Horsepower Farm’s
A Hemi Powered Show Stopper ED YESSAIAN For well over a decade, I’ve been a huge fan of the cars and trucks being “bred” at Horsepower Farm in Epsom, NH (www.HorsepowerFarmllc. com). My friendship with Rick Serino goes all the way back to the Fun Ford Weekend events at New England Dragway, where his Car Show entries were just lightyears ahead of anything else in their class. While judging these shows it would take me hours to stand and marvel at his attention to detail, custom fabrication, and brilliant ingenuity. And just when you thought he couldn’t top his latest project, along comes another rolling masterpiece to raise the bar all over again. So, when Motorhead owner Lou Cicerone called me and asked me to find a feature car that’s outside 14| Motorhead Magazine - March 2022
my comfort zone of Mustangs and Jeep Wranglers, I knew just the guy to call for something cool and as always, Horsepower Farm delivered. According to Rick the Model A that you see pictured here was very well thought out, as he knew it would be with him for the long haul. It was a project of passion that took quite some time to complete and is still being finetuned to this day. Rick wanted a rolling business card to showcase the many amazing

s 1930 Ford Model A have good road manners, so Rick and the crew drew up a custom air ride system capped off with QA1 shocks and components from the SRT8 independent rear suspension. All four corners hide Brembo brakes, which are tucked behind custom VIP wheels, that recently got treated to a little color coat to help accent the car’s personality. And trust me, this car has personality, long before you see the car coming down the road it proudly announces its arrival through a complete custom exhaust bent up by Horsepower Farm. While Rick says the majority of the work on the car is complete, as many of you Motor-
design, custom suspensions, and exhaust, just to name a few. To get things started he joined forces with Gregg’s Customs for the chassis work and the final product is simply mind-blowing. The level of quality is what we expect from Horsepower Farm but the engineered structural work, including the suspension geometry takes some serious talent and they took this car to the next level. To power the Model A Rick wanted to go with a combination that would be a little different than what you commonly see in cars like this. A donor Chrysler 300 SRT8 sat in the parking lot and got Rick’s creative gears turning. The 6.1-liter Gen3 Hemi was plucked from the bay as was the Nag1 5-speed automatic overdrive transmission, which would allow the Model A to be a cruiser. But to be a cruiser the car also had to be comfortable and
heads know nothing is ever truly finished. We look forward to seeing what else the crew at Horsepower Farm has in store for the Model A, as well as a couple of the other shop projects. The Whitcomb Classic, named in the honor of Bob Whitcomb, father of Gregg, will also honor Bob and his NASCAR experience and success. This Sunday’s Daytona 500 marks 32 years since Whitcomb’s NASCAR Cup Series team, with driver Derrike Cope, won NASCAR’s Great American Race. “SOARING GAS PRICES” JIM WEICHERDING
(Ugh!) I’ve been writing feature articles for Motorhead Magazine for ten years. I’ve never started any of those articles with the word; (Ugh!). I did just now. Why? Because we are about to face gas prices like we have never witnessed before in this region and across the USA. We will bear witness to one hardship after another hardship after most of us already survived Covid-19 and Omnicron viruses over the previous two years. Gas and oil prices are expected to increase significantly over the coming weeks and months. Just in time for warmer temperatures and milder weather when we can actually leave our homes and go outside for a change. Travel somewhere in our cars and trucks. Take a classic vehicle cruise. Grocery costs are also on the rise. Utility companies are increasing their usage rates as well. Why? Because of oil and gas prices going up, and up, and up! I was driving into Connecticut about a week before I wrote this article. I happened to glance up at gas prices located at a gas station just over the Rhode Island and Connecticut border. I was on my way to do my live oldies radio show broadcast at an area auto dealership. The live radio show broadcasts last about three hours, give or take how long I’m on site. When I drove past that gas station at 9am that Saturday morning the cost for regular gas was posted at $3.51 per gallon. Fours later, driving past that same gas station on my way back to my shop the posted cost per gallon of regular fuel was now $3.61. Gas prices jumped up ten cents in just a few hours? Don’t even ask about heating oil prices. A month ago I paid $2.89 per gallon for a hundred gallons of oil delivered to my house and shop.
