BUILDING HORSEPOWER DURING THE APOCALYPSE MIKE GALLO Well, I hope you are all doing well during this COVID-19 apocalypse! With so much craziness going on it’s tough to stay focused! But with the help of some good friends with tons of knowledge, it makes it much easier to cope. As you can see I have continued to push forward with my performance build with the help of RKL PERFORMANCE in West Warwick, RI. Ray has helped me with all of this build and he continues to do first rate work with my 2009 Z06 CORVETTE. This time around we decided to install a MSD ATOMIC INTAKE MANIFOLD and HOLLEY RED POWDER COATED VALVE COVERS. Pretty straight forward install…or so we thought. After letting the car cool down Ray pulled off the stock intake manifold with the valve covers and the ignition coils. Once we had the throttle body off the intake we decided it would probably be a good idea to port it. After a few hours of doing some grinding and smoothing, the throttle body was opened up and looked much better. We decided to pull the MSD intake apart to check out the runners and - although it is a work of art - it still needed a little bit of port work. Ray pulled out the cartridge rolls for the grinder and cleaned up the casting flaws from the factory and put the intake back together. At that point it was time to bolt the throttle body on to the intake to get it ready to put it on the car. Of course it wasn’t as easy as planned because the oil pressure sensor on the back of the motor was interfering slightly with the MSD. When all was said and done and adjusted, the intake found its place on top of the motor and Ray installed the fuel rails and fuel injectors.

CALL 401-965-9012 TO ADVERTISE

Now that the motor was starting to look very good it was time to install the new Holley valve covers that provided direct mounting of the ignition coils to them for a clean sanitary look. I took the ignition coils and cleaned them as best I could. We then bolted them on to the covers with some Allen head bolts to make it look cleaner. This was very straightforward and we really had no problems at all. Under the hood was actually starting to look very good. The fit and quality of the MSD atomic intake manifold is second to none…it really is a masterpiece under the hood of my car, in my opinion of course. Now it was time to button up all the vacuum lines and connect the cold air intake to the freshly ported throttle body. Everything went perfect and I’m sure it is because of Ray’s top-notch work that he provides. We fired up the car and it was absolutely perfect. This intake is supposed to provide an additional 20-30 rear-wheel horsepower. I guess we will see about that after the car is all tuned and put on the dyno. After warming the car up and taking it for a ride, I can definitely feel a difference in the performance as it feels much faster than it did before we did all of the work. Any of you guys have any horsepower predictions on what the car should make rear wheel? I have a slight idea but I’m going to keep it to myself and see what happens. Check out next month’s issue to see how we made out. Once again I would like to thank RKL Performance for everything he has done for my car. Stay safe everyone and hopefully we will all be out of this lockdown soon and back to enjoying our cars.

Suffering from mandatory down time? Stay at home order got you on the edge of your seat? Not going to a car show or cruise night having you pulling what’s left of your hair out of your head? Well, grab a wrench and go outside and play around with your ride.

Hopefully, by the time this article reaches you the weather is getting better with milder temperatures and plenty of sunshine so you can leave the confines of your home and attempt your own minor automotive repairs and quick fixes by yourself. Let the kids help. They are probably waiting to break

Do something else while you are doing that. Show your kids some basic automotive skills and educate them about tackling minor automobile repairs. We all rely on professional automotive shops, garages and custom specialists. That’s great too! They are professionals and most of the time we all need them to help us get from point A to point B in our daily road traveling lives. Minor automotive repairs that can be done quickly and in our driveways and garages are important too. Hose leaks can be temporarily repaired until you get it to the auto repair shop in your area. Flat tires can be changed relatively easy if you know what to do too. Believe it, or not, a majority of male teens in this country don’t even know how to change a tire or even check the oil level in their own cars. If you are mechanically inclined and you have a child, or kids, it won’t hurt to show them how to turn a wrench. And please don’t alienate your daughters when it comes to minor vehicle repairs. They should know basic automotive repairs too even if they never, ever need to use it. It’s better to know how to do something and not need to do it

ZEN AND THE ART OF INTERIOR DETAILING IN THE AGE OF COVID-19 (With Apologies to Robert Pirsig)

