sunday, October, 4th, with same start and end times. This car show is to help benefit the imPossible Dream Castle Playground. Unfortunately, this popular establishment has remained closed during their busy season because of the pandemic and are desperately in need of funding. Diane, the executive director, said the virus has had a huge negative impact on their organization and an event

like this could help them get through the coming months. ImPossible Dream helps disadvantaged and disabled kids have a place to play and interact with one another in a safe and friendly environment every year. Except this year. The fundraiser car show will feature the Giant Buckleupallofus Balloon, plenty of great takehome handouts for the kids and families, DJ music and radio broadcast provided by Kent County’s Classic Rock Radio Station with plenty of classic cars and trucks on display for everyone to enjoy. Awards will be presented to spectator-se-

lected showcase vehicles and Buckleupallofus child passenger safety fridge magnets will be handed out to the first 100 show vehicle entries. To help support imPossible Dream Castle Playground there will be a $20 entry fee for all classic vehicles. All proceeds benefit the playground. Spectators can attend free. There will also be a 50/50 raffle with all proceeds also going directly to benefit imPossible Dream. This event is sponsored by Buckleupallofus, Sandy Motors, Kent County’s Classic Rock Radio Station, Motorhead Magazine and Acumen Printing. This will be a Safe Distancing Car Show and face masks will be required. If you forget, or don’t have one, a face mask will be provided to you. Portable rest rooms will also be provided for your convenience.

OUTLAW is easier to handle on a highway rather than on any backroads. It’s way too powerful and not really set up for twists and turns. OUTLAW was built to go straight and go straight really, really, fast. Etch does not hear any sirens or see any police cruisers now that he is traveling at a higher rate of speed and his GTO’s dual exhaust sounds like thunder clapping all around him but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t out there looking for him. Etch puts the pedal to the metal again and launches down the empty highway. The law will be closing in soon enough but not yet. Etch’s OUTLAW GTO is flat out fast but po-lice officers have many vehicles

and radios to attempt stopping him dead in his tracks. Etch is all alone and he has no idea where his pursuers are at any given moment. The stress and anxiety is hard to han-dle. Almost as hard as handling an eight hundred horsepower classic muscle car being chased by the law. OUTLAW is traveling at a high rate of speed still trying to elude law enforcement agencies that want him stopped and tossed behind bars. They also want to crush Etch’s classic muscle car and send a message to anyone else that might be thinking the same way Etch is thinking right now about the new laws and regulations that removed all of our freedoms and

rights to drive our vintage vehicles on Ameri-ca’s roadways. Police officers stopped on an overpass see the jet black GTO approaching from a dis-tance of approximately one hundred yards away and approaching fast. Six police officers draw their re-volvers and take aim at the Pontiac as it speeds towards their location perched above the highway on a cleared overpass. Etch can see them as he pushes the GTO to its limits and mats the gas pedal onto the floor mat. Shots ring out.

CARS ARE T

By ROB MAY

Remember when TV shows were good? Time traveling back several decades is required to the era where MTV was about music videos and cars were the stars. Our new theme will be vehicles (not just cars) that held your attention while eagerly awaiting the next episode. Grabbing your hearts also meant making a Christmas list of the corresponding toys (highly collectible now). We will focus on shows from the 70’s and 80’s (with a special guest car from the 60’s). Starsky & Hutch, Knight Rider, Dukes of Hazzard, The Fall Guy, CHiPs, Riptide, Hardcastle & McCormick, Simon & Simon, Magnum P.I., The A-Team, Miami Vice, The Rockford Files, Fantasy Island, Emergency, B.J. and the Bear, T.J. Hooker, Airwolf, Automan, and Vega$ all comprise a quick initial list of fantastic shows with stand-out vehicle “stars”. Some shows clearly were car themed while others are mentioned due to the neat background car platforms (Jeff Louis’s Ford Pinto reminiscent of Charlie’s Angels for example from a previous Mo-torhead Issue). We will have coverage of a few cars dedicated to these shows in this issue and upcom-ing Motorhead editions. Georgina Garcia May Photography provides us a glimpse of items from the May museum. Plastic model kits, diecasts, and action figures are the top popular items sought after then and now. TV show names and products were featured everywhere from shirts, napkins, posters, colorforms, books, plastic dishes, jewelry, towels, blankets, sheets, bop bags, and soap. Themes were applied to all areas in your house (indoors and outdoors). Let’s focus on miniature vehicles! Revell, Monogram, and MPC ruled the model kit arena. ERTL and Corgi topped the diecast world. HG Toys, Gay Toys Inc, Ideal, Processed Plastics all created plastic versions. Mego released figures that had their associated star cars too. Mint in Box (MIB) collectibles typically hold better then twice the value of a similar item mint loose. While the museum favors vintage items, modern manufactured products are collected too. Starsky & Hutch ran for four seasons beginning in April of 1975 with a 2004 tribute style movie. The “star” of this show is the Ford Torino in classic red with white signature slanted stripe. FORD of-fered a 1976 Limited edition in the S&H motif. Corgi and Mego (and others) produced popular S&H items. Current items are available as well including Johnny Lightning, American Muscle RCErtl, and Greenlight. Knight Rider aired for four seasons initially in September of 1982 with a rebooted tv series for two seasons (2008). KITT, an indestructible Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, featured a Cylon inspired nose red scanner light (Glen Larson’s Battlestar Galactica shining through). ERTL, Kenner, and MPC KITTs are great vintage trea68| Motorhead Magazine - September 2020