prices are the prices. Nothing we can do about it. They intend on attending as many area car shows and cruise nights as possible this year to make up for lost time over the past couple of years when these automotive events were too restricted and outright cancelled. I’m with them! Gas prices be damned! We are all going cruisin anyway. It’s March everyone and that means spring is here and the start of the car show and cruise night season is right around the next bend in the road. Don’t forget to turn your clocks ahead on Saturday night, March 12th, or on Sunday morning, March 13th, for Daylight Saving Time. I’m sure we could all use an extra hour of daylight after the long cold winter months we have behind us in our rear view mirrors. I know I would welcome another hour of daylight starting this month. Hope to see all of you at an area car show and cruise night soon. I’ll have plenty of Motorhead Magazines in my truck to pass out to everyone every month this cruisin season. High gas prices won’t stop that from happening! And I drive a 496ci big block Chevy truck.

I’m hoping these extravagant prices won’t directly impact the car show scene this summer. Many enthusiasts I have spoken to said they don’t care what it costs for gasoline. The

BUILT NOT BOUGHT By MARK LABRANCHE This is the second in a series of articles that will be looking at “Cars That Are Built Not Bought”. Simply said, people who built their cars themselves with friends and family. Nothing wrong with buying an already built car turnkey. I have much respect for any Motorhead! If you out there having fun, riding in a car - that is just cool to me. For myself, I can’t stop looking with amazement with this caliber of cars that are built in people’s garages or lean-to. In the up-and-coming articles you will see jaw dropping cars built by owners, with their own hands, sweat and tears. Some will have close friends or family helping them, guiding them or maybe even painting it for them. The bottom line is they took the time to build their car, their time, and long hours to get it done. This article is about a car built by Todd Rockford. Todd has always had his hand in car builds. Todd has had the Mustang fever and building a killer set up with a turbo with all the goods. He is always helping his friends make their cars faster. Todd has done the street scenes in the middle of the night just like all the true street guys. This time it was different. Todd, like a lot of the street racers, have kind of found their way to the track for the most part. Do they still street race? I will not lie, yes, they do, but not as much because this type of racing has grown very fast. There has been a lot of groups in the New England Area that have formed to have more and more races at most of the local tracks. He will always tell you family is first. No matter what, that will always happen.

Todd is a very quiet man. He does not say a lot and it was not easy for me to get him to talk about himself or his unbelievable car he calls TIN CAN. He has that look like he is always thinking and well, he is. He is never really happy with any of his cars, he always upgrades them all the time. I ask myself where this guy gets the time to build a car from nothing to something that are jaw

frames, roll cages and suspension parts by hand in his own shop. He does not have all the modern up-to-date tools that the big money shops do. That does not mean he does lesser of a job by any means. If anything, it will be better. Todd got a call from one of his buddies from the car group called “508”. The 508 have been pressing hard to get a race with “JJ the Boss” in Memphis. Yes, Discovery Channel’s JJ the Boss. To their surprise, Discovery agreed to have the 508 come on down to race JJ the Boss. They only had 60 days to prepare and then they would be taped for the TV series.