By BILL PRATT We have written before about cleaning and detailing your vehicle. Now seems an appropriate time to talk about how to do that with an eye towards keeping you and your family safe as the coronavirus works its way around the country. Most of us probably clean our homes way more often than we clean our vehicles. And we’ve probably never sanitized or disinfected them. But when you think about all the times we touch the interior of our vehicles and the number of different places we touch, it’s something we really need to think about if we’re going to help slow down the spread of COVID-19. The first thing we need to do is define what we’re talking about. People tend to use the words clean, sanitize, and disinfect interchangeably, but they have different meanings, and that’s important to know. You will use different supplies and techniques depending on which you are trying to do. CLEANING is to get rid of dirt, grime, spots, marks, etc. It’s what we generally do when we detail our cars. SANITIZING reduces the number of germs and the amount of contamination. DISINFECTING means to kill all the germs. What makes this hard is the interior of a vehicle has many different types of material in it – plastic, vinyl, rubber, leather, wood, aluminum, carbon fiber, metal, etc. And what works on one type of material might ruin another type. Bleaching the entire inside of your car would kill the germs, but it would also damage most of the materials. There’s also the issue of how long cleaners need to sit on a surface in order to do their job. A disinfecting wipe will clean with a single swipe, but to sanitize it needs to stay wet on the surface for several seconds, and to fully disinfect, it might need to stay wet for several minutes. That could mean wiping an area over and over. The good news in all of this is that anything is better than nothing; the bad news is that this is not a one-and-done situation. To be effective at a time like this, you need to take steps every time you get in your vehicle. We’re just going to talk today about cleaning and sanitizing. Disinfecting would be nice, but it would take a lot longer and is only good until the first time you get in your car. Then it’s not disinfected any more. Cleaning and sanitizing are a lot easier to do and to maintain. First things first: gather the equipment you’ll need: gloves, vacuum, an automotive interior cleaning spray, leather cleaner or rejuvenator (we use and sell Surf City Garage products), bucket of dish soap (make sure it does not say it is free of detergents

cleaner to a microfiber cloth and then clean. Clean the windows and the rearview mirror. If you’ve got leather seats, steering wheel, gear shift, console cover, etc., use the leather cleaner on these areas (again applying to a microfiber cloth first and then cleaning). You can also use the leather rejuvenator, if you’re leather is getting older. It will help keep it from drying out and cracking. Once you’ve done that, dunk a clean microfiber cloth into your bucket of soap and water and wring it out thoroughly. You don’t want the cloth to be too wet, or you could run into issues with the surfaces not drying properly. You can use this solution to clean pretty much any surface, including your cloth or vinyl seats and carpeting or floor mats. Don’t drown these areas – just moisten. Gently scrub to loosen dirt and grime. Wipe it off with a fresh microfiber cloth. Make sure your carpets are dry before you replace any floor liners or mats. After the interior has been thoroughly cleaned, you can sanitize with your disinfecting wipes. For the first time, you want to get all the areas you would touch: exterior door handles, interior door handles, steering wheel and any steering wheel controls, gear shift lever or knob, parking brake handles, touch screen on your audio/navigation system, rearview mirror, console latch, turn signals and windshield wiper levers, headlight switches, cup holders, seat belts (including the button you push to release the belt), interior light switches, garage door opener switches (if you have them), glove box latch, arm rest, interior light switches. Sit in the driver’s seat and take a good look around and wipe down everything you can touch. To sanitize, you want the area to be wet for 10-20 seconds, so wipe each area multiple times before moving on to the next. You don’t need to sanitize everything in the interior – don’t worry about the dashboard or the seats or your headliner or the rear seat ledge. You don’t actually touch those that often, and you run the risk of damaging them. Just focus on the places you touch. A few important tips: be careful cleaning your touch screens. Alcohol-based cleaners can damage them. You can use a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and distilled water. Spray it on a clean microfiber cloth (paper towels can scratch the screens), wipe down the touch screen, and then dry them off with a fresh clean microfiber cloth. Also, use fresh, clean microfiber cloths to wipe down any residue from your other cleaning. You want to wipe off whatever you wipe on; you don’t want to leave things to air dry. If you are so inclined, you could finish up with a light spray of an antibacterial/antiseptic spray in your vents and under your seats. Now you’ve done the hard work, and your car is good to go. Remove your gloves without touching the outside of them, and wash your hands again.