sures. Multiple modern products are available too. Dukes of Hazzard (seven seasons January 1979 to Feb 1985) is well known for their very iconic and memorable 1969 Dodge Charger fondly named “General Lee”. ‘01’ was on the welded shut doors, and the Confederate Flag was proudly displayed on the roof. Horns played “Dixie”! Hundreds of Chargers were bent while filming jumps. General Lees were made by many companies including MPC, ERTL, Ideal, Mego, HG Toys, and more. While some ‘modern’ companies started pulling products or hiding the flag, thankfully, new items do arrive on the market. Fall Guy (five seasons 1981 to 1986) was filled with stunts performed using a GMC K-2500. One stunt

truck has a mid-sized engine. This ‘Johnny Cash’ styled vehicle has parts on it from many model years. Ertl diecasts are highly sought out. Greenlight returns Fall Guy to the spotlights. The Rockford Files (six seasons beginning in 1974) features a Gold Pontiac Firebird. While the show used a new model every year; sadly, few miniature collectibles are available. In 2012, Hot Wheels sold one such item.

NHRA Divisional inco TOM McCARTHY At New England Dragway, Rt 101, Epping NH, the 2020 NHRA Divisional event, also known as the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series (LODRS) for this year was an incomplete event, due to weather. The rains came heavy and hard on Sunday, 23 August, 2020, to halt the event dead in its tracks. The competition was fierce and going well, round after round, but Mother Nature took over and the various incomplete classes will be run to completion at future NHRA events. The classes of Comp, Super Gas and Super Stock will be run on Friday, September 26th, at Maple Grove., during the next LODRS event. On Thursday, at the same event, Super Comp will also run to completion. The classes of Top Dragster, Top Sportsman and Super Street will finish up Thursday, October 1st at Virginia Motorsports Park during their next LODRS race.

complete due to rain The LODRS events, hosted by NHRA are Sportsman only racing classes as the NHRA professional classes race the Mello Yello series of events. This race featured the classes of Super Street, Stock, Super Comp, Super/ Stock, Super Gas, Top Dragster, Competition Eliminator, and Top Sportsman. Close to 400 sportsman racers from NHRA Division 1 filled the pits at New England Dragway beginning on Tuesday, August 18th to get good pit side prime parking. Early testing took place on Wednesday the 19th with the racers eager to out there and get their cars dialed in. On Wednesday, during testing, local Top Dragster standout Jim Blake had a wild ride on his first testing pass when he zinged the motor and popped the blower. A mechanical failure happened and Jim’s electronics went south and when that happened “The Motor just went to the Moon on that one” he commented in a post-race interview. He had flames going every which way and the car was dancing everywhere in Frank Aragona the shut down area. But thanks to quick acting New England Dragway staff and the NHRA Safety Safari, the flames were quickly extinguished and the damage was contained. Jim Blake, his son Jamie and his daughter Patty, who race in S/C, thrashed every day to get the car repaired and they managed to qualify and make to eliminations on Sunday.