tion, and it was all there. Todd picked this car for several reasons, one being that it was small, and it did not weigh a lot. He brought the car home and just rips the car apart down to a shell. I mean no wiring, no interior, took all the glass out of the car and set it aside. He bagged and tagged all the parts he needed to put grandma’s grocery getter back together, to make it look stock. You know a sleeper look. He put the car on a homemade jig table and bolted it down and found the center line of the car. Then he just went nuts on this poor car, cutting, I mean he basically cut from the floor and all the suspension out. There was just the shell. He then built a roll cage and a complete
The only cars Todd has ever known were Mustangs. His first car was an ‘86 Mustang with a 5.0. Owning about 10 Mustangs throughout my racing career I knew it was time for a change. He did not have a car at the time as he had sold the Mustang and wanted something different. tube front end. The drive train is a stock block 6.0l with Wesco pistons and Eagle rods, after market AFR aluminum 245cc heads, Holley sniper race intake and Holley sniper throttle body. Todd then made a custom-made one-off turbo kit with 85 mm forced induction turbo and precision 45 mm waste gates. The transmission is a TH400 3 speed and was built by our own local transmission shop called Accurate Transmissions. The rear end is a mustang 8.8 rear end customized and narrowed six inches to fit. Fuel management is a Holley dominator EFI system and was completely tuned by Todd. He self-learned everything being done from books and YouTube videos. The cooling of this little monster is completely custom made. Remember the stock Chevette had a four cylinder in it.
Todd had seen a Chevy Chevette in a picture in his cell phone that he took about 2 years ago at a car show. So, he zoomed in on the picture and called the guy. He was shocked that the guy still had the car. Todd drove down and bought the car on the spot. The car only had 35k on it. Yes, like grandma used to use to get groceries. Yes, that car, your grandmother’s car. It was in good condi-
Todd stuffing in an LS 6.0 where there was not a lot of room in the engine bay. With the lack of room, he comes up with a plan. He used two used Yamaha 100cc street bike radiators he found on eBay and customized them to fit on each side of the motor. If that does not impress you enough how about running the car on slick tires only 28-10.5. I want you to think about this for a while. Most big power car builders stuff huge tires inside the frame rails. A lot of guys will run drag radials tires. Sure, they are faster, but the track must be prepped and prepped good. That mean a lot of money for glue, dragging the track, and making it a perfect condition. It is not an easy job to make a track prepped for radial tires, it takes years of learning and getting it right in all types of conditions. Well, Todd is a hard-core kind of guy, he tuned the car to the track. I am by no means taking anything away from radial tire guys, but it is a lot harder to tune your car and make it down
a track that is not glued and prepped. There are a lot of people who do this, but it is not easy. Trust me, it is very hard to be able to read track conditions and make the correct changes to win. Todd will be one of the heavy hitters in the New England Grudge group. This was a mad thrash to get this car all together within 60 days to get it down to race JJ the Boss in Memphis, Tennessee. Once completed, Todd brought the car to a local industrial park to make a maiden voyage. With no tunes in the Holley dominator computer, Todd had to drive around and get base tuned. Once base tune was good, Todd made a couple full throttle passes on his custom setup. On the second pass, the alternator pulley had broken off the alt and went through the hood. With no time left to tune the car it was time to load it up and head to Memphis untested. Todd and the 508 group made the 26-hour trip. They got the car out of the trailer and repaired the car. Todd made a few good test passes before the show and car was looking great. He ended up racing Molly on the TV show and won the race. This race would be the most important race of Todd’s career and he was super excited for the win. He got car back to MA and decided to run a local NT race at New England Dragway. The car had never been to a track before. The very first pass the car made a huge wheelie and broke a bunch of front-end parts. The rear shock had broken, and the car shot straight up for the moon. Because the car was built for poor traction, street racing and Grudge racing and was set up at a 50/50% weight front to back for street racing, it was clear this car was going to struggle at tracks with a prepped surface. So, Todd had a lesson learned and added weight to the front and changed the power management