– you want those here) and water, duster (if you have one), microfiber cloths, glass cleaner, disinfecting wipes or spray (make sure they do not contain bleach). Start off by washing your hand with soap and water and then glove up. Wipe down your car keys and outside door handles with a disinfecting wipe. Then clean the interior of the car. Clear out all the garbage first (might as well do the trunk while you’re at it!). That’s fewer places for germs to hang out. Vacuum the carpets, the headliner, and cloth seats. Use the duster or a microfiber cloth to dust off the dashboard and the rear window area and then use your interior cleaner on those areas. Apply the

Going forward, keep gloves, disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer in your car. Use a glove at the gas station. Those pumps get touched by hundreds of people every day. Discard the glove in the gas station trash can before you get back in the car. Use your hand sanitizer when you get back in. (Word of caution – just keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer in your car. A large bottle in the heat of a car’s interior could potentially “boil” and ruin the bottle, leaving you to clean up the mess.) Use the disinfecting wipes daily to wipe down the areas you touch each time you drive like your exterior and interior door handles, seat belt, gear shift, turn signals, parking brake, etc. Don’t forget your car keys! Re-wipe other parts as needed. It will take just a few seconds to maintain and will help slow down the spread of this virus. Bill Pratt is the Owner & General Manager of Rock ‘n Road Outfitters. “OUTLAW RUN” Cruisin’ For Charity Cavalcade of Classic Cars & Trucks By JIM WEICHERDING

As most of you reading this article are very much aware, I’m a classic car and truck enthusiast. I have been hosting and attending classic car and truck shows for more than twenty-five years. I host and attend more than 100 charity car shows and cruise nights across New England and New York State every cruisin’ season reminding kids, teens and families about Buckle Up! and traffic safety.

“OUTLAW RUN” Cruisin’ For Charity Cavalcade of Classic Cars & Trucks. The Cruisin’ Cavalcade begins at Broncos Plaza on Route 102 around 10 am and the procession of classic vehicles will cruise through the community of Burrillville raising everyone’s spirits, while helping to raise funds to feed families and pay utility bills for needy Burrillville residents. The venue will follow the Governor’s social distancing order with partici-

I thought of this venue because we cannot attend our regular car and truck shows or cruise nights because of social distancing orders. No groups larger than five people congregating in one location is allowed right now. That hurts the automotive hobby but it also hurts all of the charities that we help raise money for during this time of year. We cannot travel from one state to another state to attend these events right now or face quarantine for fourteen days when we come back home. I have more than fifty show vehicles attending to date but expect more classic car and truck owners to want to participate once the word gets out that I’m doing this venue. I have large networks of automotive enthusiast friends as well as associations with classic car and truck clubs and DJ’s that play music at these types of events. The Burrillville route is not yet designated but it will be mapped out soon. I also expect this venue to become an annual fundraiser for Between The Cracks nonprofit organization as well as all of the other community “OUTLAW RUN” Cruisin’ For Charity Cavalcade of Classic Cars and Trucks events I am organizing for the remainder of this season until the end of October, and every year after. I have organized this fundraising venue to help benefit Between The Cracks Non-Profit Organization taking place on Saturday, May 9th, 2020. It’s called, 16| Motorhead Magazine - May 2020

pants staying inside their vehicles, RI registered vehicles only, wearing old western style cloth face coverings and disbanding at the end of the Cruisin’ Cavalcade and then safely heading home. Classic car ant truck shows are being cancelled every week due to social distancing and hurting their charity causes as well as lowering automotive enthusiast’s spirits. We start hosting more OUTLAW RUN Cruisin’ For Charity Cavalcade of Classic Cars & Trucks in other communities soon to help those charities and families in need as well. Anyone with a classic car or truck wanting to participate can email me at jwpisces14@aol.com with a photo of their ride and who will be participating. It’s for a good cause and should be a lot of fun for everyone involved. Stay safe and stay healthy!

2020 North American International Auto Show Cancels Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

The North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) announced it will cancel its June 2020 show in Detroit in light of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic sweeping across the world and the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s expected plans to repurpose TCF Center into a

became clear to us that TCF Center would be an inevitable option to serve as a care facility to satisfy our community’s urgent health needs,” he said. “One of the hallmarks of NAIAS since the very beginning has been our commitment to being socially responsible,” Alberts said. “Our thoughts continue to be with those whose lives have been impacted by this devastating virus. And, we support the city and state’s mission to help preserve life in the face of this challenging situation.” NAIAS will hold its next annual show in June 2021. 2020 NAIAS Chairman Doug North said show officials are also discussing plans for a fundraising activity later this year to benefit the children’s charities that were designated as beneficiaries of the 2020 Charity Preview event.

We look forward to literally redefining the auto show landscape with fresh ideas and innovative opportunities for mobility activations and partnerships,” North said. The KANDY Man By ED YESSAIAN

Rick Bicknell’s Immaculate Monte

You’ve heard it a million times- It’s a small world” and it really is!! You never know who you will cross paths with or when you will see them again. You

never know how many mutual friends you have, but in the Muscle Car World, it doesn’t really matter as long as we all hang out and share our passion. That was the case with Rick Bicknell and this smoking hot 1987 Monte Carlo SS. I had seen the car at the Super Chevy Show and watched it deservedly take top honors. I had also photographed the car at the Veteran’s Benefit show, but had still never met the owner. Surprisingly, I even work with his brother but had never met Rick himself. Then the world-famous Muscle Car Icon Nick Cincotti and his sidekick Brian MacKenzie created the Beantown Burners Muscle Car Club, and even though it was mostly GM cars (hahaha), I started hanging out with this group of really great guys and girls. During the first couple of Club meetings I was finally able to not only put a face to a name but also a car to a face. That’s also where I was able to gather a few details about the Kandy Monte Carlo. Rick has owned the car for over 30 years and had originally traded a jacked-up Ford truck for it. It started out black but after an incident with contractor and a snow pile went horribly wrong it ended up at Nikole Auto Body for some repair work. It was there that Rick saw the color on a 1993 soft-tail 22| Motorhead Magazine - May 2020

and it was LOVE at first sight. It’s hard to describe the depth and effect of the House of Kolor Brandywine Kandy over a silver base but in person this paintjob will blow you away. Backing up the “show” part of the equation, the car also has a pretty solid set up to “Go” as well. Continued Next Page

A GM Performance Parts short-block is the heart and soul of the Monte, topped with all the best Edelbrock goodies, including the intake, 1406 Carburetor, and accessories. The stock 200-4R transmission was cleaned and freshened up and a limited slip differential with 3.73 gears helps the Kandy Carlo pull hard once the light goes green and the Flowmasters start

to growl. All four corners glisten, thanks to my favorite wheel of all time- The Cragar SST. I first fell in love with these wheels in high school on a 72 Pontiac LeMans and they look spectacular on Rick’s Monte Carlo as well. A staggered pattern gives the car a very nice stance with 275’s on 15x8’s in the rear and 245’s on a 15x7 in the front. The stock interior was cleaned up nicely and accented with a Grant wheel, handmade aluminum trim, and a custom dash. A period correct stereo upgrade pumps the tunes and keeps Rick entertained as well. As of now Rick has no major plans for the car except for some clean up and routine maintenance but as we all know, that can change in a “heartbeat”. With all that’s happening in the world, I don’t know when I’ll see the Kandy Monte Carlo out and about again!! It might just be a random sighting at stoplight, so make sure you’re ready buddy!! K.A. Richard Rossi