system strategy. His very next race was LS Fest East in Bowling Green, Kentucky. The race was a blast, and the family had a very fun time. Unfortunately, the rods in the motor had stretched and it was not going to make it down the track. The car ended up bending rods in qualifiers and couldn’t race the main event. Currently the “Tin Can” is again under the knife and being totally torn apart. Why would Todd do this? Well, simply said, you always want to go faster. This time the car will have an even better faster setup and will pass NHRA tech for a faster class. Dave Moretti is one of those individuals who has been in the drag race and hot rod scene the majority of his life, along with many radical Harley Davidsons, one of which he still owns; not to mention a self-employed well known, quality conscience body shop owner for over 50 years. I got to know Dave in the ‘60s in high school and we have been very close friends ever since. ness was started in 1970. Three years ago, he got the itch for a cruiser sedan for Sunday rides with his wife, Nora. One of Dave’s many close friends, Bobby Manni, connected him with a possible “barn find” ‘38 Olds, through word of mouth. An arrangement was made to head out to Coventry to check out this car with tools, gas, and a battery in hand, which concluded with a deal being struck with the daughter of the decreased previous owner. With the conversation going down describing the vehicle as having been started periodically 2+ years ago, Dave and the seller’s husband got the car running with fresh gas, aired up tires, and a new battery in short timehowever, the mice and their belongings were in store for a quick ride back to Dave’s shop. With windows wide open and Dave’s head out the driver’s window, like a Greyhound’s, a dealer plate attached and Bobby following, they made it to Dave’s shop. Three years later, Dave and Nora cruise this ‘38 Olds on Sundays, complete with a small block Chevy connected to the 700R4 overdrive tranny, twisting the blazer differential. The dashboard included many hours of Moretti’s sweat with artful innovative end results, as the pictures indicate. Every day, Rhode Island State Troopers, police officers, firefighters and first responders put their lives at risk doing their jobs out on our roadways and highways trying to keep us safer. State troopers and police officers put themselves in harm’s way every time they exit their vehicle, whether it is while working roadwork details protecting others at those job sites, people approaching those job sites and during traffic stops. They are vulnerable to injury and even death resulting from drivers not paying attention to their surroundings and driving recklessly. I’m on the road a lot and believe me when I tell you, it’s tough out there for state troopers and police officers just doing their jobs. The same thing goes for firefighters, first responders, utility workers, state workers, tow truck operators, road maintenance workers and transportation vehicle employees. Drivers need to slow down and move over whenever they see flashing red, blue or amber lights on the road ahead of them to help keep anyone on the roadways, as well themselves, safe. Most of the time, not always, these lights will be seen flashing on the right hand side of the roadway. Slow down, then move over and avoid a collision. It’s a 42| Motorhead Magazine - March 2022

Visitors to RI need to know that we have a “move over” law and obey that law. I have been working alongside law enforcement for more than two decades creating award-winning traffic safety campaigns such as the Buckleupallofus Buckle Up Hotline bringing corporate America partners to the table with the Rhode Island State Police and featuring my child passenger safety mascot image, message and hotline phone number appearing as bumper stickers displayed on every Rhode Island State Police vehicle. Other RI city police departments have done the same thing. Providence Police Officers were on the news stations shown passing out similar coloring posters, vehicle air fresheners, stickers and magnets to kids in that city in stopped vehicles at red lights, in business establishments and grade schools reminding kids to buckle up for safety. I went to every school in Providence with police officers and talked with students about traffic safety for years. Many other cities, towns and communities invited me to come visit their grade school students, libraries and daycares to talk about child safety with police officers and firefighters. I still attend these kids safety visits today. I also provided Hasbro Children’s Hospital ER, waiting area, activity room and patient’s rooms with hundreds of child safety coloring calendars and products every month with my Seasons of Safety coloring campaign for ten consecutive years for free until ending due to the Covid epidemic. I now have Bucky Car Seat Check Up events scheduled with Hasbro Children’s Hospital and RI Hospital this year starting in May at the Warwick Mall. I also co-founded Rhode Island Safe Kids Coalition, Providence Safe Communities, initiated the Injury-Prevention Division at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and other popular safety campaigns. All of them receiving awards from federal, state and local government