By JOHN CONTI, SR. I met this guy in 1965. The Beatles, ‘Stones, Dave Clark 5-the English Invasion was going on strong in the US and I’m listening to Dion & The Belmonts, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, and feeling outnumbered in musical requests amongst my friends, until I met Richard Rossi and the Rossi family, all of which were ongoing car enthusiasts. After a few hot rod based conversations at Hugh B. Bain Junior High School, Rich tells me he has a ’30 Model A Tudor Sedan while my ongoing T-bucket build is discussed. A few days later he tells me it’s got the stock 4 cylinder with the 3 speed A transmission and driveline, but has a strong desire to change the picture with a small block Chevy in front of a 400 Turbo transmission and an independent Corvette rear suspension. He also adds that he wants to cut the roof, but meets some family opposition since the car is already in paint. It’s a very tightly grouped family with high respect for one another, but once his older brother, Nick, convinces Mr. Nick Rossi, Sr. this dream of a chopped V8 hot rod goes into gear like gangbusters. The mechanical ability of Richard Rossi and innovative capacity in the automotive/hot rod world is beyond description.

ride starts. Major frame modifications were made to incorporate all the new components with all home-made “one off ” brackets, crossmembers, linkages, etc. The Kugel independent stainless steel front end with adjustable coil-overs gives a smooth ride with good handling characteristics as Richard anticipated before purchasing it with the history of that company. However, due to his particular capacity to correct, improve, modify any low grade and/or inadequate (in his eyes) areas, each part, including the spindle male and female tapers on this front end, were

His self-acquired knowledge and capacity to turn junk yard parts into functioning works of art is very rare, then and even today. The perseverance to achieve his initial goal with very few changes incorporated during the process is not common. All this is usually done with a sense

of humor, if you can believe that. The first modification was to remove 3 ½” from the roof, which he did, then left it all tacked in place while digesting “the look” over a week’s time. One week passes and the chop isn’t enough. So we go another 2” after cung the gas torch welded tacks and removing more material. Everything is repositioned again, roof to body, and he’s happy. The 4 cylinder engine is still in the car with the original drivetrain, but driving the car with the 5 ½” chop is pung a grin on the owner’s face 24/7. Shortly thereafter, the chassis work and engine/transmission swap joy 30| Motorhead Magazine - May 2020

modified to his liking-every part of the car is that way. The primer (B&C Red Rust Stop 200) is a bygone ‘50’s auto body shop primer that he wanted for the look, and is still on the car today where he now resides in Florida for the past 26 years.

I can assure you he has performed show winning first place award winning paint jobs, with flawless old school Ditzler 500 black paint-he just wanted the primer look. This represented what really went on with a lot of hot rods in the 40’s and 50’s since a lot of hot rods were never completed in the paint department due to financial limitations of the builders (except the firewalls were always ivory since that was done before the engine was dropped in, in most cases). Once the vehicle was initially assembled after the driveline/suspension conversion, very few tweaks and/or adjustments were made, which explains Richard Rossi’s personality. He’s put many thousands of miles on this car in the

50+ years he’s owned it. 14,000 miles with the original 100,000 mile at point of purchase, 4 banger. 86,000 more since then with the small block Chevy-and he still drives it along the Daytona/Port Orange roads.

These photos are real. Same car, same owner, same builder, same driver, and the same friendly, fun loving guy he and his family represent-talk about a long term enthusiast. I think he gets the award.

SPEEDWAY UPDATE

RONNIE WILLIAMS SET TO DEFEND TRI TRACK TITLE

By KYLE SOUZA THOMPSON SPEEDWAY MOTORSPORTS PARK

SEEKONK, Mass. -- When the Tri Track Open Modified Series season takes the green flag, Ronnie Williams will look to keep his hot streak going. Williams seems like a driver who is more than fit to chase a second consecutive championship. The Ellington, Connecticut, native won the 2019 Tri Track title with car owner Gary Casella in their first year together as a team. Williams took the victory in the Open Wheel Wednesday $10,000 to win race at Seekonk Speedway, and sealed the title right back at Seekonk in the Haunted Hundred in October. But that wasn’t his only success last year. Williams also earned his second straight SK Modified championship at Connecticut’s Stafford Motor Speedway, becoming just the sixth driver in history to accomplish that feat. He drives for Adam Skowyra over at Stafford, another combination that has also been a successful one. “It’s completely different with Gary and Adam,” Williams said. “They both bring great cars to the track – but Adam has like 15 guys that show up to the track and Gary has like four – but they both provide me great race cars that every single time I go to the track, I know I can win. I hadn’t been to at least a few of the tracks on the Tri Track last year – but we were able to have instant success. I’m really looking forward to going back there with Gary.” Williams finished third in the opener last year at Claremont and followed it up by winning Seekonk. In the heat of the summer, he finished second at Star Speedway and second at Oxford Plains, which helped him open a gap in the standings. It was enough to hoist the crown with No. 25 team after Monadnock Speedway and Seekonk’s finale. Just prior to Seekonk’s Open Wheel Wednesday win, Williams had come off a victory at New Hampshire Motor Speedway driving for Casella just a few days earlier. After that, he won Seekonk, then picked up a win at Stafford in their biggest SK Modified race of the year – all in the same week. “I look back at that week and it was just an unbelievable week,” Williams said. “I would have never thought we would go to Loudon, blow-up, and have the guys head back, and we win our heat and the race. We weren’t even planning to go to Seekonk when the motor blew – we had decided we were going to Loudon – but when we won – we decided to get ready and go to Seekonk, and we win that. Then on Friday, at Stafford, I was involved in a wreck and came back to beat Keith Rocco at the line... it was just a crazy week, and one I will definitely look back and just keep saying “wow” about.” 34| Motorhead Magazine - May 2020

Two of those wins came with Casella, who he plans to team with again in 2020. Casella is no stranger to modified racing in New England – winning various races, and championships, across the region in his time as a car owner.

Tri Track races are a bit different than anything else Williams runs, because they are consistently 100 laps and do require drivers to save tires behind the wheel. He will be back at Stafford and will run select NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour races in 2020. He brings star-power to what the Tri Track Open Modified Series offers. New for 2020, teams will compete in at least five races to be eligible for championship, with one drop race factoring into the standings. The champion will be decided by taking the best five out of six point totals a driver receives. This will allow drivers to afford a small miscue and still be in contention for the title. EDITOR’S NOTE: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic teams should visit the team info tab of tritrackmodifieds.com for the most up to date information. In the most recent press releases, the following info was delivered: “The Tri Track Open Modified Series event at Monadnock Speedway, scheduled for May 9, has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The health and safety of our race teams, drivers, staff and fans continues to be paramount during this unprecedented situation. The series will continue to abide by guidelines given by local government and public health officials. At this time, Tri Track officials are working together with Monadnock Speedway to come up with a reschedule date that will fit both parties.” “Tri Track Open Modified Series officials announced, in collaboration with Claremont Speedway, that the event originally scheduled for May 24 will not happen as scheduled. New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu released new guidance for the state on Friday that will not allow gatherings to occur for the race event. The Tri Track Open Modified Series continues to keep the safety of our race teams, drivers, staff and fans in mind with decisions. We will provide additional guidance around the 2020 schedule once it is available. Our intention is to hit the track for action this season.” In the meantime, follow Tri Track on social with Facebook, Instagram and a new Twitter handle, @TriTrackNE.

Peckham’s Pride By ROB MAY Continuing a Blue Mercury theme, this issue we look at Al and Jean Peckham’s Silver Blue with Silver Blue top 1975 Cougar XR-7 which makes its den in Corning, a small town of 1500 people in S.W. Iowa. They celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary this April. 2020 is the 45th anniversary of the 1975 Cougar! This Mercury is a great example of the fourth generation (74-76) Cats. After an underpowered first car, being a gear head, Al wanted a muscle car of that time. A local car dealer took a 1976 Cougar XR-7 in on a trade. “I immediately fell in love with the lines of the car. It needed a paint job, and the vinyl top needed replaced but it had great potential. The car became mine after I graduated in 1982, and I rolled up my sleeves and went to work. Metallic blue paint job, white vinyl top, air shocks, big fatties on the back with Cragar rims and dual exhausts made it looked really sharp. Good tweak on the 351W 2V and it ran really well. That is the car I had when Jean and I started dating.” The Peckham family decided to look for another Cat based upon the first one. “We thought finding an old Cougar, turning it into a hot rod and reliving our younger years would be a lot of fun. He and mom enjoy going to car shows so we thought it would be fun to join them with our own car. We wanted one with a blue interior, so we could replicate what I had done to my ‘76.” In Nov 2019, they located this 1975 Cougar southwest of Austin TX. “The car is a sister Cat to my 76! Looked amazing shape in the pictures, so we jumped in the truck and made the long drive. As 36| Motorhead Magazine - May 2020