agencies. My Buckleupallofus / Click-it-or-Ticket Campaign started in the town of Burrillville, RI as an exit billboard at the high school and expanded nationwide sponsored by MetLife Insurance and Midas Mufflers. My The SAFE And The SERIOUS and Buckleupallofus Child Passenger Safety Campaigns followed shortly after that and are utilized by police and fire departments across America today in hundreds of cities, towns and communities and keeps expanding with requests and usage permission from mayors, public safety directors, State Troopers and police departments wanting to use a campaign with a proven track record of success and AAA front page articles with police department data to prove it works. Look for the “Slow Down...Move Over” coloring poster kids page in this issue of Motorhead Magazine. TSATS and Buckleupallofus safety coloring posters will not only be available in Rhode Island this summer. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CAT By ELAINE LONG and ROB MAY Southwest Cats appeared on Motorhead’s radar in 2017 with the introduction of Rob May’s articles. His 1969 Cougar (which makes its den in Lompoc, California) prowled these pages previously courtesy of his wife’s photos (by Georgina Garcia May Photography). GGMP returns to highlight a new member of the May’s family collection. This month we reflect upon a small-town setting that had a huge impact on two families (Long and May). 1967 welcomed the first model year of the Mercury Cougar, and all these initial Cats were built in Dearborn, MI. After its July 1967 birth, this one was shipped to Bob Estes Mercury in Inglewood, CA. Estes has their own part in Cougar History as they are known for their Mercury Cougar Trans-Am racing entrants. Directly related to racing and prominently displayed on the driver’s side rear window is the combined Motor Trend Car of the year and Dan Gurney Special decal. Dan Gurney certainly has multiple ties to the Mercury Cougar. For 1967, the “Special” package added turbine wheel covers and a chromed engine dress-up kit: air cleaner lid, valve covers, oil dipstick, and radiator cap. Sadly, these parts are often removed over the years. It is nice seeing a DGS retain these features. Trafalgar Blue coats the exterior combining well with the Aqua Leather Bucket seats on this ’67 Mercury Cougar XR-7 Dan Gurney Special making this Cat fit perfectly into the Blue Mercury theme often seen in Motorhead. 44| Motorhead Magazine - March 2022

We have many fond memories of the car and the years we enjoyed driving it. The car has remained in our family from 9/18/67 until November 19, 2021 when we passed it onto the next owner. We hope he enjoys It as much as we did.” Before telling some of the continuing current day story, we need to back track to the ‘80s for more interlinking history. Elaine and Dave Long are well known in the Lompoc Community. They are both retired from Cabrillo High School. This ’67 Cougar is very familiar with the staff parking lot at Cabrillo. Rob May enters this picture as a Class of ’87 student. While at Cabrillo, he remembers seeing the Cat! With the Long family, the Mercury stayed in Lompoc. Rob returned to Lompoc in 1996 with his first Cougar – the previously Motorhead featured 1969 Cat. Deemed a “survivor” condition, this Mercury Cougar retains and reflects most of its original options. Formerly, a daily driver, this Mercury spent the last decade on very light duty. Rob was looking for a Cougar to drive more often than his now restored ’69. Now part of the May family, this ’67 will receive typical tune-up items and other updates to simultaneously prepare

The exhaust system in vehicles is a mechanism which helps remove harmful gasses and substances that form in the engine due to the combustion of the fuel. The exhaust system is also responsible for reducing the noise that comes from the engine. Therefore, it can be attributed to the exhaust systems which purify the gas and noise. The exhaust system contains a set of pipes that direct the exhaust from the engine to outside the vehicle. As a rule of thumb, vehicles consisted of one exhaust pipe but, now they can have double or dual exhaust pipes. He slows to a stop and looks down the long deserted road out of the windshield of his pristine Pontiac GTO. “Damn! I’m going to have to crawl down this road slow as hell or risk damaging my undercarriage, chrome parts and black tar paint job. Maybe even my windows if a stone flies up the wrong way.