an original survivor Mercury, it didn’t take us long to realize that it would be a crime to do anything to it. The car has 99,000 miles on it. We were told it was repainted in 1995 after it was keyed, and the original paint couldn’t be matched. Not sure who did the paint work, but they did a very good job. The interior shows no wear, the car was undercoated which was normal for that time period. As such, it has zero rust and the undercarriage is

as clean as the top. This Cougar is just an amazing example of a 45-year-old car that was taken very good care of. So, there will be no custom paint job or other modifications. CRSNCAT will live on unmolested!” When the ’75 Mercury was home, Al went over it in great detail. “There really wasn’t anything that needed immediate attention. I was curious about

The 2015 North East Auto Show

interesting with this car is it has power windows but doesn’t have cruise control. Of all the cars I’ve looked at I haven’t seen this combination.” This Cat has a 351W 2V under the hood paired with a C4 transmission. “The car starts, runs and drives great, and since we have no desire to do any modifications, we will just enjoy it as is. We have gotten into the habit of jumping in the car and going for evening drives around our local lake. It quickly brought back memories of driving these heavy old cars. Actually, I think it rides better than some cars that are made today. That feeling of floating down the road over bumps is real.” The lines of these Mercury cars are very unique, luxurious but sporty. “It is amazing the looks we get going down the road and the comments from people that stop and look. We are so lucky to be the owners of an amazing survivor in amazing shape.” Al and Jean have joined their local Southwest Cruisers of Iowa car club in addition to International Mercury Owners Association IMOA.

the health of the engine, so I did a tune up and a compression test. I was really pleased when there was only a 4% difference between all the cylinders! The exhaust was showing some age, so the team at Corning Tire and Exhaust did a great job of putting on a custom dual exhaust that looks and sounds great. No other work is planned or needed at this time. One thing that I found

Lauryn “Hotwheels” Pontiac-Vernancio

The weekend of the North East Auto Show was intriguing with new models introduced from all makes to say the least. What really hit home with us was the all new 2015 Camaro Z28 on the showroom floor. Not only did it bring back memories from when it was first introduced in 1967 when the Chevrolet Camaro first

was produced, but it also brought with it a whole new version of retro-fitted power. This new version of the original bad boy holds a whopping 7.0 V8 engine (firing off at 505 horsepower and 481 foot pounds of torque) that is pulled forward by a six speed TREMEC TR6060 transmission and a rear wheel drive high performance TORSEN helical limited-slip differential. Braking power is far from obsolete with Brembo carbon-ceramic performance

four wheel anti-lock disc brakes and there are Multimatic DSSV dampers. A dual-mode performance exhaust gives the car a nice rumble but will surely not cause any headaches. The car is lubricated by a dry sump oiling system and has a standard track-designed cooling system that is liquid to liquid between the oil lubrication, the transmission, and differential. The chassis is rolled off by nineteen inch forged aluminum wheels with high performance Pirelli PZeroTrofeo R “summer only” tires.

Etch doesn’t want to see the decline of the automotive enthusiasts activities or watch our classic car and truck culture slowly pass away and be left on the side of the road like tossed trash. By the way, he hates when people litter our nation with their trash. He never sees classic car and truck enthusiasts ever doing that. It’s the dirty pigs that have no respect for anything or anybody. He often approaches these idiots telling them to go back and pick up what they just threw on the ground while in their vehicle. He isn’t very nice about it either and when he leaves the location you can be guaranteed that his right foot is firmly planted on the gas pedal

and leaving them in a cloud of burnt tire rubber. Etch reaches down and turns the ignition key in his GTO and looks around to see if the coast is clear of anyone or the police that might be searching for him and his Outlaw Pontiac. The jet black Pontiac takes to the countryside back roads trying to avoid detection from law enforcement. That’s not very easy to do when your Classic Muscle Car sticks out like a sore thumb on the streets and highways in New England. Sounds like an plane leaving the airport runway and that’s also hard for anyone to ignore. Etch is cruising the speed limit trying to figure out a way to get himself out of this mess

without losing his cherished ride to the scrapyard car crusher and spending the next five hundred years behind bars. Slowly crossing over a country bridge he takes a glance at the highway under him and sees a half a dozen police cruisers driving at a high rate of speed with their lights flashing and sirens blaring. Etch puts the gas pedal to the floor and launches towards the heavily wooded area on the backroads hoping to stay ahead of the police vehicles traveling on the highway under him.

Article dedicated to Jan, Bart Pritchard’s mom By ROB MAY Continuing a Blue Mercury theme, this issue we look at Bart’s Pastel Blue with White top 1974 Cougar XR-7 which makes its den in Doniphan of Southeast Missouri. He moved there to be near his son and 4 grandkids. “I bought a 15-acre farm outside of town with a small stocked pond because I love to fish and raise rabbits.” In Spring of 1990, Bart’s mom wanted a new car as she hated the previous V6 car. “We headed to Earnhardt Ford in Tempe, Arizona to look for another car. This beautiful ‘74 Cat caught my eye. When I opened the car door and looked inside, I said ‘mom you have to drive this.’ What a beautiful ride, so smooth, and yet all kinds of power. She loved the car too, so she bought it.” At that time, it had a little over 84,000 miles on the odometer. “My mom had me go through the Cougar. The first thing done was to rebuild the front end, replacing the ball joints and control arm bushings. She was very meticulous about keeping up on everything with the car by checking the fluids every week, changing the oil every 5,000 miles, and tuning the car up every year before going through emissions for yearly tags. My mom would have me change belts and hoses every few years as preventive maintenance. She’d have the tires rotated and an alignment done every six months. A new vinyl top was put on, the front seats reupholstered, and new carpet installed about 10 years after buying the car. We would wash the car and vacuum it every couple weeks. Factory options and standard features include cruise control, tilt wheel, air conditioning with auto temperature control, electric rear window Family Cat in MO

defroster, interval windshield wipers, power windows and door locks, and remote left mirror. One thing that caught Bart’s eye when he first looked at the car was the tachometer. Originally, the Cat came with a 400 2V, C6 automatic transmission, and a 2.75 rear end ratio. “In 1996, my mom wanted me to rebuild the motor. The engine still had power, wasn’t using oil, but wanted it done before she retired while she was still working and had the money. I asked her if she wanted a little more horsepower and she said yes. So, I located a 400 that came out of a 1971 Mercury Monterey to rebuild. I rebuilt that 400 to 1971 specs and added an Eldelbrock 4 barrel aluminum intake manifold and new carburetor. When my mom got home from work after driving the car for the Continued Next Page

1st time with the new engine she asked, ‘what’s that noise when I step on the gas?’ You mean that loud sucking noise?” I laughed. She said yes. ‘That’s the 4 barrel kicking in’. ‘Okay. Boy that car is fast.’ I still laugh about that because my mom was 65 at the time. While in Arizona, the Cougar was a daily driver. Now in Missouri, Bart only drives her in nice weather. “I don’t drive the car during the winter or when it rains, which I miss because the car is such a pleasure to drive. With her huge 8-way power bucket seats, the car is so comfortable to drive. It’s like sitting on your couch and so much leg room. I’m 6’3” and can totally stretch out my legs. Turn on the stereo and enjoy the ride.” People love her sleek lines and light blue color. That’s what attracted Bart to the car on the car lot. “My mom was always telling me about guys waving to her, giving a thumbs up, telling her how much they liked it or wanting to buy it. People will stop and stare when I drive through a parking lot at a store.” The Cougar has now been in Bart’s family for 30 years. “She was my mom’s pride and joy. Whenever someone told her they liked her car, she always told them my son keeps her up. Every time I drive the car, I feel that mom is with me. Now my 12-year-old granddaughter, Leaira, wants the car when I’m gone. She would be the 4th generation to own her. She has already driven the car when she was 10 years old. She asked to drive it, so we practiced on the gravel county road by my farm. When she went back to school that fall, she got to tell everyone that she drove grandpa’s car. After they didn’t believe her, she told them grandpa took a video and posted it on Facebook. Leaira was so proud.”
